What an absolute joke of a store. They have a sizeable, overpriced French section, that the staff knows absolutely nothing about. I was looking for Gamay and the clerk told me to look in the whites. They didn't know beaujolais, burgundy, or gigondas. I gave up. I'm sure the people going in for nips have no problem though. FYI: everything here is $2-$5 over other retail stores in the area. I've been coming to this store for a while and I don't typically write reviews but I really enjoy the staff here, and wanted to commend them on not only their great product knowledge but their dedication to customer safety and their overall friendliness and though I personally drink wine and don't know much of anything about craft beer, I have a ton of friends who enjoy it and it's wonderful to have an employee like Justin there to help make the job of picking out great stuff from the vast selection offered an easy and fun experience. I will always choose Portside because of the great customer service which is even more impressive due to the current COVID crisis. read more

I haven't done an exhaustive search, but there are only 4 stores in this part of the Cape that stock less common wines, and who have employees that can talk about wines in a reasonably knowledgable way. This is one of the 4...but I should hasten to add that some employees are REALLY knowledgable (John, Mack), but there are also some folks who know close to nothing about wine. There wine selection was quite poor mid-pandemic, but seems to be recovering now. They have a great selection of small brewery and local brew offerings. Their prices aren't the best, but some of the posts exaggerate this issue: when I looked at the VERY PRICEY Pappy Van Winkle, it seemed to be the price that that particular year was commanding (though ridiculously high, in my opinion). Yes, you can get a bottle of widely available spirits for a bit less (I am thinking specifically of Knob Creek bourbon, which is priced about 10% higher here, and sometimes other stores put it on sale, which makes the Portside price rather unappealing), if you don't mind driving a few extra miles. But the reasons for seeking out this store relate to the wines and beers that they have available, and more unusual spirits that you can find here (like Pappy Van Winkle). So it really depends upon what you want, and if you are specifically looking for wine, whether you happen to go in when one of their wine experts is available. read more

The only reason I am giving this store even one star is because it was clean. I was in here looking for bourbon, and I am very familiar with bourbon prices and what acceptable prices for "rare"/"allocated" Bourbons are sold for. This store has a $70 bottle of lot b pappy Van Winkle, which secondary market acceptable would have been between $400-$500, he has it on the shelf for $1200!!! GTFO, that's absolutely Ludacris! That's enough for me to know that this guy either plans to never sell this bottle (and others that were even more ridiculous) or he has no clue what he's doing. Selection: decent, but not great, particularly poor selection on the middle-lower price range (i.e. difficult to get a decent wine at that store below $18-$20). Service: inexistant and unfriendly. They do not care about any customer walking into their store, at the most you may be greeted with a nasty look from the old guy behind the counter. Don't bother to ask a question about their wines, they just don't know. Perhaps they their beers or other alcohols... Bottom line, there are many other liquor stores in the area and I rather drive to Chatham or Orleans to do my shopping. I've got to say, Harwich East is a great liquore store if you're looking for wines at reasonable prices. They carry a wide variety, and the staff are super-knowledgable and helped me select two botled of red in a matter of minutes. Both were under $12, and both were excellent. Seriously. Years ago, they steered me towards my now most favorite wine ever, which is a Nero d'Avola. At the time, it, too went for about $12 a bottle and has since gotten up to nearly $20 per bottle. Harwich East's taster and owner make it a priority to select wines that are not only delicious and of great quality, but of a certain price point. The bottles I went home with could have easily passed for $20 - $30 bottles, but because they're from lesser-known vineyards, they're able to keep the price down. I like this a lot. They also offer 20% off a case of wine, have a huge spirits selection and a decent offering of beers. They fact that it's across the street from the market and up the road from CVS and has a huge parking lot, to boot makes this one of my favorite places to buy my booze on the lower cape. read more

Yes it's a liquor store, but the very first time I walked in, I noticed a nice selection of wine that was really good. Some fabulous inexpensive Italians that I was looking for and some local stuff that fascinated me (wineries in Cape Cod? Really?) They were also having a wine tasting coming up (with a Cape Cod seafood twist) which I really thought was a fun idea to liven up the winter. Add that to the tastings they do daily (they have some tasting pour machines set up) and not just for wine! Well, I was sold. I found #johnthewineguy to be very helpful. Pointed me in the right direction for a couple of really great bottles, both in the $10-13 range, which was right on the money - no pun intended ;) It really is all about the people. If I could submit a 0 star review, I would. Will not be returning to Portside Liquors ever again. I've been here before and have never had a problem until the other day. The prices are extremely high to begin with compared to others in the area, but in my last visit, I was denied the right to buy alcohol for the first time in my life. I'm 22 years old and and have an in-state Massachusetts ID. The older women came around the corner as I was checking out with my purchases and scorned at myself, a friend, and my little brother, that I was not allowed to buy alcohol because my younger brother was not of age. I had previously explained that he was not 21, which was quite obvious, and I kindly asked what the reason was behind why I, a 22 year old, was denied. The younger men behind the counter were understanding and kind, but this one women was extremely rude and unwelcoming. I felt discriminated against as a younger customer, because if an older man came in with his younger son that was under the age of 21, there would have not been an issue at all. This is my first yelp review and it's unfortunate that such a negative experience caused me to want to post a review so poor. I've heard other negative stories about this place, so be aware! Drive the extra couple miles to the next liquor store and save some money on the cheaper prices! read more

People may like the wine which gets better with age, but if you want good beer don't bother. The help there obviously doesn't know how to rotate the stock. I have purchased beer there twice without checking the born on date and it was old and nasty. Will never buy beer there again. Two 12's are $22.50. with dep. We are not stupid.!! They would not make up the difference. To us, Where is the Loyalty.? When you support a local Business. Faithfully.!! I think they may have new owners that don't know how to run a Business.!! DONE.!! Bubba & Crew were Great.!! We will go the same distance to Shop Ahoy.!!
