Took friends for their first visit to Postal Fish. We all enjoyed our meals on a rainy weekday evening. We started with a smoked trout appetizer with 'fried' saltines. It was quite flavorful and plentiful for sharing among 4 adults. The saltines were a nice touch! One of our party had shrimp and grits, which he voted 'delicious'; another had the fried seafood platter, which was hot, crisp and 'spot on' . My other friend and I each ordered the Almaco Jack (yellowtail) which was seared and served on a bed of nardello and shitto peppers and carrots. Fish was properly seared and seasoned and veggies were tasty- tho they needed to have been served hot, not luke warm. The foursome shared yummy duck fat fried fingerling potatoes. I have been frequenting Postal Fish for several years. What keeps me coming back is Chef Bill's creativity, commitment to fresh and local ingredients and a culture from the staff that you are part of their family and not just a transaction. Many of their servers have worked there for awhile now so you see the same faces each time. You won't get salmon and mashed potatoes here. You get whatever the local fresh catch is paired with a thoughtful and tasty side. I have enjoyed trying new things that I never heard of and now get excited about when I see them on the menu like triggerfish and monkfish. To be honest I would never have thought of ordering these items but once I tried them I realized just how good these lesser know species are especially fresh and cooked perfectly. For the nights I am not wanting seafood there is usually at least one meat and pasta dish. I absolutely love the pork chop from local farms and my wife usually orders the gnocci or risotto which is ridiculous especially when paired with sea scallops. They also have a very extensive bourbon collection at a great price point and a bartender that is creative and will make you whatever you like. I typically ask him to surprise me which has opened my pallette to new drinks. For those in Durham and Raleigh its worth the drive and you can park right out front and not worry about parking and all the traffic. read more

This was our first time here. I made a 6:00 reservation which was unnecessary. Service was friendly, helpful and fast. The ambiance was wonderful - especially for an old post office. It was rainy and cold tonight so their outdoor seating was closed. Looked really nice. We started with the grilled oysters which were some of the best I've ever had. We also ordered the smoked fish dip and pimento cheese for my son who doesn't like fish. My husband had the mushroom risotto and I had the wood fired shrimp. I wanted a veggie but there weren't many options for a side and the salad wasn't my jam. I got the smokehouse lounge to drink and it was yummy! Can't wait to go back. read more

My sister and niece both ordered the Drum, and I had the soft shelled crab. This was after we shared the smoked trout and fried crackers and buttered biscuits appetizers. We also shared a bottle of wine. All of the food was good to excellent. They pay attention to both playing and pairing to good effect. Accompanying sauces and vegetables were spot on. Service was acceptable. Price for all was $190 before the tip, so expensive, but good value. We will return. read more

First time visiting this hidden gem, passers by it many times. The food is cooked perfectly, the chef knows how to balance flavour, texture and eye appeal. The restaurant was roomy and tables weren't crammed together. This is accessible to those with mobility devices to move around with ease. The waiter was great and knowledgeable about the menu. The cheddary biscuit appetizers were delicious. We liked the first order so much we had seconds. The fish was fresh and tasty as was my friends salad. The wine and the grits were five stars! I feel this place is a tad overrated. They sure know how to write up a description of the food and make you want to order everything on the menu however i found myself thinking that when the plate arrived the vegetables were barely visible that they mentioned. I loved the hush puppies. The table enjoyed the fritters. The trout was flavorful and the gnocchi dumplings were good without the sauce which i could have lived without. The other dinner loved her shrimp and grits. If you are going to offer outdoor seating please try to prevent flies as much as possible. I was totally uncomfortable and my dinner ruined due to the fly infestation buzzing all around the table and our food. Which left me in a growly mood. Put out some foggers in the morning--hire a pest company but do something as nothing is more disgusting than a filthy fly when your trying to eat. read more

For the appetizers we ordered roasted beets with goat cheese and fried oysters. We had hoped to get fresh oysters but there was no shucker tonight. For our main courses my husband ordered the flounder and scallops, my son ordered the whole bass, my daughter in love ordered the catfish, and I ordered the fire grilled shrimp. This is one of those places that's been on my "must review" list for months and months, but every time I sit down to write it, I think of something else on the menu I want to try first - but since I will probably never achieve that equilibrium, here we go. First: this is a LOUDASS restaurant, so if that is not your thing, don't come, and definitely don't come and then complain to the super-sweet host staff. Its location in the old post office is quaint and eclectic, and I'm personally obsessed with the insane stone walls that make me feel like I'm back in the sunken great room of my childhood 70s split-level. There are a variety of seating options, from the bar to a family table to a mix of two- and four-tops. Highly recommend a reservation, though; just tried to walk in on a Saturday at 5:45p and was given an estimated seating time of 7:30p -- so, the secret's out, y'all. The foooooooood, omg. Ok, so. The hushpuppies are only ok to me. They aren't as good as the outdoor fish camp ones of my South Carolina youth (yes, this review doubles as my memoir, thank you), which remain the quintessence of oblong corny goodness. But, I always forget about PFC's bread bucket and accidentally order hush puppies too. Don't do that - the bread bucket stands alone. It's Parker House style buns with huge salt crystals on top; I die. Also perfect here: the fried oysters. I recently tried the mushroom dumplings because I like to try non-seafood stuff at seafood places to see if they put the same care into the construction of the dish. These were decent but not worthy of a repeat order OR skipping fried things. Still on my list to try - the key lime pie. This is my all time favorite dessert and I'm on a quest to try every available version, but I need to stay away from that bread bucket if this dream is to become reality, alas. read more

Don't sit outside unless you want to be joined by flies. Our dinner was overwhelmed with "uninvited guests " as our waiter put it. I thought it was rather unfortunate and really ruined my appetite quickly. The bread was fresh and fluffy and the serving of hush puppies were huge. I didn't enjoy the fish spread which was a very strong flavor - overwhelmingly fishy and not balanced. The scallops are excellently cooked and paired beautifully with vegetables. The shrimp and grits were interesting- larger grits, lots of onions with beautiful shrimp but by this point the flies had overwhelmed us. While the restaurant and our waiter noticed, they seemed completely to feel it was our problem. a few bugs are to be expected sitting outside but we were basically among 50 flies which feels disgusting. The location is super cute! The restaurant was built inside of an old post office and the decor is lovely. It does seem a bit too open, like there's a good bit of unused space, but other than that, I enjoyed the atmopshere. I ended up choosing bacon fat monkfish because I'd never had it before and the server said it was one of her favorites. I didn't expect it to be so rich, but considering the words "bacon" and "fat" were written in the description, that's on me. The risotto was nice but heavy. The fish itself I wasn't a huge fan of, but I felt the portion size was nice for the price (which I think was around $21). My friend decided on the blackened trout and that looked much more appealing to me. It came on a bed of bright greens - I definitely had food envy. I wouldn't choose the monkfish again, but I would absolutely return and try different dishes. I realize that's a hard complement to live up to, but to their credit they absolutely do!Tonight my wife and I had a lovely dinner there. I had the blackened catfish with a chorizo sauce. That was frankly unbelievable. My wife had a pork chop. Both these items are not always on the menu. In fact, their menu changes weekly. If you live in the Pittsboro area or even in the greater Raleigh area, it's worth a trip to have a phenomenal meal here at postal fish company. Apps: Nag's head fish spread with buttered saltine. 1/2 dozen oysters (this time three types of NC) Dinner: Scollops with a pesto and vegetable mix (excellent, like woah). Trout with garden greens/tomatoes and balsamic (good, had a purposeful smokey flavor) Dessert: Cheese cake with black berry coolie. (Light but moist interior, the exact way it should be). Wine: A Spanish white (grape I couldn't pronounce) that had a slight effervescence. Somewhat like a pino. Waitress knew the wine menu well so she was able to make meaningful recommendations: awesome. This company sells fish for you to eat. I don't know if they are associated with the USPS but that is a possibility. I will update after I contact USPS. My dog absolutely LOVES fish. He likes salmons, tunas and occasionally calamari. He gets fish flavored treats when he does a good sit or rollover. I am taking my dog to the beach soon so that he can see where all his food comes from. I've been wanting to try this place in Pittsboro since it got high ratings and because I love seafood! I'm originally from Virginia Beach and am used to seafood being readily available so moving to the Triangle was a bit of an eye-opener as I really can't find many seafood places being more inland. The ambiance of the place is nice. Good seating with indoor/outdoor options and the dining area is a decent size. It's actually bigger than I thought it would be. They also have a pretty good bar area and I spotted some high quality bourbon there if that's your thing! For appetizers we ordered the fried oysters and the smoked fish dip. The fried oysters were a pretty big. It is lightly breaded which I like because you can taste more of the seafood itself and not just breading. The oysters were good and creamy and pretty much what you would expect from a fried oyster. The sauce that it was in was pretty good as well. The smoked fish dip reminded me a little bit of tuna salad but with a smoky flavor. Honestly, I loved it! Probably because I like tuna salad but with the extra smokiness, mixed with the sweet relish on top, it was just an overall solid dip. For the main course my wife and I ordered the Sapelo Island GA Middleneck Clams and the NC Cedar Island fry. I loved that the clams aren't over dressed. Just some white wine, sweet garlic and butter. Honestly, simple is best and I felt like they did a good job at not over complicating it. Clams are already opened, and all you have to do is take them out, bathe them in the juices and go to town. The fried plate was ok. Nothing much to it really. Fried fish, oysters and shrimp. It was good, but nothing really wowed me. I will say that it wasn't overly breaded and it was more of a "soft" fry where the food wasn't too crispy or greasy. That's how I prefer my fried seafood. The fish (don't remember what kind), was actually juicy though even though it was fried. That was nice. The homemade chips were pretty good. The hushpuppies were a little dry which I found disappointing. The icebox slaw, however, was actually very good. It's not like your typical creamy slaw. It's more of a "fresh" slaw. It was sweet and tangy. Reminiscent of sauerkraut. I thought this actually complimented all the fried food on the rest of the plate to give your palate a little cleansing. My favorite part of the night was the dessert. We ordered the oreo bread pudding with caramel drizzle and ice cream. I'm partial to bread pudding and have had a lot of them in my day, and I will say that this was especially delicious. The texture of the bread was perfect. Not too mushy and hard enough to withstand the melty ice cream but not too hard where it tastes stale. It also wasn't overly sweet. I have a sweet tooth and love things sweet, but this was just at the right level. Overall, I'm giving this place 3 stars not because the food was bad. I think because we are more inland, the price for seafood here is a little different than what I'm typically used to. I felt like the portion sizes for the price were a little small, and I'm not sure if the tastes met up to the price point. The fried oysters are dried out and too salty so I'd avoid that but... They used to serve bread to start and no longer so that's a bummer.
