    POWERHOUSE GYM #houseofgains

Well I been a member for about a year I think. And it was hard going in as overweight as I was. When I got there the staff was cool and helpful. I thought it was how the introduction was. Well over. A year later they are the same. Cool. Always smiling. Always willing for talk story. Wam welcomes are good for a place like that. And I always get That. I been out for like 3 months and when I returned they remembered me and helped boost my encouragement to keep going. Small gym? I think not. With all the muscle going on in there, small is not in their vocabulary. Inspired to see bodybuilders and power lifters and body toners all in one house getting theirs. And there is no bad vibes. Respect flows every possible way. #PHG #mygym #houseofgains **********Update 04/30/19********** I'm very disappointed with the discharge of a member. I called on Friday April 26 to terminate my membership. On this day every month, I am charged $26.00 for monthly membership. I have been paying this for about a year, without stepping foot into the gym. (my fault) So basically I've been making donations to this gym. Back to my 1 . I called on Friday in hopes to terminate before being charged again. And I was told the accountant was not In and that I would get a call back. No call. I call Monday thinking she would be in and once again no accountant available. Well call you back. I did get a call back but now I wasn't available. So I called back today 04/30/19 and spoke with the accountant. Let's say I wasn't happy. Accountant: how may I help you? Me: I would like to terminate my membership Accountant: we can definitely do that I just need your last name. Me: (provided last name) Accountant: ok that it thank.... Me: well I had another issue. I was trying to cancel my membership so that I wouldn't be charged another month and I was charged a annual fee of $51.18. Accountant: well the account was charged on Thursday not Friday so the payment wouldn't be avoided. Me: why this month was my account charged a day before the actual payment? This has never happened before. (Over 3 years) Accountant: we would have needed a 30 day notice of termination anyways. Is there any other questions you may have. Me: no. Thank you. I think this is a shady move to charge me a yearly fee upon canceling? So now I have made a year commitment to something I wanted out of. Based on this alone, i adjusted my rating to a 1 Star. The accountant wasn't even willing to work with me. Not even an humble apology.

This is only day 2 but I love the small Gym Effect. Of course, when you go into a gym of lifters (men); you feel self conscious as a women. Wait a minute, there's just as many women at Powerhouse getting fit too. You can do squats and overlook Pearl Harbor. It's a beautiful view. The gym itself is a little outdated. But it's about the experience. They offer sessions that focus on your Goals. There's no judgement and of course, everyone's sweating it out to great music. Man, the music pushes you to keep going. It's only Day 2...I'm feeling the burn. More to Come. ‍‍‍‍

Let's get the negative out of the way first: I'm not convinced that any gym is truly a 5-star gym. Powerhouse Aiea has all the makings of a 5-star gym, but for that reason, their sheer busy-ness makes it very difficult to work out here without the machine or weights you need being taken. Taking the aforementioned into consideration, this gym is well stocked with a large cardio area and numerous sections for weights and machines. Most impressively, it has a women's only area that is well-respected by gym members. The gym also offers free workout classes and paid classes such as martial arts. There's a gorgeous view of the water from most of the weights area which just adds to my love for the location. Most equipment is well-kept and the gym itself is fairly clean. The location is also 24 hours, which is hugely appealing if you work any awkward hours. The gym offers childcare, personal training, and body fat analysis. With everything this gym offers, it's pretty astounding that it's so inexpensive. I expect everything to be overpriced in Hawaii, but ~$30 a month for a gym membership is a good price to me. They also offer military discounts too. Both the staff and the gym-goers are pretty polite too, and I have yet to have any bad service from here. I even had a time where I went to Target before the gym and they stored my refrigerated groceries for me while I worked out! If you can get over the crowd, this gym is a solid choice, but from what I've heard, some of the big name gyms on the island are also crowded too, so that might just be the reality of Hawaii.

I was actually driving…read morenear the auto parts store and I noticed this garage that had a giant boxing ring in the back and a lot of different types of punching bags. Curious, I stepped inside and saw two guys in the ring with headgear sparring with each other. I also saw above me on the walls these giant pictures of all the fighters the gym trained. I was greeted by Coach Phil who looked a bit intimidating at first, but was very nice guy. He talked about how most people don't even know there's a boxing gym in Aiea, but said they were legitamate none the less. Going on to say that unlike other gyms boxing gyms where guys would have ego and start beef, BoxFit is about respect and honing your skills in order to get better. Whether you're an absolute beginner or an experienced competitor, Coach Phil said we're all learning new things everyday at our own pace. He said if I'm curious, come to a class (first one's free). If I like it, I can join. If not, no sweat. So I came the following Tuesday evening. Coah Phil said he normally swings by the gym during late evenings around 8pm so I would be trained by Coach Jazelle. I recognized her from one of the fighters pictured up on the walls. Like Coach Phil, I was also bit intimidated by her at first but eventually I learned she was also nice. Before the class started, she taught me the basic punches like the jab, stright, hook and uppercut. She said I need to remember those punches. I also noticed that the age of the participants were quite varied. Some looked to be in grade school, some looked to be only a few years younger than me and there were also a few who looked to be older than me. It was a really diverse group of students. So during the beginning of the class, Coach Jaz told us to get in our stance with our hands up. She called out certain punches by their assigned number and we were to perform those punches. At times she would demonstrate the correct form for those punches and tell us to do them again. We would do this for about 10 minutes. Next we would follow a certain curriculum that's written on a dry-erase board. They would be activities like performing combinations on a heavy bag, practice punch timing on the speed bad or the double-end bag, running, box jumping and many other exercies. We would spend about 3 minutes per station. Even though it was only a 45 minute class, it feels like a full body workout. Of course I decided to join the gym, but there are different tiers for the membership. You pay to either go once a week, twice a week or an unlimited number of times per week. How this works is let's say you sign up for the once per week membership and you go to the morning class on Tuesday. After that you feel like you have enough energy to join the evening Tuesday class. You can do that. Once a week meaning you can train all you want for one day out of the week and you can do all the classes or free training on your chosen day. With other gyms like 24 Hour Fitness and UFC gym, they can cost an arm and a leg while also feel quite boring. With BoxFit, the initiation fee is a lot less and I actually feel motivated to go to this gym. I'm never bored there. I want to learn to punch faster, slip punches, increase my stamina and my agility. Also if you want to box competitavely, they do that there as well. You would just need to talk to the coaches. Everyone has their own skill level and their own pace so don't feel frustrated. The coaches will help you. For anybody who wants to try something new and get active, I would highly recommend checking this place out. You can sit on a foldable chair and observe the classes to see if they're right for you.

I've been boxing, doing muay thai, Jiu Jitsu and other forms of combat for over 20 years, and at this point they're all kind of "ways of life" for me, so when I find a good gym I tend to hold onto it. 808 is a great boxing gym -- they have different group sessions, based on your skill level and what you want to do, and they have lots of different times throughout the week so it's not too hard to fit into your schedule (they also do one-on-one training too). I like the group sparring sessions because you get a chance to spar with people of many different skill levels, which is great for honing in on different skill sets (e.g., if you're an expert, sparring against someone who's more new, you can hold back and maybe just practice dodging, etc.). It's more affordable than other boxing gyms I've been to, especially considering that we're in Hawaii. Definitely gonna be back again.
