Outstanding results from a knowledgeable and competent provider, Matt Kaplan D.O.. I drove to Austin from the Bryan/CS area to be treated and was glad I did. The staff was very professional and the whole online patient portal was user friendly for patient account set up, check in and co-pay. After he reviewed my test results, Dr.Kaplan explained in detail the medical issue that was causing my back pain, and the options available to me for treatment. I am a caretaker for another person, so while I am not a patient at this practice, I have been there for almost every appointment my client has had. The only good thing about this place are the nurses; all of them, without exception, are kind and caring folks with good bedside manner. More than I can say about the doctor himself. Dr Kaplan has to be one of the worst doctors I've ever seen as far as bedside manner. He never sat with us more than maybe 5 minutes, enough time to make notes and leave. He gave the bare minimum of attention to my client when she was talking at any point, and interrupted her constantly to cut the conversation shorter. The one and only time he acknowledged ME was before a procedure, where he asked me to tell my client (who was in another room) not to call the office with any concerns for at least 24 hours unless it was an emergency. On our last visit with him, he straight-up told my client (who by this point was in so much pain she could barely leave her apartment and was feeling the emotional distress from that) that she was too emotional for him to deal with. That other people had it way worse than her and THEY didn't cry. Lastly, he told her that even after the two tests she had been through, he would not perform the final procedure on her until she proved to him that she was on an antidepressant (???????????????????) Now the office is giving us the run-around, pushing our next appointment back a week, then another week, then saying we would have to go to a surgical center because they just don't have the tools they need. I've flat-out encouraged my client to quit giving this practice any more of her money; waiting to see a doctor who will treat her with some dignity will be 1000x better than ever seeing this doctor again. I went to Dr. Kaplan to get a second opinion on an MRI. I told the clinic receptionist that is what I wanted. My pain Dr is Dr. Shockett at Capital pain. Been with them for years and I love him and his staff. All I wanted was for him to check and see what he saw. He walked in and very abruptly asked why I was leaving Dr. Shocket is his friend. He was so rude! After I told him I just wanted a second opinion on the MRI he basically told me he couldn't help me and to just get a spinal stimulator. I have never been treated so unprofessionally before by a doctor. If your looking for a doctor to help you with your pain, I recommend Capital Pain. I am not a liar - This "doctor's" behavior was uncalled for! I've never been treated like this from ANY "doctor" in my life. I visited the clinic 3 times. The first 2 times sounded like a vet clinic because the "doctor" had his dog there barking nonstop. This did honestly make me feel like I was in a back-alley clinic, but my orthopedic doctor referred me to him for relief until I can get surgery. My first visit, I found that I couldn't get the normal pain procedures done for my back pain due to a heart condition I was recently diagnosed with so he gave me pain meds instead. The second meeting I shared with him that the strength wasn't working well and occasionally I'd take 1.5 pills instead of 1 when the pain was unbearable. He rudely told me he should drop me as a patient immediately because I didn't realize it was against the rules. I accidentally missed my next appt and called the office 3-4 times for a new appointment. I left voice messages and when I finally reached someone they told me they had voicemail issues. I set the next available appointment. When I got to my last appointment the "doctor" asked what happened. Then he told me I was lying because no one in his office told me there were phone issues and told me that he didn't believe me. He then kicked me out. I was shaking and in tears. He treated me terribly. I am not a liar and did not under any circumstance deserve to be treated that way by someone calling themselves a "medical professional". This man has no compassion at all. I've been seeing Dr Kaplan for years now due to severe fibromyalgia, sacroiliac joint dysfunction, herniated discs, osteoarthritis, and degenerative disc disease and a myriad of other autoimmune disorders that cause pain. From the first visit, Kaplan had absolutely the worst bedside manner I've ever experienced. Still, I stayed with him hoping that he could help me with pain. I tried every treatment he offered. I just recently had the SI fusion on my left side. He has prescribed opiate pain relievers to me for years now. I had the SI fusion done last month. He did not close the incision. As a result, I developed an infection and I tried desperately to reach him by phone. He never returned my call resulting in my trip to the ER at St David's. The dr there could not believe that Kaplan didn't close the incision or follow up with me. Kaplan denies that I even tried to call him. I finally got in to see Kaplan for my wound check. He never apologized or even took responsibility. Instead, he said it was the hospital's fault for not having Dermabond! Next, he says come in the back and we'll stitch it up. Yikes! I was not prepared for that. As the pics show, he did a terrible stitch job. The very next day 2 stitches came undone. I tried to reach him by phone for 2 days; no response I had to go back to the ER bc my incision was now infected. I was given antibiotics by the ER dr. That brings me to today's bombshell.... I had my monthly med refill appt. The first thing he says is "did your incision heal?" I said, "yes. Finally!" Then he says, "we have to talk about your drug screen from last time. You were positive for cocaine and I now have to drop you as a patient." I actually laughed, thinking he was joking. I've never had a positive test and he has known for years that I only use THC edibles on occasion. I've always been honest with him. I told him that I would pay for a hair test to prove that the saliva test I mailed to the lab is inaccurate, but he refused. He just dropped me and now I have no recourse bc he put in my records, "cocaine user." I am a former Paramedic and presently, a Licensed Massage Therapist and Instructor and 50 yr old grandmother. I will now have no pain doctor willing to see a "cocaine user." I have 2 suicide attempts in my past due to the depression and despair that comes from feeling like you'll never be able to escape the pain; my entire life. Dr Yun, my PCP, even sent a typed out letter directly to Kaplan that stated that a sudden "cut off" of my pain meds would be extremely harmful for me and why! See pics for the test results. He would not test me again after my requesting it or allow me to prove myself thru a blood or hair test that I offered to pay for. My whole family is upset over this and now I will lose my job bc I cannot work without help for pain. If I do commit suicide, I just want everyone to know the whole story. DO NOT go to Matthew KAPLAN. Did he just want to get rid of me so he wouldn't be liable for my ER bills? I honestly dont know what to think. I'm just shocked. UPDATE: My PCP at ARC came to my rescue and refilled my meds and allowed me to exonerate myself by ordering a new drug screen. I just uploaded the test results. I will now begin my journey for justice, preparing my complaint to be reviewed by the Texas Medical Board and go from there. I missed a week of work enduring horrible pain and depression. He was in such a rush to put Cocaine User on all of my records. Why? I've been his patient for, literally, years... why the rush to get rid of me and discredit me? I will be posting updates as they occur. I hope that somehow my experience can help someone else. My case is an abuse of power and of negligence, at the least. This is the first bad review, that I've ever left on Yelp, but this is our health so if there's an instance in which to leave an honest and critical review this would be it. Kaplan lacks compassion, so pass if that's important to you in a doctor. Good bedside manor but wasn't authentic. Never spent more than 5 minutes with me. The worst part was he started a treatment, stopped it and didn't provide me with an alternative leaving me in excruciating pain. He sent me off to a surgeon who then spit me back saying surgery wouldn't treat my pain. At that point it's like he didn't know what to do. He told me to go see a chiropractor and when I explained, that I had been seeing a chiropractor for a year he said "these guys are better, they're really good." I was already seeing a highly regarded chiropractor and so Kaplan just lost all credibility with me at that point. Thankfully I have a friend who also deals with chronic pain and he recommended to me his pain doctor, for a second opinion. My pain is now being treated, I have a treatment plan and there's a light at the end of the tunnel for me. The odd thing is my neck and spine issues are not that unusual and my current pain doctor never seemed to be baffled like Kaplan. I really can't tell you what his deal is but I guess it's like any other role, some people are good at it and other not so much. I shudder to think about anyone else going thru what I did, so please do your homework and be selective. If you're reading this you're probably in pain. Do not go here if you're in pain. This doctor specifically said "I don't give opiate pain management to 37 year olds". So clearly if you're not old enough to to be in pain then you're out of options. Also I'd say if you're dealing with back problems early in life. Avoid this place because if your issues deteriorated like mine you're left looking for a new doctor at an awful time. You don't want to be laying in bed searching for a new doctor because someone can't see pain from a few disc problems on an X-ray. I was also never told that I have a spinal issue that can be addressed with a brace before it gets too bad. This doctor also provides Ketamine pain management at the office. However I'm not sure the atmosphere of the office is suitable for Ketamine as you really want to be in a comfortable space. I've yet to see anything there that is even close to Ketamine providers like Illumma or Klarisana here in Austin where lots of pain staking detail is put into the environment. read more

I have been suffered from severe rib pain for few years. After ruling out everything from gallstones to acid refux (I didn't buy that one either but a gastroenterologist insisted.) - primary physician (and the gastro) sent me to see a pain specialist for intercoastal nerve blocks. The first Pain Specialist I saw ordered thousands of dollars in tests and told me I needed a thoracic injection. I had the injection - but had zero improvement. When I did my followup exam - he literally crossed his arms and told me my pain was too widespread for intercoastal blocks - and said he couldn't help me. I found Dr Kaplan at Preferred Spine and Pain. We immediately arranged to do the injections I should have had in the first place. After the blocks (the injections I needed all along), I have a 75% improvement rate and am actually doing things like going out with my husband and preparing meals again. His staff is very kind. Dr. Kaplan keeps assuring me he'll get me feeling better. (and I am!) I am very new to Pain Management - and work full-time - so it's such a relief to no longer be white-knuckling ever minute of my life because of pain. read more

I was referred to Dr. Kaplan from the Ortho I was seeing. It was easy to make an appointment and get in quickly. He was to the point and no nonsense. I went out to an MRI and saw him again all within a week of the initial appointment. When I returned he got eight to business. Explained in layman's terms what was wrong and went over my options. He wasn't pushing to rush me out which is appreciated. His front office staff are personable and helpful. He addressed my concerns and helped me tremendously. read more

I called around to find a spine Dr. for a couple of days and finally Dr. Kaplan was referred to me. Dr. Kaplan's Assistance Molly, got me scheduled in so quickly. I was in dire pain. Dr. Kaplan saw me, sent me to get an MRI at Longhorn Imaging that very same day. The results came back that day, and Dr. Kaplan called me with the results. I was diagnosed with a Lumbar Annular Tear in my L5, which is incredibly painful. Dr. Kaplan got me in Monday morning for a steroid injection via epidural. I left the very next day on a weeks trip to Costa Rica and had relieved pain because of Dr. Kaplan. I am so lucky to have found Dr. Kaplan. He has great 'bedside' manners and his office staff is amazing as well!! I highly recommend Preferred Spine and Pain. read more

Also trouble with billing department, have been accused of missing payment and I have to go dig and bring proof of payment. So today he told me he is tired of it and to find another doctor. Great. Let's start from the very beginning, shall we? When you first get into the waiting room of Dr. Kaplan's "office" aka Reavis Rehab & Wellness Clinic - because he rents a tiny space in there with a small sign that says "Preferred Spine and Pain" - you wait in line for 10-15 minutes just as you would for the Rehab side of things. Once you finally get into the waiting room it's full of screaming children and other people. Did I mention that it's hot as ever? This is Texas. Turn on the A/C! This poor elderly woman beside me is gasping because the air is so thick. Once you wait an hour to two hours, you're finally pulled back. Yes this is a nearly two hour affair - unless you ask when you are next. Then each time you are magically next. My first appointment with Dr. Kaplan was abrupt and he obviously didn't read any of my medical history that was referred over by my rheumatologist to begin with (I have fibromyalgia/chronic pain). He then looked at my weight and assumed I was lying when I said I had lost 55lbs. He changed me to a medication I blatantly told him made me sick and lethargic. He assumed that it was the quick release capsule that was making me sick and put me on extended release. I tried to argue with him, but instead trusted that maybe he knew what he was doing. That was when he put me on physical therapy. I advised that I go to the gym three times a week, sometimes four and one of those days is always with a trainer who has a master trainer's license. I lift 200lbs with my legs and 50lbs with my arms. He still say I needed physical therapy. So I trusted him and went to the physical therapy where Anna - who is sweet as can be - guided me through STRETCHES and advised I also do AQUATIC STRETCHES. Are you kidding me? No. I'm not paying $60 a week for stretches that I do at the gym four times a week and pay a trainer for. That's ridiculous. Not only that, but he had ordered an MRI for me. I have had several MRIs due to going through cancer. So I know the drill and figured he just wanted updated scans. I paid nearly $300 (actually my mother did because I am so broke that I couldn't afford it) and he didn't even remember to send in that I needed sedation due to the fact that I am extremely claustrophobic. My second appointment comes (this is Thursday 5/07/15) and again it's the waiting room game. There was a new nurse this time and she treated me as though I were a new patient instead of coming in for a SCHEDULED FOLLOW UP. "What brings you in today?" Uh, I was told to come in. "Have you had any imaging done recently such as an MRI or a body scan?" Um...yes....that's what I'm here to follow up on. "What medications are you taking?" Can you please bring the doctor in and also let him know I don't think physical therapy will work for me? So finally she leaves and we wait another 20 minutes (after an hour in the waiting room) for him to come in. He only came in, by the way, when I opened the door to make it more obvious we were waiting and I had to be at another appointment at 5:30pm. My appointment here was 3:30pm. Plenty of time right? Wrong. When he came in he said "I'm not going to argue with you on physical therapy but you do have arthritis in your lower back like I knew you would have. So you're going to need some injections in the back that are severely painful." He said this all while not showing me the MRI and not explaining why all of a sudden - after several full body scans - one that was even a couple months ago - I have arthritis. This is not an affliction that just magically appears. It develops over years. I agreed to the injections as to not argue with him anymore and vowed never to come back. PS. I got the MRI scans sent to my chiropractor and he says there's nothing there. What a vindictive jerk of a doctor. read more

Felt like the doctor just wanted me to leave and had no interest in what I was saying. Exhibited no interest in any problem solving. Told me it was just anxiety when he seemed like he was the one who was a nervous wreck and stressed out. Basically did not help me at all and dismissed everything I told him. That's fine if it's not your specialty at least show some interest and try. And I'm not sure he lists on his website he treats muscle pain and back pain when he doesn't appear to at all. I told him I had those symptoms and he had really nothing to say about it. In all fairness no other doctor has been able to figure it out but you could tell they were genuinely concerned for my well being at least and offered to do what they could. This person really came off as not caring at all about helping anyone. Visit was, " Xrays show nothing. I'm just an x ray reader, can't help you." I've gone for back injections and Nerve blocks for over 20 years. Dr. Matthew Kaplan is the best at relieving pain EVER. I cannot take anesthesia and Dr. Kaplan has found a solution to fit my limitations. I have gone to see him over a year and I had grown to distrust other doctors from bad experiences in not placing the injection where it made any noticeable difference. Not so with Dr. Kaplan!!! He has given me injections which really relieved the pain that ran down my back into my legs. His outstanding, compassionate care allowed me to do intensive physical therapy and I have gone from living in a wheelchair to be independent again so I can walk without even my cane right after his uncanny ability to get right to the source of the pain!!! I became a patient of Dr Kaplan's for two years. I was very unhappy with my current pain specialists and my hand surgeon recommended Dr Kaplan. After just one appointment I knew my search was over. Dr Kaplan is always very attentive to my needs, he works hand in hand with my other specialists and is always quick to to reply to any phone calls or emails. His staff is great too, there have been many issues with my insurance and they always handle it quickly and have no problem dealing with the insurance so I don't have too. If I need to be seen on an urgent basis, they always accommodate for emergencies! As a long time patient ( his 59th ) I have to say that I have NEVER had a problem of ANY kind during my appointments. I never saw more than three people in the wait area or even once heard a child's voice. Never felt physically uncomfortable . In fact, I have never had a negative thought while there other than I hope I have enough pee for the cup.... And I am a glass half empty person. So I really feel for her (Sara p. ) having such a tough time. An anomaly. Dr. Kaplan is is his new digs and has the expected number of staff to support him. I haven't met even ONE clunker, all of them are super. The doctor always hears me out and actually remembers what I say or have said in the past, which is more than I can say for myself. I will add that he does not suffer fools....if you are looking for drugs he can spot you coming in the door. He had me see a psychologist before he would take me on as I was a mess and on high dose oxy from a pain dr. Who fired me for fear I might use his drugs to commit suicide. So drug seeking and stressed and uber-anxiety issues ? What a challenge ! It worked and I'm on less than half the meds and working to lower that. I have him to thank and hopefully I do. Thanks dr. Dr. Kaplan is great. It was my first time seeing him. He really listened and during my appointment he came up with a plan to try and help manage my pain. His staff is very welcoming and helpful. As with first appointments, there is usually a lot to process and after leaving your appointment you find yourself saying "oh I should have asked....." I called in about an hour after my appointment with a few more questions and I spoke with Kim. She was more than helpful. I didnt feel as if she was trying to rush me off the phone. she was very patient and answered my questions above and beyond. The staff communicates with you in letting you know the status of things so you're not left wondering what's going on. Which I really appreciate. I highly recommend Dr. Kaplan. I spent several days in a trauma rated Austin hospital with very acute and debiliating pain due to multiple fractures with marginal success. Dr. Matthew Kaplan, Preferred Spine and Pain, was finally brought in to consult on pain management. He immediately and compassionatily understood the severity of my pain, and instituted an appropriate and very sucessful pain management regime. He understood the nature of the injuries, and offered both encouragement and an understanding of what we needed to do over the upcoming months of healing. He is obviously well trained in APPROPRIATE pain control, and recognizes that pain, whether it is acute (and time limited as mine fortunately is) or chronic, is a degrading, debiliating condition that interfers with the body's ability to heal. He is sincerely concerned about his patient's comfort, follows through, takes his time with you, and actually listens. We wish him well as he builds his practice in the Austin area. read more
