We dined here twice during our trip because the fish and the cocktails were just so good--in an area where fish and cocktails are the staple. We live in Seattle so we know fresh fish--both good and bad. Fresh marlin was the special and it was exceptional. Hubby had the fish and chips; I had the fish taco. The pieces of fish were large, tender, juicy and cooked perfectly with a light batter that was a perfect compliment to the fish but not overwhelming. The pieces of fish were huge. Cocktails are mixed well and smoothly. The space is small but spacious with open air seating that lends itself to chatting with your fellow diner. If you can, sit at the bar and you may meet Frank, the resident gecko who pops his head in occasionally. Several smaller geckos crawl on the flat screens which add to the charm of the place. Service was fast and friendly, and as it turns out the manager is the former manager of an excellent restaurant in our neighborhood back in Seattle who moved to Kauai to surf. Please excuse the photos--I always forget to take photos and eat instead, so my photo of the fish taco has a big bite taken out of it, and Hubby had already ate of the three pieces of his fish and chips. Delicious food and great service -- no wait even around 12:30 on a Friday afternoon! The market across the street was packed, but that was expected. I ordered the Gorgonzola burger, which was juicy, flavorful, and cooked perfectly. My husband had the fish and chips made with flaky ono (aka "sea chicken") -- absolutely delicious! The Mai Tai and local beers were ice cold and hit the spot. Our total was about $75 for two, which felt very reasonable for a tourist town. We'll definitely be back! read more

This place is now under new ownership. The prior owners moved back to Virginia, and the new ownership changed some things, but not for the better. The Cesar salad is not fresh tasting at all. It is wilted and the dressing tastes store bought. My biggest sadness was that this used to be one of my favorite club sandwiches. They used to use soft fresh bread and good quality meat. They now use hard plain toasted white bread and they didn't even cut it like a club sandwich into 4 pieces. Service was fine but she did not even pass out the silverware, napkins or appetizer plates. Just dropped it off at the end of the table and walked away. We have recommended this place for many years to many people, but this place is now a pass. read more

I ate here twice which tells you that i enjoyed it. Although it is called gourmet, the menu has fish and chips, burgers and sandwiches. Overall, the place is casual. I loved the vibe of the place and the big windows behind the bar which look out on the Island. I was tempted to hang out and have a second drink. I had the fish sandwich on one day and the gargonzola burger on the other. Both were good but I was surrpised that I barely tasted the gargonzola on the burger. This little local restaurant was a little hidden gem located in the Hannalei shopping center old Hanalei school. It's been here for a while. You can tell by the decor for the building. You can sit inside or out and they have the doors open so the wind was going through, which of course made me cold. But they have gluten-free buns. So I was able to get a Burger and side salad because the fries were preseasoned and therefore not gluten-free which seems to be the theme on this island. Smh. The young lady who took our order was very friendly and gluten-free herself so she knew exactly what I was going through and has a list of items that can be gluten-free. I ordered Fresh Island Fish Sandwich at $26.95 Grilled fresh garlic buttered fish served with a lemon caper dill mayonnaise and "the works" on a toasted gluten-free bun. It was huge! Juicy and very flavorful. The House salad was also huge and the house thousand Island dressing that came with it was delicious. My husband ordered Moe's Ultimate Burger at $23.95 with Guacamole, bacon and pepper jack cheese with "the works" and his came with the seasoned fries. It was a huge burger as well and very flavorful. He enjoyed it. We ordered the virgin piña colada's at $7.75ea. They were in a 10-120z or regular size glass and tasted pretty good coming in at a cool third place. There's a bar inside that you can sit with TVs to watch surfing and or games. The decor is paintings from local artist from what I gather that you can also purchase. One of the best, classically made and underrated Mai tais in Hanalei! Just when you start sipping the second Mai Tai, you realize whoa that first one was STRONG! IYKYK. Had the fish and chips for the second time, just to make sure it was that good...and it is!! Piping hot...juicy, fresh fish. Be careful not to eat too fast or you will burn the crap out of your tongue and i mean this in a good way Also, i don't have a pic but their roasted garlic ceasar salad is to die for!! Huge chunks of roasted garlic!! Service is always very attentive, even if at times slow... you are on island time now! Be sure to grab an early seat on Thursdays for the live music. The meals were all very delicious and the fries were perfectly cooked, crispy, and well seasoned. Only one star less than 5 since it is a little pricey for the value -- $16 for one taco is steep, and the $10 for the added chicken on the salad felt high too. What a good local hole in the wall eatery! We were actually trying to get into Tahiti Nui, but they were inexplicably closed. Then we walked over to Kalypso and they were had a long wait. We wandered into the Hanalei gourmet where we were seated within a few minutes by a delightful hostess. It's definitely not fancy. Our waitress was sweet, prompt and very helpful. Fish in the fish taco was so tough and stringy (ie, cheap frozen fish), wife compared it to chicken. Considering the price of the fish taco went from ~$9 in 2022 to ~$16 in 2024, inexcusable. This is a good spot for casual eats that are freshly prepared. Right on the main street in Hanalei you can choose to dine inside or out on the busy patio and watch passerby's. If you are looking for a sit down dining venue and not the beach or at a food truck where you have to take your meal to go, this is a good option. We had the grilled fish burger which was Mahi Mahi and it was cooked perfectly, still moist, hot and flakey topped with just enough sauce that complimented the burger and not overwhelm the flavour of the fish. Served on soft squishy burger buns with shredded lettuce and tomato slice with fries on the side. Get this! I had the Rueben sandwich served with fries. Unfortunately the heat of the sandwich from being grilled made the bread soggy and greasy. The smoked meat was unevenly distributed which left only sauerkraut on the bottom half and the rest of the meat on the top half of the sandwich it still tasted good nonetheless but soggy bread was t so great. For dessert we had the Kauai mud pie which is coffee and chocolate flavoured ice cream pie and it was delish! We'll visit here again for a quick casual bite just because it'll be open when all the food trucks close at 2 or 3 pm.
