Then park and walk well over a mile down the sand bar to the light. We had a ferry to catch, so didn't make the trek. From land, it's hard to see the light. It's not the quintessential tall tube - it's a 3 or 4 story granite square building. The view from the park itself is nice. Beautiful view of Sag Harbor and the sandbar extending out into the bay. You can also see Ram Island and the North Fork in the distance.

A very lonely…read morelight Cedar island Lighthouse is a very lonely light that is difficult to find and even see. It was built in 1860 and is about 40 feet high and once had a 6th order Fresnel lens. It has a Victorian style that is similar to other lighthouses of the period such as Execution Rock but has some subtle differences. It's made of huge blocks of granite that came from from Fall River Ma but I'm not sure who the architect was. The light gives an immediate impression of strength and massiveness and has survived a lot, including powerful hurricanes, nor easters and mindless vandels intent on burning it down. The light was once on a island about 200 meters from shore but the 1938 hurricane ripped this area apart and ended up filling in the breach with sand so you can actually walk right up to the lighthouse. You cannot go in and there are no gift shops or snack bars nearby. Nothing but the sea, wind and the empty lighthouse guarding memories. Perhaps the isolation is what makes in so popular for the idiots intent on vandalizing and destroying the great old lighthouse. Reaching the light is not easy, you have to park in Cedar Point Park and then walk for about a mile and a half along the very rocky shore to find the light. Not a good place to go during bad storms because on occasion the area can be flooded and you will get trapped and probably drown. Of course you can kayak out to the light but the area has some fierce rips and tides and the wind frequent tears through the area so that can be a dangerous option also. Cedar Island is a great and unique lighthouse in a fantastic, wild and pristine place. Not many people take the time and effort to find it but if you like lighthouses and rugged walks along the shore this is a delight. I have been hearing that the town of East Hampton is trying to raise money to restore and preserve the lighthouse. Considering all this lighthouse has been through it deserves a peaceful retirement.

The rest of the park including the carousel is lovely. It's Memorial Day weekend and so they have planted a bunch of flags around. There are several memorials including a plaque mounted on a stone in tribute to the US Merchant Marine during WWII. It is a nice green space with the marina, the carousel, the camera obscura and in the winter time, an ice skating rink. The town's festivals and markets are held here as well. This weekend a last minute arrival by the Draken a Viking ship created based on existing artifacts and trial and error. It was a bit unorganized in the early morning and the Viking village, food vendors and Whiskey tent was nonexistent probably due to the poor weather. But the main event the Draken was there and for $12 you get a short tour of the boat. Very impressive re-creation of what a Viking boat probably looked like. A crew of 30 works this vessel and traveled all the way from Norway and invaded our tiny village of Greenport.

The trails are well marked and it's a nice, scenic hike through the woods. Even better, on a hot day, the trails are under a canopy providing ample shade. Just note that the trails are narrow and there's quite a bit of poison oak along them so use caution. Also note, the entrance on 25A is hidden but noticeable by the red Audubon Society House. A nice park for a nature walk and recommended.

We like Kenney's beach & McCabe's on the sound but it seems that the beaches on the bay are much calmer and you can keep your umbrella up without the wind blowing it over. Very serene watching the sailboats and shelter island across the bay. The parking is really great and bathrooms are available too. P.S. Go to Billy's by the Bay (Wednesday-Sunday opened only) after to get some lobster as located on the same road :)

It's a cute town full of Great restaurants ranging from Japanese to basic americana food all that I have encountered have been outstanding. The stores are lovely ranging from cute clothings store an outstanding oil store and food markets etc. There is a sweet park in town Where you can chill out and see the boats etc. so beautiful I love it.

Horton Point Light is a lighthouse on the north side of Eastern Long Island, New York in the hamlet of Southold. The current lighthouse was built and the tower was first lit in 1857. The site is on a bluff 60 feet above Long Island Sound. The tower was automated in 1933 and is now operational. The tower is 58 feet high with the focal plane of the light being 103 feet above sea level. The tower is white with a black lantern and a copper dome. The light has a slow green flash every ten seconds. The lighthouse was a commissioned by George Washington himself in 1790 though the land was not acquired until 1855. It is still an active aid to navigation and when it's open to the public, visitors can climb the tower. [Review 15313 overall, 815 of 2021, round number 200 in New York.]

Horton Point Lighthouse, operated by the Southold Historical Society, is an interesting diversion…read morefor an hour or so if you're in the area. The lighthouse is an operating lighthouse. There's a small local naval history museum on the ground floor open on weekends between Memorial Day and Columbus Day, staffed by volunteers who are knowledgeable, friendly, and warm. Visitors to the lighthouse may climb to the top of the lighthouse when the museum is open. Some dexterity is required to do this, including the ability to climb narrow, winding stairs, and a short ladder. Temperatures in the lantern room can exceed outside temperatures by more than several degrees. I surmise that visiting the lantern room may not be possible when the weather is extremely hot. There's a lovely pebble beach here, assessed by wooden stairs near the parking lot. Both the stairs and the beach, with large boulders strewn about, are very photo worthy. On a clear day, one may see across Long Island Sound to the shores of Connecticut. There's a set of picnic tables on the lighthouse grounds, too. Other Comments: - Waze gave us wrong directions for the last turn. A turn onto Lighthouse Road, which is the correct way to reach the lighthouse's parking lot, should have been the last instruction. Instead of doing this, Waze directed us westward past Lighthouse Road to turn onto a private road. - Parking is $5. Admission to the lighthouse is an additional $5 per individual, or $10 per family. The admission fee comes with a Southold Historical Society "Visitor's Passport," which gives the bearer one free visit to Society's Maple Lane Museum Complex. - Verizon Wireless signal here is wonky -- OK in some places, but non-existent in others. Be sure to coordinate with your group members in-person before you wander the grounds. - There are reasonably maintained men's and women's bathrooms.
