We were here to celebrate a birthday with a party of 12 . We were seated promptly . The restaurant was not busy for. Friday night which is an indication of years of mediocrity. Our waitress was experienced and helpful , meatballs were a good app , but apps for the group came out piecemeal instead of at once. Entrees were nothing special , as they included basic Italian fare and Boone was wowed. Again we give great props to our server but bartender was a disappointment, struggled to get basic shot and pop drinks correct . Reviews are important to me. Saw this had mixed reviews but tried anyway. Loved the character of the space - old piano factory.. Our server, Ishi was very friendly and attentive. Bread is provided and was warm and wonderful. We had the Chicken Marsala and the Chicken Parmesan; we each had a portion of both. Plenty of food to share one meal if not terribly hungry (2 chicken breasts per meal). Marsala sauce was very good! Overall experience was great. Would come back again. read more

the service was fine, but there was a piece of chicken in my Alfredo when I had asked for broccoli (not chicken at all). I am a vegetarian, so this was horrifying to me. I had already eaten a good portion of it too. They told me that they comped the appetizer for the "small mistake." This is not a small mistake. It's zero disregard for my dietary preferences. Good thing I wasn't allergic to chicken! They advertise "vegetarian options" but apparently don't care enough to make sure they're actually vegetarian and that there's no cross contamination. We dined at Portobello on the Sunday of Labor Day weekend, so it may be a better place to eat on a normal weekend. The restaurant is conveniently located near downtown Grand Haven and has both indoor and outdoor seating. When we arrived we found the place more than half empty, but were told only outdoor seating was available. It was 95 degrees, but the kids needed to eat and it was getting late. Needless to say, the same empty seats were there when we left over an hour later. Food here is Italian and pretty standard with a large menu. Prices are OK for a lake house town, but the quality isn't too great. We shared a few appetizers and the French fries with aioli were the stand out. We had 2 pizzas and the extra thin was much better. Both tasted like fast food pizza and were 14". The chicken parmesan was OK, but was covered in an obscene amount of cheese. They could have put some the extra cheese on the pizza to make it a bit better! The lobster ravioli was extremely spicy and didn't have much lobster. Final kicker was the waiter. Pretty good service throughout the meal and nice guy. He dropped the bill and then when we wanted to confirm if a tip was included (20% on 8 or more) he was no where to be found. For like 15 minutes. We found another waitress and she confirmed it was included. I am skeptical if he just figured we would add tips again - it wasn't brought to our attention. read more

Unfortunately the last 3 times we have eaten here we NEVER are served our appetizers. I have never been at a restaurant where ordering a salad and calamari is so difficult to remember. For our last night in Grand Haven, we decided to give Portobello a try. Before going we noticed a lot of mixed reviews but decided to risk it anyways. We came at 6 PM on a Saturday night without knowing how busy it would be. The restaurant wasn't packed and there were tables open but we were told our wait would be 30 minutes. A little Frustrating to see open tables and having to wait but we understood they might not have had enough waiters to cover all their tables. However after our 40 minute wait we were seated at a table that had been empty since we arrived. Once seated we hurriedly ordered the Italian salad and Porto Margarita Dip. Thankfully the food came quickly! Overall the food was good and our waiter was so nice! Just pack your patience if you're going during busy hours. read more

I really wanted to enjoy this place since the staff was pleasant, but the food was simply not good. We ordered the lobster and crab ravioli with spicy vodka sauce and shrimp scampi. The ravioli looked like something I'd whip up in my freshman-year dorm microwave after a night of drinking. Literally store-bought, frozen ravioli covered in a some thick concoction they called a vodka sauce. I give it a 1/10. Check out the picture, it looks terrible. The shrimp scampi was a bit better. Although the pasta was nearly drowning in a soup of butter and oil. Poor shrimp. They deserved better. For $18 an entree, go somewhere else. read more

I'd suggest this place for Takeout or a weekday lunch. Food was great! Im sad to say, their wait staff could not handle the high volume of patrons on a Saturday night in May. I'd hate to see this place in July! Hostess was very nice and quoted our wait time accurately (~25 min). We ordered power pasta and the appetizer trio. It was all very good. The calamari in the appetizer trio was a bit spicy. Our server was clearly overwhelmed, which unfortunately came across as very rude. She was made us feel rushed and neglected. Basic details such as drink refills, condiments, etc were forgotten. While we waited almost a half hour for soft drinks refills, we overheard her was making small talk with the table next to us. She said she was being trained, and the older woman training her "Brooke" wouldn't make eye contact with us any of the times she walked past our table, except when asking how we were splitting the bill. Kind of surprised by all of the negative reviews. Took a chance on this place - despite the reviews - while in Grand Haven because my kiddo wanted spaghetti. Very cheerful and polite (young) server. I like to go by the waitstaff's recommendations,so I had the Tortellini Porto, which is cheese stuffed with an Alfredo sauce and peas. I liked it a lot - good flavor and definitely filling. And, my kiddo (picky, picky, picky) loved her spaghetti. If you're looking for a 5 star, award-winning restaurant, this isn't it. I'm quite surprised by the terrible reviews. I'm starting to wonder if during the height of tourist season some of these places just can't keep up, thus the subpar experience. I had the vegetable lasagna, which came with bread and a house salad. The rolls were cute, and tasted fine. Definitely not fresh baked by the establishment but whatever. Bread is bread. The house salad had house dressing, which was very vinegary. Not my favorite, but it wasn't terrible. The lasagna was cooked well, and was very spongy. I like a spongy lasagna as opposed to a runny one. The service was okay. There was a big party at the same time we were dining, and the servers were running everywhere. Can't really blame them for being a tad slower. Overall, I'd eat here again. read more

Our waitress never checked on us to see how we were doing or bothered to check if we needed refills on drinks BUT she had plenty of time to check on the folks that arrived after us 5+ times. My daughter also accidentally dropped a glass plate & it shattered everywhere. We were told that someone would be by shortly to clean up the glass surrounding us. No one ever came & we ate our meal with glass under our feet for over an hour. We have had shitty service before but wow, never to this extent. We like sitting at the bar because it's easy and usually get quick decent service. We were informed after trying to order a salad prior to dinner that we couldn't!!! Wait what??? Why? Because the restaurant makes the bartenders prepare the salad the restaurant has decided to not allow a salad purchase whilst at the bar!!! Really management!!?? Now the good & bad...my Wife ordered the Feticcini Alfredo with Chicken and said it was some of the best she has ever had. Sadly, I ordered the Chicken Marsala and all I can say is it needs to be either updated to "edible status" or removed from the menu entirely. My wife and I had an early dinner here last Sunday. Nice atmosphere and a very nice waitress. We ordered the salad for two, which was good. We then ordered the 14" pizza. When it came, we eagerly bit into our first piece. What a disappointment! I've had better frozen pizzas. The crust seemed pre made from a factory. It was bland and had a gooey texture. The cheese had a sheen to it. The mushrooms tasted like they came from a can and the peppers had a squishy 'made from frozen' texture. Really disappointed with the food here.. As mentioned in previous reviews, I think most of the food was frozen.. The "homemade" meatballs didn't seem to be actually homemade.. And the marinara sauce was extremely watery. Most disappointing was the lobster and crab ravioli.. Definitely not worth $18. Our first time at Grand Haven, and Porto Bello was recommended by the Trolley driver. It was crowded and we waited about 15 minutes to get a seat which had been empty and cleaned when we first arrived. There was live jazz, which was kinda cool and the manager was good at remembering names and faces when taking reservations and seating guests. The food itself could have been much better. I tried the jumbo shrimp ravioli, a July 4 special. The portion size was small, about 8 small raviolis. I could hardly taste any shrimp in the filling, just cheese crumbles. The sauce was bland. My husband tried the chicken caviatore. The chicken was cooked dry, yet there was a surplus of marsala sauce on top, and a few strips of pasta at the bottom. Not filling at all and quite insipid.
