When our Dad made the difficult decision to sell his condo and move to a Senior Living location, we visited multiple Senior Living homes but kept returning to The Glenn Hopkins. Scott and the wonderful Marketing Team were very patient, allowing us to visit multiple times as they understood this was a major decision for our Dad and family. Dad chose The Glenn because it felt like home and we knew he would be cared for very well. Dad spent the first five months in The Towers. He was so happy with his one bedroom w/den and couldn't get over the fact that he was being served meals in a dining room with white linen tablecloths. It felt like he was dining out every day. In June, Dad had to move to The Terraces Assisted Living where he lived for the next 10 months. Sandra, Julie, and Jen were so fantastic and accommodating as he required many schedule changes based on his changing health. Dad formed many friendships with the other residents during his time at The Glenn. They looked out for each other and we are thankful for his wonderful neighbors. He also made many friendships with the staff who cared for him. It takes very special people to do all that the nurses and aides do every day and to do it with love and patience. Dad made the choice that if something happened he did not want to go to the hospital. Instead, after suffering a stroke, he spent his final days in his home being cared for by the people who knew him and cared about him. Our family is OVERWHELMED by the love and support that was shown to our Dad and us during his final days, and the days that followed as we planned his service and moved his belongings out of his apartment. It was a steady stream of staff and neighbors who came to show their love for him and say goodbye. The staff also provided so much comfort and support to our family each day. They shared stories of their family members, gave us lots of hugs, and told us "we cared for your Dad how we would want our Dad to be treated". It was very touching when some of the staff took their personal time and came to the funeral service. The Glenn was an extension of our family and we knew Dad was loved and received exceptional care every day. Dad frequently said "God brought me to The Glenn". We are thankful this is where he lived and thankful to everyone who touched his and our family's lives. Two years ago I decided I wanted to live closer to my children and to downtown Minneapolis, so I sold my town home in Elk River. I no longer wanted to own real estate, thought about finding an apartment, but I'm 84 and knew I'd need services at some point even though I don't now. I have 8 children and the thought of their trying to decide "what to do with Mother" made me feel I should be the one to decide. I shopped around a lot and found the Glenn by far the most appealing senior residence. I still don't NEED any of their services, but I use the shuttle a lot, have learned to navigate the Metro buses and can get around so easily that I sold my car six months ago. What pleases me most is 1) the opportunity to volunteer here as much or little as I wish, 2) the ability to be as social (or not) as I like and to my great surprise 3) the wooded surroundings and splendidly maintain grounds. I like to walk and never tire of this area. And don't get me started on the city of Hopkins! It puts Elk River to shame, with many good restaurants, a movie theater, an art center with concerts and events for all ages, a grocery store, hardware store, drug store that delivers, specialty shops and a half dozen antique shops as well as a branch of the Hennepin Library system. (We have a fine library in our own building, too, with quarterly deliveries of books from the Hennepin system as well as hundreds of books that have been donated to us.) I am Catholic and was delighted to find a "church home" here. Last of all (perhaps it should be first) the entire staff is not only competent but very, very kind. Every one I've met will go many extra miles to be helpful.

Monika, Lubo, and Ema showed their love and affection for my grandma by calling her Babi Rosie, which means granny in Czech. I witnessed Monika being very diligent by taking her Golder Years residents to local community events such as the church festivals, town celebrations, and local art and crafts shows. My favorite activity of all was when the local musicians and singers would come to Golden Years for an intimate concert for both the residents and their families. Many times, during our visits we would hear polka music along with Czech conversations, singing, and laughter while smelling the wonderful aroma of fresh baked bread. I realize this is a lengthy review, but I hope prospective residents, families, and employees take…read morethe time to read it. (My comments are based on my firsthand experience working at Oak Park Senior Living for over a year and a half.) Because choosing a senior living community is such an important decision, I encourage everyone to do their own research. In addition to reading employee and family reviews, please review any publicly available inspection reports and state investigation records...there are some. Some of the concerns I describe are consistent with issues that have been the subject of public state investigations. My hope is simply that families have as much information as possible before entrusting a loved one to any facility. I worked at Oak Park Senior Living for approximately 2 years. During that time, I met many wonderful residents and families, and those relationships were the most rewarding part of my job. The food was very good, and I gained lots of valuable experience as a caregiver. Unfortunately, my experience with leadership was very different: Throughout my employment, I (as well as fellow caregivers/kitchen/housekeeping) observed an ongoing of staffing shortages, inconsistent communication between departments, LOTS of favoritism and unfair treatment resulting in job losses for some former staff members, and a work environment where employee concerns often did not seem to be addressed effectively, or at all. These issues created unnecessary stress for staff and, in my opinion, impacted the quality of care residents deserved, and yet not received. I (as well as fellow caregivers/kitchen/housekeeping) also felt there was a huge lack of transparency, accountability, integrity during difficult situations, and I often saw problems handled reactively instead of proactively. We were told to be quiet about situations "and do not speak of...." with fellow staff. Many residents I spoke with on a daily basis expressed concerns about how the facility was being managed and felt it had the potential to be much better. One additional observation is that a few of the promotional photos for food on the facility's website appeared outdated compared to what I experienced while working there. The food itself was genuinely delicious, and the dietary staff worked hard, but the presentation shown online does not really reflect the meals that were typically served. My criticism is directed at the leadership team as a whole--not at the residents or hardworking caregiving/kitchen/housekeeping staff. There are many compassionate caregivers, nurses, dietary staff, and housekeeping employees who genuinely care about the people who live there! I sincerely hope the facility invests in stronger (or altogether diffeleadership, better communication, and adequate staffing, because the residents deserve the highest standard of care.

$14,000/month should at least get you a private room but the shared room is really my only…read morecomplaint. He lives in a space half the size of my bedroom. They have no storage areas for residents as many other homes do so he can only have what fits in his room. Most of the staff is very friendly. They all know my dad and always tell me how sweet he is. He had an issue with one worker, I called in for something else and mentioned this to the person I was talking to, and the next day the administrator and the head nurse had addressed it and called me to update. They label all his clothes I bring in for him and do laundry there every week or so. Everything is included. The coordinator Rochelle who sets up his appointments and transportation when needed is wonderful. She also helps him when he has a video appointment. The food seems decent and they come by every day to set up his meals for the next day. If he doesn't like something that's scheduled he can order an alternative like a cheeseburger or something else. I bought him a fridge so he can have his Coke in his room but they also have a vending machine for pop and snacks. I haven't been able to visit as often as I like due to my own health and disability but they keep me updated and he likes participating in the activities they have for patients like bingo and different crafts. I know it's a hard transition for most people to lose their independence and most nursing homes are not ideal unless you are a millionaire. But if you're on Medicaid (which they will help you apply for) it's not bad and my dad seems happy most of the time. All his income goes to the facility and MA covers the rest. He gets ~$130 a month for incidentals but I try to provide him with what he needs.

My Mom's final choice really came down to wanting to be in the city center vs somewhere more peaceful. Amy could not have been more kind, helpful, and professional. She was clear in communications which I am grateful for as this was a complicated move with all the emotions and demands on my personal life. She really helped lead the way on next steps in a collaborative way that made my life easier and really improved my confidence in our steps as a family and in this team and facility. Also, the connection to Fairview is very positive for us as it is deeply embedded in Minnesota as a care provider which is also important.
