Wine bars and small plates, these are a few of my favorite things... While visiting Bend, it's nearly impossible to find a wine bar or wine tasting...yeah I know, I'm spoiled living in Oregon's wine country....but Bend is all about the Brews, we get that. Yelp came to our rescue! I don't think we would have found this cute place otherwise. It's off the beaten path, in a "new and upcoming" suburbia of Bend. Kinda like a little strip mall surrounded by houses, like Orenco Station in Hillsboro. I did find it odd that they only have one review, so I asked our server how long they have been here, she replies, 6 yrs! Seriously?? We saw it was a bit busy, so we stopped in. We timed it just right, it was Happy Hour! All wines were $5 a glass, now that's what I call a HH, not just one or two featured wines, but ANY wine from their menu! I chose a Rose and my sweetie had a Spanish red. The pours are generous also. We decided on some nibbles, we ordered the Brushetta, you get to choose four different kinds. The Bruschetta was a little to thick for our liking. The flavors were great though, from the usual mozzarella and tomato to smoked salmon. We also tried the meatballs, nothing special about them, but they were good. The service was great, the food just good, and the wine selection good, I would have like to see more Oregon wines on the menu though. read more

Great Service and food. Unfortunately they serve their red wine very warm so that was kind of a bummer especially for a wine bar.

Pretty underwhelming experience. Nice comfortable relaxed space, only half-full on a Saturday evening, friendly & efficient service. Salads, bruschetta (other than the fig & pistachio option which was amazing) and the seasonal pasta special were all pretty uninspired. A couple more creative better-curated wine options would be welcome. Reasonably priced, but won't return. read more

When I came here this summer, I didn't really know what I wanted. I was killing time, but didn't want to waste it. Portello was not only a great way to spend an hour waiting for dinner, but it was a valuable learning experience. My server was soooo patient with me as I asked all my questions and tried just about every wine on the menu. She graciously allowed me the time to make my choices and guided my decisions. Plus, the white bean hummus I paired with my Sauvignon Blanc really hit the spot (and didn't fill me up too much). This is a great local business to support -- I recommend you do so. read more

Our group of ladies came on a Sunday night and we were pleasantly surprised at how empty the place was. During the week it's hard to get a table! We all have wine and food and loved all of it. Definitely their best selling point is $5-a-glass Mondays! Nice selection of wine, pleasant patio. The food leaves something to be desired. The Albacore Tuna Salad was a canned tuna salad on romaine lettuce. The pasta special, some kind of ravioli, was equally disappointing. WINE'S THE WORD: They really know how to wine and dine you here! In search of a place to have good wine and conversation, we found the Portello Wine Café in NW Crossing. I loved that even on a Friday night, it wasn't too crowded (which is the opposite of the downtown Bend scene). We were able to chat in a comfy and intimate spot. FINE WINE & MORE: They offer a variety of wines, both domestic and international. The wine list is ever-changing, so you won't get bored. We devoured a bottle of Dumas Station's Cow Catcher Red from Walla Walla, Washington. I think the bottle may have had a hole in the bottom because we emptied it fast! They have an awesome happy hour deal: a $5 wine list from 4-6 p.m. Tuesday through Friday. And, if you happen to drag a non-wino fan along, not to fret, because they have a selection of beer too (it's Bend after all!). They also have live bands on Saturday nights so you can enjoy your good wine and bites alongside live music! SMALL BITES: Let me first start off by saying that everything I sank my teeth into at Portello was totally mouth-watering. We oinked out, so we tried many of the offerings on the menu. We started with the warmed olives that were marinated to perfection and served as a perfect compliment to the wine. We moved on to the cheese board, which included 4 cheeses, all of which were heavenly. My favorite was the rosemary goat cheese. The board comes with fruit as well as toast, but I found the toast too thick for some of the milder cheeses. I would have preferred a softer bread for the board. Note that my bf just commented that he wildly disagrees - he loved the toast and described them as having the right amount of chewiness and crunch (he's sleeping on the couch tonight!). We also tried the blue farm salad, a harmony of gorgonzola, dates, walnuts, and pears, amongst a field of mixed greens. I loved that the dressing on this salad was light and applied sparingly so that it did not take away from the other goodies in the salad. Finally, we ended on a bruschetta note. Portello has a wide variety of bruschettas and you get to choose four per order. We tried the mozzarella, tomato, & basil (always a classic favorite), the tuscan white bean with sun-dried tomatoes (a totally unique combo of deliciousness), and the brie with apples (my heart melted for this one!). Like I said, we oinked out! FINAL NOTE: I definitely plan on coming back the next time I'm in Bend. This will probably be my first stop. Okay, family first, then straight to Portello! read more

This is a place that has good food, and good wine, and a good atmosphere. All good, but not great. I think that the bar has a little bit of a "cold" feeling, since it's made of concrete - and the people there are pretty nice, but nothing out of the ordinary. I also think that the prices are a little bit high... but that's probably a result of being in Northwest Crossing. Nothing too cheap over there. Overall, it's probably the second-best place to get a glass of wine in Bend next to Merenda. read more

I am currently working within walking distance of Portello, but it took me 4 months before I walked over and tried it. Now I go every Monday after work for their $5 by the glass. All of the servers are fantastic and very helpful when selecting a good glass to try. I would highly recommend giving it a try. read more

Love the Portello. The food is always so good here I have a hard time picking an entree. I enjoy relaxing in their comfy couch or armchair seating and chatting - they never rush you here and the service is always friendly and pleasant. Last time I went on a Friday evening and there was live acoustic music featuring local artists and one of the artists, Kylen Johnson, was amazing. A real treat. I went for a romantic evening the other night and was reminded again why this place always sticks out in my mind for a great evening out. It's in a somewhat remote, but quaint area in Northwest Crossing's little metropolis. We got a lovely little high top table (we learned from the menu that the tables were from a large recovered tree - sorry, can't be more specific). The waitress brought us some wine and port which were both delicious and flavorful (made us forget about the chilly cold outside the windows). The place was packed and yet everyone seemed cozy and happy. To start we ordered the choice of 4 bruschetta plate which is perfect for an array of tastes! It offers choices with items such as honey walnuts, pesto with salami, Brie and artichoke tapenade. Yum! I believe you choose 4 from 8 selections. At this time we also ordered their chocolate soufflé (as it takes 25 minutes to prepare). For the grand finale the waitress brought out our soufflé. Ahhh! It's just not worth ordering soufflé unless you have a good clue that they will do it right! It was perfectly delicate with a moist center nearly giving weigh under the scoop of vanilla and caramel sauce. It was warm and chocolate-filled. Needless to say it was devoured with lightening speed! I will definitely be returning to this charming little cafe! Oh and they also have occasional live music. read more

Let me begin by saying my family and I have been going to Portello for years and it's always been a favorite - their happy hour, bruschetta boards, macaroni and cheese and desserts are amazing. This visit, I called in advance to ask if the restaurant was seating outdoors. I explained we had a brand new baby days old in the family and we wanted to play it safe with Covid since we would be seeing the baby the next day. The manager, as she introduced herself, said yes to outdoor seating but if it started to rain and the restaurant was full, there's nothing she could do. I told her no problem and we understood. When we arrived, a server at the door told us they were not seating outside. I politely told her the conversation I just had with the manager prior to driving over, so she went to ask the manager. The manager then came outside. With an extremely rude and cold tone, she said "I was who you spoke with on the phone and because it could rain any time this evening, we are not seating outside." When I tried to respond and ask some follow up questions, she simply turned her back on me and began walking back inside, completely ignoring me and my parents when we were clearly not finished with the conversation. I work for a 5 star property in Napa Valley and come from a long line of hospitality professionals. This woman does not belong in the industry and we will not be returning to Portello until we find she is no longer there. We took our business down the block to Washington and they could not have been more accommodating and understanding. read more

This is such a terrific place especially when they have live music! It's exactly what bend needs and I think what other wine bars wish they were but aren't. It's not super strong on the food menu so if you're starving for a steak you better look elsewhere. I don't know why I haven't reviewed this before, but it is time! Love the decor, ambiance and vibe and have been going there for the 5 years we have lived in Bend. Favorites on the menu are the Bruschetta with topping choices to make everyone happy. My husband loves the Mac n Cheese and the salads are REALLY fresh (my favs are the Beet and Chevre and the Hazelnut Spinach). Also love the wine offerings, especially at Happy Hour! We often visit Portello only for a glass of wine and a yummy chocolate souffle for dessert. The service is friendly and attentive. The only suggestion I would have is changing up the menu a bit with new offerings or specials! It hasn't changed much in the last few years. Please don't take away our favorites, though! read more

Visiting from out of state, and was looking for a place to have a nice glass of wine and I found this wonderful place. Walked into the restaurant and was immediately greeted by wonderful and welcoming staff. I sat outside and Erin my server came and greeted me with a warm smile. I ordered a Red Blend and she described the taste to a tee. I ordered their Antipasti plate and it did not disappoint. For dessert I ordered their Chocolate Soufflé and it was to die for. Even though they closed at 9:00, they welcomed late customers with a smile and never let them feel rushed. Overall, this will be my place to come to when visiting Bend. My wife and I stopped in here for lunch during the COBA Home Tour in Bend. It was a 100+ degree day and we were spent from looking at so many homes. First, the service, the food and the beer was all fabulous. It is a rare treat to find some place that does everything perfectly. If I could give more than 5 stars I certainly would. We both had the sausage on ciabatta. They easily accommodated my wife's need for no cheese. They even substituted my beer when I went on an adventure with a new brew I did not like. I believe our waitress' name was Audrey; probably the best serving person I have had in 10 years, no kidding. Great attitude, flawless service--I drink lots of water, so my glass is always near empty...but it never got empty. The owner came over and was very helpful as well. Very cool place, very relaxing. The second we walked in, it It felt like we were in the Pearl District or Belltown (for you Portland and Seattle folk). We had the delicious cheese platter as well as some tasty wines. I used to work across the street from Portello. They have a great happy hour, good light faire and the staff is always attentive.

What a total surprise. We went in for a nice glass of wine but didn't expect such great food. I had the albacore tuna salad. It was bright with a strong lemony flavor. It was obvious that the chef cared and crafted a delicious meal. The staff was knowledgable and helpful. The only reason why I can't give them 5 stars is that they served their red wine at room temperature. It's a common mistake but red wine should absolutely be served a little cooler than room temperature (~60-63) rather than the 75 is all too common. read more
