Great place for soup and sandwiches if you ask me. Stopped by for lunch and the service was quick and easy. Most definitely returning to try the rest of the menu.

Got one of the drinks I paid for. The combo came with chips and a drink. I was supposed to get the sprite but did not receive it.

I ordered through Uber eats the chicken salad salad with no sauce and avocado and it was very good. I asked for a combo but they forgot to give me my drink. I also ordered the garden vegetable soup and it was not that good. Just sad that I didn't get the drink I paid for. I did order a separate drink (Nantucket Nectar) and received it in the bag.

Tried wiping off the globs of mayo, took a bite. Nope. Worst sub I've ever paid for.

Wow. This is the…read morefirst time eating Dave's Hot Chicken (from the St. Paul Ford Parkway, Mn location). I don't know why it took this long to try it out, but I'm glad I did! I told my wife and 11 year old daughter today that this was going to be dinner, so text me what they wanted from Dave's Hot Chicken. The wife wanted the two slider (hot) meal with fries, no drink. The daughter wanted the 10 piece bites (mild) with fries and the Powerade slushy. I miss-ordered, this resulting in a large bill. First time error, but shame on me. I ordered 5 Ala Cart extra hot chicken fingers. The final bill was about $85.00!!!! I paid it, and was handed a receipt, and an electronic pager (yes, these still exist!). Seeing as everything is made to order unless you order online ahead of time, I expected a wait since I ordered in person. The Highland location wasn't too busy, so I got my food in about 12 minutes. I requested extra Dave's sauce, and they accommodated with about 6 extra packs at no charge. Just be aware, that sauce packets cost extra, so they did me a solid. Since I got 2 extra orders of fries, I punched a hole in the fry containers with a knife since it would take about 10 minutes to get home. I may have ate "some" of the fries while enroute. Fantastic. Crispy, hot, and well seasoned. When I arrived home, I was admonished by my wife and child that I got way too much food. But the accolades after they tried the food were amazing. They loved it. I loved it, and the dog, much to her chagrin, did not love it because it was a bit spicy for her. She got none. My daughter's meal was great. No spice (mild), and she loved the chicken bites and fries. My wife only ate one slider (hot) because the slider totally eclipsed the bun. She said it was very good. I tried all their food and then my extra hot tender. It was pretty spicy, but I may have to order the Reaper next time. Side note: The bill, as mentioned earlier was about $85.00. That's way too expensive for a fast casual meal for 3 people. That fault was mine. I accidentally ordered 5 Ala Cart extra hot chicken tender meals. I should have prepared better, and the cost would have hovered around $40.00. Still a bit spendy, but well worth it for the food quality. Lesson learned. Anyway, this was a great meal, and we will have it again in the near future. The only major downside was the Powerade slushy my daughter ordered. It was way too sweet. The attached picture was after we ate!

Our server was super nice and even gave us a discount for giving us the wrong food before we needed to mentioned it. I got the salted Carmel and brownie malt. They kinda lacked the brownie but was still good taste overall. Appetizer: Cheese curds were decent, not super strong flavor but not oily and decent portion. Side of onion rings were pretty good. Again not strong flavor but made well. Upcharge $2 (service didn't mention) Atmosphere: Kinda loud because it's a smaller restaurant and harder to hear the person across from you. Nice older classic decor and look. Been there since 1986. Unfortunately the entree food was not good... Disappointed on the California Burger. Had no flavor. The tomato was bland and soggy, the meat had no seasoning or flavor. The avocado was dull and tasteless, Only good part on it was the lettuce. My boyfriend order the turkey club but didn't get that, the server knew it was the wrong order but still brought it to us. My bf didn't want to say anything, and the server said he took something off the bill (which we thought meant took the sandwich off, but gave us $9 off the bill) Overall. It was a decent, the appetizer, and malts are nice. But I wouldn't go there for the entrees.

We arrived and waited for a few minutes. The server eventually came out from the back and told us to sit anywhere. No greeting, no niceties. We skated over to a booth, as the floors had a layer of grime on them and were very slippery. The decorations were very cool. We definitely got the 50s diner vibe. Our server came over and took our order. She had zero personality. There were no introductions and she kept the conversation to one word sentences. She treated us like she'd rather have us leave then stay an eat. We were friendly throughout the dining experience. We did notice that the server was very pleasant with the other staff and all the male patrons, calling them "hon" and asking them if they need anything else. She did not extend any of these courtesies to our table of two women. It was bizarre and completely ruined our final experience in St. Paul. The food was overly expensive for very so-so diner food. The sausage patties were dried out. The eggs were overcooked. The rest was just fine, but not worth the price of over $40 for two basic meals (during the early bird time period) and two coffees. Lastly, it seemed like the smoke from the flat top was vented, but there was a smell of old cooking oil lingering in the restaurant. The whole experience was not good. It was one of the worst dining experiences we've had, and we do not expect or require a lot. We make no alterations to our food and we're friendly diners and tip well. This was a huge disappointment.

Expansion locations of beloved local street food (or street food adjacent) establishments almost never quite capture the full glory of the original. I'm sure this place doesn't either, though it's been forever since I've been to the OG location. But, the food was very good, and the beef sandwich was at least close enough to the original to strongly conjure those memories. I snuck a bite of my three year old's plain hotdog and the flavor and quality were solid. The food is also a good value. I got take outs, so I didn't get the full service experience but their take out service was as good as it gets. They were proactive in serving me, made sure my order was right and that I was happy with it; that I had everything I needed in the bag, etc., and were friendly while they were at it. And the vibe is distinctly Chicago, not just on the surface level where they have a lot of Chicago themed decor (which is nice but any corporate operation can mass produce that) but also on the level of the wood, the lighting, the layout, and even the personality of the service, etc., which all felt plausibly Chicago. If you're in the area and looking for beef sandwiches and/or hot dogs, this is your spot.
