My guy and I visited here recently and I must say, it's been awhile since I've had such a poor experience at a restaurant. It's been a few years since I've been here (since they first opened), and I am in no hurry to return. What went wrong shouldn't be the question. What actually went right should be asked. Let's start at the beginning. We visited on a beautiful Saturday mid morning but were quickly seated after arriving. The server asked us if he could start us off with drinks. I shared I was there for the Yelp event, and he ignored that and repeated his question about drinks. He also stated he was busy, which I didn't know how to take. I felt rushed to make my drink decision, which ended up in me not enjoying the iced vanilla coffee I settled upon. For our order, we ordered the original beignets, the breakfast sandwich with potatoes and the 3 Little Piggy Omelette with cheese grits. After waiting for 20-30 minutes, our server returned to say that he just realized that our order was not in the queue. He said that that had never happened to him before, and said that maybe the weather was making the computers mess up. He said he would put in a rush for our food. I can say he seemed apologetic but I think it was an error on his part, not the computer. After all, he had already mentioned how "busy" he was. And I've never known a sunny, cloudless day to mess with computers. He typed our order in again and this time, the food was out within 15 minutes. The beignets were the best part of the meal. The breakfast sandwich (on sourdough) was hard and dry. The potatoes looked unappealing and lacked salt. My guy remarked his food was ok but commented on how "used" the butter looked. See included picture. The server checked on us periodically. We are not complainers so no we didn't mention any of this to the server. After requesting a box for the leftovers and the check, it was another 15-20 minutes before we saw either, even though he came around twice more and repeated what we had asked him for. We had our first ever experience at Ruby Sunshine and it was fantastic. Food portions were great and very delicious! We had the sweetest bartender, Lauren, and she took great care of us and was very helpful guiding us. She made great drinks, too! We noticed a sign that says they use 2 oz of liquor in their drinks and if you want something different you should ask. This makes a difference because so many chains and businesses try to save money and give you skimpy amounts of alcohol and that's where they go wrong. The more alcohol, duh, the more you want! This is where Ruby Sunshine does it absolutely right!! Also the manager, Craig, was very attentive as well! It makes a difference when the staff genuinely cares! I really like Ruby Sunshine. It's a sister restaurant of Ruby Slipper in Louisiana. The eggs Benedict are always tasty and very filling. I went with the migas with shrimp. Definitely one I'll get again. The service was fast and friendly and the restaurant is similar to the ones in New Orleans. There are cool things on the walls that make you feel like you're down in the quarter along with great music from Louisiana. So it was nice to listen to Dr. John on the speakers while eating a Louisiana style brunch. To top it off, they are offering a free entree, up to $20 value, to Federal employees furloughed due to the government shutdown. It really meant a lot to know a local restaurant in Birmingham is supporting the federal employees who will not receive another paycheck until the government opens back up again. I wanted a new place that I could go to while my tires were being replaced. I found this gem in my search and after seeing the menu, I had to try it! To learn a bit of the story that started the business (or at least the name), made me appreciate this spot even more. (See photo) We went on a Saturday late morning (about 10:30). The restaurant was quite full, with lots of people out on the patio. There isn't much parking available so it can be tricky to get a spot. There is some street parking available as well. I loved the vibe of the restaurant. There is a bar area for those wishing to sit there and enjoy brunch mimosas. I also love the tall booths that provide a more private dining area from the tables in front of you and behind you. Our server was Trey. He gave us some helpful information about the menu items and gladly shared his favorite dishes upon asking. He was prompt, polite and professional. He did get a large party outside so my coffee cup sat empty but he came in and apologized for that. Now the food.... My son got the Costa Rican Breakfast and really enjoyed it. He said it would be even better with a starch, perhaps potatoes. I had the Eggs Cochon and let me tell you.. it was a solid 10/10!!!! The flavor in the meat alone was outstanding. Two poached eggs. A biscuit for that comfort element, along with spinach for the healthy element. Then add the incredible creaminess and burst of flavor in the hollandaise sauce... perfection! I savored every bite and left NO CRUMBS! I will absolutely be back to this location. I was really pretty disappointed by my visit to Ruby Sunshine-Homewood. A friend was visiting from out of town and I have been to the Ruby sunshine on 280 multiple times and have always had a good experience, but this location definitely left a bad taste in my mouth. When we walked in, The girl at the hostess stand was texting away, and the second girl standing up there asked us how many. There were just two of us and we didn't mind sitting at the bar so we waited only a moment before we were sat, which was actually really fast for Sunday brunch! I will say that where we were sad was dirty, and we were not offered a place at the bar until we specifically asked for it, but instead told there was a 40 minute wait. They did clean up the area before we sat down, of course. We had blueberry lavender mimosas, and they were pretty good. My friend got the Costa Rican breakfast, and I got the bananas Foster French toast. As you can see in the picture, I only got a few tiny tiny pieces of banana and those were very overcooked. The French toast had not had the egg mixture mixed up properly, and as a result several spots on my French toast were just big gooey pieces of egg. I asked for bacon, which was two dollars extra. The pieces were pretty small and had been unceremoniously dumped in my syrup, so what I was hoping would be a salty reprieve from the sweetness of French toast, ended up in messy gooey bacon. Our waitress was really sweet, but she definitely looked like she was overwhelmed. I'm not sure if this was a Staffing issue or what. All in all, I'm more than a little embarrassed that out of all the great restaurants in Birmingham, I brought my out-of-town friend to this one and got a subpar experience. I met a friend to grab breakfast and catch up before she got on the road. Normally Ruby Sunshine is a great option, however, they fell very short today. Our server, Tina, was okay. She did have a gentleman that she was training, but it appeared she mainly had him assisting with carrying plates instead of allowing him to get hands on experience while being available to coach him if needed. This did not affect my review because I am unfamiliar with their training practices. It could have been his very first shift. We ordered the following: Water Boozy Coffee - This was good and not overly sweet. Lavendar Paloma - Very sweet. My friend sent back and ordered the blueberry lavendar mimosa which she much preferred. Beignets - My friend didn't seem to be to thrilled with them. I did not eat any. Fried green tomatoes - Over cooked. Should have sent back. Shrimp and grits - My friend was happy and stated she would order them again. Side of potatoes - Horrible. They appeared very dark, hard, dry. We sent them back. Tina commented "I don't know. They've looked like that all morning." My issue was you delivered food you knew wasn't on par with the establishment you work for nor would you have eaten them personally. Migas - Typically very good. Was far from enjoyable this go around. Lacked flavor, barely any eggs or chorizo. The meal was mainly a bed of tortilla strips. Not happy with our experience. Would have sent my entire order with an exception of my boozy coffee and water back if I knew my friend wouldn't have been uncomfortable from the moment I did so until we left. I was extremely happy to see her and catch up so I suppose me not messing up the vibe was a little worth it... would have rather went somewhere else and been happy with my service, food, experience. Alright, listen, run by and see the friendly staff at this location. Ask for Cookie she was very helpful and had a wonderful smile. This location has plenty of sitting inside and a patio. My friend had not been here, so Saturday was the day to change that. We arrived about noon and it was solidly busy. We checked in to find the wait to be about 30 minutes, but in actuality was 47 minutes. As a general rule, I don't like eating outside but we did on this occasion. We were seated near a large party of "friends" having a grand but loud time. Normally we would have multiple issues with this, but it was a glorious day and we just went with it! My friend ordered The Trifecta while I ordered the Biscuits and Gravy with a side of bacon. Our waitstaff was a wonderful and kind young man who did everything right! I failed to catch his name though. After our first bites, my friend and I stopped talking and commenced to eating. My scrambled eggs were the best scrambled eggs I have Ever had. They were silky, creamy and soft...perfectly scrambled. All I heard from my friend was OMG..."this is so good"! I have been here many times and I don't remember the eggs being this good, the chef of my eggs was on point! I have visited other Ruby Sunshine's and was excited I was close to another one. My friends and family loaded the car and headed out. We did have a big group so we made 2 reservations via Yelp to help with seating. When I first made my reservations we only had about 30-40 minutes wait. That's reasonable for brunch time on a Sunday; however we waited over a hour. I had to confirm my reservation twice! Once seated, I ordered the mimosa flight and sweet heat chicken and French toast bites. My food was delicious. The mimosas had a good variety of options and were tasty (for the most part). Oh let's not forget parking is absurd. The lot in front is very small, one way in/out so just take that into consideration when planning your trip! My waitress was very nice!
