Orient beach offers a gorgeous environment for passive recreation as well as a paradise for beach goers. There is a 2.1 mile bike path along the park road which stretches along the section of the park called long beach. This road is also the entrance and exit to the park which is situated at the end of this stretch of road. Being part of the bike path it provides for an incredible walk with views of Gardiner's bay on one side and marsh lands on the other. There are many species of Birds and other wildlife life within the park and an amazing and unusual red cedar forest which encompasses the picnic area. Hobbies here include swimming , paddle boarding, kayaking, fishing and a playground for the kiddies . Facilities here are very nice and clean, including a bath room and showers for when you get off the beach. Truly an incredible place to visit at least once in your life, its natural beauty is impressive.

Nearly all of the park is dirty and rock road, not very smooth. Signs are posted that a park decal is required but I decided that was a rule I could bend since I wasn't sticking around. Down the road and out to the end, I found a nice parking area (not smooth and ouchies on my car). Despite the chill and the howling wind, I was able to get quite close to the lighthouse and enjoy the view of Plum Gut. This is the very tip of the northern fork at the very end of Long Island. There are no amenities here. It's a beach park without toilets or shelters. Probably great for fishing. On a warmer and sunnier and less rainy day, this would be a fabulous park. This beach is the only one we found where you could simply drive up, park, and get in the water without spending a dime. The swimming area is marked off by safety ropes. There is at least one lifeguard on duty until 5. You're technically swimming in the Peconic River just before it empties into Gardiners Bay. The view is of Shelter Island, and it's quite charming.

The trails are well marked and it's a nice, scenic hike through the woods. Even better, on a hot day, the trails are under a canopy providing ample shade. Just note that the trails are narrow and there's quite a bit of poison oak along them so use caution. Also note, the entrance on 25A is hidden but noticeable by the red Audubon Society House. A nice park for a nature walk and recommended.

We like Kenney's beach & McCabe's on the sound but it seems that the beaches on the bay are much calmer and you can keep your umbrella up without the wind blowing it over. Very serene watching the sailboats and shelter island across the bay. The parking is really great and bathrooms are available too. P.S. Go to Billy's by the Bay (Wednesday-Sunday opened only) after to get some lobster as located on the same road :)

The rest of the park including the carousel is lovely. It's Memorial Day weekend and so they have planted a bunch of flags around. There are several memorials including a plaque mounted on a stone in tribute to the US Merchant Marine during WWII. It is a nice green space with the marina, the carousel, the camera obscura and in the winter time, an ice skating rink. The town's festivals and markets are held here as well. This weekend a last minute arrival by the Draken a Viking ship created based on existing artifacts and trial and error. It was a bit unorganized in the early morning and the Viking village, food vendors and Whiskey tent was nonexistent probably due to the poor weather. But the main event the Draken was there and for $12 you get a short tour of the boat. Very impressive re-creation of what a Viking boat probably looked like. A crew of 30 works this vessel and traveled all the way from Norway and invaded our tiny village of Greenport.

It is in very good condition with only a little bit of peeling paint around the edges. The marker reads, "According to local legend, Postmaster General Benjamin Franklin set milestones in 1755 that park the Post Road from here to Riverhead." And yes, Riverhead is 30 miles from here. The Pomeroy Foundation has more information. "The legend has its origins in a journal entry from a 19th century local historian named Augustus Griffin. A resident of Orient, NY in the 1850s, he recorded a local story that Benjamin Franklin visited North Fork in 1755 to take a ferry to New London for the purpose of visiting his mother. Supposedly, on the way he used a special odometer to measure the road to Southold where he stayed at the inn of Augustus Griffin's grandfather before travelling on towards New London. Interestingly, no mention of road markers or Benjamin Franklin's role as joint postmaster for the British Crown were mentioned. This became the basis of the idea that Benjamin Franklin himself not only measured the road but installed the mile markers." The website does a fact check that basically prove that there's no way Ben Franklin did it but does provide the actual origin of "the only complete set of mile stones in the northeast, making them historic in their own right." He said the museum displays will not be fully completed until next year. I am an artist so I appreciated all the artwork from the Oysterponds artist -William Steeple Davis. I also liked the personal relics from the descendants of the area - photographs, documents, jewelry, fishing relics from the 1800's. Beautiful grounds. We were there about an hour. There are no parking restrictions - park in the street. People don't realize what was here on Long Island before highways and big box stores. You need the past in order to have a future. Good for small school groups, small tour groups.

It's a cute town full of Great restaurants ranging from Japanese to basic americana food all that I have encountered have been outstanding. The stores are lovely ranging from cute clothings store an outstanding oil store and food markets etc. There is a sweet park in town Where you can chill out and see the boats etc. so beautiful I love it.
