I found Porter Stable on Yelp and I can tell you this, they live up to the reviews! I needed my living room and 2 bedrooms painted. One of my big complaints in the past in working with painters/handymen has always been that many of them don't treat the space with respect. This couldn't be farther from the truth for Porter Stable. I have a lot of nice furniture and these guys were so careful when rearranging the room to be painted. They were extremely courteous and did an amazing job cleaning up after the work was finished. fact: there is always something broken, malfunctioning or needing to be hung in your shoebox nyc apartment. fact: inviting some random dude into your home can feel super sketchy. fact: michael is professional, friendly, easy to communicate back and forth with and knows his shit. he came over to fix my bathroom door which was coming off the hinges and was in and out in less than 10 minutes. while this probably wasn't the most challenging job he has ever done, it seems that others have used him for a wide range of things. i'm now looking around my place making a mental list of all of the things i could call him back for. i'm so glad i discovered porter stable and glad to have the input from other yelpers to go off of. have you ever tried to look on craigslist for a handyman? don't. read more

Recently I needed help moving an air unit out of my friend's place in the West Village to Park Slope in Brooklyn. He came a mere 15 min later on a rainy night in the middle of the week, used his drill to remove the stripped nail we couldn't take out, and then offered to hold my air unit in his car and deliver it to me when I wanted it installed. The next day he again came in the afternoon when I requested, installed my air unit in mere minutes, and charged me a really fair price. So professional and timely too. As a new resident of New York it's been one hell of a task to get me and my best friends apartment together. We have a basic tool box from Ikea but obviously we can only do so much with it. After having such a great experience with the curtain installation, we enlisted Porter Stable to help us get a lovely -- but gigantic -- wooden table up our narrow stairwell. We'd already attempted to get it in the building during our initial move, but were unable to get the nearly 10 foot long table past the first flight of stairs. Michael met us outside our building this morning and carefully removed two of the legs right there in the U-Haul. Because the table legs were secured with wooden pegs, it was really difficult to get them off without damaging the table, but Michael did it! Then he and his companion (didn't catch his name) were able to miraculously maneuver the table around two sharp corners and two flights of stairs. They quickly reattached the legs and helped us position it in our living room. Not only were they super professional, but they came up with creative solutions for tricky, somewhat atypical job. Honestly, we were really worried that getting the table in our apartment was impossible and were ecstatic to be proven wrong. Michael has made three visits to my LES apartment over the last year and I couldnt be happier with the experience. The first time he helped me do some basic move-in type things: mounting TV, hanging some artwork, ect. Everything came out perfectly especially with him drilling a hole in the wall to hide the TV wires. It made a huge aesthetic difference not having wires and cables all over the place. Very reasonably priced. At the end of his first visit, I then asked him to build me some custom wooden shelving,a small stand to house my TV box, and a solution to hang a pendant lamp without hard-wiring it into a fixture. About a week later he returned with beautifully stained "floating" shelves, a great little stand for my TV box, and some ideas and materials for hiding the pendant wire as we strung it across the ceiling. All made a huge difference in the appearance of my little apartment. A few weeks ago i had a small issue with one of the custom shelves. Free of charge, he came by and fixed it right up. I am going to join the laundry list of people who have used Michael's services and rave about the work he did. My wife and I had a mixture of large artwork, smaller framed pictures, and intricately placed framed photos that we needed help with and Michael delivered with excellent work. Michael installed two of my air conditioners last year, so when the third one (we have a 3 bedroom) wasn't functioning this summer, I called him for help. He came over today and fixed it very quickly, and while he was here, he fixed the wobbly door of my dresser, too. I was in contact with Michael and two other contractors, and in the end I chose Porter Stable, and am very glad I did. Michael was the first contractor to email me back out of anyone, got me an estimate, and came to do the job within days of me first emailing him. Michael installed three curtain rods and a bike rack in just over an hour with perfect efficiency. The wall that was to hold the bike turned out to be hollow -- I had no idea -- so Michael ditched the screws that came with the rack and fished some hardware out of his bag that would ensure both bike and rack stayed put. - Punctual - Friendly - Super professional - Has his own ladder (strangely not the case for all handymen I contacted) - Made sure to help return my furniture to its original configuration after all was said and done - Stuck to the original, very reasonable estimate even though the job took slightly longer than anticipated thanks to my dumb fake wall Really just a lovely experience all around. Summary: If you need TV mounting done, get it done by a pro who's full time job is TV mounting so that if there are any "curve balls" they can easily and readily achieve higher satisfaction. I would not be calling his services again and I'm now looking for another "handyman." In Depth Review: Although somewhat skeptical on the all-5-star reviews listed on Yelp, I readily went into contacting Michael for the jobs I needed done. PROS - Easy to communicate with, easy to schedule, communicates via text. Showed up at a general time (no appointment made but this didn't bother me as I was very flexible that day) and went straight to work. Finished in a timely manner though I was not completely satisfied with the finished product. CONS - Contacted him again about it and if adjustments could be made, seemed unwilling to do so though it probably doesn't fall within his range of specialty. I regret not using a specialty service and paying an extra $20 to get the job done right instead of a "jack of all trades." Now I have to pay an extra $170 to redo his job the way I want, which, quite frankly, is a huge waste of time and money. I also wanted a few other jobs done around the house which fell under his type of work (as per review and as per his own statement) which he didn't seem interested in. I've used Michael about three times. He's personable, good at communicating, and does the job well. He's prepared, and doesn't dilly dally which is good since you pay by the hour. You should note however that it's a bit pricey... last time I used him in August, his rate had gone up to $100 / hour. I know it's hard to find good handymen but...surely there must be others out there who don't charge quite this much? My goal is to try and find them. ;-) read more
