I will not stay or eat lunch/dinner at Post Ranch. I guess new owners took over. It is a different place. I made reservations at Sierra Mar for lunch and arrived 40 minutes early. The guard would not let me in. I told him I understand the restaurant wasn't open until twelve and would wait in the parking lot. I had him contact his supervisor. He still wouldn't let me in. He had me park outside, before the kiosk, and wait in the hot sun. I have not been treated this bad in years. Talk about discrimination. They really don't want non residing guests eating at their restaurant. I guess they want to keep this place "exclusive". At this rate they will meet their exclusivity goal and have no customers. I have stayed at Post Ranch in the past and loved it. read more

It's really a shame that it took me over a year to write a review about probably my favorite place on Earth, but better late than never. We stayed here the day after getting engaged, so it was a celebration trip. Due to the price (it's a splurge- way over our budget at +1K for just a night), we only had the ability to stay for 24 hours, but was truly something we will never forget and we joke "it's all downhill from there" (because no hotel stay will ever compare). They welcome you with champagne when you check-in. We stayed at the Roberts suite, top floor and with a perfect linear view to the ocean (you can't see the suite below/next to you) so it feels completely private. 1,400 feet above the ground, the view is unbelievable- ocean during the day, a Californian sunset around night, and we woke up to clouds in the morning. They give you binoculars for whale watching from your balcony. We ordered room service while viewing the sunset / whales from our balcony, and got massages in our room too. Star gazing was pretty cool- we saw the moon and Mars through their crazy telescopes. The pool is a bit of a hike; try to get a ride from the staff there. The hot tubs are absurdly hot, but it's an infinity hot tub, and no one goes into one of those without taking a kickass picture of you on top of the world. Wear your slippers and even your robes around the resort; gives it a homey comfy feel. If I'm not mistaken, there's only 20-30 rooms throughout this entire campus, so no matter when you go to the pool or hot tubs etc, the chances of not being surrounded by others are pretty high. Service is very subtle, since they leave you alone for the most part to give privacy. I'm already looking forward to hopefully staying here for a wedding anniversary sometime, and we aren't even married yet!! read more

Post Ranch Inn is THE place to stay in Big Sur. Designed by famed local architect Mickey Muennig, the luxury resort is placed high up on a cliff, overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The extensive property is stunning, equipped with a library, two heated infinity pools, fine dining restaurant, hiking trails, and even its own fire station. Guests must be over the age of 18, ensuring a peaceful, romantic escape from reality. The rooms are free standing structures with private entrances, making it an optimal accommodation during a pandemic. Upon arrival, we were warmly greeted by masked staff, who valet parked our car, and escorted us and our luggage to our room, in a brand new Lexus. Our room awaited our arrival with a personalized note, two complimentary bottles of wine, and fully stocked complimentary mini bar. Hand sanitizer and spray bottles of alcohol were also provided. I made our October reservation three months in advance, and was able to snag the last available Upper Coast Full Ocean View Room ($1850 per night pre-tax). I highly recommend this room, as it offers a panoramic view, unobscured by trees. The Big Sur fog coats the ocean, making it feel as though you are above the clouds. We spent a lot of time on our room's spacious balcony, where we spotted deer, birds, and even wild turkeys. The in-room breakfast and room service were both very average, but given that the area is somewhat of a food desert, we were not bothered. Amazingly special place, worth the price tag! We will be back! the rooms have very comfy beds + sonos and an ipad for easy listening to whatever you chose. The mini bar was fully complementary and very above average. It included an assortment of local cheeses that we called to have restocked it was so good! What really makes the stay is the staff. Everyone we interacted with was so nice and so helpful. Chris the gardener was great, do the chef's garden tour! Also the forest meditation was fantastic! read more

4.5 stars for Post Ranch Inn! I recently stayed at Post Ranch Inn for 2 nights and I had a wonderful experience. I'll start with the service - it was top notch. Check-in and check-out were easy and my interactions with staff throughout my stay were enjoyable. If I had to describe the workers at Post Ranch Inn, the word 'attentive' comes to mind. In addition to an incredible staff, the property at Post Ranch is unbeatable. With many of the amenities/site destinations (rooms, hot tubs, Sierra Mar, etc) lining the coast - you get great views during your stay. Pro-tip: if you're staying on a clear night, head to the Meditation Pool for an incredible star gaze. Off the coast, there are also great walking paths, an edible garden, a gallery and a beautiful (and heated!) pool. While I spent most of my stay on the coast, I did walk through the rest of the property once and it was beautiful. Regarding the food at Post Ranch - I wrote a separate review of Sierra Mar. There were some hits and some misses and overall the food was the most disappointing aspect of my stay. And finally, my favorite thing about Post Ranch Inn: the houses/rooms! They. Are. Amazing. I stayed in the Ocean House - Southern (an upgrade upon arrival) and it was bliss. The patio views were breathtaking and I loved how the views were incorporated so functionally into the room design/layout. The room and views were perfect during the day and even better at night. Heated floors, Sonos speakers, a deep tub (with windows that open to the deck) and a wood-burning fireplace made for incredibly cozy nights. The room was a solid 10/10 for me and I will definitely recommend the Ocean Homes to friends in the future! Ultimately, my time at Post Ranch Inn was nearly perfect! There were a few small things but the property views, the Ocean House and the friendly staff made for a truly special trip that I won't be forgetting anytime soon. read more

The big 600th review! For my 15th wedding anniversary last year, we splurged on a 3 day/2 night vacation at Post Ranch Inn while on a week long trip along the coast. I specifically saved the stay here for the midway point of that vacation, since it's such a peaceful (surreal) retreat. The rooms aren't really rooms, but small villas/homes instead. I think I pinched myself every other minute just making sure this was real life. After driving in from Santa Barbara taking many picturesque, yet treacherous roads (with some serious drops), we drove up to the welcome house. Drive slowly or you will miss the sign. There we checked in and got the scoop on the details of our stay. They knew who we were by name and were expecting us. Someone from staff then drove us around the property for a small tour and ultimately, to our very own private house. Our luggage was delivered a short while later. Snacks and drinks stocked in our fridge were included during our stay. Waiting for us, was also a basket with a personalized note, some bubbly, wine and fresh fruit. Perfect. Obviously, the main attraction to this resort is the location. BREATHTAKING VIEWS. This isn't the type of resort you use just to sleep because you are to busy exploring a city. You come here to STAY here: to enjoy your house, use the grounds, and sit on your balcony taking in the fresh air and pacific views. Did I mention the beautiful sunset? At night, we slept with the window open just a little bit and that was our natural a/c. We even used the fireplace for the first time (South Floridians aren't used to that...ha!). Our house, Pfeiffer, had a view to the ocean from every angle, including the bathroom. Nearby, we had the iconic hot tub with views for days. Yet another "pinch me" moment every time we used it. After lunch or sometimes before breakfast, we jogged through the lush forrest. They have several trail options based on your fitness level. Birds, rabbits, deer, and wild (loud) turkeys were everywhere. We didn't use the gym, but they do have one available. We also did not do any of the spa services. If I'm ever lucky to return, that will be at the top of my list. The spa menu offers some interesting services and rituals. Sierra Mar was the only thing that was not up to par with the rest of the resort. Don't get me wrong, the restaurant was good enough, I suppose. I just expected to be equally blown away, but I was not. Breakfast was also underwhelming. The actual restaurant though, wow, sitting atop a cliff with floor to ceiling glass felt like I was dining on a cloud. Since our goal was to stay at the resort as much as possible, we didn't drive around the area much. When we decided to venture out, we used the resort's driving service. They took us to and from any nearby additional lunch/dinner place. We just called ahead. If you are looking for a once in a lifetime trip, bucket list spot, or just a special occasion location where luxury, views, service, and privacy are priority...THIS IS IT! read more

Heavenly! We went for my 40th birthday and this place is incredible! Excellent place to go for a weekend away from kids to be in a peaceful place. From the views to the rooms to the restaurant. We did the pre fixe menu one night and the chef was amazing! The pools are never busy and this place is incredible for sunrise and sunset. The property to my surprise was huge and could do lots of hiking just within the property. Great gym and three pools to chose from. Will definitely be back soon. read more

We've been to some wonderful resorts all over the world and I must say that this is one of thee best we've ever visited. We were greeted by Jose who was the concierge and was so welcoming and friendly. The woman working the front desk was wonderful too. They popped a bottle of Champagne just for us and sent us on our way. Our room was the W.B. Post, located on a cliff with the most beautiful view. I've attached some pictures we captured while on our deck. Room was clean, cozy and FULL of amazing snacks, treats and drinks. Cookies are of the hook! The next morning we ordered breakfast in and that was amazing. They did forget our silverware, but not that big of a deal. During the day we laid out at the infinitely pool and ordered drinks and lunch. If you like tropical alcoholic beverages, order the "Golden Pineapple", it comes in a copper cup and metal straws! It's really cool! I've also added a picture of that. The burger was great, chips and salsa were tasty and the shrimp cocktail along with the cocktail sauce were perfect! We had dinner at Sierra Mar restaurant and it was amazing. Service was great, restaurant was clean and very upscale. Views were to die for!! This morning we woke up and ordered breakfast. Food was great, but our order was completely wrong and doubled up so we had a ton of wasted food. Generally speaking service was good, not great. I feel a slight disconnect with some of them but nothing catastrophic. Shout out to the concierge, Jose, and the outstanding customer service he provided along with the woman at the front desk. This place is totally magical. The property is beautiful especially in November when it's a bit stormy. The ocean view room we were in was amazing (of course) and I highly recommend getting a massage at the spa. But the restaurant Sierra Del Mar took things to the next level. They insisted we tell them of any food allergies ahead of our stay and they made us a custom menu every night so we could eat freely. This was hands down the best food I've ever experienced. There are no TVs in the rooms for a very good reason. It's all about disconnecting with the world and staying connected with your partner. Lucky for me I married my best friend. They were EXTREMELY wonderful about my gluten free needs and it was literally the best gluten free bread I have ever eaten in my life. This is our dream living place! We came here during the Thanks Giving holidays. Our suite is large with a private balcony and jacuzzi. We watched the shooting stars at night laying on the beach chairs on the balcony, it was amazing... Dinner at Sierra Mar was exceptional - staff was attentive, food paired well with the wine, everything was local and fresh... There is a small but well decorated library full of books and a nice Chess board, we played a game with nice classical music in the background. The surrounding area is very natural, with many deers, turkeys (Thanks Giving survivors) and birds. We also did light hikes around the ranch and enjoyed very much their infinity pools looking out the ocean. For our well-being, we had an hour of full body Swedish massage, and a yoga class on site which were great :-) This is our "zero-th honeymoon", and we plan to come back for the "first honeymoon" next year, and many more years... They have a price fixe menu. We opted for Lunch vs dinner in order to take advantage the view on the balcony outside. However if you choose to dine for dinner or weather does not permit sitting outside dining inside is fine. They have floor to ceiling windows and oceans views inside. You come for the views. 1000 ft up from the ocean and in the bluffs. Unlike Rocky Point restaurant you cant wander around the beautiful property. You eat and you leave. Tried Course one Monterey Squid with charred avocado - Squid and Sardines are local to Monterey. Opt for the squid if it is on the menu. Wonderfully prepared, with layers of flavor and color. This dish is what Staplehouse in Atlanta, GA is trying to be. Battered Beans and Deviled Eggs - Deconstructed. I don't like Deviled eggs and I would order this dish. Course two Steak Fritas - Good and cooked as requeted - Medium. But I have had better. Probably wouldn't order again Mt Lassen Trout - Cooked perfectly. Colorful Cauliflower florets take on the flavors of leek and prawns. The cognac balances out the flavorful providing an unexpected richness. Course three Schoch family Farm Cheese - Served on toasties with pear. Did the job. Chocolate Bread Pudding - Favorite. Moist, Rich and Light. Feels like an air pillow in your mouth. Unexpected. Beautiful scenery and delicious food. It was crowded but accommodating with enough parking and things to do while you waited for a table. We sat outside, not sure there was a bad seat in the restaurant. The staff was friendly, the decor local and trendy. We had a local Pinot Noir from Lucia that was their house for 20 years and oh so delish. We paired with artisan cheese, jams etc.. Their clam chowder was the best yet on our tour, not too thick, clams done right, and a hint of herbs at the end of each bite. Salads were fresh with beets and other veggies. We went down to the gift shop afterwards and loved the local art. Bought some things to end a wonderful treat and stop along our way to Monterey. read more

Very cool architecture. The hotel really isn't a hotel in the traditional sense - instead of a room you get your own whimsical mini-house. Service is great, as you'd expect in a 5 star establishment and there are some unique touches. As you arrive at the gate, they check you in and radio ahead so that the reception desk is fully prepared and can greet you by name. The staff is helpful and friendly, but not to the point where you become uncomfortable and the mini-bar is fully stocked with food and non-alcoholic items, gratis. Although I'm sure the views from this 1400 ft above-sea-level perch are typically spectacular, we were stuck in a thick cloud for our entire stay. It would have been nice if the hotel did something special for us (granted it's not their fault), but no such luck. read more

The Post Ranch Inn is RIDIC. Hands down the most awesome place I've ever stayed, like a 5-star woodlands resort. Shit here is perfect and they really go all out! The staff and service is amazing. Also, they don't half-ass the amenities. I was marveling at all the snacks they include in your room (I even took a pic). Our mini fridge literally had all the following items: -pita chips -hummus -trail mix -dried fruit mix -biscotti -potato chips (sea salt and salt and pepper) -white wine -bottled water (6) -sparkling water (2) -apple juice (2) -pear juice (2) -coconut water (2) -honest tea (2) -milk (2) -root beer (2) -diet coke (2) -bottled coke (2) -goat cheese -chocolates Non-fridge items included: -chocolate chip cookies that were really good -champagne -red wine -bananas and apples -more things I've forgotten Anyway, so other than the free food (not actually free, just included with your exorbitant hotel bill haha), our room was awesome. We stayed in the Pfeiffer Room, which is on the upper level of one of the Coast houses. We had our own private balcony overlooking the ocean and nobody stayed in the room below us while we were there. The room is small but wonderfully cozy, with a bed, couch, and fireplace (no TV) in the main area along with sliding doors out onto the private deck. We watched the sunset from the deck while we had champagne and it was so freaking romantic. A short walk away from our room was the infinity hot tub. The regular pool is a bit further but not too far. You can call the concierge and ask for a ride in one of their Post Ranch Lexuses if you don't want to walk. Don't forget to go by the bird's nest for an obligatory pic. As far as activities go, I would recommend going on one of the trails. They aren't too difficult and it was wonderful to walk around in the forest and be out in the fresh air. Note: there are critters and deer EVERYWHERE. Turkeys, too. Be respectful! Breakfast at Sierra Mar was included in our stay. The food is not amazing, just a fancy-ish breakfast buffet, but you get that awesome view. The room service was pretty decent too. We just ordered sandwiches and dessert. The rooms here book up really, REALLY far in advance so plan accordingly if you want to stay at the Post Ranch. It's also expensive AF, like seriously $$$$$, but I gotta tell you it was totally worth it! read more

The hubby and I splurged on a 3 day mid-week getaway here, we didn't want to leave!! Yes, at first glance the Post Ranch Inn is expensive (the rooms vary from around $1,000-$3000) per night. However, this particular resort tucked away among the mountains and the ocean in Big Sur is always on one "Top 10" list or another for a reason; it is so gorgeous here! Rooms: 5 stars: We went for a treehouse the first night (how can you not??) And an Ocean House the next night. We got lucky with the treehouse, they put us in the Borona treehouse with an excellent view of the ocean from the window on one side, and a forest view on the other side. The room is very rustic but chic, I mean what other tree house comes with heated bathroom floors? :P The windows are situated very nicely and you can see the stars come out at night; magical :) The Ocean House is definitely a must-stay, especially if you luck out and get gorgeous weather! The weather on our second day had a heavy marine layer and thick fog, which was haunting and beautiful too, but on the first and third day the sun came out and the gorgeous ocean was literally right outside our deck. This room is bigger then the tree house, and very private. Each room comes with a stocked mini bar with all the drinks you could want (wine and beer included) and a variety of snacks, this is complimentary for the guests and gets refilled daily. They also provide a good stock of wood for their fireplaces, and the decor is very charming and rustic. Service: 5 stars: I read that some of the staff can be rude and condescending, but we didn't feel that was the case at all! Everyone from the guy at the security gate, to the bellman, were so friendly. Since they only have 39 rooms here, they usually know you by name, and the service throughout was prompt, courteous and what you'd expect from a 5 star resort like this. Food: 5 stars (note: we only got room service from Sierra Mar) Post Ranch has its own on-site restaurant called Sierra Mar and they provide a complimentary breakfast for their guests each morning. The breakfast is buffet style and very delicious, with a huge range of savory and sweet to satisfy any palette. They also have to-go coffee and tea cups readily available which was a nice touch, plus you cannot beat the view at Sierra Mar! We also ordered lunch and dinner from Sierra Mar to have in our rooms because we literally didn't want to leave lol. The sandwiches (turkey and burger) were good, they can also pack it for a picnic, but I highly recommend their Ranch dinners. The portion is for 2 people and includes bread, salad, main entree and dessert (price range is around $150) we got the ribs and it was sooo tender and delicious. They also have their own on-site organic garden where the chef gets his greens. Tip: *They have 2 on-site open top Lexus Convertibles if you want to take it around Big Sur for a spin *TRIPLE check the weather before you come if you are going to be disappointed with the marine layer. Post Ranch is very highly elevated above sea level, so most mornings start out super foggy and it clears by 1PM, however, there are days where the marine layer never leaves and you don't get an ocean view at all. *The Jade Pool by Sierra Mar has an amazing view, it's a hot tub at around 110 degrees and is so relaxing *You can order a picnic lunch to go from Sierra Mar if you want to go enjoy your food during the hikes around the property, or on the beach. *The Borona treehouse is their best treehouse :) read more

I get the sense that we missed the window of greatness in this place. It is stunning and extremely expensive. It has all of the perks of places like this we have stayed at around the world--beautiful rooms, perfect location, tons of free food and non-alcoholic drinks, food from the restaurant is incredible, so many healthy options and beautiful fresh produce. I have a life-threatening food allergy, which I felt was addressed and taken seriously. I also had an incredible massage in the spa with a gifted practitioner. Yet, there was something a bit off. When we checked in we were asked about opt-in tipping, which we agreed to. Seemed reasonable to make sure that all of the staff got money without having to tip every time someone brought room service (though they charge a massive service fee) cleaned our room or when someone drove us to places around the property (which is huge and hilly and I should mention this place seems to be limited in terms of ADA sensitivity). I'm not sure the staff are aware of the opt-in tipping as some of them seemed resentful if we did not give them money. For example, one staff person made a comment about how much he "loved" driving people around the property, but he sounded sarcastic to us. That said, others seems very chill. Also, we got one of the more expensive rooms near the water on the West side and we had NO working AC. For a lot of people, they sleep better in cool rooms, but this is especially true if you are a woman of a certain age. When I asked for a fan, I was told if they were not sure they had any left. I complained and got a fan, but I felt bad for having to do so. I guess I just feel like for the price they need better HVAC systems, or at least not to make a big deal out of me asking for a fan. And overall, the staff just seemed spent and there was a sense that the manager and some others felt like we should be grateful to be there, like it's the best place ever. And we were grateful, but it's not the best place ever. In terms of the facilities, they are very rustic in a literal rusted sense. That said, when the fog is not in (which was only a couple of hours during our stay and yet somehow still so hot; it was 90 degrees one day) you do feel like you are in a kind of heaven as you are above the cloud line. I do wonder if this is just one of those places living on reputation and somewhere along the way forgot about how to really treat both guests and staff. read more

And I told the staff that I was going to POP the big Question to my love of my life! They went way out of their way to help me set this all up for over a month and half they were calling me a couple of times and the even UPGRADED my Treehouse to an Amazingly Ocean view room "F. Post 121"! The staff is on point and helpful and friendly! When I pop the question on our private bench in front of the cottage over looking the mountain side to the ocean I could not of help shutting one tear on how special moment in my life is! O-M-G, this is the closest place to Heaven on earth. Someone else said magic but it's BEYOND magic. It's been 4 years since we were here (to celebrate a birthday that ended in "0" for my husband) but the impression that weekend left on my being will stay with me FOREVER. OK, OK, that's so Santa Cruzie but the Post Ranch Inn is all about the environment: Big Sur, the Ventana Wilderness, the Pacific Ocean and sharing it all with someone very special. When you drive up to the front entrance, there's a staff person stationed (guarding?) at the entrance to greet you and to make sure you really are a guest of the Inn. No one except registered guests are allowed on the grounds, exceptions are made for the restaurant however. When you drive up to the main house to check in, you leave your car and keys out front; make sure to say bye-bye because you won't see them again until you check-out. While checking in, help yourself to glasses of wine and champagne, and with wine glass in hand, step outside and enter your chauffer-driven Lexus (drinking while being driven is legal here). It's a very short drive to your treehouse (or wherever). Our driver even pointed out a juvenile condor in a tree above us along on our drive to our room. Your luggage is taken in, he explains about your accommodations, turns on your satellite radio, asks if you have any questions and quietly leaves. No TV, no Internet, no alarm clocks, no phone - not even cell phones so leave that Blackberry in the trunk of the car. And don't even THINK about bringing a laptop! Japanese soaking tub in the bathroom, a well-stocked pantry of goodies (included), comfy feather beds and comforters, fluffy pillows, a fireplace with a stash of firewood - replenished daily- and just the sound of the wind blowing through the trees and the crashing waves of the ocean below. Nothing fancy or frilly, truly rustic, Big Sur-style. Meals at the Sierra Mar are indescribable and every seat is an ocean view. The tables are cleverly angled so that you don't really see anyone sitting next to you, only the face of the person you're with in front of you. If you do sit right at the window, it's awesome to think that only a double plate of glass separates you from the cliffs directly below. Breakfast is served on the outside patio to guests only. It's a short walk to the restaurant from any room and, yes, you can even call the Lexus to pick you up and take you back. There's a perfect temperature infinity edge basking pool, lots of hiking trails, one that leads to a huge outdoor swimming pool out in the middle of the forest. There's also a yurt where you can take yoga classes, get a massage (in room massages can also be requested) or meditate (or learn to). But don't worry, if you get too tired to hike back, just go on over to the gift shop/garden area and ask them to call the Lexus, someone will drive out to pick you up and deliver you to your door step. It's really doesn't get any better than the Post Ranch Inn and I wouldn't lie about that! read more

Love this place. Just two nights this time unfortunately. Our room was perfect - quiet, isolated, great view of the ocean. Service is the best - ask for something and they are there in minutes. So many great spots to hike within just a few miles. Warming pools are awesome. Both breakfast and dinner outstanding. We have traveled to a lot of places - Post Ranch is still at the top of our list. Only critique is that the restaurant was just a little off its old game. New chef, maybe just growing pains. Food was very good but not wow and the menu was the same both nights we were there (they used to change the menu nightly). Service outstanding though. read more

Is it really expensive? Yes. It is worth every single penny? Absolutely. I have never been to a place with more breathtaking views and friendly staff in my entire life. Holy cow, I mean they literally dance around you like you're a celebrity, it's insane. The two gentlemen at the front counter gave us an upgraded room simply because we arrived early and our reserved room wasn't ready. Now THAT'S service. I don't even know where to begin.. My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our 3 day getaway. However, 2 nights and 3 days were not enough! But we are definitely lucky to have had at least that much time here at this amazing property on the coast of California! We both grew up in California and often found ourselves traveling out of the state to fly to "paradise", but Post Ranch Inn is definitely paradise and then some. From the very moment you enter the property, you are treated like royalty. The staff does everything for you, from driving you around to making your bed every time you mess it up (and very discretely). I enjoyed everything about our stay. We even planned to hike around Big Sur, but after arriving to Post Ranch Inn we realized that was not necessary. We just stayed on the property and walked a bit of Bill's Trail. The one and only thing I did not enjoy about my stay was my massage. Only because my masseuse's breath smelt like cigarettes. :( that was the only unpleasant thing about my stay. Other than that, we plan to book more stays at Post Ranch Inn anytime our schedules allow (oh and our pockets - as it is a very pretty penny, but rightfully so). read more

What an amazing meal and view. We asked the waiter if we could do the 6 course tasting vs the normal four course and was SO HAPPY about it. All the four course "tastings" were full size meals. They were crazy big. The six course was much more aligned with the tasting menus we've had before. Post Ranch Inn is the most magical place I've ever stayed. My husband and I were married in one of their Ocean Houses in May 2018, and every moment of our three night stay was absolutely perfect. Every member of the staff went above and beyond to make sure that we were well taken care of, but we have to give special shout out to Shane, the resort manager, for helping us to craft the most unforgettable trip. Our Ocean House was beautifully decorated, clean, and fully stocked with various drinks, cheeses, hummus, etc. The Ocean Houses are spaced out enough that you can enjoy the outdoor space with complete seclusion and without any noise from your neighbors. The pictures simply do not do this place justice. Our mornings always began with complimentary breakfast at Sierra Mar, which is a can't miss. We spent our evenings on our outdoor patio taking in the spectacular view and stars, drinking wine, and listening to music on the in-room speakers. Sierra Mar offers a room service menu that's lower price and just as delicious as their prix fixe menu. One evening we also went across the road to Ventana for dinner, and Shane was kind enough to drive us there personally at the drop of a hat. As for the wedding: We had a tiny wedding with 8 guests. Living in NYC and planning a destination wedding felt a little daunting at first, but their elopement/wedding packages ensure that everything is as seamless as possible. The marriage commissioner came directly to our room the morning of, and we signed the paperwork on our patio. My dress needed to be steamed, and with one phone call to the front desk, someone picked up my dress within minutes and returned it in beautiful condition. My guests were all escorted to our room by the staff in their fleet of Lexuses. The day itself was slightly foggy below the cliff line, which simply meant that rather than looking over our patio to the ocean, it instead appeared as if we were perched over the clouds. After the ceremony we took pictures with Doug Despres (one of Post Ranch's recommended photographers, who is AMAZING by the way) around the grounds with no shortage of beautiful locations. And for dinner, our family had a table overlooking the clouds at sunset at Sierra Mar. The restaurant was kind enough to even offer alternate appetizer choices from their room service menu at no additional cost, since one member of our party had dietary restrictions. The cake was phenomenal and covered with flowers that were hand picked from the grounds. After dating for 10 years, our wedding day was perfect, intimate, and everything that we wanted. Seriously the most stressful moment was when I realized that I forgot an eye shadow at home, and for an 8 person wedding... who cares? We wouldn't have changed a thing. Highly recommend stopping in to Post Ranch Inn for lunch or late afternoon/sunset drinks and apps on the deck (only if a clear day). Not a kid-friendly spot, I believe 18+ only (Nepenthe just south of PRI is a great choice with kids). The PRI lunch menu is multi course fixed price, however you can order a la carte on the deck, which is where you want to be on a beautiful day! We asked if they had a cheese plate and they put one together even though it was not on the menu. We also had the trout a la carte ($27) Amazingly beers are more reasonably priced than our local pub at home, only $6, wines by the class start around $15 and up, same for cocktails. Unfortunately I cannot review the lodging. Room rates 'start' at ~$950 (up to $2250) per night includes breakfast and a well stocked (comped) mini bar. A stay at PRI is on my bucket list! Logistics: As you head south on Highway One, watch for entrance on the right across from Ventana Resort. If you reach Nepenthe you went too far. Stop at the guard 'shack' they usually ask purpose of your visit and your last name. I think on one occasion when it was busy they asked if we had a reservation. Our most recent visit was a weekday at 2pm, it was not busy. The deck seats about 30 people so I suppose if they reach capacity they may turn you away but that has never happened to us. The restaurant is open to the public but the grounds are off limits, residents only. There are parking lots on the left just before the reception building, go into reception, up the stairs, exits onto a stairway up to the restaurant. read more

I cannot rave about Post Ranch Inn enough, especially in comparison to Pebble Beach Resorts (who completely ruined my last Carmel-by-the-Sea visit). Post Ranch Inn is AMAZING. I've seen many beautiful views, experienced many luxury resorts, throughout the world. PRI's gorgeous architecture echoes the CA coastal redwood vibe (morning greetings by red tail hawks & the deer were nice touches), loved the hiking, the restaurant, infinity pools & jacuzzis extending off the cliffs (perfect sunset spot), delicious in-room snacks, great activities (yoga, food, stars!!!), completely 100% worth the $$$$$. Here's the thing, there are many wonderful places to spend your time & money, so for me, what makes a place stand out, is the service. The customer service was wonderful (efficient, intuitive, considerate, non obtrusive, & kind). THAT is why I will return soon, & also recommend this establishment to family & friends. Post Ranch is beautiful as the setting is breathtaking from every place on the property. They have wonderful classes of yoga and meditation with highly skilled teachers. The food is good too with one exception. The fixed price dinner is overpriced. Your basically held captive and it makes sense they would offer it because who wants to leave the property to dine for dinner after driving hours to get there. I love this place but was very unhappy when the bill arrived and they charged an extra $30. for my waiter offering for me to try it- $145 for one person plus extra coffee charge snd soup. So it was $200 for my dinner alone with no booze! Four people was $950. Needless to say - if your pocketbook is unlimited, go for it. read more
