This fast-casual book on H St is small, with limited seating (mostly counterside high top stools) but the food is hugely good. I've never had fries like the trolley fries before -- topped with kimchi and a mayo sauce and dried seaweed. It sounds quirky but all the flavors work so well together. But they're most famous for their giant egg roll, which is as thick as an arm and exactly the kind of greasy food you're craving when you order an egg roll. It's listed as a starter but it's really a whole meal. The General's Chicken imitates the original so well, but my favorite entree is the Natalie Porkman, and not just for the bad pun. It's crispy and crunchy like fried chicken should be, with just enough sweet & sour sauce. And the Taiwanese fried cheese balls are as decadent as they sound. They also usually have a few rotating specials. Basically, I've never had anything bad here. I'm sure if Pow Pow were located somewhere more central, it'd have an even bigger cult following. Vegan Paradise full of flavor! I'm so glad Pow Pow went Vegan all the way since May with a variety of hearty dishes. Love the Yoda Bowl! The Yoda Bowl is loaded with veggies with crunchy sriracha cashews that adds a nice kick, hearty grilled chicken mock meat coated in savory peanut sauce, and drizzle of creamy zesty cucumber lime sauce. Although I appreciate the variety of ingredients, the tomatoes and carrots didn't blend well together with black beans, edamame and the rice quinoa mix. I think mushrooms, broccoli, or corn would have been a better pairing. There's a seasonal bowl similar to the Yoda bowl, but with sweet potato instead of the mock meat, which I would try next time! My meat-loving husband loved the crispy fried fingers smothered in sauce. I got 1/2 with the traditional firecracker sauce which is like a tangy buffalo sauce and other 1/2 with teriyaki sauce. I honestly couldn't taste the difference between the sauces. The only difference I could taste were the plain vs black sesame seeds. I enjoyed the sesame sauce. As the fried mock meat was doused in sauce, it had a very bold flavor that overpowered the Yoda Bowl. I love wings coated in sauce, but not to the point that the wings are swimming in sauce and leave little puddles as I pick them up. I recommend getting the sauce on the side. I wasn't a fan of the Trolley Fries. I wanted to love the fries as they were loaded with my favorite ingredients (sriracha mayo, kimichi, scallians, ketchup), but the fries weren't crispy and lukewarm. Also the toppings were a bit of overload and sadly I ended up tossing out the entire tray of fries after a few bites. Plenty of great choices and fun to try. Headed to the H Street Corridor for the day & thanks to my fellow Yelpers, Pow Pow became my destination for Vegan Food. & ooohhh my goodness, what a palatable experience. This neighborhood's gem offers a creative & healthy Asian twist of food that caters to Vegans, Vegetarians & Carnivores alike. All with all-natural products, some from local farms gearing towards food sensitivities. The menu is split into two sections, Starters & Bowls - Salads, a Today's Specials on display & dedicated Kids' menu. Sharkey was the one man show as he shared insight with the customers while preparing the orders simultaneously in a flowy, foodie fashion. I started off with the Little Tiger side salad that was full of fresh greens, pickled carrots & croutons made out of a Japanese spice mixture. The accompanying Miso dressing had a tasty twist to it. From the Today's Specials, I ordered the small portion of Mock Chicken Fingers (6 pieces) that were battered, seasoned & flash fried perfectly. It comes with a Sesame Dressing that replicates a Ranch Dressing. I got an additional side of General Tso sauce that paired just as well as I alternated between the two dipping sauces. I also ordered the Disco Stick Egg Roll with Mock Chicken & Pineapple Kimichi, it was so delicious I was dancing in my seat & humming disco tunes to myself. & talk about preparation of huge portions, 1/2 of the Egg Roll filled me up easily. The pineapple Hoisin Sauce is good, yet the Egg Roll is just as good without. To note, my side salad that is normally $4, cost only $2 as a side order to the Disco Stick Egg Rolls. I rounded out my meal with a Maine Root Soda - Ginger Brew. Although I didn't order a bowl this visit, the variations are many with names such as Natalie Porkman & Peoples Republic of Creaser providing you with an entertainment aspect while ordering & enjoying your food. As of late, I avoid all things soy based but misunderstood their "plant based" foods to be like the impossible meat, let me tell you it is not. It's definitely soy based, jokes on me lol. Anyway, the food was really good my first visit. I had the ginger miso soup to start and the generals chicken as my entree, both were very flavorful. I love the contrast of greens and grains in the generals chicken bowl. My second visit I had the firecracker fingers and instantly could tell it was soy based, gross. For my entree I had the Natalie Porkman and it was meh, after I hit a J it definitely tasted better but we all get why that was. The service I received both times was attentive and very nice. This restaurant is near the Atlas Theater on H Street. The entrance is easy to miss. It is on the corner of the block. The food is delicious. I attended a Yelp event and have tried most of the menu. I wanted Trolly Fries and mock meatballs with "cheese" today. The fries have an amazing flavor alone, but when you add kimchi & k-town ketchup (along with other yummy spices), you have an amazing dish that is hard to share with anyone. I was drawn to visit this place because it's done something rather unique. It used to be a conventional restaurant that offered vegetarian/vegan options, but it has reinvented itself in 100% vegan form. More than most places, trying to read reviews for this one confused me; opinions here are decidedly mixed, and the place has clearly undergone a lot of change over time. My experience, however, was positive. I got a bowl in under five minutes, and I couldn't even tell you all of what was in it. The place is supposedly "Asian", but had no theme that I could discern. Nonetheless, my purple-ish rice and quinoa with black beans, soy beans, and some sort of fake chicken was remarkably substantial. The sauces carried numerous notes; some bites were spicy, others cool and sweet. It seemed like something that shouldn't work, but at the end I was quite satisfied and for a good price. For a fast casual type of place, they're fast but not overly customizable; if I went back I'd ask how much they're willing to alter the bowls to taste. I also wish they didn't use so much fake meat; real food is generally healthier. But while I waffle on the rating a bit, I'm really quite impressed that they seem to be making it here as a 100% plant-based business. I was by no means the only person there. I can only hope the DC area food scene hits the point where I can start comparing the culinary merits of vegetarian fast-but-fancy restaurants critically. We're getting there. read more

Great fast food concept which got me thinking about how "Bowls" are just an Asian way of eating (mixing rice or noodles with acoutrements) which is finally transforming the standard Euro-American plate where meat/starch/vegetables are served separately and distinctly on a plate. If the success of the bowl concept is any indication, that old-American plate is going the way of coal mines and Kodak film. For example here's the Purity bowl: the greens (with some herbs for pique) are tossed in a light citrus dressing, then piled on with a mix of rice/quinoa/black beans (heartily flavored with toasted coconut oil base). Then on top, they mix in roasted broccoli and sweet potato, and for crunch toss on decadent cashew nuts roasted with a mix of sriracha and sesame, and some edamame. Then slather on a sesame/tahini based dressing and toasted seeds. Yes, the MIX is here to stay, because it's nutritious and tasty! Prices are around $10 and you can get a slightly smaller bowl for less than that. I couldn't finish my bowl so there's enough food there for a snack later on! The shop, like most of H-Street's establishments, has a big Instagram presence that belies their modest hole-in-the-wall reality. The inside is craftily decorated with Asian dragon mural and signs that playfully pass the store off as a Tokyo metro station. Quite fun, loungy, electronic tunes. I ordered the General Tso Chicken meal and it was spectacular. It was packed with flavor and left me more than satisfied. It came with veggies, a rice medley and salad which added to the heartiness of this meal. I'll also add that what's pictured is a small. The large could probably feed two people. I was bummed that I couldn't try the vegan mozzarella bites but was delighted to know that they're made fresh daily and in limited quantities. They won't turn the music down/ you can't speak to anyone with it that loud- when I emailed the contact the staff pointed to on the wall, they responded the music level was fine- per staff- so clearly the feedback of patrons is not of interest. The process to self- order takes Forever- especially if it is your first visit. Staff are making food and there was no one for me to ask questions of. I got one of the bowls- it was way too spicy so I trashed it. I won't be back since they seem to just want to toss out food with no interest in helping patrons understand the menu, nor interest in speaking to us or being responsive to requests about the very loud music. I think this dish is perfect and the flavors are flawless. Even the rice is fantastic. This is my go to when it's on the menu along with the fried cheese balls (which aren't cheese and I'm sure they have a much better name than what I call them). This place is highly recommended. My only Con is the fact that sometimes the Natalie Porkman is not on the menu, but luckily you can check online prior to trekking across town.
