We had 4 tapas, a half order of the seafood paella and flan. This was our 2nd visit to BWB. Every tapas was delicious. Ranking them: 1st: spicy shrimp (gambas al ajillo) 2nd: okra (that paprika kick was chefs kiss) 3rd: eggplant caponata (slightly one dimensional but buttery goodness) 4th: zucchini/corn fritters (a little doughy but the dill lemon sauce was delish) The paella took about an hour to get to our table and it was overcooked. :( Flan was delicious and service was very good. It's been well over 9 months since I last raved about Barcelona Wine Bar, located in the heart of downtown Raleigh. I am compelled to remind every resident and every visitor to make this a "must go to and enjoy" place for either brunch on Saturday or Sunday, or for dinner any night of the week. Go for the amazing cuisine, vast wine list, and stay for the outstanding service! Recently, we have found ourselves trying not to enjoy just our go-to favorites that are mainstays on the ever-evolving menu. We have been blown away by the flavors of the large plate option called Chicken Pimientos. Don't let the name throw you, because it's not super spicy, it just has a nice kick to it with delicious potatoes accompanying the very moist and flavorful chicken. The way the kitchen team at Barcelona handles the preparation of the eggplant caponata is impressive and very unique. Other favorites on the tapas section of the menu recently are stuffed piquillos, corn zucchini bunuelos (think fair food turned healthy!), Wagyu carpaccio, lamb kofta, and pulpo gallego. Remember that their tapas offerings rotate in and out, oftentimes based on the season and availability of fresh products. The wine offerings are unparalleled in the city of Raleigh, and when you visit for dinner on a Monday evening, every bottle is half-priced. Can't beat that for a way to jump-start your work week! We tend to sit at the bar on most visits as bartenders Kira and Cameron truly handle their bar with a welcoming vibe and impressive ease. We dined at Barcelona Wine Bar for Mother's Day. The restaurant decor is modern and beautiful. I must also not that our service was truly exceptional. We shared a glass of cava, which was crisp and delicious. I chose the aperitivo board and my husband ordered the paella mariscos. My husband lived in Spain for a while so he had high hopes for the paella; alas, it was very salty and the calamari was missing. It was so salty that we only had one or two bites. I keep telling my husband that he just shouldn't order paella in the US anymore. The manager was extremely accommodating and offered many options to help! The aperitivo board was divine. The items were bursting with flavors. My favorites were the marcona almonds, the aged manchego, and the potatas bravas. The table bread and oil were also fresh and delicious. There was another dish that I'm not sure if we ordered or if it was included, but the fish flavor was too strong for me so I passed on that. My husband enjoyed it though. Tapas tapas and more tapas! One better than the other. We did run into a huge problem though, explained in more detail below. Wife and I started our quick little anniversary getaway here, and they nailed it. The place itself is gorgeous. Huge patio with greenery, baller bar area in the middle of the upscale open space, which gives a modern and chic vibe. That problem I mentioned? Deciding what we were going to order off of the amazingly stacked tapas menu. One sounded better than the other, plates coming out to the left and right of us...we were deer in headlights not knowing what to do, words didn't come out when our friendly and knowledgeable server came by. As far as problems go at a restaurant, I guess it could have been worse. With helpful guidance and knowing our love for anything foodie related, we just started picking one by one after a few sips of our well balanced cocktails (another large menu with anything and everything for fellow cocktail lovers out there). Had to go with a meat and charcuterie board first. A decadent manchego, a creamy French that was smooth and tangy, plus a 20 month cured ham that was salty and smoky. Honestly everything that came out after was a 10/10. From the wild mushrooms, Wagyu carpaccio and bone marrow, to the pork belly, corn bunuelos and steak paillard...everything was cooked to perfection with amazing spices and sauces that complemented each dish perfectly. Came here recently with a friend for ~girl dinner~ and Barcelona continues to reign supreme when it comes to tapas. We went on a Monday, which was perfect because wine bottles were half off. So of course we split a bottle of cava (or two) between us for the evening. We had a wonderful time chatting and sipping our cava - it was a beautiful evening, and they had a steady flow of customers but not too crazy. While there we got an order of the spinach & chickpea cazuela, burrata, charred squash, croquetas, mahi mahi la plancha, and wagyu carpaccio. My favorite tapa hands down, always and forever, will be their croquetas. They are the best I have ever had, and I go to places to try their croquetas to see if they can beat Barcelona's (they never do). I also loved the burrata. We were torn between that and the goat cheese. I am happy we went with the burrata. The charred squash and mahi mahi were not my favorite but everything was still very good overall. Then for dessert we split the olive oil cake. Again, I will try olive oil cake at other places and I have never found one that has beat the cake at Barcelona for me. Between the two of us, I think it was $70 each with tip, which feels like a bargain for everything we got. So in short, definitely give a Monday Girl's Dinner a try. read more

Classy lively and delicious Came here for Friday night with some friends. Great selection of wine and tapas we had an amazing time here. Venue: lively, has tables, and full bar. It was sprinkling so I didn't see much people in the patio but available. Ambien lighting with lively music. Gets very busy. Simple and modern decor. Food: tried various tapa. Generally they were all good. Ordered charcuterie- simple choices recommended by the server was decent. Pulpo (octopus) was on the drier side but good flavor. Goat cheese was good but I felt it needed more syrup. Wagyu carpaccio was good- mild taste. There was another cooked Wagyu tapa I was not a fan. What took the show that was not on the menu that night was the bone marrow. Get it! Love love love. The wine recommended by our server was exceptional. All in all, I would come back. I like Barcelona Wine Bar mainly because they are open late so you can have a nice meal after 9 pm. The bar is the highlight as they make good crafted cocktails and they do have an extensive wine list. The ambiance is dark and nice for couples or friends. The booths at the bar are not the most comfortable, so I prefer a table. The tapas are those you find at a traditional Spanish tapas place. The papas being amongst the most popular are a good staple. The charcuterie is also very nice. The other tapas can be hit or miss depending on what is seasonally offered. On this visit, I wanted Brussels sprouts but they were no longer on the menu and the lamb was not a bone in lamb but rather ground meatballs. Not bad, just not what I expected. It's not a place I seek out to come, but it's solid food and drinks that fills a need when I want a late bite. read more

Had some of the best Tapas here when I was in Raleigh. Located right outside the Dillon Hotel in downtown Raleigh it was walking distance from the hotel and one of the few place opened past 10. Sat at the bar, the bartender was friendly and helpful. We ordered a nice Vinho Verde wine and a few small plates. The food was over the top . One dish was better than the other. Gambas al Ajillo- Shrimps sautéed in garlic, wine, and oil. Albondigos - spicy meatballs in a red sauce. I can highly recommend thes meatballs. Super chill vibe and a great place for date night. If they ask if you want bread before your meal, say YES! That was one of my favorite things, comes out hot and fresh. Small plates enjoyed: 1. Modern atmosphere with Spanish tapas and food but service could use a bit of work. Our group came here for a Sunday brunch for a table of 8 and overall the food was good but the service was infrequent and when the food came it started out slow and then everything all at once so pacing could be improved. I ordered a wine flight and some friends got cocktails that came but mine didn't arrive until the end of the meal. For a group our size, we requested some serving utensils but they didn't come. Other than the service hiccups, they had some good food dishes that I enjoyed including the Peach Montadito and Gambas and Grits. We also ordered the Paella Mariscos and the Paella Salvaje. They were good but missing the crisp rice on the bottom. Overall, not a bad place but decent food and improvements with service would make it much more enjoyable. read more

Love this place. Noisy, but the food is amazing, as is the wine selection. Tapas, allow you to try many dishes paired with different wines. Wines can be ordered by the bottle or in 3/6 oz glass, so you can pace yourself, and pair the right wine with the food. Bartenders will help you, so no worries. Cameron and Justin are great. As for the food, outstanding and consistent every time...almost. My favorites are the boquerones (anchovies), I know, I hate them too, but these are to die for, and I never skip ordering them when I'm here. The steak Paillard is marinated in something that is nothing short of heaven ( they overcooked it tonight for the first time ever) but still outstanding. The Rezabal goes with just about everything so it's become my go to choice on the wine. For desert, I go to the figs with Chorizo and the Tanat ( desert wine from Uruguay). Of course, they were out of that tonight , so I tried the dates. Normally, they are wrapped in bacon, but, bacon tends to overwhelm just about everything. So I asked them to swap the bacon for prosciutto. They only had Serrano, but they agreed. It was perfect. Did I say I love this place. Highly recommended read more

It was still good, but the tapas blew that plate out of the park and they were filling. The mojito I ordered was also really good! This place was recommended to us when we were looking for a fun place to have dinner and drinks after our daughter's college graduation. There were seven of us and the place was packed. We had a reservation and were sat fairly quickly at an outside tall table. These tables were so tightly packs and the stools were tall and uncomfortable. I asked our wait person if we could have a different more comfortable table and he said there weren't any available. It was extremely loud and warm. The menu was difficult to follow. It seemed like a lot of small plates for sharing which would be fine but not what we had expected. Not my favorite Raleigh experience. But also not for me. Fresh sour dough was available too in a basket. They had a wonderful wi e selection and I went for a verde. Service was top notch h and the handled allergies like it was their job! I came here to celebrate a friend's birthday, and I'll definitely say the ambiance delivers with upscale, fun vibes. My one complaint is that it can be a tad loud. The wait staff was so helpful in accommodating our larger group. They even offered their special drink, which requires a ladder for full effect :) For larger groups they request that you order off of a set menu, which features all of the classics like paella, patatas bravas, veggies, cheese etc. It also came with a generous portion of a meat board. The food is high quality, but I will admit at some times it feels more trendy and visually appealing than authentic. I'll be back for the olive oil cake, but overall 4 stars because I'd prefer more authentic tasting tapas. read more

This is probably my 15th time at Barcelona. Definitely a go-to spot. This time I got the meatballs and chorizo with figs. There was a slight spice to the meatballs but for us mild spicers it's totally tolerable. My first time trying the chorizo with figs, salty sweet combo. Visually not the most appealing but it tastes better than it looks. Outside of that, the potatoes and pan con tomate are always safe especially as a base for any meats. Not for the faint of heart - at least not on a Friday night. This is not a quiet tapas restaurant (and I did not realize this was a chain!). High ceilings, hard surfaces, and pounding music make conversation impossible unless you're seated outside. Overall the food was decent - presentation of the manchego was disappointing and consisted of a slab of cheese and a small square of quince paste (no bread/crackers). The whole branzino was good but a little bland; the gambas al ajillo were probably the only real highlight. The paella mariscos (which took 45 minutes) was the most disappointing - the rice was overcooked, the dish was overly salty, and there was no socarrat! read more

My friend hosted a brunch party here and it was really nice! They have a few areas for seating that can be made completely private - and the food was good. We tried the frittata, shakshuka, bread (loved the bread) and then some desserts like flan. Staff was thoughtful and remembered everyone's complicated drink orders. Food was great but didn't have a great experience here. Came on a Saturday night at 8pm, so it was super busy. Had to wait 30 minutes past our reservation time to be sat. We ordered everything within 5 minutes of being sat, most dishes came out quickly EXCEPT the patatas bravas (probably the #1 most popular item). We waited about 45 minutes to get our patatas. The table next to us that sat at least 30 minutes after us got their patatas within 5 minutes, while we were still waiting on ours. That was really annoying to see them get theirs before us, we also had to remind our server (she was nice) that we were still waiting. Really crowded dining area, tiny tables that are less than a foot away from the other people. Servers stand between the tables and nearly knock your food off your table because it's so tight.
