    Hazelnut Roasted Banana Choux
    Shonah M.

Hello new year 2024, new beginnings, new look, eating healthy food & going to the gym everyday ... hold up wait a sec ... nah! Hee. Gosh what can l say ... get the Hazelnut Roasted Banana Choux & the Milk Chocolate Passionfruit Cake. That's all you need in your life. Lucky me to have noticed a FTR post by local Yelpie Marge B. Because I was in Coquitlam for a new years eve celebration, I knew I better check out Pourquoi Pas, or I'd regret it big time. Absolutely no regrets - presentation & taste were absolutely on point = 10/10. PP is a tiny bakery with limited seating. Recommend take-out & going directly home with your goodies, cause they're very delicate. Located in a small strip mall 3mins from the massive Coquitlam Centre Mall, call ahead to check availability - the pastries will sell out. Staff are friendly & informative. Best wishes to y'all for 2024.

Great addition to the area. I work in the area always looking for good bakeries. I've been here before highly recommended by one of my clients. The pastries are amazing, buttery, and flaky everything you want in a French pastry, I've had double baked almond croissant ( a local fav for a reason ) the french onion pull apart was one of my fav which was recommended by the staff working. You cant go wrong with the classic butter croissant. The caramel coconut apricot danish was delish. You cant go wrong everything tasted yummy! The lady helping was also lovely and very patient with me. My second visit I received a gift card so I wanted to pick four pastries. The cafe is cozy has several seating inside and out. Located at a strip mall with plenty of parking. I haven't tried the coffee but I will next time.

St. Honore croissants This was so good! I loved the smooth and delicate cream in addition to the flavorful vanilla custard. My favourite thing about this was the croissant! I absolutely loved how buttery and flakey the croissant was. The only thing I didn't like was the sugar on top of the choux because I felt it tasted burnt but I am aware that it does have a deeper caramelized taste that I am just personally not a fan of. I would definitely come back to try some other pastries. the store is also soo cute despite being very small. They had limited seating inside and some tables outside as well but it's starting to get really cold so I don't recommend sitting outside as that is what my friend and i did. However! don't be concerned if you want to get takeout instead because their packaging is soooooo cute. this place is definitely a hidden gem in Coquitlam and a must visit!

Such a cute gem of a place in an unsuspecting area. It is small and cozy. The pastries and cakes are delicious.

I was pretty excited to finally get cakes from here, since it's my 3rd attempt (they're usually sold out of cakes)! I love their clean quaint storefront, with it's warmly lit interior and glass showcases of their pastries. Staff are friendly and not pushy at all, I took my time reading through all the descriptions before deciding what pieces to get. I got their Mont Blanc, hazelnut roasted banana choux, and a matcha black sesame cake slice ($7.85 each). Beautifully crafted cakes and aesthetically pleasing, the attention to detail is evident here. Our favorite was the matcha black sesame, as it had rich sesame flavor which paired well with the slightly bitter matcha. The cookie bottom added a nice texture and was delicious as well. The Mont Blanc had wonderful nutty flavors and overall well rounded. However, the chestnut on top was super hard and dry, it was difficult to chew. The chestnut cream also looked a bit dry, as if it had been sitting out for quite some time (I bought these around 2pm). Again, the cookie bottom was flakey and paired well with the cake. I was a quite disappointed with the choux because the flavors were a bit odd and the choux was soft (I expected a little crunch/flakiness). The hazelnut mousse was smooth, rich, and amazing--like having a Ferrero Rocher in mousse form. However, the candied banana was mushy and the slightly sour taste didn't pair well with the rest of the pastry. I hope to try the other pastries next time, maybe today was just a down day for them, since I see so many raving reviews and they sell out so often!

Well I took the fish shaped waffle off the soft serve and ate the sorbet with a spoon then took a bite out of my waffle fish! Apparently after watching everyone else around me, you're supposed to just bite the waffle while it sits atop the soft serve. Oh well I guess I'll have to come back and try it that way next time! The soft serve is very light and the flavours are delicate. The waffle is really yummy with a soft chew. It's a busy and popular spot filled with teens and twenty somethings. The lineup moves pretty quickly but seats are often taken. Tables don't get wiped down often as staff are busy making cones but you can always ask them to wipe it down for you. Great dessert place for something light and refreshing.

The hashbrown bites were nice and crispy. Their doughnuts all looked enticing, but I picked the wrong one. I chose creme brulee, which had a hard icing on top. It was crunchy, which did not go well with the pillowy soft doughnut. I peeled the entire top off, but enjoyed the vanilla filling. Although I didn't like this doughnut, I could tell it was freshly baked and I would return to try their other flavours. There was only 1 woman working in the cafe and she was so friendly. The shaved milk ice itself wasn't very saturated or creamy, and there was a lot of cocoa powder, which made it taste kind of dry overall. I didn't leave feeling super satisfied. That said, the service was great! The staff was really friendly and honest -- when I asked about the mango bingsoo, the person helping us let me know the mangos weren't ripe yet and might taste a bit tart, which I appreciated. Also, there's plenty of seating, so it's a nice place to hang out and chat without feeling rushed.

I felt like the two was basically the same with the exception one has greentea powder and the other had soybean powder. I find the shaved ice here a lot more dense and of course it makes it a lot more filling compared to bingsoo at other places. The greentea bingsoo was my favorite. It had a nice flavor. There are greentea powder in the middle of the dessert. The greentea cake on the side was not bad. It was also nothing special. I have a feeling they probably didn't make those cube cakes inhouse. The Injeolmi bingsoo is probably something that I won't order again. Don't get me wrong, it was not bad. I am just not big on rice cake. The powder on the Injeolmi bingsoo was quite interesting. It had a nice smoky flavor to it. Both bingsoo was topped with redbeans. In terms of decor, the place is nothing fancy. It has tables and chairs so you can definitely dine in. The place is also a bit hidden behind a bus stop. The place can easily be missed.

We were pleasantly surprised that they offer guests access to their full drink menu including their specials. Ube matcha was good, but had a hint of cinnamon which we could have gone without. The matcha mango was also good. The blackberry lavender matcha was too floral for our liking. However, eventually you get used to it and then it becomes more enjoyable. The pandesals were super fresh and we loved both the ube and strawberry butters that came with it. I wish that they came a bit warmer, so that the butters could have melted a touch. I thoroughly enjoyed all 3 sandwiches. I especially loved the arugula on the mozerella sandwich. The blackberry brie sandwich could have used a touch more brie, but was still delicious. The cheesecakes were good, but a bit too sweet. The strawberry was my favorite. I enjoyed tasting multiple flavors. Their red velvet cupcake was extremely moist. The pistachio malasada was cute and flavorful. The filling to pastry ratio was good. I think that the experience could have been better balanced if there were a few more savory items. One thing that we noticed was that all of the pastries including the malasada were cold. I can understand that there are some food safe requirements that need to be met in how desserts are stored. However, letting them sit out for even 20-30 minutes before consumption would have been better.
