Jamie was helpful with the quote. The crew did not do a good job. Many items misplaced and didn't complete the job. Two guys showed up. The expected third one was not available. I had packed boxes with labels for which room they should go. Simple apartment with 2 bedrooms, kitchen, living room And a separate storage room. They put many boxes in the wrong room. Box labeled Bedroom 2 was in storage. Boxes In bedroom labeled "kitchen" etc A box marked FRAGILE contained ceramic bowls carefully wrapped in plastic were broken. When I complained was told the breakage wasn't to be reimbursed as I didn't take their insurance. I was never told about insurance. They left behind two chair mats, a 4x5 braided rug and mat. They did not replace the door they removed to make room for taking bigger items through the door and did not leave me the pins for hinges. No recommendation except: don't hire Preferred Movers. read more

It's been a while since we moved and just getting around to leaving a review. First, they changed the move date on us just a few days before the move. Could have been a big problem, but fortunately we were able to be flexible. Second, nearly every single piece of wood furniture we own ended up with a gouge, scratch or dent etc. Third, in the new place, we put our cat in a basement room with a door to keep her safe and so she couldn't escape during the move. I had a big, visible sign on the door that said 'Cat, do not open'. Well, one of the guys decided it would be a good idea to open the door and play with the cat. Great. Luckily she didn't escape the new house. Could have been a disaster. Last but not least, we paid 20K to have the cherry floors refinished throughout the new house and they were completed just a few days before we moved. They left us a lovely 5' deep gash in one of the rooms and a couple deep dents and scratches in the hall. We had an estimate done for repair and submitted it ($2,000 roughly) to this moving company with a claim. We were told their insurance, which we bought as part of the moving package, did not cover that. Would never use this company again. read more

Where do I start? They broke my great grandmothers antique china hutch, dropped our washer off the back of the moving truck (see attached pictures) and dinged up our new hardwood floors and gouged the walls in our new home. When we plugged in the washer it did not work, the china hutch needed to be repaired and the floors and walls also need to be fixed. Do not hire these unprofessional and untrained idiots unless you want your belongings destroyed. And to top it off the owner, Pat, tried to pretend like he was concerned. They still haven't settled my insurance claim and last contact with them I was told they were laying off and probably going our of business. They damaged and lost items . They were almost a month overdue with delivery after reneging on delivery dates.They changed my contract without notice and refused to unload the truck until I paid the increase. I'm giving preferred mover manager Pat Bremen in Merrimack Ma a zero rating. We moved from Nashua NH to Rochester NH last week and because both my husband and I have mobility issues we hired and contracted with them over a month before our move. We contracted and confirmed with them that they would send 4 guys to pack us. They sent 2 men on Monday and they came at 9:30 instead of 7:30 and then left 2 hours later. The next morning they were supposed to be there and did a no show. We called to see when they would arrive and we were told they weren't coming. I sent them a copy of their own contract that was dated and signed but they. Refused to send someone. We had a closing coming up early morning and nothing was packed other than 1 cabinet in the 2 hours that they did come. My husband contacted an atty because we didn't want to lose our deposit money for real estate. 3 homes were in danger of breaching a contract and all properties would have lost out hundreds of thousand of dollars. Finally the day before the closing he (PatBreen) sent 2 men in the morning and at intervals more men showed up. They literally worked their butts off trying to cram this big job into one day. His employees were great, but the human body gets tired and things don't get done right. They didn't finish loading the truck until after 10 pm and then it was realized that they didn't unload my garage with about 15 boxes and they left my outside furniture on my deck. Someone had to come in the next morning to take everything and the new owners came for the walkthrough and closing and saw them loading the truck. She started screaming at them to take everything,so they took it to keep her quiet. Preffered was supposed to unpack us but called and said that they weren't going to unpack us now because my husband called an atty to see where they were and Pats reputation was at stake. They left us high and dry and now unpacking has become a chore for two people with mobility issues. So far I've come across moldy food left in an open box in my garage, and a small bag with meat on my living room floor. They also broke the stand on my 55 inch tv that I no longer can use. One of my Tiffany lamps was broken, a turkish mosaic lamp had 2 globes broken. I don't have the energy to argue with them. I am totally frustrated with them but I would like this posted to yelp. They did take off the 1100.00 part of the bill after the lawyer had to call them back. The workers had told us that he does this all the time because he only has to pay them for one days work. Pat is scum in my books and I will never ever in a million years hire them for anything. Fortunately I was able to get another company to finish what they left us. They were the ones that found the broken items and I found the spoiled food items in my garage and on my living room floor - zero review. Had a horrible experience with Pat Brean, the owner. He quoted us $7k after thoroughly inspecting our home in person. We agreed at that price for the entire move. The job took 4 trucks, not 3 as he had assumed. He put a gun to my head by saying that he would stop the men from unloading unless we paid him $2600 additional in cash by noon of that day while the men were unloading. I would not recommend him at all. He does not honor his word. Be very careful dealing with him. read more

Our move from Cambridge, MA to Portland, ME with Jimmy and Travis really could not have gone any more smoothly.  The day before the move, I received the call I was promised telling us when to expect the van to appear. On Moving Day, Jimmy called within the given window, telling us he was on his way and giving us plenty of Heads Up time to be ready for them when they got to us.  We didn't have very much that needed to be moved, but what we had, we really DID need movers' help for.  Everyone arrived in Portland, as planned, and Jimmy and Travis did an excellent job of getting our things out of the truck, figuring out the best route up to the apartment, and placing things where we wanted them to go. It was borderline for us whether we really needed to go to the expense of hiring movers to help with this relatively small move.  Having gone through the experience, I have no regrets.  I would gladly hire Preferred Movers again and would happily recommend them to others, based on our experience. read more

I recently moved from a tiny town in rural Massachusetts to the relatively mean streets of Pittsburgh, PA. One of the major problems with moving from a place in the middle of nowhere is that it's hard to find a moving company. Thus for my move I didn't quite know what to do, so I turned to the internet and posted to one of those "Find a Mover" sites. Within minutes I was inundated with moving offers, mostly from companies in NYC and Boston. Most of these places had me fill out an online inventory sheet, from which they derived an estimate. Knowing myself as well as I do, I knew that the inventory sheet would be incomplete due to my tiny attention span. Therefore it was important to me to get someone to actually come out and look at my stuff. Out of all the online offers I received, ONE company wanted to visit me in person: Preferred Movers out of New Hampshire. I didn't go with them specifically because they came out for me, or because Paul, their salesman, was a swell guy (although he was), or because their estimate was lowest (but it was), or because they offered to have my stuff to me in 2-4 days (instead of the 5-10 the big van lines offered). I went with them because all those specific things added up. Patting myself on the back here, I made a good decision. Jim, Preferred's dispatcher, was reachable any time I had a question. The movers were fast, efficient, and professional and actually delivered my stuff a day early! The cost was also on the low end of what I expected. This past year has been a year of major transition and upheaval in my life. I moved my office, sold a home, got divorced, moved to a new place, and replaced almost all of my furniture. Throughout all of these changes, moves, acquisitions, and dispositions, Preferred Movers was there for me when I needed them. Preferred Movers can handle any moving job, large or small, while offering the personal attention to detail you won't find with a national firm. In all my experiences with them, which spanned multiple crews and were months apart, they were always prompt, careful, thorough, efficient, and reasonably priced. They were available on very short notice (less than 48 hours) when I needed to move out of my house during a divorce. They have more than capably handled several large-scale moves for me. The heaviest pieces of equipment are no problem for them, since they have not only the proper equipment but also people who know how to use it. They moved my manufacturing and shop equipment from 2 locations (a storage facility and my old shop) into my new space. More recently, they moved my children's huge swing set from our old house to another location. What really makes them stand out from the competition, though, is their attention to detail. When I sold my house, they packed all of my dishes, misc. kitchen things, clothes, beds, flat screen TVs, garage contents, building materials, and more and quickly and safely moved them to my new home. Everything was packed logically and clearly labeled, which made finding my dishes, glasses, kitchen utensils, towels, clothes, and other essential items after I moved very easy and far faster than it would have been otherwise. Another time, they picked up used furniture for me that I purchased on craigslist and dropped it off while I wasn't at home. I arrived home to find the furniture perfectly placed in my living room with no mess to clean up. Even the pillows were placed just right on the couches. The owner, Pat, personally surveyed my moves, taking note of any special large or heavy items in advance to ensure they had sufficient manpower, trucks, equipment, boxes, blankets, etc. to get the job done right the first time. After the move, when the glass for a picture frame was cracked, Pat quickly came over to inspect it and took the picture with him. He had the glass replaced at his expense--no questions asked--and personally delivered it back to me a few days later, apologizing for the inconvenience. Jamie, their office manager/dispatcher, is an amazing communicator who is on top of every detail. She always ensured I knew what was happening well in advance and was able to make alternate arrangements and reschedule as needed when circumstances changed due to my plans, weather, or some other factor outside their control. She also helped me get my Internet, TV, and phone set up at my new location, which was completely above and beyond what I expect movers to do. I am very happy with my choice to use Preferred Movers for all of these jobs. I don't have much experience with other movers in the seacoast NH region, but I do have a lot with Preferred Movers, and I highly recommend them. When I find a company that does great work at a reasonable price, they have a customer for life. read more

We used preferred movers to move our family's belongings from outside of Philadelphia up to a small town on the coast near Boston. They were on time and very professional and we didn't have any issues with inventory or damaged items. We had no trouble tracking everything along its route up the Northeast corridor and were pleased to have everything show up and be unloaded in a very timely fashion. Even more important to us, everything made it into our brand new home without any dings in the walls or scuffs on the floors, and it was all placed in the correct rooms in an orderly fashion which made unpacking a breeze. Having solicited many other companies in several locations we couldn't find anyone we'd trust with our possessions especially at a reasonable price. Do Not use them!! We we referred by our Accountant and they were not the cheapest price. They came to our house several times but never mentioned the insurance process until the day before the move and when my wife asked about the insurance they said that if we wanted them to move us tomorrow then we had to pick the weight not the value as there was no time to get all of our valuables appraised. They moved and stored our home and when they moved our home they broke almost everything. I am not kidding!! We would have been better off moving everything ourselves. The owner said that he was so sorry as he saw what his movers broke first hand but in the end said that we did not sign for the insurance. they had plenty of time to let us know about the insurance. This is a bait and switch and I can't tell you how many valuable items that we will never have again because of Preferred Movers. For instance we had a Dining room table made in Italy that we told the movers to be very careful and do not lift it by the glass and what did they do, they lifted it by the glass and broke the table which alone was valued over 8K but the value by the weight is 200.00. Oh by the way they never even filed a claim and we got nothing. Do yourself a favor and research before you use a mover. But I recommend that you never use this company!! I used Preferred Movers for an out of state move in March 2012. Everything started out okay, the guys arrived on time on loading day. It was a long day of packing and loading though, and the guys ran out of steam. They told me they had worked late on another move the day before and were exhausted. Towards the end of the day, one mover became visibly upset and refused to do any more loading. I did not feel safe having him on my property. During loading, one mover kicked and broke a floor vase, then complained to me that it was in the way of his foot. This mover did not dispose of the glass shards correctly-- they wrapped but did not tape up the bundle, and placed it in my kitchen trash. When I went to take the trash out, the glass protruded from the bag and cut through my pants and gashed my knee. I still have a scar. The company refused to pay for the vase or my ruined pants because only damages incurred while "in transit" are covered. The delivery was a day later than promised, because they scheduled another stop that took longer than anticipated. Additionally, I wasn't told until after loading that final payment needed to be in case. Since this move cost several thousand dollars, I should have been informed of that up front. The team lead was a nice guy and tried hard, but it's the luck of the draw on the team you get, and the management is looking to get out as cheaply as possible. I understand things happen during moves, but the management's refusal to compensate me for damages caused by their team prompted this review. read more

You've all heard the horror stories about movers - well here's one for the books. Moving to FL from NH back in September was our dream and finally got the funds together to do it. We hired this company after being a referral from Ray the Mover since our job was a smaller one. Paul the salesman came out and gave us an estimate. We accepted. The estimated price changed three times, including on the day our stuff was delivered. It was $1,100 more. Thankfully we had put aside extra money for unforeseen issues. They picked up our property on August 30th. We purchased the replacement insurance for our valued items at $40,000 which cost an additional $500 otherwise if the movers damage anything and you did not have this insurance they would pay $6 per lb. for damages. We did not have too much furniture but what we did have was in excellent shape. The delivery date was surpassed by 5 days (September 17th) without any communication from the movers. When they arrived (finally) they told us that we were the last of three households to receive a delivery. Therefore our stuff was crammed in first. They gave us a sheet to check off numbers when they called them out. First the furniture - a custom coffee table with glass insert which they packed - damaged, the lacquer split on the side which affected the integrity of the table. When we moved it the top came completely off the base. Apparently, that was not their fault because we moved it across the room! All the rest of our large furniture had experienced some form of damage. All the boxes - well it looked like they had a whole household on top of our belongings. Every single box was crushed. We packed the boxes ourselves and were told at pickup by the mover if any of those boxes gets damaged, it is not their responsibility - really? Not true so we were told after the fact by the insurance adjuster. All the items that were breakable in boxes were damaged. We threw out what we thought could not be salvaged because we did not know we could claim them. Also, there were a number of missing items which we did not find out until after the movers left. And finally - the worst case scenario - we filed a claim for all our damage and missing items. EVERYONE PLEASE TAKE NOTE - this insurance for "replacement value" is nothing more than a SCAM. The mover put everything into an adjuster's hand out of Washington State (we live in FL), they sent a furniture company to look at the damaged items, the furniture company provided an estimate for repair. We received a settlement far less than our claim amount, in fact it was pretty much a joke on what they offered. They would not honor the missing items amount and they low-balled all the rest, including giving us $130 for a $2,400 custom coffee table which is not longer useful. The additional $500 was not worth it. After all that has happened, we put this to rest in February 2014. At least this is behind us - but what a nightmare dealing with these people! This is not a very honorable or professional business and the owner should be ashamed of himself. We thought working with someone local and getting a referral from a reputable company would take out the stress and worry of moving such long distance. We're sorry to say that this is not the case with Preferred Movers. read more

I've used Preferred Movers twice. Once in the Summer of 2012, and again in the Summer of 2013. Summer of '12: Moved from my internship apartment in NH to my off-campus college house in Upstate NY. Not the best service or anything, but the money was well worth not having to lift things myself (college girl.) The crew was really nice, the team leader was friendly and helpful, and while there was a bit of a date mix-up for delivery, it all worked out okay. I figured they were good, so why not use them again when I'm moving out of this house to my new grad-school digs? Summer 2013: Absolute hell. Delayed picking me up by OVER a week. Wouldn't tell me if they were coming the next day until the driver's evening phonecall. So every night I sat in a house full of boxes, waiting until 9pm or so when this driver would say "Sorry, honey, I can't come get you tomorrow." The office (Pat B. specifically) was completely unresponsive! This driver was clearly hands-tied on this, and I felt for him. Anyway, the week of waiting goes by and they finally arrive. Oh, did I say 'they'? I meant ONE GUY! They only sent me one person for a house full of furniture. This poor man had to carry everything himself, because I wasn't allowed to help him on a liability. (I ended up helping him with some things anyway just to maneuver them around my stairs.) Keep in mind that he's loading my house into an almost-already-full truck from someone else's move. I was about to tell him just to go home by that point, but I felt bad for the guy. Clearly wasn't his fault. So now I'm going to have this stuff delivered to my storage unit, because I wasn't going to be able to move into my apartment right away. When was it scheduled? Never. They just called me one day and was like 'hey, the driver's at your unit, come unlock it for us!' Still just one guy, but this time it was the team leader from my 2012 move. He remembered me, and he was a super nice guy! I feel sorry that he has to work for such a horrible company. So apparently my belongings had to be unpacked to their warehouse and repacked onto a new truck, which was then handed over to this driver. As soon as he opened the back hatch of the truck, I watched one of my nightstands tumble, unrestrained, from the top of a pile of my stuff. Out onto the pavement, almost hitting this driver. It shattered. Poor guy looked like he was going to cry. (And so did my mom- that furniture set belonged to my grandparents!) My stuff was unloaded into the storage unit, but quite a few items were missing. Two different shelving units, a mirror, an under-bed drawer unit (structural part of one of the beds), and a mattress, not to mention the railings and slats for the other bed. Additionally, most of my boxes were crushed and obviously mishandled, even the ones labeled 'fragile'. To save an even longer story, it took almost two months of daily emails and calls to finally get the mattress, slats, and mirror back. Everything else was lost. Total value of my damaged, destroyed or lost property: Over $3000. I filled out a claim form as Pat B. informed me to. It has now been over a year of ZERO returned contact from Preferred Movers, and they have made zero reparations for the damaged, destroyed and lost property. We have even contacted them thru legal counsel. Nothing. In case you couldn't tell from this odyssey: Do not use Preferred Movers. I wish I could give them ZERO stars. They don't even deserve the one. read more
