First off, I don't believe in reviewing medical facilities for the very obvious reasons of we don't always like the answers we get and we can't base our rating on that. I fully trust in the professionals. However, we recently transferred our father to this facility due to the situation and facility he was in prior to entering Kindred. From the moment we walked in the door, we were greeted with professionalism. The nurses and doctors on staff were always attentive to his needs and did an amazing job at communicating with us. Not too shortly after, his health took a turn for the worse so he was transferred to the ICU unit. There, he received top notch care. The nursing staff was more than accommodating, attentive, communicative and professional. Most of all, calm and empathetic to the situation. He didn't end up making it out but I will say that the treatment and care that my father received was something I've never seen before. The doctor made sure to call me everyday to talk about treatment plans, status, etc. The nurses never hesitated to answer questions and give us updates. The facility itself is well run and clean. I honestly felt an open door policy with the admin staff as well. I would recommend this place in a heart beat. I couldn't have asked for anything better for my dad throughout the last few weeks of his life. read more

After spending almost three weeks in the Acute Section of Kindred Brea, on October 2, 2024, it was determined by my doctor that I could be safely moved to the Sub-Acute Section. The care that I received there was totally different than the care I received in the Acute Section. I feel that CNA Brenda helped me more than I can even put into words. She was A+ excellent! There were less patients in this Section compared to the Acute Section. In addition, those of us there no longer needed the intense medical interventions that we previously needed. For me, that meant that I was no longer on a drip IV antibiotic, but rather on just swallowing one antibiotic capsule daily. This represented a move in the right direction or to say it better, one last step before being given the go-ahead to go home! Once again Victoria, the Patient Advocate was by my side in every manner. When I had a complaint, she listened. When I had something good to say, she listened. She was fabulous!! While this section had a smaller gym than the Acute Section, I feel as though more positive goals and accomplishments for me were met in this gym. I was introduced to Amir and two of his assistants, Daniela and Genevieve, in this gym. If there can be a grade over and above A+, that's what I give to Amir. He didn't care if I said I was in too much pain to do anything. He made me do the therapy anyway, which in the end, made me feel so much better. He took me from a five to at least an eight in approximately a week and a half. Amir, you are the best!!! However, as nice as this all sounded, one thing remained the same. The food service was almost never correct. I continued to receive items I didn't order. The last few days I was there, the Food Service Manager personally delivered to me my meals, making sure I was getting what I would eat. There was no variety. For the most part, I was given either a cheese quesadilla or a little cheese pizza, along with two cups of watermelon. While I liked that, it did get a little boring having the same thing day in and day out. Aside from the food service, everything and everyone in this Section helped me to recover to the point that, on October 12th, I was given the green light to go home. The L- tract unit has taken extraordinary care of my elderly mother. They treat her well and she is really starting to come around. I have transferred my mother out of several facilities due to neglect. This place has done what 6 other facilities have failed to do in rehabilitating my mother. I'm a Covid-19 survivor ! I had ARDS, Acute Respiratory Failure, Atrial Fibrillation, Global Weakness, Aphonia and bilateral Hearing Loss, all due to Covid infection. I went through about 42 medically induced coma days at St Jude ICU - Fullerton and was transferred to Kindred Subacute Transitional Care Unit/Hospital of Brea for rehabilitation. I feel blessed to be taken cared of at this "Five Star Medicare-rated " health facility. I'm thankful to my Case Manager, Rodney, the Nursing and Respiratory Staff and most especially to the Rehab Team - Amir (Director) with Francis and Adriana. The rehab team are knowledgable in their field of specialty. The graded tasks/exercises given me were explained clearly. Every week I listened as they set and discussed therapy goals for me. Daily they assessed my improvement and offered on-the-spot corrective rehab measures and accident prevention strategies. In all the therapy sessions, they conducted themselves with patience, diligence, and utmost respect for their patients. In the rehab gym, I observed that the tasks/exercises offered to patients were patient-specific. Of significance, the team encouraged and cultivated a cheerful workplace. The rehab program is family-friendly and includes depression prevention strategies, i.e. outdoor exercises, tele-sessions (Facetime/Zoom) with family members and even painting activities. In less than three months of therapy, this rehab team transformed me from a patient with global weakness (on admission, I could hardly lift the TV remote much less change the TV channels) to one who now walks under supervision with minimal use of a walker. If I were made to rate this rehab team on a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 rated as excellent and 1 rated as poor, I certainly would give them a rating of 10 !!! Without doubt, I shall strongly recommend Kindred Subacute Transitional Care Unit/Hospital for its Rehab Team to all my friends, colleagues, and acquaintances. read more

I can't remember the last time I have given a company a 1 star rating. If you are searching for a facility for an incapacitated loved one, and do not expect them to return home, then Kindred Hospital may be the place for you. If you are wanting a hospital to help your loved one rehabilitate to return home, then you may want to steer away from this place. To make a long story short, my father was admitted 1 1/2 weeks ago after undergoing 2 surgeries. After 5 days of trying to get him transferred, on 1/20/2022 I was finally successful at getting him relocated. From day one @ Kindred he felt that he was in a place that was lacking in care and waiting for him to die. He explained that the staff rarely came to his room. The first time I visited him I was there for 3 hours. The only person that came to his room within that time was a security guard at 6:05 PM telling me visiting hour's are over. That was concerning to me. I contacted his case manager to learn about his care. What was explained by staff and what actually occurred was not true. This place is very re-active as opposed to being pro-active to patients needs. In 1 1/2 weeks my father ended up with a horrible cough and my sister had to recommend a inhaler cough treatment (RE-ACTIVE!). After 2 surgeries & being in Kindred for a week, by my 2nd visit he still had not been given a Lung exerciser device to prevent pneumonia until I asked for one 4 1/2 hours in to my visit, from the respiratory therapist that finally arrived (he then proceeded to tell me how much my father needed one) RE-ACTIVE!. What really shocked me was that my father told me he hadn't received his Trilogy medication for his COPD from them, I asked the nurse why he is not receiving it, & was told they do not carry it in "their pharmacy" so instead they prescribed in 3 other SEPARATE medications to cover that one! OMG$$! I asked "Couldn't you have it filled from an outside pharmacy?!" & of course, they said yes they could & would if I brought the Trilogy he had been taking to them, which I did & they labeled his at their pharmacy. RE-ACTIVE! I had arrived to visit him at 11:20am and discovered his cell phone missing. By 1:45pm no one had arrived I could inquire with, or even to flip him to prevent bed sores, which I was informed by social worker Kelly, case manager Janice & staff that they flip him every 2 hours. Absolutely not true! Just him being there 1 1/2 weeks, when We finally got him transferred, the new hospital informed us of a sore forming on his rear end & he now is required to use a special mattress. Kindred informed me that they don't provide physical therapy on weekends (even though his insurance covers him 7 days a week), when he was complaining to me about no one helping him. Monday was a holiday, so my father ended up laying in that bed from Saturday -Monday! His cell phone was never located, & when I complained, one male nurse informed me that he had seen it the night prior. It is like pulling teeth sometimes trying to reach him by the admin phones to reach his room. This is when I started searching for a different facility. I feel Kindred was dragging their feet to finalize approval of his transfer. Don't ever wait for them to get the ball rolling on a transfer, take the initiative. I'd really hate to believe that this was so they could continue receiving his insurance money, but that sure is what it felt like. Glory be to God that he is no longer at Kindred hospital & he already feels at peace and cared for at his new location, and says the food tastes much better! Good luck to anyone receiving care at this facility. read more

Horrific. Terrible place to lose a loved one. Supplies were limited and inadequate. Some of the staff were good, but they were learning. Some were a little caring, but to most you were (as a advocate for your loved one) a total hindrance. Even when I bent over backwards to be nice. Medication was often late, at one point leading my entire family to a terribly tragic trauma. (It's hard listing to your loved one screaming to die because they are in pain) pharmacy is closed on weekends, so if it wasn't planned they cannot or will not get it for you. Doesn't matter if your loved one is in pain. They say they are open 24/7, but that is very misleading, as you cannot stay with your loved one over night. They have a security guard that kicks everyone out around 7 or 8 pm, for shift change, for one hour. Then again when around 9-10. The place is filthy, I never saw anyone clean the floors/bathroom once while I was there for a week. Strange stains in the bathroom, in the floor...I cleaned the floor, and it was absolutely covered with god knows what, blood, feces, the floor was sticky. Computers in the room were broken. To the people that own this place: You need to try harder. There are things you can never take back. Things I will never be able to get out of my head. Listening to my loved one scream in pain, begging to die is unacceptable. Especially when I know it could have been avoided. THERE IS NOTHING YOU CAN DO TO MAKE THIS RIGHT. You are terrible people and should be ashamed. My aunt deserved better. I hope one day you experience what you put my family thru. I think it might be the worst possible thing you could have done to us. This will haunt me for the rest of my life. I can only hope the people reading this can avoid this place, as were didn't know any better read more

I cannot praise their Physical Therapy Department enough for the incredible care and support he has received during his rehabilitation journey. Leading the department is Amir along with his exceptional staff Danial and Marjorie. They have taken the time to thoroughly assess his condition and understand his specific needs. My Dad started in ICU and now currently is in the subacute unit. This review and 5 star rating is for Amir and Frances and the physical therapist crew working with my dad regularly. I feel it is important to share the amount of genuine care they give and have given from the day he was moved to this unit. Amir and Frances make a beautiful team and they both share the same level of patience and advocacy for their patients. I believe they will get my dad ready and able to come home. I was admitted to Kindred SubAcute in Brea and spent a month. The care is absolutely professional. Received excellent care with compassion. During my stay whenever I pressed my call button helps arrives immediately with professionalism. Any concerns I had with meds or care the nursing staff contacted my doctor. I received adjustments and attention after a short time. They have many types of activities to help patients feel attached to the real world. They will take you out on the patio for sunshine and gardening activities. They have 3 meals a day : 7am, 12, and 5. Food is very nourishing. Bathroom is cleaned. Room is cleaned everyday. Kindred Subacute unit in Brea is filled with absolutely wonderful staff, caring people, and a kind atmosphere. My mom was at St. Jude Hospital in Fullerton with bilateral pneumonia, transferred to Kindred Hospital, and then transferred to Kindred Subacute unit. Of all the places she received care, by far the staff at Kindred Subacute where above and beyond the most kind, genuinely caring people. The front desk staff are so nice and helpful, so from the moment I walked in the door, I felt welcomed. After a while, the front desk people knew me well enough to have my visitor sticker ready for me. Amir (Director of the Physical Therapy department) was very attentive and encouraging of my mom and went above and beyond -- my mom celebrated a birthday at Kindred Subacute, and Amir arranged to decorate the room with a "Happy Birthday" banner. Aimee and Marjorie delivered the absolute best Physical and Occupational therapy and invented games to make the therapy fun. My mom said that she never felt stressed at OT or PT when she was in the care of these ladies who always looked out for her, treated her with respect, and were attentive to her safety and O2 levels. Daniel was also great with assisting my mom with PT. In general, the entire PT/OT experience was wonderful, and the patients encouraged each other because the staff fostered an environment of positivity and celebrations of small victories in the overall recovery process. The CNAs are also so kind and helpful. They respond to call button requests so very quickly (so much quicker than St. Jude), and though I don't unfortunately know the names of all of them, they were all wonderful: particularly Brigite, Liliah, and Clarice, who my mom said were very kind and would not only attend to her needs, but would also talk with her while they were assisting her. Celeste, the Respiratory Therapist, was so nice to help train me about what my mom will need at home, and Marichi the social worker made sure everything was coordinated with the medical equipment my mother requires to come home and was always available by phone to answer my questions. Judith, the Activities Director, does a wonderful job of personally connecting with patients and providing opportunities for interaction. Judith provided a daily newsletter that my mom loved reading, and because Judith arranged a salon service day, my mom was even able to get her hair colored before coming home so she feels more like herself. I would highly recommend Kindred Subacute Unit in Brea. I cannot say enough wonderful things about this place and how much it helped my mother. They definitely helped rehabilitate her and provided not only the highest quality care, but also a personal connection with compassion! read more

Our daughter was sent to Kindred Subacute Brea after a devastating stroke. Initially she was not a candidate for rehab as she was semi comatose on arrival.  Their physical therapy department therapist Amir convinced them that she was too young not to try. Are we glad they did! Not only did Amir and Daniel get her awake but they progressed from comatose to walking in a few months! She can talk, eat, walk with assistance and much more. Everyone here is great from the Nursing staff, to the personal assistants. Judith in social activities kept her spirits up. Respiratory therapy got her off the vent and tracheostomy removed. Everyone worked together to help her get ready for whatever is next. She was in medical school when this happened and she is determined to continue this endeavor soon! Thank you. read more

If I could I would put 0 stars. My grandma came here after 2 weeks at st. jude. She was doing good so coming here was the next step to get her home. After 3 days of being her she had more infections than being at st. jude. She eventually wasn't able to talk anymore and could barely keep her eyes open. We talked about our concerns with this place everyday making sure the nurses did what they said they were gonna do. If one of us wasn't there then it wouldn't happen. And hate to say it she ended up passing away a few days ago. They did not care and give her what she needed to get better. If you want a loved one to make it home to you don't bother coming here. read more

Do not bring anyone you care about here. There should not be so many people that have no idea what's going on. Most of the time they ignore you. It is poorly run and even if the nurses care they are so engrained on wrong protocol that they have their hands tied. It's beyond sad to see your loved one being treated like they are not human. My mom was brought in yesterday to this Brea facility as a patient and a survivor of ARDS. My worst nightmare just started. My mom was a patient at Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach and had the best treatment for her condition until now. I can't even explain in words how horrified I am right now. I just called and spoke to a "supervisor nurse" and asked her if she knows what ARDS is...unfortunately for her, she did not put me on hold correctly and heard her ask her assistant to look it up. Yep...not a clue. Instead she chose to argue with me when I questioned her and hung up on me. What is wrong with this picture? Red flags??? I demand answers from someone from this corporation immediately. read more

My father is in the subacute unit and I must say the help and support of Amir and Francis are beyond expectation. Both men go out of their way to work with my dad, to communicate with me ( his daughter) and the best part is they make me feel so confident in how they are caring for him , that when I am not there, I know he is safe and in good hands. They are professionals who are working with people, who like my dad, may be frail. Their expertise, as well as their heart for others is very present. Amir is the director but he has time to update me even if had seen my father at another time during the day. I am thankful for both men and look forward to the continued improvement of my father. read more

DO NOT GO HERE IF YOU WANT TO SEE YOUR RELATIVE WALK OUT OR DIE WITH DIGNITY - their visiting hours & days vary and mandate vaccine. They regulate patients treatments according how bad their condition is. They never pick up the phones to set appointments to visit, your relatives never improves, you never see nurses checking them or therapies. They brief you a pretty story. When you arrive they make you wait and hold you up while they make patient look pretty but my relative always with new cuts, bruises, swollen knees or cheeks or hand or arms. ITS PRETTY BAD!!! They seem to care more for the patients that speak and conscious but not for the ones that don't. My relative always having to be in emergency, isolated alone in a warm room, keep eyes open and watch how your relative tends to deteriorate. They know how to hide their carelessness by controlling your visiting time & days and using the pandemic as a reason for doing so. It's worse than hospitals. Bottom line... ITS ALL ABOUT THE MONEY, they don't care for you, your feelings or relatives. They give you a cheap gown child side for protection. read more

My grandmother was placed here and that was one of the worst decisions we could have made. The nurse in charge of taking care of her simply did not want to do her job. They would let her sit in her filth for well over 45 minutes on multiple occasions. And that was with family present so I can only imagine how they treat their helpless, elderly patients. I understand it's not an easy job and I respect those who do this work, but these people got into the wrong business. Once she started showing progress they removed her medicine "since she Is doing better" mind you.. this medicine was necessary to clean her out, since her organs are failing. One one occasion they buzzed the nurse to check on her because she kept gurgling and struggled to breathe (basically the death rattle) and they had the audacity to say Stop Calling Them. Complete Unprofessional. Now that shes been transferred the new doctor cannot fathom how she is still fighting, they've never seen a more septic patient in their career. My husband is currently in the sub acute rehab section at Kindred Brea. He was transferred to this facility from St Jude..he was initially on the hospital side and transferred to the rehab side about 2 weeks ago. First off their visitation hrs suck. But I realize its mostly because of covid. My husband recently had a ileostomy bag installed after he had complications from a colon surgery. He also has a history of 3 strokes so he doesn't have the ability to determine if the bag is full or not. He has had times ..at least 6 that I know of . Where the bag filled with air (and fecal matter)and exploded. I have asked and called multiple staff members to please check his bag more often. Was told sure we can do that.. next 2 days..it popped every night. Spoke with him today and he asked a staff member if he could check his bag...the response was...LET IT EXPLODE and laughed as he walked out. Thank goodness he is being discharged soon. He does have a few great CNAs that really like him and help him. But all in all I would not recommend this facility...unfortunately since he was on IV nutrition this is the only place that would take him. Oh by the way..he was exposed to Covid by employees thank goodness he has been testing negative..but has now tested positive for a fungal infection that was brought in. So far no symptoms. read more

My experience with Kindred Hospital Brea was reassuring and gave me hope that my grandma would be well taken care of and in the ideal facility to heal and return home. My father received outstanding care at Kindred Brea Subacute. It's very difficult when your father gets an illness which requires prolonged hospital care. From my first call with Vince the Executive Director of the facility, I knew my dad was going to the right place. All the staff were incredibly kind and caring to my dad and my family. They did whatever they could to rehabilitate my dad. Vince went above and beyond to help us in any way. The nurses, PT/OT, and speech therapist were amazing as well. This is the place that he needs and where he is goi g the to get back to his health to go home. I have looked and I have been to several hospitales and the care at Kindred it's like we are family. Their staffing it's professional, team players, always there for the patient t and the family. RT it's excellent, Isabella, the speech Therapist she is amazing, their rehab incredible.
