Been wanting to give this place a try for a month after seeing gorgeous pictures of their pastries on instagram lately. I stopped by on a Sunday early morning right after they had opened and tried several items on display including a plain croissant, a pear danish, blueberry danish, and a valentine raspberry special bowtie. While the pastries looked pretty for instagram, they all needed a LOT more work. Everything here left me sad. There were no flakes, no crumble, and no crisp to the pastries (just soft, limp, sadness). The danishes here are also not cheap, with the blueberry danish being $8. According to the staff, all the danishes had come out fresh out of the oven JUST 30 minutes ago. Can only imagine how much more disappointing the pastries would've been for the people that came in after me. Save yourself a trip here and go to Michette, Lakon, Colette, Cremux Patisserie, SALT, or Little L instead if you're looking for a solid danish or croissant. Will not be back. read more

Just made my first visit and I'm wondering why I've never visited before; this place is wonderful, and for several reasons: - It's a rare city place with a parking lot - Even the street parking is easy - [[HIGHLIGHT]]Plenty of seating, soft French music[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] - Friendly staff - First croissant was warm! - Fresh stuff - Extensive selection without having so many that it's overkill - Some nice innovation but not cheap gimmickry aimed at the Instagram set Almond Croissant: Gigantic, still warm, very crusty, very flaky, and a near-liquid almond filling that was in the mild side but naturally sweet rather than pumped up with additives. Good crunch to the bite, sending flaky shrapnel everywhere, but yielding to the tender center. Somewhat buttery. Chocolate croissant: Not as gigantic, but a steal at under $5. Not warm but very fresh, very flaky and delicate, cracking more intensely in the bite with even more shrapnel. Underneath, a very light and fluffy feel, along with a very buttery taste. Not greasy at all; just great flavor, and that's not even counting the dark chocolate, which was understated but effective. Pain au Raisin: Again flaky, but a bit (only a bit) on the dry side, even with the noticeably custardy notes. Good flavor to the dough. Minimal glaze if any. A rung or two lower on the impressiveness scale than the almond and chocolate croissants, but still solid. Blueberry Danish: Nice pastry, many layers, light, crisp and delicate, while still being soft and buttery. Good flavor to the dough and faintly glazed. Surprisingly, the crispness lasted well into the early evening, when tried as a take-home item. Lots of blueberries, fresh and not too fussed with, along with a bit of blueberry compote. No gimmicks, no bombast, just good stuff. Looking forward to a quick return. On my mental shopping list to encompass a few visits: chocolate almond croissant, chocolate chip cookie dough croissant (aka "cookie" and the only gimmicky item I saw), apricot danish, pear danish, pain suisse, and babka. read more

Cute bakery with yummy pastries in Somerville! The people at the front were really friendly and went through what was in all the pastries when I asked, which was great! The inside is spacious and seems like it would be a great space to hang out or get some work done. We got 3 pastries including a danish, croissant, and brioche, and they were on the pricier side. Pain au chocolat was divine... the chocolate was melted which is not traditional but I liked having it spread throughout the pastry more. The croissant was flaky and soft... my favorite combo. I got the jumbo macaron in lemon a bit skeptical because I'm very picky about macarons. The taste was great. The crunchy exterior collapsed in messy breakage points. I prefer chewy textured macarons but this was still pretty good. I ended up eating the whole jumbo macaron when I meant to save half... oops. Service was great. Very helpful and friendly. The special croissants are pricier at $6 but they still look intriguing enough to try another time. I'm now even more exited that the Kendall Sq location is also opening in the next couple weeks! read more

Yelpers, help me out, I'm really confused. I look at Tatte (take your pick, they're all the same) and I see 4 stars across the board. Then I look at this place, something actually different, and it's on par with Starbucks? Where's the baseline here, ya'll? Boulangerie is just plain good, and it offers something different from the endless assortment of Flours and Tattes. The pastries have always been impressive, the croissants actually flake and the pastries taste like they're doing damage to your life span, like they should. Their bread is also top-notch, which is nice because it means I don't have to go to Whole Bezos for stale Iggys loaves anymore. This place is reasonably priced, off the bus line, and delicious. The workers are friendly and speak French which is cool and makes it feel more legit. I passed by to try some morning coffee and viennoiserie. We had Almond chocolate croissant and Pain suisse with cappuccino, and we both enjoyed it. The pain suisse was crunchy and moist and taste amazing. The almond croissant was crunchy and rich in almond flavor, i did like them and remind me of my french hometown! The cherry on the top of the cake is you can find some french merchandise like BN biscuits and LULU that reminds me of my childhood! Definitely bought couples, and yes they are more expensive than in France but in the range of other local cookies! The place vibe is cute and relax with only couple of tables. Pastries are really good as far as what I have tried. When I got there it's wasn't super busy so it wasn't bad as of waiting in line. Ordered a London Fog. And the cashier/barista gaslighted me into think it's just Earl gray with milk. Got the London fog and it's just earl gray with milk. No vanilla or foam. My friend and I ordered a pear danish, chocolate almond croissant, and two lattes. We had asked for a regular latte and a vanilla latte, but it was misheard and inputted as two caramel lattes. I tried the caramel latte and was befuddled to find that they had forgotten to add coffee to my drink. Unfortunately, I had to ask them to remake it as paying over 5 dollars for caramel milk is just not worth it. After they had remade it, I found that the coffee tasted overly burnt. Unfortunately, the caramel did not make the drink any better. It was thick and congealed in the latter half of the cup, making the entire drink unpalatable. The pear danish was not bad. It was flakey and light in flavor. The chocolate almond croissant was way denser in comparison. I enjoyed the almond layer on the top a lot, but the croissant itself was just all right. Overall, I will most likely not come back here when there is better coffee further down the street. read more

A very solid place for pastries. Got a plain croissant and was pleasantly surprised. The inside was pretty light and buttery without being greasy. The outside had a bit of crisp and the flavour wasn't too sweet. I would have liked the shell to be more flaky and delicate and the inside a little lighter but a very solid croissant. The almond croissant is also very good and large. Plain was $4 and almond is $6 which is sort of a lot but also in line with most other places in Cambridge/Boston. read more

I am shocked and dismayed that this place has so many positive reviews given my and my girlfriend's experience with this place. I live right around the corner and love fresh baked bread, so I was overjoyed when the bakery opened up. That said, my excitement did not last long at all after several purchases. I have had one recurring major health concern: approximately 2/3 of the pastries that I have purchased from Boulangerie have been undercooked in the middle. The first time this happened, my girlfriend and I brought the offending product back, and the cashier apologized profusely and immediately offered to exchange the undercooked pastry for any pastry of our choice. We accepted. The second time this happened, we weren't nearby afterwards, and were just disappointed as my girlfriend's breakfast was inedible. The third time this happened, my girlfriend, knowing there might be an issue, explicitly requested that they make sure they give her a fully baked product because she has Crohn's Disease, which means that undercooked pastries can be much more dangerous for her than for an average healthy adult. The employee responded by LAUGHING at her, and wishing her "good luck" in a sarcastic manner. The other employees also laughed. My girlfriend's pastry turned out to be particularly undercooked that day. I've also experienced some other smaller concerns since this place opened. When they first opened, the sizes of the pastries and breads were about on par with the market price for those goods in this area. Over time, the price-to-size ratio of products has worsened dramatically. The breads are half the size they were when the store opened, but the same price! Additionally, we were accepting some mistakes on fully-cookedness of pastries initially, but at this point after a few months, there's no excuse. For the time being, until Boulangerie proves that they've resolved outstanding issues, my girlfriend and I, who live a 3 minute walk away, will be going to Maprang in Union Square for pastries, and to Clear Flour in Brookline for bread! We highly advise you do the same if you value your GI health and/or money. read more

They serve a creme brûlée latte with a mini croissant as a garnish. I came here on a rainy day. It was very empty. I got a pain au chocolat and a quiche since they didn't have soup past 3:30 PM. I was disappointed with the lamination of the viennoiserie. There was no crispness and it felt underbaked? But maybe things got soggy from the humidity that day. The flavor and texture of the veggie quiche were good, but I found it too salty. There were maybe like 2 other customers just on their laptops. Very excited for this place to succeed; we need this place to thrive, the absence of The Biscuit still smarts and, with apologies to Broadsheet Coffee Roasters (coffee good, pastries not so much), this neighborhood still doesn't quite have a good replacement. Until now? Alas, Boulangerie has no interior seating, but maybe in the future we can dream? Anyway, only 4 stars from me just because it seems like they're still getting their sea legs. I tried the pain au chocolat several times now and sometimes it takes me right back to my many times in France (Paris, Lyon, Limoges, Nantes, Aix, and other cities), but other times it simply (and sadly) resembles the blah American versions that just make me hang my head in hilarious shame. Not sure if there are staffing issues, unforced errors by way of supplies or baking equipment, but whatever it is I hope it gets worked out, and fully expect it will. Opening a new branch / business is hard and I am 800% along for the ride and will keep trying out Boulangerie as they establish themselves in this awesome little weird neighborhood of Somerville! They're more often very good than they are mediocre, so give 'em a shot and share feedback for the new biz. read more

The pastries here are markedly better than anywhere else around. The chocolate croissants are incredibly fluffy, the regular croissants flakey, and the fruit pastries are fresh. There's good variety to choose from. The sandwiches are also very good; the bread in particular is excellent, and the meat and toppings fresh and flavorful. The coffee is very good. Seating is limited but there are some tables outside. A very welcome addition to the neighborhood. read more

Local fire department member here. We were having issues with this buildings fire alarm system and responded to the location multiple times. The nice workers inside took pity on us and gave us a few croissants and pain au chocolates.... They didn't last 3 minutes after we got back to the firehouse. Absolutely delicious. read more

Ordered and paid for a sandwich, for them to tell me that they couldn't give it to me because it was broken. They didn't have any other sandwiches or sandwich options, so I asked for a refund. They didn't know how to do refunds, so I had to sit there for them to try to figure it out. They ultimately couldn't figure out how to do refunds, so they gave me what I paid back in cash. They couldn't even figure out how much I paid, so I had to pull it up on my bank statement. Walked out empty handed. Very awkward. read more

The food was ok. I had the croissant. The interior was drab. No place to sit. Prices were expensive, which may be why there were no price tags. You only find out the price at checkout. Low score is for the poor attitude of checkout person who seemed surprised when asked to see the price breakdown. New bakery in the neighborhood selling breads, pastries, and desserts. I've tried their croissants and chocolate babka. The babka was very good and the chocolate used is delicious. The croissants are definitely fresh but were a bit too soft for my liking. It would be great if they were cooked a bit longer to really enjoy the flaky layers. Hopefully they'll soon add kouign amann to their selections. I'll definitely be back to try some of their other goods. read more

This is such a cute spot! Stopped by to get an iced coffee and they were super friendly and fast (granted it was noon on a work day). They had a cute selection of French items. I have been into the Boulangerie a few times and have found the staff very pleasant, helpful and the produce exceptional. The former changed today big time. I ordered a shot of expresso and had intended drink it in the typical french manner a few sips standing up. When handed a take out paper cup I said I hoped to have it the small demi-tasse cups which are on display around the expresso machine. I expect her to simply pour it into one of the cups and end of story. The staff person said she gave me the paper cup because she didn't want me to STEAL the cup. I told her I was most offended and she told me with the same deadpan expression that did not suggest this was "blague" joke and that there was no place to sit except in the foyer. She did not apologize I left the store such rudeness. read more
