My husband and have lived in the vicinity for 30 years; back in the 90's we got a distinct "ick" feeling at this place, so we stopped buying liquor here. The ownership or management must have changed in recent years, because the store has a much better aura now, and is our default liquor store. They added parking in the adjacent lot, that helped quite a bit, too. read more

Hey, if you're into this sort of thing, I know for a fact that this liquor store has discounted eggnog and other Christmas-ish spiced spirits for sale near the registers at the moment. I did not check the prices but I'd be willing to bet that the cost is reduced because those holiday hard alcohols are disgusting. They want to get rid of them. They want those nostalgia flavors settling unhappily in your tummies so they can push that inventory out of the way and sell real liquor. Not much else to say. If you happen to be near the FoPo corridor and need a pick me up on the way to my house - and trust, you do - then this is more convenient than the store on Hawthorne and has slightly more parking. Maybe you'll get to see the dancers from Devils Point or DV8 on their off hours! I have no conclusive evidence of this. Just my hopes and dreams. read more

This liquor store is actually coming up a bit. It used to have just a basic big-brands selection. While it won't be your one-stop shopping for rare and exquisite spirits, they are starting to carry a diverse selection of stuff I'm usually looking for like locals New Deal, House, Lovejoy, Highball and similar options as well as the full compliment of Campari, Fernet and Aperol, which seems to be more available at lots of stores these days. It's cleaner than you'd expect for being on the edge of FoPo, but that neighborhood is cleaning itself up well these days anyway. This is actually a surprisingly un-ghetto liquor store, and I think that's why the booze is all out on shelves instead of behind the counter, so you can shop with your hands instead of having to squint and point. That, combined with the lack of ghetto, and the decent selection make this a 4-star liquor store. read more

Ok store, typically go there since I live in the hood. Today, 9/30/18 stopped in at about 10:20 a.m. got what I wanted and went to the counter. This overly thin goth looking girl comes up to the counter and she immediately seemed pissed to help me. She was short and rude, asked for my card and then literally threw it back to me and it landed on the floor. Gave me a very insincere apology and a very fake have a good day. I was nothing but polite. She was obviously judging me on my appearance, groomed and bathed. Will probably not return. Start going to Hawthorne. Mgmt needs to take action. read more

Stopped in at 7:55 this past FRIDAY night to grab some liquor and was not aware they closed at 8. An employee popped out of the outside door and rudely said "you better hurry up". Once inside, almost all of the lights were off and another woman was standing at the door holding a key and said "you have two minutes". Another customer walked in and the woman with the key yelled at him saying " I was literally just about to lock the door". I understand that it was very close to closing time but if you don't want to assist customers then you should turn off the neon open sign so people do not come in. I will drive out of my way just to support this establishment. They are family owned and very kind. The staff is always knowledgeable, patient, helpful and kind. I always see a familiar face when I go in there. I especially love getting gifts here for people. They have a fantastic selection, weekly sales and the newest drinks to hit the market. They are especially great about stocking and selling local Spirits. There is extra parking next to their small lot. Stock up on party and gift needs here. read more

Powell liquor has the feel of the "neighborhood" store as well as its my home store for a couple of years now. They have a pretty good variety of products and so convenient for me to shop at. The customer service is great with the exception of one employee. Every time I'm shopping in there, and this employee is working I have received terrible customer service. But, that one employee that is the first one to be greeted by, there's her. I'm not sure of her name, she's fairly tall and slender and dresses goth like. You can feel her negative vibes when first entering this establishment. She has been rude and disrespectful Every time I'm in there. I often observe her actions with other customers, to see if she acts rude and disrespectful to just me or other customers as well. Well, for the most part, she treats every person disrespectful. She acts as though she hates her job and hates people. So, why is she working in the Customer Service industry. I've worked and supervised the customer service industry for 15-20 years. There is no way I would allow an employee treating customers disrespectfully. It would affect my business. When I'm out and about, I try to make a point to shop at other stores like; Hawthorne, Sandy, Oak grove to mention a few good ones. But, I want to feel welcomed at Powell Liquor, it is my home store. My question is, why hasn't the owner taken notice of this issue and resolved it. The store is at a great location, but how many customers don't return there because of this one bad apple. Staff is professional and friendly, prices and selection are decent for the small size. Parking can be a pain. I recommend parking in the gravel parking lot next door when it's busy. You guys should post your hours in more places. read more

Staff are invariably helpful and polite, ready to offer suggestions or answer questions. I don't have very specific needs, but I've always found what I'm looking for, too. E.g. a search for cherry liqueur turned up several different brands of cherry liqueur, including one produced in Portland by Clear Creek Distillery. read more

They are close to where we live, the staff is always incredibly friendly but not overly nosy if you're just browsing (I hate when places ask you too many times if they can help you, it feels like they just want to get you out...) They have a great supply of variety that I love, plus really good mixers and drink making tools. I mean, theres not really an elaborate review I can give, I like them, they have normal, decent prices (not jacked up to pay rent), and they have good service. Let's just say the customer service has been inconsistent.

Pretty decent selection of whiskies and rum. I don't care about anything else, but it appears that they have lots of vodka and some other stuff that other people probably like. Staff is friendly enough and stays out of your way. It can get pretty crowded before drinking holidays, so shop ahead a little. Around Christmas they usually have gift packs with glasses or some other bonus that are a pretty good deal. Any neighborhood needs a decent liquor store, and this one fits the bill. read more

Yesterday, April 2 at 5:16pm I walked into this liquor store. I look a little young, so I always immediately show my id to avoid being harassed. I showed it to a blonde female behind the counter, and she told me she couldn't sale to me unless the person in my car showed id. This is the first time I encountered this predicament, so I told her that I was just giving him a ride, but she said it didn't matter. I told her I wasn't sure if I was going to get anything yet, because I didn't know if they had what I wanted at the price I wanted to pay. Then I found what I wanted, and I walked out to get my friends id. After getting his id I grabbed what I wanted off the shelf and proceeded to the check out counter, and before even getting to the counter a chunky Asian female told me "I'm not going to sale to you". I got upset, because she wasn't polite and she assumed that I didn't get my friends id whom was in the car, when it was right in my hand. I told her that she should ask me before she just assumes and at least wait until I got to the counter. She told me that she has the right to not sale to me and I told her I had the id; Then she told me with my attitude she's not going to sale to me and walked away. I had a right to be upset, because they had bad customer service and they made me feel completely humiliated. I normally buy liquor at the liquor store on Burnside and 102 in which they always have great customer service, but I thought I would try something closer to me and I never should have. I will never go back to that liquor store again; Worse customer service ever. read more
