    Hazelnut Roasted Banana Choux

Hello new year 2024, new beginnings, new look, eating healthy food & going to the gym everyday ... hold up wait a sec ... nah! Hee. Gosh what can l say ... get the Hazelnut Roasted Banana Choux & the Milk Chocolate Passionfruit Cake. That's all you need in your life. Lucky me to have noticed a FTR post by local Yelpie Marge B. Because I was in Coquitlam for a new years eve celebration, I knew I better check out Pourquoi Pas, or I'd regret it big time. Absolutely no regrets - presentation & taste were absolutely on point = 10/10. PP is a tiny bakery with limited seating. Recommend take-out & going directly home with your goodies, cause they're very delicate. Located in a small strip mall 3mins from the massive Coquitlam Centre Mall, call ahead to check availability - the pastries will sell out. Staff are friendly & informative. Best wishes to y'all for 2024.

Great addition to the area. I work in the area always looking for good bakeries. I've been here before highly recommended by one of my clients. The pastries are amazing, buttery, and flaky everything you want in a French pastry, I've had double baked almond croissant ( a local fav for a reason ) the french onion pull apart was one of my fav which was recommended by the staff working. You cant go wrong with the classic butter croissant. The caramel coconut apricot danish was delish. You cant go wrong everything tasted yummy! The lady helping was also lovely and very patient with me. My second visit I received a gift card so I wanted to pick four pastries. The cafe is cozy has several seating inside and out. Located at a strip mall with plenty of parking. I haven't tried the coffee but I will next time.

St. Honore croissants This was so good! I loved the smooth and delicate cream in addition to the flavorful vanilla custard. My favourite thing about this was the croissant! I absolutely loved how buttery and flakey the croissant was. The only thing I didn't like was the sugar on top of the choux because I felt it tasted burnt but I am aware that it does have a deeper caramelized taste that I am just personally not a fan of. I would definitely come back to try some other pastries. the store is also soo cute despite being very small. They had limited seating inside and some tables outside as well but it's starting to get really cold so I don't recommend sitting outside as that is what my friend and i did. However! don't be concerned if you want to get takeout instead because their packaging is soooooo cute. this place is definitely a hidden gem in Coquitlam and a must visit!

Such a cute gem of a place in an unsuspecting area. It is small and cozy. The pastries and cakes are delicious.

I was pretty excited to finally get cakes from here, since it's my 3rd attempt (they're usually sold out of cakes)! I love their clean quaint storefront, with it's warmly lit interior and glass showcases of their pastries. Staff are friendly and not pushy at all, I took my time reading through all the descriptions before deciding what pieces to get. I got their Mont Blanc, hazelnut roasted banana choux, and a matcha black sesame cake slice ($7.85 each). Beautifully crafted cakes and aesthetically pleasing, the attention to detail is evident here. Our favorite was the matcha black sesame, as it had rich sesame flavor which paired well with the slightly bitter matcha. The cookie bottom added a nice texture and was delicious as well. The Mont Blanc had wonderful nutty flavors and overall well rounded. However, the chestnut on top was super hard and dry, it was difficult to chew. The chestnut cream also looked a bit dry, as if it had been sitting out for quite some time (I bought these around 2pm). Again, the cookie bottom was flakey and paired well with the cake. I was a quite disappointed with the choux because the flavors were a bit odd and the choux was soft (I expected a little crunch/flakiness). The hazelnut mousse was smooth, rich, and amazing--like having a Ferrero Rocher in mousse form. However, the candied banana was mushy and the slightly sour taste didn't pair well with the rest of the pastry. I hope to try the other pastries next time, maybe today was just a down day for them, since I see so many raving reviews and they sell out so often!

I've long heard about Korean salt bread and had been wanting to try. Maison mori offered a couple of salt bread selections. I didn't know which to get so I asked for recommendations. The staff wasn't helpful at all. "They're all good." She also said the bread is Korean style bread that is popular in Korea. Then I asked why use the Japanese word for salt, i.e. "shio". She then responded that the bread is Japanese style. Like, which is it? Korean or Japanese? After consulting Gemini AI, the two styles are fundamentally the same but the texture is different. Regardless of Japanese or Korean style, I got the original and black (squid ink). I honestly don't see what the hype is. It's essentially just butter roll with salt sprinkled on top. Lol.

My favorite is Soboro chestnut cube, sweet potato cube, Shio pan, mugwort mochi bun, mochi mochi bread and roll cakes. Cube breads are excellent items. Dough is very soft and fillings are great, especially Soboro chestnut cube's small chestnut pieces and crunchy soboro topping makes it addictive. Shio pan is very buttery , one of the best in town. I also liked Mochi mochi bread which had very chewy texture like mochi, but this time, I felt the one I had in the past tasted better. However, Rich bread was very good. The dough is similar to brioche with very rich, buttery flavor. This one is definitely better than before. Overall, I really liked their products. Highly recommend if you have a chance to visit North road

Service is still good and my favourite baked goods still taste similar as before but in smaller portion now. That is the reality when we are facing inflation. One suggestion I told the serving clerk to perhaps put a sign to separate freshly baked ( such) cookies from days old products. I went there on a Tuesday morning around 10 am and I bought a pack of shortbread cookies. I took it to the car and my husband tried one right away and found the supposedly crisp cookies were quite soft. He said these were not freshly baked. So I went right back to the bakery and told them what my husband said. The manager agreed to give me back the refund and the serving clerk told me the fresh cookies will be ready in late afternoon and the one I bought was baked over the weekend. I believe it is important for the bakery to separate the daily baked fresh products from the rest.

The stop at the bakery had been placed high on my to-do shopping list, and provided the opportunity for daughter and I to browse, and get a good first look inside the bakery, and check out the various products. Plus, at this time, it was a very special stop as well -- I was seeking some treats for Mom's birthday. We had a great look around - with the wonderful sights and aromas really tickling our senses! I purchased an 'Apricot Torte' (colourfully-decorated, white cake, with an apricot brandy flavouring), and a 'Blueberry Ring' (so appealing, large, 'fruity' pastry). Service was friendly and cordial, and the bakery products nicely-displayed and reasonably priced. 'Mundy Park Bakery' provided some great-looking bakery goodies to celebrate my lady's birthday 'weekend'. Looking forward to the first unveilings, and tastes coming up later today! p.s. Sorry to bakery for my mis-spelling of the bakery's name in my first review.

This is regarding the racist behaviour of the bald one. Before I get gaslit, this happened to myself and my friend and we are both people of colour. I lined up first, a white woman came in while I was already in line, instead of taking my order he looked straight at her and helped her. The lady turned to me to check if it was ok and I said yes because I gave the bald one the benefit of doubt. He then takes her order then leaves. Whatever, I get helped by the other guy a minute later. After 10 mins, my friend goes up to order, she is in line when another white woman walks in. Instead of taking my friend's order, he skips her and helps the white woman who sounded surprised (clearly my friend was ahead of her). Don't know what to make it this as it happened to us both and we are both visible minorities. It can't be a coincidence. I've worked as cashier for years and you can always see/get a feel of the line (mind you the line had max 4 ppl at peak) so it shouldn't have been a coincidence to skip us so blatantly both at different times. The pastries tasted sour by the end when we both recollected how we were treated. Racism is well and alive I guess, no matter how subtle. If you have melanated skin, beware.

Unfortunately, its quite hard to find marzipan in the lower mainland. So you can imagine that I was quite excited when I saw they had one on the menu. At first glance the chocolate drizzle on top looked too little, but it was just the right amount. The all butter croissant was perfectly flaky. I heated mine up in the toaster oven for a few mins. The amount of filling that was inside amazed me. However, it would have been more enjoyable if it was more spread out, instead of a "log" of filling. Also, after warming up the pastry, the bottom was extremely oily. So oily that it was literally dripping. The meringue on the Lemon Meringue Bar was a bit deflated and dry. The lemon flavor wasn't overly powerful. The Mango Bar, mango flavor was very mild. I would have liked to taste something a bit more prominent. Also, I didnt like thay they added so much sugar to the Graham Cracker crust. The Spumoni Bar tasted mostly of coconut, but the bar was super flavorful and tasty. The Cheesy Bar cheesecake texture was nice and light. The Fruity Bar was very tasty. Although I wouldn't say that it tasted like strawberry. I liked the crunchy texture from the white chocolate covered rice krispies. I liked the Matcha it could have used a touch more matcha, but I know not everyone likes a super strong matcha flavor. My top picks would be SpumoniBar, Matcha, and Fruity Bar. However, I feel that all of the bars could use more flavor. Additionally, I would like to note the fantastic customer service that I received. I had a dog with me and she has major separation anxiety. One of the staff members noticed us and was kind enough to offer to watch the dog while I quickly ordered inside. I would rate the croissants 4.5 stars, the bars 3.8 stars and the customer service 5 stars.
