I've been to Porta with groups big, small, and even on my own. The food is just so good. All the pasta dishes are amazing. I know they're known for their pizza, which is great, but the pasta--and especially the ricotta and meatballs--are top-tier. They also have my favorite drinks in the area. All the "door" drinks are amazing, especially the White Door. I could drink like 10 of those, and on weekdays during happy hour, it would even be very reasonably priced! Ah, this place. I have never been so fooled. Entered the place with the promise of masterfully-done pizza and good drinks surrounded by an atmosphere of class. What I got was an abysmally long wait for my food, the realization that (when finally obtained) the pizza was sub-par, and being surrounded by folks who clearly had too much to drink. Enjoyed what we tried here. We made rooftop reservations and enjoyed a bottle of wine with a margarita pizza. The rooftop is nice with great music playing. However the food menu is limited up there and wish we had known that before. The pizza was good, nice charring on the crust that's also has a hint of salt. The sauce was simple, tangy and fresh tasting. The whole thing did get bit soggy but no big complaint. We had to move back downstairs for the full menu and ordered the corn risotto and orchiettte pasta (without the sausage). The risotto was unique with a corn purée and fennel on top but desperately needed salt and some other spices/herbs. The pasta was great, al dente and spicy and my favorite thing!!!...served hot! I wouldn't come here there seems to be a new manager, I assume he's a nice guy, but all he does is bring his friends and family in and ignores everybody else. I was sitting at the bar for quite a while and I am going to assume his girlfriend showed up I don't know and then moved me for his and his girlfriend's convenience as well as sending his friends shots etc all the things around everybody else sitting at the bar. I went without many times all night having to flag someone down because they were too busy with their friend. It seems to be one of those situations where you are not special unless you know the manager, and I was left with a very bad taste in my mouth. When you want good pizza with good vibes and lots of wine and plenty of space, you go to Porta. When I lived in Hoboken, I still found my way to Porta in JC pretty often. Grove Street is just one of my favorite places to be, especially this little promenade. My most recent trip to porta was right before Christmas and I left full on pizza, red wine and also left lugging a Christmas tree. YEP. An actual normal sized, lovely Christmas tree. They do a promotion around the holidays where you can get two margarita pies, a carafe of wine and a Christmas tree for $60. If you are wondering what the catch is, there really isn't one. The pizza was wonderful and delicious and cheesy, the house wine was super good and my tree was perfect. I have many pictures to prove it. Had a late lunch today and unfortunately it was pretty disappointing. I am a long time customer, since the beginning... I know it's had to maintain consistent standards but ... Ordered my usual Three Trees salad: it came out first- an obscenely large amount of salad (I get this all the time and believe me this was double the usual) but it was almost all arugula, very little radicchio and basically no endive. As for the almonds and pancetta next to nill also. and completely overdressed! Next came the meatball pizza. looked smaller and messier than usual and very under cooked / soggy. Porta has the potential to be classy, but it's not quite there yet. It has a beautiful open space when you enter, but the decor is cheap and tacky. I think they need to revamp it a little with better furniture and lighting. The pizzas are not great here. Out of all the pizzas my table ordered, I liked the 14 1/2 because the pepperoni gave it flavor. The margarita pizza and meatball pizza were very sad looking. Service was meh. Took a while for our server to give us the check. The pizza and rooftop dining was good. Because we sat on the roof deck, there was a limited menu (which we knew beforehand). We got the corn pizza, vegan tomato pie, the summer heirloom tomato pizza, and the Bibb salad. Our favorite was by far the heirloom tomato pizza. The tomatoes were in season, and the goat cheese added good flavor. The other two pizzas didn't blow us away- the corn pizza did not have much corn given the name, and the vegan pie was a little too salty/garlicky to really enjoy. The Bibb salad was a perfect addition to our meal. The Gorgonzola and apricot dressing was a great combination. Large pub located right in front of the grove street station. Very spacious that any group could easily find the table. Came for brunchtime pizzas on a Saturday. There's a bar up front with seating and a massive back room with picnic-style tables and benches. The bar area was pretty quiet (in terms of both people and noise) the back area was pretty noisy. Service was decent and friendly. I wasn't expecting much of the food tbh so we were pleasantly surprised. I had a 14 1/2 pizza which was nicely spicy and well-cooked. The Mr. had a Calzone which he enjoyed, it was served with a small dish of Marinara sauce which was a nice touch but would have been even nicer had it been warm rather than 'straight out of the fridge cold'. I'm loving Porta's rooftop for summer outdoor dining. Definitely make a reservation for dinner though (especially on the weekend) - I saw many parties being turned away, and even with reservations, my party still had to wait ~20 min for the table to be cleared for us. As for pizzas, nearly every one I've tried was fantastic (the pesto and the 14 1/2 were my favorites), but sadly one pizza called Gentle Giant was a big disappointment. While it sounds so delicious on paper (cashew cream, squash blossoms, oregano, extra virgin olive oil), the pizza itself was almost...tasteless? Barely any squash and nothing "creamy" about it...I've had plenty of delicious and flavorful vegan pizzas before, but this one was a pretty big let down. Besides that one vegan pizza, everything else was great here - my friends and I had several drinks and enjoyed relaxing and catching up on the rooftop. Service was also very friendly and helpful. I went here for a friends birthday and the food was delicious! It was raining but they have a covered part on the roof with a full bar and a pizza oven. Everything was tasty, and Eric had great recommendations for food and drink. The pizzas are personal sized (for me, others might have leftovers...) and it was nice to get a few and share since it was really hard to decide! You can't go wrong with any of them but their take on the pepperoni was so good. I liked my short rib pizza because it was unique and you cannot go wrong with pickled onions. Another perfect dinner from Porta (this time, delivery) solidifying that they can really do no wrong. Porta was closed during the first few weeks of Covid, but they've recently opened back up for pick-up and delivery. They have a very organized pick-up system on both sides of the shop -- you can pull your car up on the Columbus side or walk up on the Newark ave side. The menu is a little more limited -- we normally always order the sausage pasta, but now it's mainly just pizzas and some salads. Our order was the perfect share for two. Meatball pizza is always a must, and it's my favorite pizza at Porta. Their meatballs are fab and the pizza comes with a generous amount. I'm usually torn between adding on fresh ricotta or mozzarella, but the ricotta might just be the best out of the two. It's creamy and delicious and topped with olive oil and sea salt. They suggest adding on a baguette, but for a few extra dollars my suggestion is to add on a focaccia. The focaccia is lemony and garlicky deliciousness and comes with fresh rosemary and more sea salt on top. This with the ricotta is an unbreakable combo. Finally, even though it sounds simple the broc rab really steals the show. This might sound weird, but the order comes with capers, green olives and pistachios. An interesting mix but it works so well together and adds a little greenery to an otherwise carb-heavy meal. Looking forward to the day when I can sip on a frozen spritz atop the roof (with an order of pasta) but until then Porta take-out will certainly do the trick. read more

I can tell you one thing, I know a pizza is good, when I eat the crust. The pizza was absolutely delicious. I ordered the 14 1/2 and my friend ordered a vegan pie. We both devoured our pizzas to the end, including the crust! I also loved my cocktail, the Free Fallin'. Absolutely delicious! I live not far from Newark Ave and tried Porta for the first time for takeout since currently there are no dine-ins. My friend and I ordered two pies online: 1 margherita, and 1 carbonara for the two of us. When we got there to pick up, we waited outside and they called your name when your order is ready. The restaurant front is super adorable and they were also selling dranks to-go. I've been to the Asbury and Philly locations and wanted to try out the JC location. It was very lively for a Thursday night. We made a reservation for the rooftop but after realizing the menu was limited, we were able to sit inside and have access to the full menu. We ordered the Monday night gnocchi and the summer betty pie. The pasta was great! The double portion was enough to feed two people. I'm giving 4 stars because the pizza was more on the soggy side. I will say we were extremely surprised by the bill, we ordered carafe of champagne on Easter Sunday. Came here for some drinks and pizza, and it was packed! I was told it would be 45 minutes, but I found a way not to wait. They are mainly catering for diners. The bar is a basic hangout spot, and not meant to watch any sports games. I tried both bars including the one downstairs. It's located in a small room with a weird feel. Nonetheless, the bars serve drinks and the staff were friendly yet quite busy. I have been here some time ago on a Saturday night, and at that time they had opened up the dining area to make it a dance floor. They had a DJ to make it a nice night. My gripe is the food. This place is known for their pizza, and the pie I got was sad looking. I had ordered a Margherita pie, and the toppings were scattered in a way that made me feel disgusted. How can you call this a masterpiece? Maybe 5 pieces of basil, the cheese looked like someone throw a glob of it in one part of the dough, and called it a day. NOT COOL! As for the Nutella pie, it's hard to say anything can taste bad when you put nutella on it. I wasn't impressed though. It could have had more "umph" to it. Food: Is hearty - portion sizes are there but the flavors aren't mindblowing. I would say the exception was the meatballs - definitely get those. Service: We may have just gone on a busy night, but it took at least 5-10min to flag someone down whenever we needed to order something. This is a big restaurant with a nice pizza ovens however I have mixed feelings about it. The service wasn't that great when we were there as the server just wasn't that informative or that efficient. Looking at the menu it seems like they focus on the pizzas, but when I try to add a topping to one of the pizzas she said it was not allowed due to trademark restrictions. Come again? How is adding pepperoni to one of the pizzas against their restaurant law? Porta is one of my favorite pizza places in Jersey city but sadly their service quality has dwindled over time. We had to wait more than the acceptable amount of time for our food and drinks to arrive and even for the check. But it wasn't a bad experience over all. Having said that the food here is still great. I was at Porta recently (for the first time after a year) and the pizza was just as good as always. We got a Rita & Mark and an Arugula pizza along with the must-have Mozarella ! Everything was flavorful :) It was a pleasant evening and we got a table on their Rooftop. They have a fair selection of cocktails. We ordered the Fire Island along with Purple rain. Pretty good drinks as well. Finished the meal with a Nutella pizza which was a treat !
