I have been to the Portrait Gallery Restaurant many times and have always enjoyed their food and drinks, because it was unique and tasty. There are not many tapas places around and their salads, small bites and flatbreads were wonderful. We usually ordered the "One of Everything" which was a great sampling of many menu items. With family in town for the first time from NYC, I was excited to bring them there. Unfortunately I went last night and their new menu was a bizarre mix of only tacos and burgers. While the service was wonderful as usual, I can get a taco or burger anywhere and am extremely disappointed. The three other tables around us said the same exact thing! I tried going to this restaurant a couple months ago but it was under renovations. They did a great job because the place looked lovely, even the bathrooms were super nice! I truly Had a great time at this place! I had the avocado toast and it was delicious, the peach mimosa and the waffles are to die for! ‼DO NOT COME HERE! YELP PICTURES/MENU ARE NOT ACCURATE!! THIS PLACE IS HORRIBLE‼ This place was my favorite restaurant to come to during my son's soccer practices last year. I haven't been in a few months and decided to try it again. I don't know if they got new owners or a new manager or something but it is a completely different restaurant! The food went from wonderful, creative small plates and delicious craft cocktails to (I assume based on taste and look) frozen tacos and burgers. The drinks are still extremely expensive for what they are, which was excused by their amazing food. Now customers are expected to buy a $16 drink to go with their horrible, greasy, and frozen $5 tacos. It is heartbreaking to watch such a loved place go downhill so fast. The ambience of the restaurant is still the same, great for a small plates restaurants but horrible for a Mexican (?and burger) restaurant. I also could not help but notice that the staff seems to have changed as well. I was used to seeing familiar, kind faces and am now met with clear unhappiness by the staff who I don't recognize. Who could blame them? I know I'm not the first person to leave a review like this so I assume they're all struggling too. It is just really sad what happened with this place. I will never be back. Save your money and go to either Moo and Brew or White Duck Taco- both are right beside this place but you will leave much happier. Such a waste! read more

A great find in the heart of downtown Matthews, The Portrait Gallery brings elegance. My wife and I walked by and decided to stop in and the place was dead, to our pleasure. It was close to closing during and odd day of the week because we have never been so lucky. We ordered an array of wines and small plates and had a grand time. Everything was great to include the service. We were given the two cents tour and were both surprised by how large this place actually is. A winding path to the back takes you to a courtyard that is perfect for those cooler outdoor kind of evenings. read more

Loved this little bar around the corner from my best friends salon. Although every time we went in the past they were closed. Great drinks! Checked in and showed her my check in to get the discount. She said she had me covered but didn't give me the discount. I didn't realize it until after I left. Lesson learned check your bill! Everything was amazing. We had a group of 6 on Thursday night at 6.30pm. Seated immediately and had the room in the back next to chef. We ordered the $175-one of everything for 4 people. Thank goodness we had 6 people. Lots of yummy food. All small plates to share. The Oysters Rockefeller were the best I have ever had. We ended up getting extra orders of them. The chef told us it was his grandmother´s cine. My other favorite was the tuna and I normally don't even like tuna. The salmon was also great. My husband's favorite were the Brussels sprouts. We also had yummy fried chicken sliders, flatbreads with so much stuff on top. My friend also ordered meatballs which he said were great also. They even had a magician doing card tricks. I highly recommend it for small groups who want to try a lot of different small plates.Be sue and make reservations though, because not that much seating. read more

The portrait gallery is simply fantastic. Service is great and food is even better. I've only been once, but it won't be the last time. A group and I decided on the "try the whole menu" deal. We were able to try all the meat and side dishes. I think it was around 16-20 dishes in total for our group of 4. We were all stuffed. Everything was tasty and was the perfect balance of creative and comforting. My personal favorites were the fettuccine, the mushrooms, the pork tenderloin, and the sirloin. OMG! If I could give this place 6 stars, I would. From the moment we walked in knew we were in for a treat. We came on a Friday night around 7 and was sat right away. We were very lucky to get a seat on the patio. I can't say how lucky we were to sit out here (the weather is finally decent to sit outside). All I can say is the service was excellent, as was the food. We tried 6 or 7 different things and everything was delicious. I loved how they had a fall drink menu as well. The owner, who stopped by our table described how he came up with the drink menu the prior weekend. I love a place where the owner is on site and interacts with the customers. His daughter was our waitress and could not have been better. There is something about a family owned and operated restaurant that makes it more special to me. We got a babysitter for our wedding anniversary and we were excited to finally try the beloved PG. We were anticipating an exceptional meal and experience from what I had heard so many rave reviews over. In a total flip of the script, there were 4 burgers, 4 tacos and some salads on the menu. Totally blindsided....You can get that in every other restaurant in downtown Matthews!! Omg, what are you doing PG!? The only reason I can fathom for such a downgrade is trying to cut costs but there have got to be other routes. I hate writing a bad review and piling on to the other bad reviews here, but I hope the feedback will help them to realize this "rebrand" is a huge mistake! This was such a cute little surprise in downtown Matthews! I went here for dinner on a Wednesday night and was happy to see that this place was full of people. The inside was pretty loud but very charming looking. There are portraits on the ceiling and a big beautiful bar. We asked to sit outside and we were seated immediately. Everything is tapas style and the portions felt pretty decent. My favorite things we ordered were the vegetarian options--they were much more filling and a better price point. We loved the fingerling potatoes and the squid ink rice balls. The pork tenderloin we ordered was good, it was just a minuscule portion. I didn't care for the lamb crepe (not a lot of meat and bitter) or the potato stuffed baked Brie (just a weird combo). We loved the drink options! All of their signature cocktails were creative and delicious. Persistence (Dali) was soooooo delicious. We got a wine flight too and were impressed how nice the pours were. The drinks she made were not consistent and when we mentioned this to Christine, she looked annoyed when we addressed this issue and avoided our request for another drink. I have been here twice and LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this place. The food is fantastic and it is plated like a work of art! I haven't had anything I didn't like. The chef makes everything with such care and you can tell just by how the food is made and created on the plate he loves what he does. I've read some of the other reviews and hate that people are complaining about the portions. Clearly, they have never been to Europe because these are typically European small plate portions. I have never left Portrait Gallery hungry. And my husband, who is an eater was full after us trying 3 plates. I don't think the prices are that bad. You are paying for farm to table, and beautifully crafted plates that you can't have anywhere else. I will continue to recommend this restaurant to EVERYONE. Oh and the service is FABULOUS! My wife and I went there last night on a whim and it was an awesome dining experience. The atmosphere, service, chefs, cuisine, and management(owner) were all fabulous!!! We are excited to go back for Sunday brunch as it was highly recommended. I just cannot say enough about how wonderfully accommodating and hospitable the staff was!!! We also took a "walk about" in the back area and can't wait for better weather so we can try out the beautiful patio! The only suggestion I would make (and it is trivial) would be to have a few low table seating options in the bar area for those couples who want a little more of an intimate dining experience within the bar atmosphere. There are some in the back, but it didn't appear as inviting an atmosphere as the bar area, but appropriate for a more quiet dining experience (maybe less chatter?).
