I came into the gym in January and asked the front desk about the cancelation process because I was moving in March. The guy at the front desk told me since I was under contract, I did not have to cancel and that it would just end at the end of my contract. I have now moved about an hour away and they are still charging me $60 a month. I called yesterday and was basically told too bad and that my membership cannot be canceled until their general manager is onsite. Today, I called again because I hadn't received a response and the person over the phone said "you will not be getting a refund because you didn't cancel and my general manager still isn't here so tough." Excuse me? Rude. Disrespectful. Lack of customer service. I will be in that gym in the next 24/48 hours trust and believe that! read more

So glad that this gym has remained open for those of us who need a good workout for mental and physical health during this difficult time. Great setup with whatever weights you may need. Great machines too. A no nonsense facility which is clean and well organized. Great staff as well. Lots of sanitizer bottles and towels to wipe down equipment. Wish I had looked at this gym before I signed a long time contract with LA Fitness which has remained closed. People should be allowed to make their own decisions regarding how they deal with this "pandemic". I wouldn't recommend an 80 year old or sickly person join, but for those of us not at risk, we should be allowed to work out and wear a mask when we are out amongst people who may be at risk. read more

Everyone who works at Powerhouse Gym in Birmingham is friendly. That makes me feel more fit just walking in the door! It's important to know what time periods it's best to visit, as it can be crowded. There is plenty of equipment so it's easy to find options. The location in Birmingham is very handy. The only fault is that the (free) parking structure across the street is sometimes busy with cars parked by valets at a nearby hotel which hosts many meetings and special events. There is another structure, though, nearby. The gym also employs a good number of trainers who are very good. read more

I think this gym is very fine. I am glad they are now 24 hours a day because now I do not get kicked out just before 10pm. That was a great upgrade. The gym itself is pretty good. It serves its purpose of being a convenient gym at a pretty OK price. For as long as I live within walking distance I will continue being a member. The TRX straps are very very old and worn and cold be replaced. I think they should consider TRX classes. Unfortunately I have had failed attempts with personal training here. They dont seem to be able to handle any new clients, which is a bummer. This is not a gym I would consider taking a shower in. The locker room is decent over all. It could use many upgrades for being located in the fanciest town. However I do not think I would be willing to sacrifice my monthly rate of $59.99 for an upgraded bathroom. I recommend they give the weights in the red room a deep cleaning. I always take a wipe to them before use. Hopefully I'm not the only one. All in all I will continue to go. The best class is with NAN she does a fabulous yogalates session a few days a week. I feel like this is a gym that could have perhaps spa water options or an ice machine. They recently upgraded the coffee machine which I appreciate. I think they may be phasing out styrofoam too... which they should as this is located in an upscale area. read more

I almost regret writing this review for the fact that it may draw in more people and ultimately crowd my typically uncrowded workout experiences. The employees here are great. They have always been friendly and helpful, and they are excellent about knowing you on a first name basis. The equipment is much like all other Powerhouses that I have experienced, top notch. The equipment and space is also abundant. The clientele is much more professional than your typical Powerhouse. There are a lot of professionals and very few gym rats and meat heads. This is also not to be confused with those found at your pizza and bagel gyms for $10/mo, where people here are serious about fitness. The locker rooms, very often a make-or-break for customers, are clean and very well maintained. Shower, sauna, individual digital combination lockers, large and small towels, etc., it's all here. read more

Powerhouse is a great gym. It has something for everyone. There are plenty of cardio machines that you never have to wait for. There are lots of classes that are not too crowded. The exercise machines,free weights and other equipment such as kettles and bosus and trx are readily available. The personal trainers are excellent. They work with all fitness levels and are helpful and knowledgeable. The gym is clean and friendly. read more

This is one of the nicest best gyms I've ever been too. I absolutely love it. Here's why: Good parking easy in and out even though it's downtown B-ham. Awesome selection of classes. Class instructors are super nice and helpful, make you feel welcome if you're going to the class for the first time. One of the best Yoga classes I've ever been to, room is dim, smells good and the instructor mixes things up each class. The cardio and bootcamp classes are a WORKOUT! Locker room is clean and nice. Towel Service. Lockers with a programable lock so no need to bring a lock. Steam room and sauna coming soon. Nice machines, some with TV's on them. Staff is very friendly. I am so happy at this gym. I've never stuck with going to a gym so consistently. Love it. read more

I previously enjoyed this gym, thus I am awarding it two( barely ) not one star. A positive is its rarely busy unless they offer a Groupon special . I was treated rudely and misinformed of my account being billed previous to freezing it....therefore I lost a lot of respect for this business.I would expect better communication and professionalism from a higher end club. I recommends Beverly Hils or even the new LA Fitness .the Powehouse Staff at Troy( 16 and Livernois) is also much more accommodating . I must add the instructors here regardless are very friendly and knowledgeable :) I joined LA fitness of Birmingham and never looked back. read more

I have been working out at Powerhouse Birmingham since it opened. I have been to other newer gyms that have opened up that are expensive national chains and found I am very satisfied where I am. It is convenient, clean, and open 24 hrs if I ever have a desire to go after hours. The equipment and trainers are excellent. read more

Clean facilities. Constantly updating their equipment. Lots of machines for you to use plus you have access to the gym 24/7. They offer a sauna and steam room, as well has a variety of classes for you to attend. The parking structure across the street is free for the first two hours. Definitely no complaints! read more

Sadly, I need to update this review. After canceling my membership and paying an early termination fee to do so, and being reassured that this ended my membership and it was paid in full, today, over a year later, I received a 259 dollar bill from a collection agency. I've never received a bill from powerhouse after the cancellation occurred, so frankly, this is some trumped up bull$hit. Make sure you get it in writing, people. Edit: back to two stars. I called and Matt told me my account was paid in full and that was an error that would be immediately corrected. So, we shall see. read more

Powerhouse Birmingham is a fantastic gym, but there are a few things that keep me from giving it five stars, really rating should be 4.5 stars. Pros: - Terrific variety of classes that are pretty much all free. Yoga with Jen is by far my favorite. She is brilliant and I usually go to her class at least once a week. - State of the art machines and equipment, with little wait time. The is not an over-populated gym. Another plus. - Extremely clean. - Friendly, accommodating staff (there was an ownership change and it has been for the better!). - Free parking for the first two hours right across the street in the structure, which is pretty good for a gym located in Downtown Birmingham. - Men's locker room is beautiful and has a great steam room (but there are some cons, which I will get to). - Towel service - Flat screen TVs abound. - Many attractive/sculpted people working out, which makes you go harder! Cons - The steam room can be on the fritz sometimes, which stinks. - They have been promising a sauna, it should arrive in February, I hope! - No basketball court, pool or racquet ball. This gym occupies the second story of a converted space. It is not necessarily a "small gym," but it lacks some of the amenities that a larger facility such as Lifetime or LA Fitness has. I can't speak for Lifetime, but LA Fitness is a dump compared to this place, however. With that being said, this is the best gym I've ever been a member of. read more

I have been going to this Powerhouse for about 9 months. This place is VERY CLEAN, there is always a man there cleaning... same guy, every day. They have a large variety of the latest gym equipment. The staff is friendly, the people at the desk (Matt & misc staff ) have started calling me by my name and that is amazing since I am an antisocial introvert. I highly recommend ARA for a personal trainer, great personality and provides me with the extra challenge I need. So far, I have taken some yoga classes... they are great and they are not overcrowded like the classes at YS and CFY. The instructors are just as good so I stopped going to the yoga only gym because I can get my cardio, yoga and weights for less than I have been paying YS. The gym is not super busy, although things truly pick up at 5pm. I work in downtown Birmingham and have just made it a habit to walk to the gym at lunch time and release some stress while not being a fatty. Lastly, I see far fewer "DB" there hogging machines compared to my experiences at LA Fitness! I have purchased protein bars there at either their cost or close to it, they do this for members. So far, the have significantly beat the price on any bar or supplement compared to what I was paying at GNC or Amazon. read more

I have worked out at this location for over a decade. Being a charter member in that same location at the gym that prior and carry my membership on when Powerhouse took over that location. However I recently had to cancel my membership... or at least attempt to, WAS GOING TO BE for a temporary time. I got so much hasele from Matt. I own a business. The most important thing a business has to offer is great customer service. It's great customer service that promotes repeat customers. Powerhouse just failed drastically at both. read more

Well I cancelled my membership and I was told I was all set. Three months after I left I was still being charged. Called and the manager told me they couldn't find my cancel paperwork and they may be able to give me one month back of the three months. Having been in the fitness industry for so long I knew that when he said "may be able" that was his way of telling me "your not getting shit back." I would say going to planet fitness would be a better deal. $10 a month and its 24 hours rather than powerhouse not being 24 hours. I would not recommend people join other than those who want to say the go to this gym. read more

Great gym, plenty of equipment and wonderful employees and trainers

I've been a member since the place opened, and the gym has been awesome. Staff is so friendly, they almost seem like family. The locker room is always spotless and towels always stocked. Most importantly, equipment still looks new as they seem to keep updating and adding over the years. There's even multiple dumbbell racks so you don't get that typical traffic jam like you do at other gyms of everyone hovering in one area in front of the most popular equipment in the gym. Everything is modern and upscale, but at a price that's sensible and reasonable. Still thrilled with the membership, and it keeps getting better. read more

If you are using a GroupOn, you are kind of treated like a second-class citizen - you have to tell the person at the desk your name, fill out a GroupOn sign-in sheet AND leave your drivers license at the front desk each time you workout. I'm surprised they don't have you park in a different lot, put a Scarlet letter "G", for GroupOn, on your shirt and make you workout outside. Waaaaaay too much work, but I guess you get what you pay for! Very clean gym, the hours are good, the classes are great, I love having towels at my disposal, free two-hour parking is great. I have had a few concerns with the place - once i came to one of the classes and the schedule online or at the gym did not reflect the cancelled class (but the staff knew the class was cancelled at least a week prior), sometimes the lotion dispenser is empty, and the sauna was closed down for a long time. Overall, it is a nice gym. I wouldn't say that it is a friendly place- staff or members. I will keep searching for a gym to call home... read more

New cardio equipment (all with tvs), great classes, fantastic trainers, SPOTLESS facility, helpful front desk...you name it. A little tricky to find at first, but once you do, it's all worth it. I did a trial membership at the gym and was very disappointed. The equipment was very limited as the gym is fairly small so you have to wait for the most popular machines. The treadmills are placed under a glass atrium which makes the space about 85 degrees when you are running. Not an ideal temp. The equipment is new and there are lots of fun new toys but if you just want a basic workout I would not recommend this gym. read more

I have been a member for 1.5 years. I think it is a very good facility. I like the flexibility of the hours particularly early in the morning. I arrive early, work out and shower before leaving for work. The facilities are clean and orderly. The steam and sauna work well for me on weekends. I think the equipment is state of the art with very few maintenance issues. There are plenty of options to choose from. The location is very convenient for me. Easy parking across the street and free as long as it you stay less than two hours. It is also near the center of Birmingham so there are things to do in town if you choose. All in all lI am glad I joined. It is my first gym membership and it has exceeded my expectations. read more

The front counter staff is courteous and they keep pretty busy with the towels which is a definite benefit-providing good towels. This gym has been my '2nd home' while I've lived in the area for a year. It's welcoming, clean, well equipped and all the staff & trainers are friendly. It's a huge gym with pretty much all the equipment you could want and the space to use it. The changing area is kept perfectly clean and the complimentary lotions and potions are welcome; sauna and steam room are nice. All equipment issues are managed speedily. Highly recommended - about the only possible things missing are a childrens' creche and pool but their absence in no way detracts from the gym. read more
