This HPB location also ranks toward the top in cleanliness and organization (books kept in alphabetical order and easy to find despite constant client browsing). During that time, I have consistently chosen to support this location and have recommended it to others. My most recent visit, however, raised concerns significant enough that I no longer feel comfortable returning. I am low‑income and shop exclusively in the clearance section. On this visit, every item I selected was clearly marked clearance. At checkout, the cashier (name on tag: Ivane) isolated one book and stated, "You have the wrong sticker on that." The statement was delivered in a manner that was abrupt and accusatory. Given that all of my other items were clearance, the implication that I would intentionally misrepresent the price of a single book was both illogical and inappropriate. When I asked for the correct price, the item increased to $39.98. I declined the purchase. As I exited, another employee offered a "bye" that was noticeably forced and insincere. The overall atmosphere -- from the register to the door -- conveyed discomfort rather than customer service. I was wearing a visible Star of David. As a Jewish customer, the tone and conduct of the interaction left me feeling singled out and unwelcome. I cannot speak to anyone's intentions, but the experience did not align with the standards of fairness or respect this store publicly promotes. After more than a decade of loyalty, this experience was not only disappointing but concerning. I will not be returning. Given the seriousness of this incident, I am currently evaluating my options for addressing it further. I would prefer to resolve this directly with management before taking additional steps. I am open to being contacted so this matter can be appropriately addressed.
