Scores a strong 3.9 Great area to explore. Trails are varied and naturally inspired. And the benefit.that it links to other trails , makes this a system of parks that is inspiring and challenging.

Surprised I never shared this but it's been sitting in an old account. Been coming here for over 20 years now. Here's one time a baby mountain lion crossed my path right in front of me (July 28, 2017). Then as it walked away it looked at me one more time where then I took this photo. You'll see other animals here and there but in that moment I literally was in awe*. It had such beautiful yet intense eyes. Such great trails in this area.

It's been a while since I did this hike, but oh my. It's so hot. A lady passed me saying good morning, and I was taken aback. Maybe I shouldn't have pulled an all-nighter? It's so hot! There's a lot of dry shrubbery, so I guess I'll have to wait until it rains again to see some green. I know some people maintain the trails here but I feel like it's been some time since anyone whacked the bushes. I felt like there were a lot of cars parked in the lot, but didn't really see a lot of people on the trail. However, for the first time I saw a little snake and two deer near the entrance. I love seeing the wildlife. There is some shade along the trail the further you go in, but it is still very dry. I do regret not bringing water, but then again, where would I go empty myself. I wish there was a restroom here... But anyway, it was quite brutal. I was ill-prepared because I sometimes get lost on this hike, so thank the heavens it was daytime. I tried running down parts of it, and the shady, breezy portions were so worth it.

My cousins live 9 minutes away from this trail, and my aunt suggested it. It was a beautiful day, and not too hard of a hike at all! We stayed on the main trail, and it took about an hour to get to the peak. There were cool plants all around and many other hikers who were very friendly. If you are in the area I suggest this hike! I do wish there was a creek or something because I love nature trails with some water element, but it is an easy trail to hike with the family!

This hike was on par!!! Loved the views, the trail was good and it wasn't too crazy for amateur hikers yet not too easy for us experienced hikers. We went at a great time because the leaves had changed colors and it was gorgeous Fall foliage. And it was a bit windy that day so seeing the leaves fall was so peaceful. As we hiked up a bit we got to a point where you could see Pacific Palms hotel. And a lovely view of the 60 freeway and north. But before that, if you miss a turn you end up by stables and that would lead you to Schabarum park - which means we took the wrong path. There was some parts of this hike which had nice shade but I'm sure in the summer it gets hot.

This is the first place dog dad took me and our baby hiking--it's my favorite trail, due to proximity and the shaded areas, but also my least favorite, because dodging the different sizes of poop is always interesting with our curious pup (horses, dogs, and miscellaneous wild animals?). There are various entrances (along with a parking lot), but we prefer street parking on Fullerton Road and entering via that trailhead. This place has an abundance of trails/routes, so you can really pick the difficulty you want for the day (there's a pretty horrific lookin' one that goes straight up the mountainside--not my thing with my fear of heights). We usually take a nice easy path that offers roughly 50% shade time for the little guy, and it gives us a chance to work with him on ignoring other people, cyclists, children, dogs, horses, and piles of poop (training is a lifestyle, and he's a work in progress). This place is absolutely gorgeous in every season, and it's my favorite thing to watch the seasons change throughout the landscape. You should keep an eye out for coyotes though--one of them followed us for 1/5 of our hike one time (around 9 AM), and we couldn't decide if he wanted to demonstrate his own great walking skills to Mochi or if our baby looked like a great mid-day snack.

We decided to go for a hike on a breezy Saturday morning, Upon looking we noticed that Powder canyon was a short drive away. Power canyon is located in the la Habra heights area. Parking can be a little tricky, I just happened to get lucky the day we went. I wouldn't recommend dogs on this trail because when we were coming down one of the hills and spotted a coyote. It was in the middle of the day, so little creepy for our little fur babies. The hike itself was easy. Definitely recommend going in the early morning or on a cool day, there is little to no shade so the heat can get to you. It was probably a half mile straight up and multiple trails that lead you to different parts of the mountain. Due to the prior said coyote, the trail was cut short and we were forced to take another route. We actually found our way to a park, the path to go back took quite a while, possibly a mile and a half to get back to our cars. Over all it was an ok hike but there was a lot of trash and empty beer cans and hardly anything to look at, a lot of the trees were burned down.

Nice location for hiking with low traffic. Good for equestrians, pedestrians and cyclists alike. Convenient parking lot as well.

This is my favorite place in the whole world and I go here almost every day. I get here from my backyard but I've met lots of other people who get here from Schabarum Park or a trail head off of Fullerton Road. I know this because they get lost and ask my humans how to get back. If this happens to you, just keep in mind that the main fire road/trail goes east-west perpendicular between Fullerton Rd. and Hacienda Blvd. so use the sun as your guide. I know this trick because I'm always looking for shade to cool my paws and I notice how it shifts all day. So the trails are awesome! There is a fire road that loops around to view the San Gabriel Valley to the north and the LA Basin and OC to the west and south. My humans like to say, "look at Catalina and the ships - it's so clear today!" But all I know is there are lots of lizards. I chase them. Once I got one but its tail came off in my mouth and it ran away. I'm still a little freaked out about that experience. Speaking of lizards, at the tippy top of the hill on the north loop overlooking the SGV, you can climb behind the trees and there's this awesome shady area with a big log to sit on. My humans like to find lizards here and watch them drink water out of tiny cups. I don't get it but I thought it was worth mentioning. If you're walking up from Schabarum there are a few other areas right off the path to climb on logs and trees. This is a peaceful place where the endorphins flow from the hike, you can clear your mind, and relieve stress. Not that I have stress because I'm a fun-loving pupper. Check out the pics.

Black Walnut trees provide a delightful contrast to light tan soil on the trail. You can choose to "ruff it" and drive "on the gravel" to corral then hike to Schabarum Park (and stables). Like it quick and dirty? If yes then take the Black Walnut trail and 1 mile of non-stop climbing. Back and forth is 5 miles and offers decent views of Rowland Heights to La Puente. Lupin grows wild and mule deer were spotted on the last hike. Dogs on leash are permitted. Powder Canyon Trail is the "take it easy" route if you are into that of course. Solitary on weekdays and lively groups on weekends here along with horseback riding. Trails are good for joggers, mountain bikers and hiking. Water is available. If you are up for a climbing challenge, then tackle the "Purple Sage Trail." Scenic! Map is here: http://www.habitatauthority.org/trails/

What a hike. I don't know if it was the elevation gain or the temperature on the summer Saturday in which I hiked this trail but whew wee I was happy to get back to my air conditioned car. We found Powder Canyon from modernhiker.com and followed the hiking guide. All in all it was about 5 miles round trip with a 919 feet elevation gain. It's neat that the trail is a loop, part of it in the Puente Hills Habitat Authority lands and part of it in Los Angeles County's Peter F. Schabarum Regional Park. The trail is well marked and we did not run in to any mountain lions, snakes, or any wildlife really - and that is A-OK with me!!! The views were beautiful and it was neat we were able to hike in and around the canyon. The best views - in my opinion - were overlooking the city and up near the phone line towers. Another highlight were the equestrian stables randomly situated in the middle of the park. I think there are other places to hike that are a bit cooler but if you're specifically looking for a hike in this area, then it's a good one for you!

LOVE this trail for a number of reasons. pros: - local to me. less than ten minute drive from me - multiple trails, you can tailor your hike to be as strenuous or as easy as you want, or as long or as short as you want - plenty of parking on the street, as well as at the entrance - nice mix of shade along some parts of the trail - plenty of wildlife - squirrels, birds, deer, snakes - variety of hills you could go up (work out those gluts!) - dog friendly - main trails are wide - trails good for dogs, horses, humans, and bikers cons: - irresponsible dog owners - please PICK UP YOUR POOCH'S POOP! - no trashcans along the trail, only one near the parking lot or in schabarum park *tip* try to wear layers. while it does get hot in the sun, in some of the valleys there is a very definite cold breeze that can be very chilly. would i come again? YES

First time I hiked here, I parked on Fullerton Rd. and walked from there on Powder Canyon Trail. Then I saw there was a parking lot inside! You can hike from Fullerton Rd, Black Walnut Trail also starts there. Power Canyon trail is a little difficult to drive on. If you're a map person like me, this is a good map to look at or print out. http://www.habitatauthority.org/newsite/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/map-Powder-Canyon-2012.pdf Powder Canyon merges with Schabarum Park somewhat. The first time I hiked Powder Canyon I ended up hiking Schabarum Park trails as well. You can try starting at Powder Canyon trail (some shade, some exposed, sometimes even deer!), take Purple Sage up (check the trail markers, bit of an incline/good workout), meet up with Schabarum Trail and take it back to Powder Canyon Trail. Powder Canyon is relatively easy trail. Not too long, not too complicated. What I like best is how uncrowded it is. The people that do go are usually solo or in small groups, older, usually Asian. Sometimes I can go for 30 minutes without seeing another soul. It's a good hike if you need some alone time or peace and quiet. The only animals I've seen are rattlesnakes on super hot days or deer. I've yet to see any other animals. The trails are wide and well maintained. For the most part Powder Canyon is exposed so come early or late, and bring a hat and water.

Great area to hike with clear signage and ample trails. Some of these hills will jack you up but that's a good thing.

Right now the cherry blossoms are in full, breathtaking bloom, turning parts of the park into a dreamy pink wonderland. The wildlife is thriving too: squirrels galore that are so bold they'll walk right up to your feet if you sit still and stay calm. On warmer days I've spotted rattlesnakes scurrying across the trails, so I always recommend staying in the middle of the paths as a safety precaution. From the main entrance at Colima Road, you can choose the paved walkway or head straight for the dirt trails depending on your mood. I usually make my way toward the horse stables and equestrian area -- watching the horses get fed or running around their enclosures is one of my favorite parts. Just be mindful of the occasional big mounds of horse droppings on the trails; it's a small price to pay for the beauty. The park is generally very clean, with plenty of trash cans scattered throughout. There are numerous benches, picnic areas, fire pits perfect for groups, a children's playground, and even a seasonal creek with several charming wooden bridges crossing directly over it (though the water is pretty dry now that the rainy season is over). You'll also notice signs posted along the trails warning about bobcats and mountain lions. I've been coming here regularly for six months and haven't heard or seen any myself, but I've seen quite a few hikers carrying pepper spray as a precaution. Just be safe out there. Weekends get busy with families celebrating birthdays and enjoying the outdoors, but it's all part of the lively atmosphere. For dog lovers, there are two fantastic off-leash dog parks right near the front entrance -- one for large dogs and one for medium/small dogs. Outside of those areas, dogs must be on leash per the signs. The hilltop trails offer absolutely stunning panoramic views that make every visit worthwhile. My only heads-up: the park is officially closed on Mondays and Tuesdays (per LA County rules), but a lot of locals park across the street at the nearby mall and walk in through the gates anyway. If you're in the Rowland Heights/Hacienda Heights area and looking for a beautiful regional park with trails, nature, horses, cherry blossoms, and those lovely wooden bridges over the creek, I highly recommend Schabarum. Just bring water, wear good shoes, keep an eye out for those snakes in the summer, and stay aware on the trails! 5/5 -- I'll definitely be back soon.
