I was excited to begin my membership at Powerhouse Gym and begin a supervised regiment of weight training. My intention was to begin working out under the supervision of a highly trained, knowledgeable trainer. What I was introduced to was just the opposite. I called the Manager and requested to have the person who manages the trainers call me to set up a new appointment with a new trainer but no one ever returned my call. As a result, I didn't receive (but should've demanded) the direction I needed to fulfill my aspirations. Coupled with old, sometimes broken equipment, dirty/dingy workout areas and especially locker room, I seldom used my yearly membership. I recommend prior to signing a contract to really spend time evaluating this facility and more importantly benchmarking other nearby facilities to ensure you understand what you will have to live with until your contract expires. read more

I moved to SCS 3.5 years ago, it will be four years at the end of October. I signed a contract for this gym which I believe was 18 months (I'm out of town so cannot confirm at the moment). Last June I tore my bicep and then froze my membership because I needed to have surgery and everything was up in air. I had surgery, was unable to workout and my membership was frozen. Randomly I get a charge on my credit card from them when I hadn't been to the gym in MONTHS. I reached out to the branch and they said they had no record of my membership so I called chase to dispute it. Apparently it was reversed. Oh well, whatever. I'm unable to work out through the end of January 2024 and I know at this point my contract was up. They continued to call and text me that my membership was past due- had to get a new card because my old one expired and never gave them the info because I was UNABLE to workout per doctors orders. Either way, I hadn't been there in over 6 months. At this present time, I'd wager it's been at least 8 months if not more since I've been there and I just received an email from a collection company. FOR WHAT? I know I did not sign a 3.5-4 year contract for a gym. TAKE A HIKE. Your gym smells, your equipment is always broken, your employees screw around on their phones and don't even bother to acknowledge you. read more

This saint clair shores location gym is a joke.. near 3 years and dumbell weight is limited for people who wish to acquire more gains or strength. Staff ignores customer complaints when they are valid. People get pumped when they hear of new equipment till they learn it's trash no one uses. Gym panders to a demographic that is not the majority. Good thing I'm month to month and out of contract I can leave. I pay way too much monthly as it is. People have to jury rig dumbells by putting smaller dumbells criss cross further enabling an accident waiting to happen just get heavier lifts. Btw? Where are the 35 lbs plates? That's a gym standard at the 10 plus gyms I've been at in life or more. Cheap wobbly benches that'll fall over if you have more than 20 pounds. read more

I have been a gym member here for years. I froze my gym membership for a couple months when the cases of COVID spiked. I am back now, ready to get back into a routine and there is not one person inside wearing a mask, including staff. Litterally not one person, except for myself. I WILL NEVER GO TO THIS GYM AGAIN. So I started this membership sometime last year. And I wanted to do the student discount because I was a student and I knew I probably couldn't have paid the extra money. I spoke to the manager Ron at the gym in Saint Clair Shores on Harper Ave. I told him that's the one I wanted to do, and I also asked him if I could possibly cancel my membership at any point because I knew I would eventually be going to university and they don't have a powerhouse gym in that area. He told me and my mother that I COULD CANCEL AT ANYTIME. So with that, I went forward with the process. So the first issue was that he put me down for the regular membership instead of the student membership. I was upset about this, but honestly I let it go since I had started to make more money anyway at the time. So fast forward a few months later, I was preparing to move to university. I didn't see a way to cancel my membership from the app, so I called the gym and a different manager, didn't catch his name-- and I asked him how I could cancel my membership since I was leaving town. He told me I could cancel it by emailing the gym. Ok, so I do that and a few days later I get an email typed in all caps saying that I cannot cancel because I'm still "under contract agreement"??? It said that I would still have to pay for the membership until July of 2023 and if I don't then the membership will not cancel. Of course I was extremely confused because I had been told by 2 other managers that I could cancel at ANYTIME and I was told this before I even agreed to the membership. I would never had signed up if I could not cancel because I knew I wouldn't be able to pay for it while in college. And boy was I right about that because I barely even managed to keep $1 in my bank account. So anyway, I called back and this time someone else told me that I couldn't cancel. Would have been nice to know that before I signed up!!! The guy told me I could freeze my account and just pay $5/month. Now this was a little better until I started being charged 28-31 dollars on my card because of "failed payment"? There would be days when I'd have more than $5 in my account on the payment date and it wouldn't charge me for that, but it would still charge about $30 ultimately leading to an overdraft in my account. When this happened I called the gym and every time I asked to speak to a manager, the person would say that there is no manager today and they could leave a message for them to call me back later. Surprise surprise, I never get a call back for the next few days!! I always ended up calling again and again at different times until FINALLY I talk to a manager. I explained everything that happened and he told me he wasn't seeing a fee on his end when he looked into my account. Then he said "oh well I see it but it's only $16".. Of course this confused me because that's clearly not what it said on my end. He ended up kind of brushing it off and saying If I have the $5 in my account by that upcoming Monday, the amount take off my account would be refunded back to me. Well, IT NEVER DID. I am absolutely so tired of calling over and over again about this same problem that has been going on for months and honestly, I just want to be done with this BS. I am not paying for this I absolutely refuse. I just want to cancel my membership with this awful place and never come back. This whole issue has put a lot of stress on me that I definitely do not need right now and the whole thing could have been avoided if I wasn't LIED TO ABOUT THE MEMBERSHIP. Clearly someone doesn't know how to do their job in this establishment because there is no way that there should be this much trouble and this much confusion because someone in this place keeps giving out the wrong information. locked in a 16 month contract of prices higher than planet fitness and La fitness but infinitely less things to do, use, or take advantage of. Planet fitness and La fitness allow you to cancel online but as someone who works past the gym hours i'm unable to cancel, so i have to lose out on money, to stop losing out on money to this garbage place. some machines are worn and the punching bag/activity room has always been closed anytime i go in. owner is a dick too, i can see why there's so many bad reviews, no wonder they lure you into a contract at a young age with the summer free, it's the only way to guarantee money for their sham of a gym. i should have been smarter and checked the reviews. making it almost impossible to work with these guys. not to mention you don't get as many guests as you want or you'll be trespassed, when you pay $6 more a month than planet fitness who lets you bring one person with you anytime. absolutely pathetic excuse of a gym, almost as bad as your little hole in the wall gyms. btw i got yelp just to take a dump on these guys. don't matter anyway they probably know how to pull reviews they're not happy with. read more

Pros- A fair amount of free weights, a lot of variety of equipment, plenty of cardio, Smith Machines and power racks. Cons - Unorganized weights, No midnight staff, and Carpet. I really wish the mats were through out the gym not just in the free weight area. Its kind of gross to think that all that sweet is just getting soaked up in the carpet. read more

I was a member of powerhouse Novi for years, a member of powerhouse East Lansing for years and recently was a member of powerhouse SCS... briefly. I have not a single bad thing to say about the Novi and East Lansing locations but I would give this location 0 stars if I could. Powerhouse SCS over charged me for MONTHS, literally dipping their hands freely into my bank account and imposing random monthly charges whenever they wanted. Whenever I tried to call to dispute or cancel my membership, they always said a manager wasn't around and that they would call me back. They never did of course. When I did finally talk with a manager, they were extremely rude to me when all I tried to do was ask about the extra charges I was getting and cancel my membership. They had no excuse for the charges and suggested I pay a $200 cancellation fee despite me having been already charged over $200 in random fees and despite their staff ensuring me when I originally signed up that the cancellation fee is rarely if ever imposed. I have heard countless other stories from friends, family AND EVEN MY LOCAL BANK BRANCH about being overcharged by this Powerhouse location and being treated poorly by their staff. Clearly this specific location has sleazy management, incompetent staff and 0 respect for customers / customer service. If you'd like to be treated like a human being by your gym, do not go to this location! I have since left this gym and because of Powerhouse SCS and the way they treated me, I unfortunately will never be joining another powerhouse gym again in my life despite being a member at various different locations for the past decade. I will also be taking this location to small claims court with a record of all previous charges they imposed on me, so good luck powerhouse SCS! read more

I have been going here for roughly 3 months. This gym is decent but it is very small so a lot of the equipment is crammed together. The locker rooms are very dated with rusted lockers and overflowing toilets. The location of the gym is what sold me but when I signed up I was told stories that the gym was about to be remodeled and it would be much nicer. There are no signs of that 3 months later. But the absolute worst part about the place is the parking lot. There can be 3 cars in the lot and it still feels crowded. Be very careful with the contracts. My original sales rep bailed on the appointment and the guy that signed me up rushed through the entire process. If it wasn't for the location I would not go here. read more

The gym itself, isn't so bad. Its not that big. The classes are nice. I wish it had a pool and sauna. BUT thats not the reason for this review. When I signed up at the gym, I was under the impression that I would pay monthly and that I wouldn't be locked into a contract. When I went to cancel my membership 6 months later, I was informed that I was not only locked into a contract, but i was locked into a TWO year contract. WTF... The manager is shiesty. He does and says whatever to get peoples money. If you go here, record your dealings with the manager... hell, with whoever, you never know if all these people are in on the scheme. read more

Decent gym, but not a lot of value for the price. The lockerrooms are nice and are probably the best part. Freeweights and machines are decent, however, much of the cardio equipment is very outdated. The gym uses old tube tv's and half of them barely work. Alot of the cardio equipment is consistently out of order. The headphone audio systems on the cardio equipment rarely work. They are now open 24 hours which is a plus. The biggest problem is the contract. Good luck cancelling your membership even after you have fulfilled your obligation. Beware that they require 30 days notice to cancel the membership and also have an annual fee. read more

Awful staff members and company. Heard many stories about charges that should not have been received, rude staff and unfair rules. No matter how long you've been there they treat you poorly unless you buy personal training from one of their trainers. I'm ver pleased with this gym. The location is great and the hours work well for my hectic schedule. I was blessed to be matched with a fantastic trainer; Rachel. She makes sure to meet my goals while challenging me. I actually look forward to our sessions! My only complaint about the gym is that it's always hot in there. I joined about 8-9 months ago. had nothing but good experiences. I got a free fitness assessment, and they explained their personal training packages. I was not pressured to sign-up though, which was nice. They are open 24 hours, but I've only used the facility during staffed hours. Always see their trainers out there interacting. Good variety of equipment. Nice staff. Usually not too busy to use machines. read more

The manager at this gym is absolutely unbelievably stupid. I bought a Groupon for two months for 19 dollars and he signed me up for a continuing contract and told me I could cancel it after my Groupon ended if I didn't want to continue it there. When I went to cancel it they told me I couldn't because I was supposed to cancel that 30 days after WHICH HE NEVER MENTIONED TO ME. Long story short they're overpriced money hungry bastards. I cancelled my membership in May and was told everything was taken care of. I had moved to California and started receiving emails that I was past due on my membership. I called to find out what was going on and was told my membership was still active and that I owed June dues plus late fees and that I would have to pay July as well because they needed 30 days (despite the fact I was 2,000 miles away and could not use the gym and had cancelled in May.) I told them there was no way I was paying for July and they told me they would keep my membership active unless I paid that and the months would continue to add up. Save yourself the hassle. Not to mention the gym is small and has old equipment. read more

I only went here about two years ago because my trainer started working there. A lot of the staff walked around like they were better than everybody and they treated my trainer bad. The cancellation process was a nightmare I had to pay twice because the manager did not process it the first time. The cardio equipment was ok but it small and the worst parking. I've been a member for the last 5 years and they have hardly changed their classes. I even called the fitness manager (John) twice to ask about them bringing in new classes like Barre or Pilates and he never even bothered to call me back. They definitely need to add more of a variety of classes. I've also noticed that most of the cardio equipment is out of date and is consistently out of order. I've switched my membership to a month to month now, in hopes of finding a better gym in the area. read more

Dirty, TV's never work many of the cardio equipment is frequently out of order for months. If you ever complain to the front desk they just roll their eyes at you The staff has their favorite clients and the others that they could care less about. I would advise everybody to avoid this "hole in the wall" location they call a gym. Jason, the manager (for lack of a better word), is a con artist in disguise. He leaves your membership active for months on end (even after cancelling) so they can collect their money. I went into this gym in July 2015 to inquire about a membership. That's where i went wrong....I received phone call after phone call from this bone head trying to get me to sign up as if he were a toddler trying to get candy from mommy. This was the most dis-pleasurable and unprofessional gym I've ever experienced. If you people like to keep your money in your pockets, AVOID POWERHOUSE GYM AT 10 MILE AND HARPER IN ST. The gym is very clean, that's absolutely not an issue. However, this gym has several other problems. When cardio equipment is broken, it remains broken for months. Additionally, the front desk staff is INCREDIBLY rude. Often times, you'll see employees of the front desk staff outside the gym smoking. I just feel as though that presents a less than desirable image for a health and fitness facility. The front desk staff seems as if they all belong to a high school or college fraternity. They act immaturely and display less than professional behavior. The majority of their training staff is really great. They look like they give a lot of attention to their clients, with the exception of this one dude who is always training like two or three clients at once, paying no attention to their form or anything. Other than that, the younger trainers are really good. It's definitely not a lot of value for the price. It's overpriced for the amount of working equipment. I definitely wouldn't recommend this place to anyone, just based on the rude, immature front desk staff alone. read more
