The restaurant gets one star for the food. The cavatappi with sausage is in an overpowering mustard sauce. I did read the menu; I knew the sauce had mustard in it, but it should be so much more subdued. All I tasted was mustard, nothing else. It even overwhelmed the minuscule amounts of sausage in the dish. I complained to the waiter and asked him to bring me some vodka sauce so I could drown out the mustard sauce; he did, but no apology was included. The pizza and lobster/ crab ravioli were fair. Ravioli were kind of tough. Why Did it get more than one star???? The waiter was very nice and helpful ( other than not sympathizing with me when I complained about my awful meal and had clearly eaten less than 10% of it). Been coming here for years. Last Saturday will be the last time they see me. When I first came here it was great. Now they give you little bread brickettes. The calamari resembled fried rubber bands. I commented on it to the server and all he said was he was sorry. We didn't eat it and was still charged $12. My wife ordered the ravioli. I used to take dates here when we'd go to the beach and I used to go here with buddies on Saturday nights. They used to have a jazz trio and it was a good time. Well, the weather has been fantastic and the wife wanted to do date night, so we headed out to Grand Haven and froze to death while walking the pier. And then we went to warm up at Porto Bello. Must have been prom night because a large group of dressed up highschoolers was on their way out as we came in. The place was a bit disheveled, but they pretty much got it together right away, other than cleaning my table well. The vinyl table cloth had remnants of the previous occupants meal all over. Fortunately for me, I used the plate. The food was good, and inexpensive, but pretty basic fare. Actually I recalled it being more expensive than it was, so I was pleased. I had manicotti and I think that set me back $11. Bread and a salad are served with the meal, and we had a bruschetta like appetizer that was pretty good. I always recalled the pizza being really good, and as a few went by, I regretted not getting one. Those still looked fantastic. The service was very good, and I really enjoy the atmosphere of the place, the food just isn't what I recalled. There was a band, and they played some jazz numbers, and folks danced, but they also did lots of requests. I heard a few Buffett songs, Dionne Warwick, other stuff. Pretty good Italian place right by the waterfront in Grand Haven. The location is the main attraction, though we sat inside. Try to get on the deck if you can. We have lived in Grand Haven all our lives and have always enjoyed our outings to Portobello. My husband left the decision on reservations for Valentines Day to me and I chose them again. The food (prime rib) and the server were outstanding. After our meal, we decided to stay and enjoy the trio that was playing some old jazz songs (my personal favorite). We had a couple of more cocktails and the trio was amazing. When we left, our adult daughter (who has Down Syndrome) gave the rose they had given me with our check to the lovely young woman who was singing with the trio. She hugged out daughter and made her evening. A wonderful Valentines evening. Couldn't have asked for better. read more

We enjoyed our lunch here yesterday (8/31/19). My children have an array of food allergy issues and the manager, wait staff, and cook/chef, were extremely accommodating. I had the perch and thought it was very good. My daughters had GF penne pasta with chicken and GF pizza, and my son had a regular pizza. Wife had a Caprese Salad and Garlic Aioli fries. I asked the waiter when it was made and he said it was pre made then frozen. I asked how long ago it was made he didn't know. I have a feeling a week or more. For the $17 price I would expect something fresh. I had two bites of the meatballs that were so salty I couldn't eat anymore. This is our second trip to GH and we decided to try Porto Bello this time. When we were here last summer, there was a line going out the door of people waiting to get in so we figured it was good. Since we ran out of time last year, we chose to go this time. Since we have kids, we did the "early bird special" and went to dinner between 5 and 5:30. It was a good time to go since it was relatively empty and we were able to sit outside at a great table on the patio. The host was really pleasant and our waitress was also very nice and attentive. We made one huge mistake: we didn't ask how big the portions were. Had we done that we would not have ordered our son a kids meal. My husband had the veal parm and I had the lobster and crab ravioli. The veal parm was huge, probably 3 meals worth. The ravioli was good size too, even the kids ravioli was big. The prices were comparable to what we would spend in Chicago so that wasn't a surprise to us. The veal and ravioli were about $17 a plate so with the kids meal and no alcohol, our bill was $54 with tip, acceptable for a good restaurant with good scenery. Would have liked to try something from the wine list, but maybe when we travel without the kids! read more

I think that I may have loved this place. Some delicious pasta. Sadly, no Moretti beer. But delicious pasta. Our waitress, Jentry, was awesome! Very sweet and pleasant. Always there when we needed something. Wonderful service. It was also nice and quiet in here as well. Would love to have tried more food here. I'm sure it's all delightful. Not too crowded, which is nice. Think we may have beat the crowd though. Might have been a bit on the pricey side, but perhaps the price evened out with the quality. Who knows? My fiancé and my Dad split a pizza, and right away I realized that the crust was pre-made, from the line along the crust. In my mind, that's a major no no if you're going to sell pizza. This was some of the best service we had. Even with limited staff and on a holiday weekend we were able to get a table within an hour. Staff informed us of delays right off the bat. They kept our drinks full and when the food did come it was delicious. We are so happy they were open on Sunday. We will definitely be back. To the other naysayers, if you don't realize what COVID has done to the restaurant industry then stay home. These restaurants are hiring anyone willing work because they have to or they will not survive. They may not be the best but they are working the best they can. Be patient and tip overly well. Bad service is better than no service or not being open at all. Supply chains are down so they will run out of items. Eh. We chose this place to eat because we wanted to bike by the water, and thought we'd stop here first for dinner. Also, we have two kids and thought the outside seating would be more kid-friendly. The food was OK... nothing special. I had shrimp scampi and my husband had seared tuna. The kids had spaghetti and macaroni and cheese. Hard to mess those up. However, my son was very disappointed that there was no pizza on the kids' menu- "But it says PIZZA on the sign!" he kept saying. I just wasn't willing to get him an entire pizza for $13. The place is like fazolli's if they charged 4 times as much. The sangria tasted like a pina colada. If you've had a good sangria, it shouldn't taste anything like pina colada. The food was so overpriced. If you like overpriced spaghetti, this is your spot. Otherwise, go elsewhere. read more

Food here is really bad and is sooooooooo overpriced. We won't be going back. I usually forgive and forget a place like this but felt I needed to leave a review because of the way-overpriced menu. I felt ripped off. First off, the service was good and acceptable. Everyone was friendly, classy and helpful. Full tip and no stars off for that. As for the food... Oof... Spinach and artichoke dip appetizer came with crumbled up grocery store chips scattered on the dish and a lackluster tasting overly greasy dip paired. Buns were good but overcooked and rock hard on the bottom. Salad was obviously from a bag and wilted. The Cavattapi Con Salsiccia had an overpowering mustard flavor that just couldn't be forgiven and is still tainting my taste buds a few hours later. The Seared Tuna wasn't fresh tasting and was overdone on the outside and appropriately done on the inside. It was served with underdone noodles and a balsamic "reduction" that was not reduced, it was overly liquidy and the flavor was really overbearing and vinegary - like the type of balsamic you'd get at a McDonald's. Again, all this would have been forgivable had it not been for the pricing at $20 a plate. The best part of the meal was my All Day IPA from Founders. But even that was served with about an inch of foam on top. We will not be going back and it makes for a notable enough experience that I will actively tell my friends to avoid it too. read more

11/13/17 - On a whim, we stopped here on our way out of town yesterday and had the most delicious Italian dinner. The fried ravioli was crisp and stuffed with cheese and the baked ziti was covered in cheese and served with delectable meatballs smothered with rich marinara sauce. The plate comes covered in this thick cheese, underneath was overlooked chicken and dry sauce less pasta. The chicken couldn't even be cut with a knife. The shrimp scampi with a white wine garlic sauce was tasteless ( If I hadn't have read the menu I wouldn't have known what I was eating). The steak was cooked nicely but the asparagus was totally limp and full of salt. Sauce on the meatballs was hot but tasteless. Salad was bagged and had a watered down dressing. I have three teenage kids and they all left the majority of their food on the plate. This place got nothing right. The best thing that was served to us was the fried green beans (which were frozen). No one even acknowledged us, even though a server walked by us and we saw another one waiting tables. The hostess walked by and we told her we had never been waited on.
