As a first time client, I did not have a positive experience. My stylist was very nice, but she was not vigilant in keeping her tools clean. The styling brushes she was going to use on my hair were not clean and had other peoples hair wrapped around and there was lint clogging the blow dryers filter. I asked the stylist not to use those brushes on my hair and asked her if she could get clean ones. She left me in the chair and I assumed she was going to get clean brushes but instead she went to the Manager who came to me and said the stylist was unable to finish because she was now uncomfortable and self-conscious. I explained my intention was not meant to be hurtful because I assumed she could just get clean brushes. So I only got 1 of 3 services I had booked, the Manager did not apologize for the dirty brushes and also didn't comp my service. I paid $85 and left. As I had a few days to think about my bad experience, several factors are important. #1 Poor cleaning and poor hygiene is a no-no, the stylist and the salon could be fined and their licenses affected. #2 The Manager did not apologize for the bad hygiene and seemed to indicate I was the problem for asking the stylist for clean brushes. The stylist did not have any other clients and during the 30 minutes my color was processing, she could have cleaned her tools but she did not. She was in the back somewhere. #3 This is an Aveda salon and I high expectations for quality of service and was let down. I do not recommend this salon. read more

Emma was very nice and gave me exactly the haircut I asked for. She took time to make sure it was properly blended, texturized, and styled. Because she's a junior stylist, she asked other stylists to help her when there were techniques she was less confident in. She recommended a clay and showed me how to use it when I asked about what would work best to style it. I love my new haircut! I'll be returning soon for another haircut or color! It's a little out of my way, but so worth it. Great service. They have AWESOME colorists and have saved me from hair dye disaster. Although all of them are talented, Renee is my favorite. I never find weird uncut pieces or a hair out of place. The people who work there have style. And that's what you're going to them for. So many places in State College are all run by people who look like Kate Gosselin's sister. Sorry, but it's the truth. Portfolio is just the best in town. read more

I'll be the first to admit that hair wise, I'm an easy client. Though thick, my hair is really manageable. I went to Melanie, she just moved here from California. She's really fun and personable, but not too personal. She also focused her attention on me the entire time, as opposed to chatting, etc. I had no idea how I wanted my hair cut, so I just kind of put myself in her hands. She talked me through her general vision, but then also through each step as she did it, making sure I was okay with the length, layers, etc; it was very much a collaborative process. Even now a few weeks later, I'm still very happy with the results, both in the cut and in my ease of styling. Overall, the only reason it isn't 5 is because it seems a tad bit pricey for Boalsburg-- but I'm fine with paying $40+ tip for a such a good, enjoyable experience with excellent results. read more

Portfolio is great. The have excellent service. They're friendly, accommodating, and have a nice atmosphere. And they give you a free maintenance cut two weeks after your haircut. It's definitely worth the short drive to Boalsburg. read more

This salon is great. I have seen several stylists over the year here, and currently see Dan, who is fabulous. The staff are all very professional and I have never had a bad experience here. Dan does a great job of giving advice about and giving cuts that suit your hair/face rather than just giving a "cookie cutter" skill cut. It took me 3 tries to find a salon I liked when I moved here. So glad I found them. My entire family now goes here. They are equally good a men's and women's cuts. read more

I wish I could give this place 0 stars. I have been going here to get my hair cut here for the last year. I like them so much I reserved them to do the hair for my wedding in July. Today, I called the salon to ask about an upcoming appointment and was told that my stylist no longer works at the salon and that they can no longer do the hair for our party. NO ONE called me after she left to alert me of the change so that I could make new plans. With less than 2 months to go until our wedding, it has been impossible finding a replacement. I couldn't even get the owner of the salon to call me and apologize. This is completely unacceptable and very frustrating for a customer who previously supported this salon. You should not treat your customers this way, especially for such an important life event. read more

First time clients beware of price point. I've rated this salon low based upon the surprising cost, otherwise the service was average. I have been going to Aveda salons for years in California. While visiting Pa. this summer I visited this salon for a color touch up and a gloss. Lauren charged me $163. I have no idea how that number was reached. I brought my color formula with me so she didn't have to figure that out. My hair is thick and to my shoulders. But, I have never paid more than $120 for this service. I walked out feeling taken advantage of. Next time I went to Peles in Johnstown which charged me $85 for a color touch up and cut. I just wanted to spread the news of the wonderful service I received at your salon this past Saturday. Being newer to the area I have been relying on Yelp to meet any needs I may have. This can be great or terrible however in the case of Portfolio it was fabulous! The staff warmly greeted me, took my coat and offered me a drink. The stylist Kayla that did my hair and makeup was phenomenal! She was friendly, listened to my needs and shared her own creative ideas and gave me a look that showed that she is truly an artist in her industry! In addition to being so happy with the services I was so completely relaxed by the atmosphere, music and people! As I checked out I was able to buy the lip color that the stylist had provided which is always a plus in my book as I've had makeup applied before and then been disappointed when the lip color would be off after a drink! I was so excited when I got to the charity ball and was done up appropriately! Also my husband and I went on to win the raffle for a back facial from Portfolio salon/spa! What a wonderful day thanks to Portfolio! Thank you so much! I will definitely be returning! read more
