I like gold and have previously used Ralph Lauren's Ballroom Gold which I used to purchase at Home Depot. I couldn't find it and went to this place in the recommendation of my contractor. I agree with Ryan W. and his review. I had a similar customer service situation myself. They have a good selection of high end paints, but that is all there is to it at this store :( Customer service is pathetic at best :( I only went there coz I needed paint on a Sunday (most other paint stores are closed sundays). There was only 1 person working all day and, from the look of him, seemed to be at his wits end. He was extremely rude and short answering phone calls and did not show much enthusiasm helping people waiting in line. And, yes, a line there was waiting to be helped! I struck up a conversation with him and he immediately started complaining on how bad it was for him working sundays since it was always busy and how he was overworked! I think more business in this economy would be a blessing and I would roll out the red carpet for customers paying top dollars for paint and paint supplies! If I have a desire to be treated worse than cattle, woudl I not head to the nearest Home Depot instead????? We wanted to support a local business, but it was a mistake. First, there are no prices on anything. Second, C2 paint costs $60/gallon and is the WORST paint ever. Upon opening the can, I thought something was wrong with it because it wasn't mixed properly and went on clear on the wall. It was 3:30PM on a Saturday, and the store was already closed until Monday. I spent a long time hand mixing it, and it took three coats to make it look decent. However, 11 days after painting, if you touch the wall ever so gently with your hand or an object, it leaves a white mark. I also accidentally splashed some water on the wall, and the water stained the wall!! Also, we went into the store wearing masks, and many employees were wearing masks. They asked us to put on gloves while looking at paint samples, which was totally fine. But then when we had to check out, the guys at the register (the people you actually have to interact with) weren't wearing masks or gloves. So, high prices, terrible (possibly defective) paint, and in violation of Virginia's rule to wear masks indoors means I will not be shopping here again. Potomac Paint and Design is the best store hands down in the MD DC VA area to go for wallpaper books and advice on paint colors. Their design staff always friendly and helpful and not snobby or rude, which a lot of wallpaper stores can be. I've worked with Casey a lot in their Arlington location and she's always gone above and beyond. I've also always had a pleasant experience with the people working the paint side. I've probably purchased 50 gallons of paint over the years going back to when they had a chantilly store - that's how long I've been driving out of my way to patron Potomac paint and design. You just can't beat the expertise of people who've been in the paint business for years unlike the big box stores. read more

This is really a review of the customer service at Potomac Paint, since they largely carry Benjamin Moore paints - you can decide for yourself if the product is any good. But, I can tell you the service is not good. When we called ahead, the lady who answered the phone said she was too busy to talk to us. When I got there, I matched the response up with a snooty-looking young woman who worked in the "design" part of the store. It was near the end of the work day, and she telegraphed a "I'm about to leave, there's NO WAY I'm helping you 15 minutes before closing." The guy behind the counter was a little better, but he forgot one of my paint samples. Other customers in the store seemed to be getting limited customer service as well. I guess if you need Benjamin Moore paint, this is the place to go, but don't expect much. read more

They are open 7 days a week and have a color consultant available most of the time. If you're not sure of what color shade to choose or need some help deciding among several different colors, ask the consultant. She knows what questions to ask you and will guide you to a good choice. I just repainted the entire interior of my house and couldn't have done it without this help! And any of the people who work here can help you choose just the right type of paint with the proper amount of sheen....just ask. They will also match a color from a different brand of paint, or tint a given paint so it's darker or lighter but the same color as the original. I also thought the selection of brushes was great and was VERY happy with the Corona brand. These brushes held up to lots of trim painting and cleaned up very easily with soap and water. If can get busy there on weekends, so try during the week. This is just a super paint store! read more

I've had great customer service here both in the design area and paint area on weekends and after work on a weeknight. The designers helped me pick out colors that would work with my apartment and the man behind the counter recognizes me. Since I've been buying so much from them, he gives me a discount on paint which definitely helps since Benjamin Moore paint is on the pricey side. read more

I had excellent customer service here, and they carry paint you can't find at your hardware store/Home Depot, such as C2 and Fine Paints of Europe. I was only looking at paint for a small project, but the design staff was friendly and helpful, helping to match colors and getting samples for me. This was on a weekday afternoon, not too busy. When I was back a second time on a weekend to actually get the paint, they were really busy but no less friendly or helpful. The guy at the paint desk walked me around, getting me the right brush, roller, etc, told me I didn't need the extra tools I thought I did, was full of tips, and did this all quickly. Rudest people in the world. Bar none, the most unprofessional outfit in Arlington. A few weeks back I came in five times to buy seven different stain samples at $10 pop for deck stain. Finally selected four gallons and shelled out $241.55 for the pleasure. My painter, on the fly, tells me I need two more gallons. I put in the order, paying in cash ($123). The paint was at another store so Potomac Paint offers to drop the two gallons off @ my house (2 miles from the store). I voluntarily pay an extra $10 bucks for the driver. The store happily accepted. An hour later my painter says he doesn't need the Arbour stain (COTS paint, mind you). I call Potomac Paint, was told they would not refund. After a quick chat with the manager, was told "I like to keep my customers happy" and to come in for the refund. Great. Always a pleasure! But wait... I come in the next day to get the refund and was told by an associate that the Manager (Ramon) would like me to take my business elsewhere. Of course "Ramon" wasn't able to come out and tell me that himself. And of course, Ramon didn't give a refund for the voluntary extra I paid to compensate the driver to drive 2 miles to my house...even though the paint never even left the store. I've been a customer for years. Over the past three, I've spent almost $1,500 at Potomac Paint. So after spending $330 last week (to say nothing of the $500 I spent 2 years ago and another $600 in paint last year repainting my kitchen, family room, and master bedroom with paint purchased at Potomac Paint & Design Center). I was told they no longer want my business. Really? Because you voluntarily offered to allow me to return two gallons of paint I never received (let alone open) because the driver never even left the store to deliver them? You want to keep your customers happy, eh Ramon? WAFJ. Keep it classy, Potomac Paint. read more

The designers were very helpful in selecting colors. Their professionalism, unfortunately, did not extend to the paint purchasing process. The person was pushy and when I said I thought I'd email my contractor to get his opinion (and started to email), he became very rude and pushy: "why don't you trust me, why ask him. It's your house, you should decide yourself," etc. if you need Benjamin Moore paint, you may want to go elsewhere. read more

We used Potomac Paints for a color consultant for our new place and I could not recommend this place more. I think people should start off by looking at Houzz or Pinterest to find colors they like and then bring in a color consultant and let them choose the specific colors given your color preferences and your existing furnishings/paintings/floor/etc. This place has overpriced paint but Teri was a great color consultant. She really helped us choose some great colors that brought our whole house together. Thanks a lot! read more

HORRIBLE customer service. My wife and I used the onsite consulting service that this store provides (at a cost), and had a color consultant come to our new house and help us choose paint colors for the interior spaces. After choosing our colors, the consultant ended up writing down the wrong paint color codes, so when our painters went out to buy the paints, they bought the wrong ones. The ended up painting two large rooms in our home with the wrong paint before we came home from work and realized the mistake. The mistake ended up costing us over $600 between the new paint, the delay in the work, the increased cost of the painters extending their work by an additional day, the increased cost of the movers coming in and having to move furniture in around the painters who were still there fixing the wrong paint colors, and the maid service we had in to try and clean the place while the painters were still there. Upon getting an additional bill from the painters to cover their costs for having to re-do two rooms, I contacted the store to ask for a refund on at least paint costs (materials), if not a refund for the consulting service overall. Instead, the store offered to give us a gift certificate for 4 cans of paint (even though we had just finished painting the entire interior of our home) from a brand we didn't use anywhere in our home, that they only carry in their Chantilly store (we live in DC). Because their mistake cost us over $600, and they were unwilling to do anything other than give us some random paint we don't need, I have to say that we will pass on ever using this store for anything again. Unprofessional, sloppy service left us with a bill that was beyond anything we would ever have wanted to spend, especially when this service was meant to "help" us and expedite our paint decisions to get our home painted on schedule. I highly recommend looking for your paint and consulting services elsewhere. read more

We needed to match a special and unusual color for refinishing our kitchen cabinets. They were glad to help, and they took the time to match the color perfectly, an extended process since the paint has to dry some to see the final 'real' color. We were very pleased with the outcome, and we really appreciated their concerted effort to make us happy. read more

I have been buying Duron paints for years until they got bought out and the quality went down. I recently discovered Potomac Paint and Design Center and could not be happier.
