I've had a mixture of experiences with this place, some good and some very negative. After continuing to shop here when needing gear in a pinch, I must update my review with additional feedback. (And generally give it an overhaul.) Recently, I had a very poor experience with the imaging department. They failed to ship a print to a client yet sent a confirmation email to inform me that it had been shipped. This put me in a bind schedule-wise, and didn't exactly make my client happy considering the delay. So, I definitely don't recommend having any prints shipped if you are worried about things like oh... deadlines and professionalism. Prior to my last few trips to PC&V, I didn't recommend this place for anything except perhaps developing and printing. I had several frustrating experiences with extremely rude/arrogant staff, as well as inconveniences during check out. (Had a check turned down for no apparent reason.) Not to mention I've been sold incompatible equipment once. (Quite disappointing and unnerving at the time, as I used to live 45 miles away from Austin.) However, the last few visits I made were quite positive. I was treated very courteously and found what I needed at a reasonable price. It's not exactly a B&H selection, but they have enough to offer that shopping with PC&V can be more convenient than ordering from time to time. I am starting to get the feeling that the personalities who are attracted to the photography field probably contribute to the combination of customer service experiences I've had: it's hit or miss. Some are arrogant 'artistes' and some are friendly and accommodating. Conclusion: Precision Camera & Video is like a box of chocolates. Find a friendly salesman if you can... or else you never know what you're gonna get. read more

As a entry level enthusiast, I went in to purchase my first "real" camera. Celisse helped me pick out a mirrorless camera which would keep me entertained for a while. Unfortunately, I went in around closing time. When I went in the next day Ron took over where Celisse left of and I ended up making my purchase. The customer service here is incredible because they aren't just selling a piece of equipment, they are ensuring you get everything you need for a lifestyle. Best experience at a Camera Store, ever. Very friendly and knowledgeable staff who are there to help you with anything and everything you need. I went in looking for a specific lens and in little to no time I had it in hand. The store as a whole is absolutely overwhelming in the sense that the absolutely have everything; it is crazy. There was a store in San Antonio that I passed up for this place due to the fact of their live online inventory. Yes, live. Although there were a few "lenses in the back" that hadn't been updated it is definitely top notch. It's definitely a MUST STOP! read more

I have had film developed here twice. Both times they promised a week. Both times I got there and they had not even started. "Come back in n hour and a half." First time it was done then. This time it is still not done. If you need film developed just know they won't touch it until you go to pick it up and then it will be a couple more hours. Don't plan on gettting it done on time. read more

I would like to add that I am impressed with Precision's response to my complain and the way it was handled. It took maybe an hour after my posting to receive a phone call from the floor manager apologizing for the experience and asking what they could do to make it up. The next day I received another call from a different employee, Sara, who once again apologized for everything. I did make my way back a week later and was met with a fresh pair of lens caps and yet another apology from the manager I had the initial run in with. Just goes to show that while mistakes do happen, the way you go about handling them is what makes all the difference. I would count myself as a customer of theirs once again. read more

I have had really good experiences at Precision. I purchased my Fuji XT1 from them with two lenses & the guy spent a couple hours helping me make my decision. I needed copies of my receipts about 6 months later, and I received them within an hour. Once I called and the persons attitude on the phone wasn't great. I emailed a complaint & received an apology and a quick fix within a day. It's a great place to make a major camera purchase! read more

Some of the people that work here are friendly but the lab is very unprofessional. I just picked up some negatives and got them home and they are all bent up. Another time I got negatives from them that had a big fingerprint on them. Their website advertises 2 day turn around on E-6 which is a bunch of bologna, they send it out to another lab and it takes at least 2 weeks. A while back I was planning a shoot for which I needed the film processed ASAP, I decided to shoot it on slide film because their website advertises the two day turn around on E-6. I shot it, then drove all the way out there only to be told that processing would take at least 2 weeks and it would have to be shipped to some unknown lab in Colorado. I live far away and wasted my time and gas, driving all the way out there and looked like an unprofessional idiot to the client who I promised would get their photos in 3 days. Their website also advertises 2 day turn around on C-41 which a joke as well. It always takes longer than that, and they often don't call you when its ready like they say they will. Since they don't call you, you have to call them, and often times the phone just rings and rings once you are transferred and the receptionist will finally just tell you to call back later. Im done with this place. I really wanted to like it, and support it, but I am going to start shipping my film out to a lab that I trust. read more

I usually have a good, productive visit to Precision and so haven't written a review for them before...but this time, Spencer Morehead, provided such excellent customer service I am compelled to review. I've started a small business and wanted tiny photos to go with a gift certificate to give a special "gift" to the purchaser. I had on a thumb drive what I thought should be printed and thank goodness, Spencer took the time to see the files. Not only did he help improve the images, he gave good design advice when he understood what I was trying to accomplish. and then...he let me know what I could do myself to manage costs for my new company, Texas Bike Tours. Rave, RAVE reviews for their rental & service department!! They are the absolute embodiment of Excellence Customer Service! Nick and Dave helped me out today with my external flash... I had neglected my flash by leaving batteries in it until they corroded. The damage was permanent. Dave got the flash to work but the prognosis would be that I would have to constantly clean the heads and pray that my flash would work. As a last ditch effort, I asked if there would be any way to just replace the door that locked the batteries in. Without skipping a beat, Nick told me they had a used flash they may be able to take it off from and within minutes Dave replaced the damaged part!! How much is service like this worth? Every time I go into Precision, I'm helped out by some of the most enthusiastic camera evangelists that I've ever met. All the people I've dealt with there have been super friendly and helpful. Today I went in because I was missing a knob for my tripod head. I was directed to the service desk, where Nikky saw the problem, got down a big tub'o'knobs, and searched through it for several minutes. He found one that fit and did not charge me. I had resigned myself to having to buy a new head, but I got out without opening my wallet. (No, not even to buy a new lens. I restrained myself. This time.) read more

I was directed here by the recommendations of my photography professors. Seeing as they have student discounts, I visit quite often (tip: I don't remember them asking for a student ID for proof...). Unless they're busy, I usually receive pretty friendly service. Also, contrary to what someone else posted, the only times I've been carded for using a credit card were when younger, newer cashiers were helping me. The professional photographer I interned with also takes her camera here to clean...so I guess if she's still going there that must say something about them. read more

Went here to get help with my video camera which I use for work. Josh was great! He spend time figuring out exactly what I needed and showed me how I could add a new lens to my video camera to get the wide-angle that I needed without compromising my sound quality. Very knowledgeable and helpful. He also gave me advice on my 13-year old daughter's interest in photography and how to best get her started. Great experience overall. I dropped off some slides to be made into prints at the south store located in Southpark Meadows. They said it would take 10 days, which I thought was kind of a long time, but ok. The south location did not actually do the processing; the job was sent to the Anderson Lane store. Days and days passed without a call or email. Eighteen days later I went into the south location in person to find out what the problem was. They called the other store and I was left waiting for over 20 minutes while the employees "looked for my order". They didn't have to walk to Bastrop or anything......how long does it take to find an order? The employee at the south location was actually left on hold so long-twice!-that the phone just cut off and he had to keep re-dialing. The third time I asked the clerk if I could talk to an employee at the other store. Finally, after a long wait, they said my order would be ready "this weekend sometime". Well, today is Good Friday and Sunday is Easter, so they will not be open on Sunday. That only leaves Saturday. Do I trust the photos will arrive tomorrow? Not a chance. If you have slides that need to be scanned and want prints made, DO NOT bring them to Precision Camera. The sad thing is I used to do business with Precision years ago all the time. I've been going to precision from time to time for the past 5 years and I can without a doubt say that this is an absolutely terrible store. Employees are rude, lack the most basic product knowledge and do not care about helping you get what you want, but rather getting a sale. Not to mention all items they sell are GROSSLY overpriced. What is particularly irritating to me is that on several occasions I've seen people from all departments of Precision take advantage of older customers, asserting that they should spend more on items they don't want/need and turning them away from getting their equipment repaired not because they don't have the know how but because it would require too much effort and they would lose out on sales. Then again, I don't fully know if they're turning down people because perhaps they don't have basic repair skills. As far as selling used equipment, if you go to precision you will get taken advantage of. But again, the employees simply seem to not care about the customers that they are ripping off. I've recently started going to Austin Camera and Imaging off of Burnett. I'm not trying to make any kind of plug, but if you are fed up with Precision then might I suggest this local mom and pop shop as an alternative. Very reasonably priced items and a friendly staff that will take the time to get you what you need and help you understand and use the equipment. Precision no longer has the monopoly in Austin and it's about damn time they realize that and either improve or shut their doors. read more

I have rented from this place multiple times Everyone here is great -Nikky Banda has the magic touch for trypods These people go above and beyond one time I had rented some equipment and I was setting for my shoot and one of the heads was stripped so it would not stay on sea stand. So I called and they had a new head to my location within 30 mins I would recommend anyone to rent here Just and FYI -if you have insurance home or business I would put them as a Payee that way u don't have to leave a deposit. Saves me every-time because sometimes the deposit u out on credit card takes 2-3 days to clear. read more

I've never rented anything here or taken a class, but THE PHOTO LAB IS AWFUL. --just a batch regular 3x5s took 3 DAYS to get printed. I want good quality prints, so i don't expect an hour, but 3 days for a super small, normal job seems absurd. --And not only did they take forever, but all my prints were super under-exposed, like 2-3 stops. It was crazy. I thought maybe I had done something wrong, but I had previously printed some of the images and was able to compare the two. Like night and day...literally in terms of light. --All the clerks are total newbies. In the last few months I haven't dealt with anyone who looked of drinking age. I had to tell one to not put her fingers all over a nice print I brought in for scanning. Another took so long going back and forth and back and forth and back again behind the door (to ask oz I guess?) about how to do every single little thing she needed to do it took forever. If this is a professional level shop, with prices to match, they need to hire trained, skilled individuals who know how to do their job to work the counter. --I called to get a refund for my under exposed prints and the clerk insisted that i drive across town to give them the bad pics. we are leaving town. i have three small kids. i already went in three days in a row thinking the pics (which turned out to be crappy) would be ready. I offered to email them. Nope. I have to go back AGAIN. So you screwed up, and you took forever and wasted so much of my time screwing up, and now you want to waste MORE of my time?! what the heck?! Customer service FAIL. --My sweet husband has been trying since before mother's day to get a photobook made for me. He took like an hour laying it all out in the store on their software, and then their program crashed after he sent it! He had our four year old with him, who is not a chill kid. The stress and effort showed a lot of love. After it didn't go through, the lab tech just said, "Sorry man, our software is kinda shitty." NO FREAKING JOKE. We are learning the hard way that ther are a lot of things about your lab that are "kinda shitty." So, then my husband wrote it all out by hand, per the instructions of the lab tech (again, who we later learned didnt know what he was doing), which took another long chunk of time, but the names of the pics didnt come through (lab tech should have known they wouldn't, right?!), so that was a complete waste of time too. He came back in again a third time, and it was screwed up another way. How a photolab is not able to help a customer leave with a photobook over three separate tries, in which the customer did everything he was told, is really beyond me. After so much trouble, I asked the clerk I spoke to on the phone about getting the refund, which i have not gotten, what is up with this place. She admitted to me that they've been short handed. Seems like something bigger is amiss, but who knows. All I know is that I am SO done with this place and you should stay away too. If anyone out there has a favorite place to get quality, professional quality prints made in Central Austin without all the drama, please let me know. I need a new goto place. read more

I shoot film, I'm kind of new to the area so I needed to find a place to drop off my medium format film. I dropped film off on a Saturday and it was ready a few days later, when I picked up not only was all the film professional processed, the negatives were in 3 hole sheets, and the price was very reasonable. That would get a 4 star rating from me, but I go all the way to 5 because they offered the used of a light table and a loop to pour over my photos and really examine them to my hearts content. Because of how welcome they made me feel and were willing to let stay and look over my photos, I ordered some large prints and will be picking them up in a few days as well. If you want to be treated with respect and be around other passionate photographers. Come to Precision. read more

Nothing but good things to say about this place. I'm a total photography noob. Went in a couple weeks ago with a pretty good idea of what kind of camera I wanted and how much I wanted to spend on it. The sales guy - who's name I think was Ian - was super helpful. Very friendly, spent a lot of time answering all my dumb noob questions, and guided me toward a camera and accessories that were just right for my desires. I've been very happy with my purchase. The other day I went back for an additional lens and another fellow who's name I can't remember was equally helpful. I ended up paying about half of what I expected because they had a used lens in stock, which was just fine by me. I all hope all my future visits to the store will continue to be this pleasant. This place is a joke. I brought in my husband's childhood photos for retouching. I took them without permission and Precision assured me they'd be safe. Got the call that they were ready and went the following day to pick them up - they were no where to be found. Precision LOST the photos. The manager promised to refund my money and never did. I had to open a dispute with my credit card in order to get my money back. They never located the photos and I had to call repeatedly. Horrible customer service. read more

I have had a really dependable Manfrotto tripod for about 8 years--the 501HDV with the 055XB legs. Haven't had a single problem with it, and I've put it through a lot of hell. Until Monday, I was shoving the head downwards to quickly retract the legs and one of the knuckles popped. It's what I get, I was being lazy even though I've done that dozens of times. I call Precision and they say they can fix it but they might have to order a part which could take a while. Nikki helps me at the rental desk and says "you're in luck". He disappears with my tripod for five minutes, returning with a fully functional, brand new knuckle on the leg. He said that he just happened to have that piece on the workbench in the back. I thanked him and asked what I owe. He said not a thing, just to come back the next time I need anything. Great service. Cheers Precision Cam! read more

This is an update. I've been a long time customer, so it's unfortunate that I have to lower my rating at this time. For as long as I've been dropping off film here, for four or so years, the turn around time has consistently been one week. One week turnaround is not fast for film processing. But it's not unreasonable, and by no means slow either. Recently though it seems turnaround times have been getting longer. I can no longer count on film being ready one week from when I dropped it off. Not sure what the deal is, but it gives me a dilemma. There are plenty of labs I can mail my film to, and have it back within 9 or ten days. I can send it from home and get it back to my home, so no inconvenience of driving to the shop. The only downside was having to wait 9 or ten days, when there was a faster, local option available. But the local option isn't faster anymore. I've also had a number of Quality Control issues over the past year and a half. Nothing major - but, sometimes when getting film scanned for instance, a frame might be missing, and at least once I've received scans where the film was put in the scanner wrong way around (scanning the wrong side of the film). For the combination of slower service, and recent quality issues, I felt I had to take back one star from my older rating. On the bright side, everything else that I said in my first review still holds true, and if you're there on the right day the camera swap-meet is a must. PS: that they have two different closing times on weekends has tripped me up several times. Why not close at the same time on Sat and Sun? Sure it's my fault for not checking before driving over there, but it's also the only shop I've ever been to that does different closing times for different weekend days. read more

So I went into the store looking for an adaptor for a tripod head so I could mount it on a camera slider. I took a number and waited a few minutes for help. An elderly man (most of their floor employees are older) came to help. He had no clue with what i was trying to do and tried to sell me some random parts that sort of seemed like they would be appropriate. He wasn't very friendly nor helpful so I just purchased what he recommended and left. I got to may care and thought about the parts I had been sold. I realized that they would not work. So I went back in and picked up the a set of adaptors that the salesman told me wouldn't work. I thought what the hell I'll give it a shot. I take another number and a different eldery man helps me out. I express to him that I hope this works and he has me explain what I am trying to do. In less than a minute he figured it out and sold me the correct parts. The first associate meant well but was not knowledgeable. I got to brick and mortar stores to get expertise as well. read more

The used camera department has never steered me wrong, but I'm super disappointed with the photo lab. When I brought in a few rolls of film that I wasn't sure were viable, I was assured that I wouldn't have to pay if my roll of film didn't work out and would only be charged for the exposures they were able to rescue. It took almost two weeks and only four barely exposed prints came out and I was charged almost twenty dollars and charged for a cd that I never agreed to purchase. The exposures should have never been printed and they should have junked the entire roll. Why would I want ruined photo prints? The clerk was extremely unpleasant and had to call her manager, and was only able to refund me four dollars for the things I never agreed to purchase. I hate to say this, but I wish I went to Costco. I'm not looking forward to seeing the other roll which I have yet to receive. 1 star. UPDATED REVIEW: After another return, it took five to ten minutes of persuading the desk clerk, but we finally got someone to help us! Gregg, understood our predicament and although we were happy to pay for the developing fee for processing our unviable film, he gave us a full refund and a replacement roll. Once he got the ball rolling, everyone was helpful and courteous. But of course, the older gentlemen at the back desk couldn't let us leave without insisting on inspecting our film, not hearing any of the situation, and blaming my camera jamming and telling me how we need to get it fixed (which we ALREADY KNEW when we first warned the clerk that our film PROBABLY WASN'T VIABLE because we shot it in an ANTIQUE CAMERA and the film was VERY OLD when we first dropped it off). All we wanted was someone in film processing to at the very least, let us know that our film didn't work and couldn't/shouldn't be printed BEFORE going through with it and also not charge us for additional services we never agreed to. AGAIN, still was happy to pay for the processing fee. It didn't feel like he was trying to be helpful by inspecting my film, it really felt like he wanted desperately to shift the blame back to me so the situation would be the fault of my camera and not the staff (which still had nothing to do with anything). They still weren't able to find our second roll of film in store, so it took an hour or so after leaving to find out where it was until we received a call that it was on hold at precision and not at the developing lab where we were originally told it was. The person on the phone wasn't very helpful or knowledgable when I asked questions about the film/if it was even worth it to process it seeing that my other roll didn't work out. The box was checked for CD on the package for this one as well, which I also never asked for, but glad I caught. Thank you for correcting the situation! Hopefully the staff can all get on the same page in the photo lab chaos. It seems that everyone on staff is confused and has no idea what's going on with a touch a of the mansplain. My first time yesterday and I was very happy with the store. Bright and clean; had enough items that you can find 'something' in a pinch. (I would typically order an item that I'm specifically looking for.) I did spend a good amount in a grip and battery. I found the salesperson friendly and helpful enough. My only issue is that during our conversations I mentioned that I really only buy Nikon brand items. (Not a fan of grey market, after market or other off brand items.) Especially when it comes to batteries. I even asked questions about why Nikon made the EL-15a to see if he had any info that I couldn't find. The battery was $59.99 and can in a yellow case. It was our in the bad with the Nikon grip I purchased. Based on the price alone I was certain this was a Nikon battery. Alas, no. I drove 80 minutes home, to see that in my bag, was a ProMaster battery. (Something I clearly said I didn't like.) I believe that if this is all you have to offer you should let me know I'm not getting a Nikon product. Let me decide.... Especially when I can buy the Nikon battery for $48.99! Why did I pay extra for what I expressly said I was uncomfortable with? I would prefer to think the salesperson tuned me out rather than think he simply sold me this on purpose. My visit went from 5 stars to 3 as a result. read more

I took an old (and well loved) camera lens to Precision for repair. The associate who helped me was professional and gave me several options re: replacing or repairing the lens. I ultimately choose to repair my lens as it seemed like the best option. The repaired lens was ready BEFORE I expected and the cost was below the estimate. The lens is like new and my pictures are crystal clear w/ brilliant focus and color. Thank you to the technician and friendly staff for the outstanding service. read more

Customer service makes all the difference and apparently they understand this here. This could have been a different review if it weren't for Mark and Shelly at Precision Camera. They turned a potentially bad experience into a very nice one. I saw a facebook deal for a digital camera class at this store. It was cheap and I had new camera that I wanted to get the most out of so I bought it. I don't know of all of these deals work out this way but you can't get your voucher or make an appointment until the deal closes and then, then you get see what the terms of the offer are. This is bad. The only class I could sign up for was in the middle of my vacation. This was the only class offered at all and the offer expired in less than 3 months. I understand that camera classes aren't their bread and butter here. Also these Facebook deals are relatively new. Shelly listened patiently to my complaints and was very understanding. Mark totally came through for me. Apparently the facebook offer was connected to a teacher and not the actual store but instead of just giving me the brush off or my money back he replaced my useless voucher with classes that worked out with my schedule and gave me an extra one to boot. Very friendly and professional. Oh yeah, and I shop here too and they have always been very informative and know their stuff. read more

Wow! What a great camera store. I have visited other camera stores in Texas and nothing compares. The store is huge and is stocked beyond belief. It has all the latest equipment, huge store, extremely knowledgeable sales associates, great management and customer service. It is great having a sales team that really knows the business. When you ask a question, they respond from first hand experience. Precision has excellent relationships with the manufacturers. They host fantastic seminars and demos of new products. Recently, they hosted a Nikon Night and it was fantastic. Nikon even flew in staff from their service centers to clean customers equipment for free. Wow! That is not available from online purcahses. I can't say enough good things about the precision team. Robert is excellent, if you have questions and are into action photography, he is your man. He shoots many of the sports teams in town. He also knows wildlife photography. My camera had an issue right after I purchased it and Mark, the store manager, made it right. He went above and beyond what he had to do. He knows how to take care of customers and develop lifetime customers. You need to get to know him. Sharlie the Nikon representative is outstanding. She knows her business and gets things done. You will be better for knowing her. Bottomline - you need to shop local and you need to shop Precision Camera. Their business is all about relationships. You won't get this kind of service ordering online. If you find a better price talk to them. Remember if you want to have local choices, you need to shop local. read more

I was told my camcorder would come in by Halloween I called back October 31 during the day for update Colby said he was about to call me(...( 3 times they were about to call me I'm always follow up) and said he didn't know what happened to it but offered me another one which I would see if I liked it... I went and picked up .... unsealed and obviously a returned product I am returning the USED ITEM TODAY 11/8/20 thy have had my money for over 2 months then they give me a used item charging me like it was new very disappointed in my whole experience seem like they would have offered me a discount or even a sm at lol camera bag or something!!! Worst customer service ever, not sure how this place stays in business for printing. Called to make sure an order was ready before I made the 20 minute drive. Was told "yes, printing now & will be done in 30 mins". I get there 30 mins later & not anywhere close to done. Was told "printer broke". I understand those things happen. Good customer service would of picked up the phone & called me right back & tell me this. No apologies from employee - it's the "printer". Wait in the store over an hour & still not done. A solid camera store with friendly, knowledgeable staff. I've bought a handful of accessories and equipment over the years from this place, even before their move to the current location. I'm not a professional, so my purchase history is moderate, probably on par for someone who is a hobbyist. If you're looking for a new camera and need some help finding the right one for you, I strongly recommend this place. But why only three starts? My experience has always had been that there is always just 'one thing' that nags me about my interactions with the store. Not quite a bad experience, but not a perfect one either. I often feel like if I had the time to wait for Amazon or could make the drive down to Holland (for prints) I might as well. Two recent examples: 1) I called about a film developing class they had to make sure I had the right equipment to bring. I spoke with one sales rep who was extremely helpful and friendly but not completely sure that I would be good with what I had (using a medium format camera as well as my own film development canisters for a class that said students would be developing 35mm). So he transfers me to the education coordinator who is away at from desk. No big deal, I leave a message. But here's the rub: the dates for the class came and went and I never got a call back. So maybe I was transferred to the wrong desk, maybe the education coordinator was out all week, maybe something else... but I was prepared to spend the money for the class and had made sure my calendar was free. 2) I sent some digital files for prints. It wasn't a big order: just a half dozen or so 4x6 prints and one 8x10. I got an email about 1pm that my order was ready for pick up. When I showed up at 3pm, my 8x10 was not with my files and in fact, the very friendly rep at the counter had no idea there was an issue. When I asked where my 8x10 was, she went to the back in case they were printing it. She came out to tell me that the file was corrupted. So my options were (a) get a refund for the print, (b) go home and get my computer and re-export another file, (c) re-send the file through the online print order system. But here's the rub: no one called me in the two hours between when my order was ready and when I showed up. The rep at the counter was under the impression that my prints had just been placed in the pickup bins, unaware that a sufficient enough time had gone by for someone there to pickup the phone and let me know there was an issue. I could have easily resent a file before driving to the store. Thankfully, these prints were just some that I wanted for family and friends and not mission critical. I could imagine that if this were a professional job with a deadline, I'd be much more upset. Again, not like these are deal-breakers but they do kind of rub the wrong way. I was in today and Tamra helped me. I needed an SLR, Macro lens, and Ring Flash for dental photography. Tamra was SOOO helpful!! They had everything I was hoping to purchase, including a used Nikon 7100. She worked hard to find me a camera bag in which I could store the camera with the ring flash and lens attached and then she helped adjust the dividers inside the bag to offer the best support/protection for the camera. I am pretty ignorant when it comes to photography so I really appreciated the advice she gave me in addition to the sales support. I could have purchased this on line for about the same price (I checked!), but I want to be able to walk in and get the support I need in 2 months when my white balance is out of wack from too many of us adjusting the settings in clinic! :) :) Seriously though.
