This has become a favorite stop for me over the past few years. I come about once or twice a month and I have noticed the consistency here. The same employees, the same fast and friendly service, the same tasty sandwiches and the same level of cleanliness. If you want it to eat in, the dining area is clean and bright. This area is a clean part of the city but still has some interesting people from all walks of life strolling by the large street level windows to provide for your people watching entertainment. I order delivery from this location to work and have never visited so I can't speak to in-store experience. However, always great experiences with delivery orders. Accurate, warm, delivered on time and they always find our storefront which appears to be a trick for the other delivery services in town. Delivery drivers are always friendly and professional to boot. I can't say the same for the corporate app -- when it works it's great but that's only a small percentage of the time. I want to start off by saying they do close at 7 so be mindful and there is only street parking. It is a cute little downtown area so after grabbing a bite you can definitely walk around. The two ladies that helped me were super sweet. I ended up getting the chicken cheddar sandwich with a bottle of coke and my husband just wanted an milkshake. The cost was around 19 dollars which isn't bad considering the regular size sandwich which two people can happily eat if you just want a small meal. They weren't busy but we also went around 6:30pm. Yay!!! Finally, we have a Potbelly! I wasn't even expecting this place to arrive in Des Moines anytime soon, so it was a pleasant surprise to find one downtown on 6th and Locust! The Atmosphere: This place is smaller than other locations I've been to in bigger cities but it was still nice and bright and fit quite a bit of people during the lunch rush! The service: We called in our order so I can only review on that but they were very friendly and helpful with any questions I had. The Food: Italian Original - 4/5 I ordered this on the house bread with lettuce, tomatoes, onions, peppers, deli mustard and mayo. It was delicious and filling! Honestly, it was so filling as is that I was only able to finish half! All in all, I would definitely come back and I hope that they start to have a little more of an extensive menu like other cities have so we can try their other varieties! Ive become entranced with their Chicken Club. It has pulled chicken and a ton of flavor for a quick turnaround sandwich shop. Most of the chicken at sandwich places, IMO, have crummy flavorless and nasty chicken. This pulled chicken, while a little salty, is soooo good with a ton of flavor. I swap out the mayo for mustard since its a bit more healthy and to my liking. I've eyeballed their cookies... but just cannot do it as i know how unhealthy they are. The doors were locked on both sides and the woman who answered when I knocked on the window smiled and lipped they were closed. I told her it was 6:45, knowing you close at 7, and she just giggled. They make me one, 4, triangle pieces of cheese, and 6 inches of bread, Wittgenstein Doritos, for $8!! They charged me $5.69 for the grilled cheese. When I asked why it was cofer, "pizza sub," the man grew frustrated with me and tools me that's what it was. Finally a Potbelly's has come to DSM! Whatever God you believe in has finally answered my prayers! As you can guess I'm a fanboy. But ever since I've moved back to DSM 7 years ago I have waited for this moment. I have craved this moment. I have dreamed of the moment. And it's finally here. It's like my life's mission is now complete. Ok maybe not yet, but as you can tell I am jacked that it's here. For me Potbelly's is the best chain-sub shop there is. Bar none. Yea,h a few get close to it but it's still miles ahead. There bread is phenomenal. They toast it to give it that crunch on the outside and nice and pillowy where it touches the ingredients. It is just that damn good. Thinking about it is making me drool all over my keyboard. I love that sandwich. I get it with their Italian spicy peppers, caution they are actually hot not the fake hot many places say, which are the best of the best! Inside is fun. Was here a week after it opened.We are SOOO grateful to see a shop open here on a Saturday downtown Des Moines....there is not much here open weekends downtown. This is a Subway knockoff....but worse.By a little bit. I didn't like the bread...it was like only halfway cook....raw...to chewy. I did not like rolling to the next station (I am disabled) from the bread and meat to the veggie section....hidden behind a board so you could not see your choices...see the condition of the produce that you would ask to be but on your sandwich...like you can at Subway. I got the Italian....house vinaigrette...bread ruined it....I ate half of a half...could not finish it...rolled it up and took it home to work on it some more so I wouldn't waste it...still couldn't eat it...BAD SAMMICH!! :-)...lol...sorry...but I could not eat it myself. It's too bad.It is hard to get places to open here in downtown Des Moines on the nites and weekends.I hope they fix this. Also...not really handicap acceptable.You have to pass the main street entrance...enter the main old building.....go around the corner...and wait for somebody to open the door for you, I just went back and tried their chili...people told me it was good....OK..ONE person said it. There are few things in life that satisfy me more than a sandwich that has got it goin' on. Potbelly Sandwich Shop is in my top three of preferred sandwich franchises because they DEFINITELY got it goin' on. If you've never been, I recommend taking a look at the menu online before you go or get ready to be decisive because though the line may be long at peak hours, it moves fast. You make your sandwich selection, they give you the option of white, multi-grain or wrap. There are also size options--regular, original or big. Then the sandwich is sent through the toaster. Another employee retrieves your sandwich and now the toppings. Potbelly offers mayo, mustard, house made hot peppers, lettuce, onion, tomato, pickle, oil and Italian seasoning. I recommend doing it all the way (unless you just abhor any of those toppings) because the mix of everything and the bread is what makes it so genuinely Potbellian. For sides they have Zapp's chips and some select Lay's options, cookies and soup. I'm a big fan of doing the classic sandwich and chips move, but I've heard the soups are truly delicious. Had a chance to check this new place out for lunch last week. I've been looking for more variety in my workday lunches so I figured I would make the four block walk down to try them out. Potbelly just opened within the last few weeks so I think they are still kind of getting their legs underneath them. The restaurant is very clean inside. Just what you would expect from a place that just opened their doors. I ordered "The Wreck" which is salami, roast beef, turkey, ham and swiss cheese. The sub is then sent though a conveyor oven then ready for the toppings. I opted for everything which is mayo, mustard, hot peppers, lettuce, onion, tomato, pickle, oil, and Italian Seasoning. The sandwich turned out really good. My only beef with it is the fact that they put so much on the sandwich that the bread eventually starts getting soggy. But otherwise it tasted great and is much better than Subway or Jimmy John's. read more

Compared to Panera, Potbelly's sandwiches are - Cheaper ($5 to $7 a compared to $8 to $10) - Bigger - Less calorie dense (especially when you get the thinner bread and get the sandwich without mayo or sauce. When doing this with Panera, there's barely a dent in the calorie count) - Consistently made well and correctly when you have add-ons or subbing ingredients Both places have pretty good sandwiches, but I've found that Potbelly is consistently delicious with better value. read more

I chose the Skinny's Mushroom Melt. Not worth the $4.20. This was pure disappointment on a multigrain bun. Imagine sliced fresh mushrooms (like the kind on a salad bar). Imagine only about 6 slices. Imagine the equivalent of 3 slices of cheese. This is what made up the sandwich. Then I asked for lettuce, onion & tomato. My tomato slices were as green as the lettuce. The lettuce was in abundance.
