The good: I called in around 9:30 in the morning to ask if they had any appointments for a smog check that same day. They had an appointment for the time I needed which was perfect. When I got there the woman at the front desk was very friendly, they got me set up quickly and the test only took about ten minutes. The test came back saying I had failed, they gave me all the information I needed to take care of it, did not charge me for the smog certificate (but obviously charged me for the test) and said once the problem was fixed to bring it back and they would give me a discount on the retest. I was bummed that I failed, but happy with the service as I left, and fully planned on coming back to them again. The bad: The next morning I took the car in to my regular mechanic (who is absolutely amazing, best service ever!) and explained the situation. My check engine light was on in the car (which it had been when I took it to get smogged, but it had been checked out recently and there was nothing wrong with the engine). The first question he asked was who did the smog and I told him. He said he absolutely hates these guys, because he has gotten complaints from other customers about this happening all the time. He said any smog station with decent business practices, will not perform a smog test if they see a check engine light when they start the car. Poway Smog saw the check engine light, knew it would not pass smog, and did the test anyway so that they could still charge me the $50+ for performing the test. Granted, I should have done my research and found out that the car would not smog with a check engine light on, I though since the light was a fluke (meaning nothing actually wrong with my car) it would still pass smog. I just think it's a terrible business practice to do smog test on vehicles they know off the bat will not pass. Lesson learned, and I will never use their services again. read more

Allow me to relay a story of today's experience with Edith from Poway Smog. With my Pennysaver coupon for Poway Accurate Automotive (PAA), which gave me a discounted price of $30, I proceeded to search for PAA, but because it had been a little time since my last visit, I had forgotten where they were located. Thinking I had found the place, I parked in front of a smog place, but there was no PAA signage. As I parked, a lady, who I found out was named Edith, came out the door and motioned me into an open bay of the business. I asked Edith if her business was Poway Accurate Automotive and she replied it wasn't. Edith stated, "We take business from them all the time." I asked Edith if she honors competitor's coupons to which she said "No", but that she would give me a good price. She even said that PAA doesn't really charge $30 and I replied that I've used this same coupon with PAA in the past. She told me that she charges $48, so I said "No thanks" and quickly exited her business to find PAA. I have zero tolerance for people with no integrity and you should too. PAA is one driveway before Poway Smog and they are located next to a U-Haul business. PAA's tagline is "We are honest, have integrity and will do only necessary repairs." Talk to Bryan or his father, who are respectful and seem like good guys. I personally can attest that these guys have strong integrity. Edith from Poway Smog, shame on you for bad mouthing an honest business trying to make an honest buck. Yelpers who have to renew their car registration by having to do a smog check, a business that employs people with no integrity should make you reluctant to spend your hard earned money. For a fast, professional, and most of all, high integrity business, Poway Accurate Automotive should be your automotive needs destination. read more

Too bad about previous comments regarding the check engine lights. This is the place I take most of my family members cars to get smogged at. They've all passed. My moms car wasn't idling right one time when I took it and they said they weren't able to test it because of the rough idle and wasn't charged. Got the car checked out and fixed by our mobile mechanic Roger and he fixed the issue. Turned out the valve cover gasket was leaky and oil was getting on the coil packs and plugs and they all needed replacing. After doing that. I took her car back and her car passed. The lady that works the desk is very courteous and I've gone there without an appointment more than once. I've also taken my car that I've been working on to get smogged recently. I did a motor swap to a newer engine and also did a automatic to manual transmission conversion and they checked out the motor out first and didn't want to test and referred me to take it to the California Referee first and get it smogged there since it's a newer engine and that the Ref will put a sticker stating the new specs to test the motor by. The people here have always been honest with me and the are fast too. I'm always in and out of that place within 10-15 minutes with certificate electronicly filed or in hand. I also usually let my car still run while getting the paperwork filled out before they load it on the dyno. Sometimes they tell you this because it's always good to run you car hot before smogging your car. read more

Have been coming here every single time the DMV asks for a star certification smog for years. Go online and get their coupon to get the best deal. No appointment needed and you can walk in and expect to be out of there in no time flat. At the time of this review, the coupon was for $40 for the smog check and $8 for the certificate print out and I walked out the door in 20 minutes. They have cold water in the office and are always happy to see a return customer whenever they look up my license plate! read more

In and out in less than 5 minutes. Quick and efficient. No appointment needed. They say they send the paperwork directly to the DMV. I guess i'll find that out when I pay for my tags. Never sent my smog check to the DMV. When I brought the receipt to the DMV they said it was not star certified. Very disappointed since I ended up getting a ticket for not having registration sticker. I was also specifically sent here by another station because it was supposed to be star certified. As I was waiting, another customer came in who happened to be a car dealer and I was informed that I would have to wait until they serviced him despite me coming in 5 minutes earlier. This was the quickest and easiest smog check of my life. I got there a couple minutes before they opened on a Sunday. Bobby had just finished up with someone else and told me all he needed was the keys. I let him know that I just wanted to grab a book out of the front seat and he said I wouldn't need it cause it would only take five minutes. Used to bring my cars here, then my golf failed smog. They told me it was a bad CAT. So I had the CAT replaced, it failed again. Fixed intake vacuum leak, brought it back in and it failed a third time. Tech got cranky and told me he was done with my car, he refused to test it again "until an actual repair shop does work on it." No if these had been free retests, I could understand the issue, but I was paying for these. Edith is great and very understanding, but they have good techs and bad techs working here and you never know which one your getting. Now I drive a little farther down Poway Road to Poway Smog Station, smart, knowledgable techs who talk to you, not at you. I was recommended to poway smog from a friend. I was very impressed with the female I scheduled a time with- I discussed the fact the my 02 BMW check engine light was on and that I was anticipating a fail. She informed me of the cap program. However, when I arrived, I was greeted by another person.. A gentleman who said I was misinformed about the program. That wasn't much of an issue. However, I was very disappointed in the man's lack of assistance. It was obvious that I was confused because I was told two different things. He seemed agitated as I was trying to decide what my next step was and brushed me to the side to help someone else. I didn't get his name, but definitely not a very courteous person. Smog checks are not my specialty, and I would have appreciated some help. I left very upset. read more

My family and I recently relocated to the area from Virginia. We had an appointment in advance and when we arrived, we were immediately attended to. The smog check took only minutes and the staff was very friendly. What really made the experience amazing was that there was cold water to drink while waiting and books to entertain the kids.
