On a road trip and wanted something quick and easy for lunch. One of the riders hadn't been to a Portillo's before and wanted to try it. This location had plenty of parking and seating, so that was a big plus. Service was very quick here, even though it was pretty busy. I decided to try something new and got the beef bowl, which was basically the beef sandwich without the bread. I liked it, even though it was pretty liquidy (it is an Italian beef, after all). The kiosks are a nice addition so that you don't have to wait in line to order, but I had cash and had to walk up to the first cashier, who was very helpful, polite and friendly. I ordered the 2 hotdog meal and she let me mix them up: 1 Chicago Style hotdog with one Chilidog with extra onions. I also got crinkle fries and an Arnold Palmer to drink. The vibe (ambience) was nice. They were playing big band & jazz music from the 30's and 40's. Good stuff. I usually don't sit down inside and eat there, but go through the drive thru, but I don't regret taking a moment to enjoy a good hotdog and relax. Check them out when you're in the area. read more

We had stopped here due to us needing something to eat on our way back home. We had went through the drive through which service was slow. They had took our order but then we sat in the line for a while. After we got to the checkout window we had paid and then they asked us to pull to the side to wait for the food and they would bring it out to us. We waited maybe 10min and then they brought the food out to us. The food was delicious and there wasn't any issues with it. Prices are on the higher end but it's worth it. read more

Merrillville location: Went through the drive up tonight... Ordered a rodeo burger, onion rings, 2 orders of fries, and an Italian beef. Got home and did NOT have my Rodeo burger! I live a hour away (Illinois) from the restaurant, tried to call and was placed on hold for 20 minutes only to have someone hang up when I said I had a complaint! Called back and was hung up on again when I asked for a manager! I will never stop at an Indiana Portillo's again because this also happened at the one on US 41! On our recent road trip back from vacation, we found ourselves north of Indy and needing food for the fam. Cue the delicious hotdogs and Italian beef that Portillo's can provide! It was a bit of chaos when we arrived, but we were able to find a table. My husband went up to order, and we got our food relatively quickly. I love that these Chicago dogs are the star of the table, but on this most recent visit I actually went with the Italian beef with the au jus on the side. It hit the spot that you crave on a road trip. The kids liked their hot dog and chicken tender meals, and we all shared a slice of chocolate cake. Small Chocolate Cake Shake. Truly and honestly delicious. You taste the cake, the frosting and the amazing quality. The base chocolate of the shake is also sublime - not too rich. The large is absolutely massive - so you'll be safe getting the small even if you are splitting. Plant-based Garden Dog. Does exactly what it needs to do! I went here as a member of a very large (60+ member) choir. They were so helpful and made it easy to get our food. I always feel bad being a big group going to restaurants and overwhelming the staff, but they were very well prepared. Decor was super cool and the food was yummy! What more can I ask for! The company went public a few years back; which resulted in the predictable path of stripping down the menu; increasing the prices, and reducing service/quality. It is now simply OK; nothing special, and we rarely go anymore as there are better options. read more

I took my grandkids to Portillo's Merrillville for lunch today. I ordered them chicken tender meals and I had a number 1 (beef sandwich) when I picked up my food there was no fries, I asked for my fries and she said you didn't order any, I said I got meals , she said everything is ala carte now . So I go back to the counter I ordered at and it says big as day " all meals come with fries and a drink. " I ask the girl at the register about it and she says " oh yeah well that's false advertising " if you're not giving fries with your meals Don't advertise that you are . We are not from Chicago but wanted to try Chicago-style hotdogs. Yes, I know this is a chain and perhaps there are better options out there, but for out-of-towners, this was a really nice experience. We all had Chicago dogs and everyone enjoyed them. The mix of flavors and textures were enjoyed by all. A few made substitutions but agreed original Chicago dogs were the best. The fries are crinkle cut and hot. As a fan of crinkle cut fries, I really enjoyed them. We also tried a few different milkshakes. The vanilla milkshake is exactly what you expect. Delicious if you like vanilla shakes, pretty basic if you don't. My son had the chocolate cake shake. He really enjoyed it. The restaurant was pretty busy at lunch time but there was plenty of seating and didn't feel overly crowded or loud. There were both self-service kiosks and counter ordering options. The food took 10-15 minutes to come out which was understandable given the busyness during our visit. Everything was correct and packed nicely. Very positive experience and would go back to try some of their other delicious looking menu items. read more

if I could give them zero stars I would my family and I ordered food and more than half of my order was missing and the food we did get was disgusting the bun of the hot dog was so soggy my mom couldn't pick it up to eat it the beefs had almost no meat and we asked for it extra dipped with hot peppers and it was super dry half of our guest didn't wat because the ribs, burger, salad, and other items that were missing we called and the girl basically said well it's not our fault that you didn't get the order. My favorite Portillo's at the present. The drive thru is fast as well as walking in. If they make a mistake they will fix it for you and the service is awesome for that. The decor is vintage and my kids love looking up to see what they'll find in the rafters. My go to is the Italian beef but you won't go wrong with the cheeseburger, hotdog or fish sandwich. I have eaten at this Portillo multiple times over the years. They are all pretty much the same. The only thing I have noticed is the prices have gone up significantly over the past few months or maybe longer. Service is pretty fast and the food is consistent. Was with 3 coworkers returning from a business meeting. Caught the restaurant at a busy time on a Turs evening, literally a bus full of kids and adults; quite noisy for a while, but then they cleared out. Left a bit of chaos on the tables etc. But we found a cleanish table and wiped it more. Getting our food took a while - even longer than usual - because of the crowd. Food was good when we got it. Road trip stop, we went inside to use the restroom prior to ordering. My gag reflex kicked activated in the hallway. Restroom was gross, dirty, with sticky floors and stopped and I flushed toilets. We ordered two hotdogs and two shakes and waited and waited and waited. Finally our number was called and we received two hot dogs and one shake. Checking our receipt, that's what we paid for- bad on us for not checking. The service counter was a collection of people yelling and things beeping and buzzing, all the while the cold air was blowing in behind us. (An investment in double doors would have been money well spent). My hot dog was sad and had a disconcerting crunch when biting the casing. The fries were dumped in the bag. Anyone who calls this fast or food is sadly mistaken. After a nonstop flight from Reno (8/14 around 6pm) and a drive from Midway, during rush hour this was my first stop before my hotel. I ordered a Caesar salad. I waited over 45 minutes for my order. When I opened it at the hotel my salad was all iceberg lettuce in large chunks. For over $17.00 I received a poor excuse for a salad and an unsweetened ice tea. I am SO disappointed in this slow chain restaurant. Anyone in the area, White Castle is next door! read more

Pretty darn tasty Italian Beef sandwiches. I tried a regular with both sweet and hot peppers, it definitely has a lot of flavor and was much bigger than I expected. If you don't like wet sandwiches, it's probably not the right sandwich for you. Also had a small chocolate shake and it was on point as well. It was also bigger than most smalls out there.
