How is it that I have never reviewed my favorite Sushi Bar on and off island? Yikes!…read more I'm fortunate to live on island and make every opportunity to get my sushi fix here. This place has the freshest and most well prepared sushi, sashimi and "omakase" (chefs choice original roll). Omakase is ALWAYS out of this world no matter which chef came up with that nights special. The fish is always super fresh so they don't need to drown it in sauces. The flavors pop pop pop with every chew. Amazing! Some of my favorites are the scallop sashimi (incredibly fresh every time), chili hamachi, uni (sea urchin-not for everyone) and always omakase roll or two. Also, if artichoke is in season I like the steamed one, a cup of chowder always hits the spot, pretty killer tempura, really great fish and chips and I know I'm missing a bunch of stuff but now I'm salivating and need to wrap this review up so I can drive over. I don't eat in the restaurant part so much but that's because I'm a total hound for the sushi. When I have it's always great. Don't skip dessert!

The rolls were incredible!!!! And the presentation was pretty:) our server was super sweet too! The views outside are so beautiful too to relax and enjoy drinks! This is gonna be a staple spot on all of our future Kauai trips!

The Churro French Toast is life changing. Full order can easily feed 3-4 people. Crispy, sweet, yet soft and tasty inside. Best description is a combination of a churro, mixed with a cinnamon roll, mixed with a donut. Would highly recommend. They offer a half portion too which is great for 2 people to share. The breakfast burritos are legit. Massive, tasty, delicious, and filling. About the same size and width as a 32oz Yeti bottle. Ordered the veggie burrito with bacon and the Smoked Pork burrito. Loved both. Tots, veggies, cheese, meat, all loaded. Even the salsas were 10/10. Seating is limited, maybe enough for 8-10 people total to sit inside, but they take to go orders and you can walk 5 minutes to Hanalei beach and eat by the ocean. The shrimp was cooked to perfection: juicy, tender, and coated in the most delicious garlic sauce. Every bite was so flavorful! The Churros French Toast was actually one of the reasons we came here because it's so popular, and it absolutely did not disappoint! It looks like it would be super sweet, but surprisingly, it's not. It's perfectly crunchy on the outside, moist in the middle, and just the right amount of sweetness. So delicious! And to top it all off, you get to enjoy this fantastic food with a beautiful Kauai view. Overall, such a wonderful experience. If you're visiting Kauai, I highly recommend putting Wake Up Delicious on your list you won't be disappointed!

It honestly was kind of bland, as I see a few other reviewers also noted, which surprised me. The fish was really good though. Save some brioche to have with this dish!! The Flavors are well balanced not too sweet or salty. Not hot spicy either. The Hawaiian fish with couscous was amazing! Fresh fish of the day, tomato couscous, sun dried tomatoes and fresh cherry tomatoes. This was delicious! Highly recommend! Finally the pizzetta with pork belly, pineapple jam and pickled peppers was also very tasty. The crust is thin but not flimsy. Just enough to hold the toppings. I wouldn't have ordered the brioche had I known this was an actual pizza! It's about an 8" pizza. The portions are generous sized for sharing. The waitress suggests two per person but only if you have a big appetite. I think three would be just right. We took the rest of the pizza home. Ambiance is great, staff is also very nice. It is a little pricier but it is Kauai!

Don't be misled by older Yelp reviews attached to the previous incarnation; the new team has introduced an open, airy atmosphere and a elevated menu centered around fresh, high-quality ingredients. A quick heads-up for prospective diners: they are still in the process of finalizing their liquor license. However, they make BYOB seamless! You can easily grab a bottle across the street at the market or down the road at the liquor store , and the staff will gladly set you up at the table for a very reasonable $5-per-person corkage fee. We picked up a bottle of Joel Gott Chardonnay nearby, which paired beautifully with our meal. As for the food, the presentation and taste were outstanding: Catch of the Day (Marlin): Macadamia-crusted to perfection and served with a subtle, light curry sauce, accompanied by fresh vegetables and rice. Perfectly cooked and full of tropical flavor. Chicken & Vegetable Soup: A rich, comforting bowl packed with fresh veggies, served alongside a warm, crusty roll. Juicy, flavorful, with crispy fries on the side. Jake went for the Dewey's Burger with Gorgonzola and sweet caramelized onions and loved it. They're currently BYOB, but do not sleep on the mocktails. WOW. They're so good you might forget you wanted alcohol in the first place. And a huge shout-out to Chloe, the OG bartender. She gets it done and always with a smile. Really makes for a 5-star experience So happy to see this Hanalei institution open again. Great food, fresh vibe, great people. We'll definitely be back!

I'm not sure what is worse - the dolphin restaurant or this. Both were expensive and terrible. We were in Hanalei for a week and couldn't find any decent food even thought we paid for it. We are still here as I write this and the best food we got was fish from foodland grocery we cooked ourselves. We paid about $500 eating at three "nice" restaurants in Kauai And the food was just terrible My fish was actually pretty gross for $50 here and my girlfriend's pasta seemed like something from the grocery store for $32. I'm not kidding - like some quick box pasta you'd make yourself and flavored poorly I talked to a local on the beach who said "don't even try any of these places". I'm like "well how do we eat then!" So they rely on each other being cheap and terrible. We even tried the beach house on the other side of the island which was much better than both of these but still It was a $100 meal that we paid $250 for .... Kauai . well it kinda sucks to be honest. Our hotel was garbage for $3000 as well. read more

Just because this one of the few places in town, doesn't mean you have to go there. Way over-priced, especially considering the rather mediocre food. I couldn't find a single mushroom in my mushroom soup (not even a trace.. let alone flavor) , which felt like rinsing water with a lot of salt and pepper, served lukewarm (was heated to an acceptable temperature upon request). The Ahi Tuna, which I've requested medium-rare, ended up so overcooked it was sad. When commenting about it to the waitress, she said - I see a piece of red there (indeed, there was a small part of the tuna in the middle, the size of a penny, which was not destroyed). The Kona coffee was good, but I guess that's because they didn't figure out a way how to destroy it yet. The do get one star above the minimum for the friendly service. Reading the comments of other reviewers, I guess my experience was not that different than most. I guess I should have read them before going there... read more

Just ok- but lovely atmosphere. I went with my mother when she visited the island we sat on the deck and ordered the pasta dish minus the prawns since she is vegetarian and I am vegan- the pasta was just ok- it cost around $22 for a plate of pasta minus the expensive prawns, so it was hard to enjoy an ordinary dish at such a high price. There was a baguette with 3 types of dipping hummus which was also ordered as an entree- it was terrible i don't recommend it at all, the bread was very hard stale like and the spreads were over salted and old rancid tasting. The salad however was good to ok. But by far the best part of the meal was the service. The middle aged waitress was so classy attentive friendly yet professional and we felt impelled to leave her a very good tip despite the food not being that agreeable . This place is...interesting. On the one hand, the food is incredible. One of the most unique meals we have had in Kauai. The chef perfectly prepares each dish with style and flair. The flavors were amazing. You don't see food like this elsewhere in Kauai. Service was friendly and prompt. On the other hand, the restaurant was incredibly dark. None of the lights were on so we asked our server if they could turn on the lights so we could see our food better. They hesitated and then went to turn on the lights. We then witnessed an older gentleman ( the owner?) walk in and berate the bartender for having the lights on. We really didn't understand this and it was quite awkward to watch. Extremely strange. New menu. We had an excellent dinner last night for a party of seven. The menu is completely changed and the new Chef, Javier is otherworldly on this part of the island. The menu now includes Wagu Steak and it was so good are entire group is heading back tonight to have it again. The Mahi Mahi with fried local breadfruit to dip into the tasty pina colada sauce was a special I look forward to coming back to. One person in our party love the special salad so much he had a second. It was not supper busy, but we had a fun time and we could totally hear the conversation for the entire table as it is not one of those super noisy spots. That's the update. read more

Our experience at Postcards was nothing short of disappointing. The pricing is absolutely outrageous. We were charged $18 for a small plate of plain pasta with olive oil for a child--something that should cost a fraction of that. To make matters worse, they had the audacity to charge $7 for a kid's lemonade. It's an absurd ripoff, and they should be ashamed. Service was rushed and impersonal, making us feel like an inconvenience rather than valued guests. The menu is extremely limited, with very few appealing options. Overall, the experience felt like a complete scam--we left feeling robbed and frustrated. Definitely would not recommend. read more

We were on our last night in Hanalei. At 8:20pm we called Postcards hoping to stop in for dessert. The hostess on the phone, informed us they close at 9pm. However, she encouraged us to stop right in and we would be served. Ten minutes later we arrived only to be turned away at the door being told we were too late. Staff was so concerned about closing the doors that they were turning away customers left and right. Horrible customer service. We will never go back and highly encourage anyone visiting Hanalei to avoid Postcards at all costs. Would have given a zero star rating if this was an option. read more

Came here for dinner to try it out (we had already been everywhere else a few times) I can't recommend this to anyone unfortunately... I ordered a bottle of wine and our waitress just poured the whole glass - never let me try it properly first.. the rest of the staff wasn't the best. The food is wayyyy over priced for what it is... not impressed. Interesting flavors but nothing compliments each other. Great location but poor execution which is such shame giving the beautiful environment your in. Save your money if you're thinking about coming. read more

The first fine dining restaurant in hanalei with a straight forward menu they have kept at over the years for a reason. Taro fritters and blackened ahi is my favorites. Have to also mention that Postcards was the first restaurant to use local taro, and still one of a handful presently. The high society element, reserved seating, and constant celebrity drop in keep the prices high, so know that it is fine dining beforehand to not be embarrased. read more

The staff, drinks, and food were all stellar! The crispy leek salad was especially excellent and so unique, full of umami deliciousness. The "take a hike" cocktail, which the bartender substituted gin for vodka for me, was the most lilikoi forward cocktail I've ever had and I loved it and got two. The dining room is charming with open beams and hanging basket light fixtures, and the staff was attentive and helpful throughout our meal. read more

The food was mediocre at best. Poor concept and poor execution. The crusted ahi lacked any flavor in the crust, and the accompany vegetable were inedible. The fresh catch swordfish tasted old. When we pulled up around 7pm, there was just 1 other party that was there and they were seated outside. There was live music and we asked to be seated right in front of him. Boy, that was a big mistake as the speaker was right there and it was very difficult for me and my wife to carry any kind of conversation. That was mostly my fault and I should have asked to be seated a few tables back. But it was fine as the musician was great the whole night with his soothing voice and relaxing tunes. There were only 2 servers at the time so getting my drink refilled was a little slow. We ordered the fried enoki mushrooms. Not sure where they were going with this dish as enoki mushrooms don't really have any taste to them. Plus it's a little stringy. I thought it was a little oily. Not sure if the oil was hot enough when they fried this, but it was a bit greasy and since it didn't have any taste to it, the tartar sauce pretty much carried the dish. My ribeye, however, was great. It was cooked medium-rare with a lot of mashed potatoes. The peppercorn cream sauce was a nice touch and didn't overshadow the meat. The one thing I would suggest is that the ribeye was on the thin side, so it didn't get that char crispiness that you would be able to get on a thicker steak. Since I asked for it to be medium rare, getting the desired texture would not be possible. I would have liked to be thicker as the bite would be more substantial. I normally associate a thin cut to a cheap or budget steak. Flavor-wise and temp, it was perfect. There was so much mashed potatoes that I ended up leaving half of it on the plate. We specifically came here for the fish dishes that use local fish. I never had the chance to eat here before so this review is solely based on my experience yesterday. Poke nachos ($23): 7/10, solid nothing special Soup of the day, Fisherman's Jalapeño corn chowder ($5): 6.5/10, also decently solid but nothing special. The little kick of spice was nice. Hukilau mixed grill ($49): 7/10, the sauce was delicious and trying the various fish was fun. Fish were cooked well and not too dry. The one on the far right was my favorite. Nairabi ($48): 6/10, the crust was excellent but I did not like the pumpkin curry sauce. The marlin actually tasted better when I mixed it with the sauce of the mixed grill. Mashed potatoes were decent. Marlin was a tad bit dry but not sure if that's how it's supposed to be. Coconut cheesecake ($14.5): 9/10, I LOVE COCONUT! Delicious dessert, portion was a lil small tho Lava cake ($18): 3/10, very okayy I personally did not like it especially the outside chocolate cake part tasted off We were seated in a spot on the lanai to the side which was beautiful and peaceful. There was a lot of flavors going on with the dishes that felt distracting to me that didn't truly bring out the taste of the fish. Sauce is the most important part of fish dishes. I also don't know if it might've been the food but my partner had a stomach ache afterwards. We also gave our fish leftovers to my brother and it hurt his stomach too lol I was fine though so not sure from what.

The ribeye steak was asked to be done medium however in some parts it seemed like it was medium rare/rare. The steak sauce surrounding the steak made up for it but it was nothing too special. The truffle fries were the best part of the whole dinner experience. The fries were cooked perfectly golden brown and are shoestring fries. The truffle and parmesan cheese really made these fries shine as they are crunchy and soft on the inside with that hint of cheese. The li ribs were overcooked and hard. The sauce is good but i would definitely skip out on this. The kalua pig sliders were also another favorite dish of mind they tasted soft and juicy. The chicken wings were cooked to perfection and i really enjoyed this as well. We also had several drinks from this establishment as well but the ones that truly spoke out to us were the pina colada and lava flow slushies. They tasted very sweet but also had a good amount of kick towards it in the end. The passionfruit martini was also refreshing but did have a slight bitter taste to it. The mai tais were not the best i ever had but they are okay. Now we get onto the deserts. The lumpia cheesecake was very enjoyable. It was very crunchy on the outside and very soft and gooey in the inside. The kauai ice cream pie was overwhelmingly sweet. I would consider it if you love very sweet desserts but it was not for me. Some nice things to know is happy hour from 5-6pm /9-10pm and they usually have $5 off snacks & $4 off cocktails/drinks. They also have very soothing live music events during those times which could really set the mood. I loved the atmosphere this restaurant puts out. Is it the best restaurant on the island ? Probably not. But it's reasonable priced and the amount of food you get is a good price. Consider this place for good drinks and bar food while listening to nice music in the background.
