Update from 4 years ago: The food is still very good. However, I'm not a fan of the 3 or 4 course only options for $87 and $107 (no A La Carte option) - one of which is dessert. If you want to swap out the dessert for a starter, they charge you an extra $12. Have a bottle of wine or a couple of drinks each your check will be over $300 w/ tip for two people (3 course without dessert option). With the 3 course option at $87, is the starter $25, entree $45 and dessert $17? That's a bit pricey - especially when one of the entree's is Cauliflower). Again, the food is good but at their price point they are in the same if not higher end of a Michelin restaurant (which they are not). That said one would expect the service to justify the higher prices. The servers are friendly and professional, but at these prices one would expect a bit more. For example, instead of just plopping down the food and walking away it would be nice if there was a bit more engagement by explaining/reiterating what the dish just served entails. I've been to several high end restaurants and it is a nice touch by the servers when they explain your meal giving the patrons a sense they are in lock step with the kitchen. Where do I even begin? This place is phenomenal... the ambiance, the staff, the food... I wasn't sure what to expect. I saw a few different menus online, heard great things about this place from friends... and was looking for someplace new for dinner so we decided to check it out. We went with 3 course- Choose from an app or pasta, a main dish and a dessert. I decided to try something new so I went with the venison osso bucco. My husband ordered the beef cheek. Both were delicious. The venison was so tender I could cut it with a fork!! I wasn't sure what to expect venison to taste like- but it was so flavorful, and earthy. Nothing I'd ever expect. What a hidden gem Terriffville has. It's like Mid town Manhattan meets podunk Ct (and I mean that as a compliment). From start to finish, this place is perfection and is a fabulous addition to the Hartford county area. The staff is 5 star. Friendly, highly professional, helpful, patient and informative. If you leave the table, you'll come back to find your linen napkin folded and placed as when you just sat down. We had the three course meal. Everything was absolutely delicious. Five stars are not enough! I love Present Company! My husband and I go every chance we get a chance. We personally love sitting at the bar so we can interact with the chefs and see their techniques. PC is a well-oiled machine, the layers of flavor in each dish, the plating, and the service are all top-notch. No matter which pre-fix you select they never rush you out for the next seating. How many times have you taken food out of a frying pan or off of a grill and put it on a plate? Sitting at Present Company's "Chef's Table" tonight, we saw the chefs do this dozens of times, as well as swoosh on a ribbon of sauce or sprinkle on some finishing garnishes. The thing that impressed us was the degree of care and detail and precision they displayed to make sure that everything was placed "just so" and make those plates magazine-cover worthy. Our anniversary dinner was easily a five star experience. Service was incredible, starting with our very personable server Sarah, who knew the menu and beer and wine lists forwards and backwards and inside and out and upside down. She was very attentive, very helpful and as pleasant as could be. The Chef's Table is a long bar-like counter with stools, but instead of a bartender and a wall of liquor bottles on the other side, is the restaurant's open kitchen and talented chefs. We sat two feet away from them, and watched a team of talented pros crank out these gorgeous looking plates of food all night long. They grilled, they heated pots and pans of sauces and vegetables and sides on the kitchen's ten burner stove. They grated and micro-planed and sprinkled stuff around like fairy dust. They worked as a team all night long and found time to chat with each other, confirm what orders were new and what was ready, shoot the breeze with us and check on how we liked our meal. And man oh man, did we like our meal! It started off with two complimentary dishes - small toasts with pistachio butter and an asparagus vichyssoise with a dollop of crème fraiche. We ordered a Kim Crawford Rosé from New Zealand ($10) and a Trappist Ale ($7). The first real decision we had to make was how were we going to order, because you can go in a few different directions here. They have a five-course tasting menu with or without wine pairings ($75/$100), or you can order a la carte, or if you visit on Tuesday or Wednesday they offer a $40 prix fixe special. We went the a la carte route and selected two appetizers, two entrees, and two desserts. The appetizers were "hand cut buckwheat pasta with spring onion, gruyere fondue, and pickled ramps for $12, and grilled octopus with lobster and carrot minestra, israeli cous cous, and sherry caramel for $17. They were both incredible combinations of sights and tastes. They were both presented beautifully! The pasta sat on a green sauce base with all sorts of things sprinkled on top. It tasted so light and delicate! The octopus was amazing- imagine a soup bowl full of lobster chunks, carrots, and cous-cous swimming in a dark gold minestrone like sauce with four hunks of the very best octopus I've ever had sitting above it all, like kings on a throne. I order octopus whenever I see it on a menu, and this was clearly the very best version I ever had- tender as could be and totally delicious. Our entrees were grilled swordfish with crispy potato, english peas, and salted peanuts in a coconut red-curry sauce ($32) and a pesto wrapped lamb loin with chickpea and ricotta dumplings, and golden beets in a rosemary red wine jus ($35). I had the most amazing appetizer as part of the prix fix menu. The beets and goat cheese salad was the best I've ever had. Then came the rest of the food I tasted was just confusing. It had no dominant flavor and it seemed like the food as a hodge podge of ingredients. I ate the stuffed fluke and the it tasted like nothing. Truly nothing! I then got the panna cotta and it tasted bad. The tart sorbet fought with the underwhelming flavor of the basil panna cotta. So I have not eaten in the restaurant during covid, it was the last place we ate out at in March of 2020 though and we have tried their take away a few times. All in all, I am not impressed. The food is ok. The dine in "build a meal" is a bit confusing and the meal descriptions sometimes are a bit too complicated. We had heard about the fried chicken take away dinner and signed up for one. (You can order a few days ahead). Not sure what happened but we did not get a gravy, the chicken thigh was rancid and we got a bunch of boneless chicken fingers. Normally, I think my kids are wrong when they say they taste something off in a meal, but the chicken coating had a strange flavor. When I spend more money than I think I should be paying, dinner needs to be perfect. Not the case here, ever. So sorry to say, I am done here. read more

Under the guise of "look you had a 3 course meal" but I didn't want 3 courses. You want to serve me 3 course because it makes your GP work. You buy in bulk cheap and you sell it all because you are forcing your customers to have multiple courses. The food was good and the presentation is great. It's gourmet cuisine , so its unique its looks great , and portions are small . The service is good. Staff is friendly . (Wait staff here had to be extremely happy as they make a small fortune in tips). The issue is minus the location and stunning decor you are simply paying for the food and its grossly overpriced. This meal was absolute perfection from greeting to last bite. The place is so cute inside and I love the open kitchen. All four of us got the tasting menu so we really sampled most of the menu. Every bite was as good as the last. Even the citrus/pink peppercorn popcorn was just so.damn.good. I didn't take one picture because I picked up every plate and admired its beauty before I dig in. I stopped by here with some coworkers for their Wednesday night prefix menu. For a set price you can order 3 items from appetizer, sea, land, or dessert part of the menu. We were seated close to the kitchen which looked like we were watching a cooking competition from food network. The food we ordered was artfully plated and unique. My favorite was the short rib. The flavor of the short rib was rich and it was spread throughout each bite of the potatoes as well. The fish was something different to try, not my favorite but still interesting. Salad was uniquely prepared and tasted great. The pre fix menu ended up being just the right amount of food with a nice selection of dinner plates. I have gone to Present Company 4 or 5 times. Every time it's so delicious. I brought my cousin when it first opened and she was a little aghast at the "fancy" aspect and prices, but after having a delightful meal, she's obsessed and happy to splurge. I've turned friends into "foodies" when they're visiting CT based on visits to PC. I love that the menu changes seasonally. We always try to catch a prix fixe evening when possible. I don't think I've ever had a dish I didn't love! We typically prefer sitting at the Chef's counter. As well as loving to eat, I also love to cook so it's cool to hear about the ingredients(when they have time to banter a little) and watch the dishes being prepared. The staff is attentive but not overbearing. A few times when the menu first changed and I was at a table vs the counter, the wait staff seemed a little stumped with questions. I like to get the opinions and recommendations from the staff so that was a little tough. But, beyond that I've never had any issues. Everything is fresh and high quality. The atmosphere is awesome. I stopped by here this past Wednesday by myself for dinner. When looking for somewhere to eat using OpenTable this happened to come up and so I made the reservations for a party of 1 and immediately headed over. Present Company has a rustic house like feel to it complete with nicely worn wooden floors and exposed brick walls on two sides and a visible wooden roof. They have sliding barn doors around a lot of the restaurant and the dining room is separated from the high top tables by a set of windows with the frames painted fire engine red. On this night there was seating in either the dining room, high tops or at the chefs bar. While I chose the dining room I probably should have chosen the chefs bar where I could have seen the kitchen work. Even so one of the workers (possibly the manager?) was super nice to me and helped me feel welcome throughout the meal. Tuesday and Wednesdays here are pre fixe menu night which I didn't know beforehand and for $40 you get an appetizer, entree and dessert. I decided to start off with the shellfish remoulade which the menu said consisted ofalaskan king crab, chilled mussels, clams and shrimp, curried mayonnaise, tomato confit, radish marmalade. It came out plated beautifully, felt fresh and was very tasty. You could easily tell the king crab, clams and shrimp apart and I loved the addition of texture and color brought in by both the radish and celery. Then for my entree I decided on the filet of beef "wellington" which the menu described as truffled mushroom duxelle, puff pastry, potato purée, classic bordelaise sauce made with beet root. Once again it was played beautifully and tasted great. The filet was cooked to a perfect medium rare as recommended by the chef and was super tender. It paired perfectly with the strong earthy flavor from the mushrooms and crispy and salt covered puff pastry. The potato purée and bordelaise sauce weren't just pretty garnishes either as the potatoes were well seasoned and the bordelaise good enough that I used a piece of bread to eat some more. Last but certainly not least was dessert and I went with the floating island. The menu describes it as soft brûléed meringue, crème anglaise, scottish shortbread and crème de cassis. It was plated a little more chaotically than the first two courses (Probably to add the cookies crunch to each bite) but still ended up being amazing. The meringue had a nice flavor and texture to it while the chilled creme anglais underneath was rich and almost tasted like melted ice cream. Meanwhile the shortbread added some nice crunch to the dish and a little bit of saltiness in a few bites which really made the dish even more enjoyable. The bottom line for me is that I would head back here again in the future. Everything here was top notch from the plating of the food to the taste of the food and even the service which helped make this the best meal I have eaten in CT this far. read more

Unfortunately, the food and wine fell far short of the mark. Pros: -Excellent, attentive waitress -Wine pairings with tasting menu are free on Thursdays -Woodsy setting by the river -Cassoulet was right on the mark Cons: -Drafty and cold on a winter's night. Several diners wore overcoats throughout the service -The wine list was weak, with haphazard offerings that would greatly benefit from a sommelier. Particularly egregious is not providing vintage years for offerings, which we find disprectful to those with any knowledge of wines -One would assume fish would be a strength for a chef with experience at Le Bernardin, but the salmon was unevenly cooked (raw in the middle) and flavorless from a lack of seasoning -There was a more than 30-minute wait between courses at one point during the service, which is inexcusable -Most of the dishes were forgettable and/or mediocre In summary, save your money and go elsewhere. read more

"Desert island" meal? Hands down Present Company is without a doubt a Top 3 contender. Straight-to-the point but sincere, simple yet tasteful; much like the food and ambiance, Jeff Lizzotte and his fine team at PCo. do a wonderful job ensuring that your dining experience is exceptional. Be it a (regular) dinner, holiday celebration, or special occasion: PCo. has been a regular go-to for me. Why? Because I know that no matter when I visit, PCo. will deliver. PCo. do their best at buying and shopping local and it shows. It's especially great seeing the menu change and grow with the seasons -- allowing you to not only sample weather-appropriate plates, but seasonally sustainable ones too. When it comes to indulging, I often gravitate to the duck or rabbit when it's available. But you can't go wrong with sharing any of the starters. In fact, I really insist you start off doing so -- as it wouldn't be fair to a complete dining experience without so! If you find yourself completely at a loss however, opt for the "Chef's tasting menu" which is a 5 course party in your mouth (minus the stress of having to figure out how to have said party) Oh! I want to give the flavor of the food 5 stars, but not the prices, amount of food, waitress, and overall experience. So here is my breakdown of each part of our dining: My husband and I went out with another couple, we all love dining out, and our friends own a restaurant. The kitchen is exposed to the dining room, where you can see the chefs working like little bees all in sync, with their white crisp chef coats. The wait staff: they don't have a uniform, you don't know who works there and who is a guest. Our waitress didn't introduce herself with a name, she just walked up and said, hi I will be taking your order today. Not over the top friendly, very court, looked like she was in a bad mood with a smirk instead of a smile. She told us we need to make a decision and all of us order from the menu, or the chefs tasting menu or not?? Whatever the NOT meant. We asked if there were any specials, she said no, because the menu is only two weeks old. She asked if we want wine or beer, which told us there is no bar. My husband is not a wine drinker, so I suggest you bring your own nip. Orders: A nice touch on the house was a feta cheese and fig parfait with toasted almonds. Delicious! My husband was the only one who ordered a starter Shellfish "Remoulade" $14 it was delicious, as I took a taste. Than we all ordered the main course. I had the Hen au Vin, while the flavor was amazing, and I love mushroom, but at $31, I only had 6 bites of chicken, seriously! Large plate with not much food on it, not enough to feed me. My husband ordered Grilled Swordfish also delicious but he paced him self eating slowly, as he only had about 6 bites of the fish at $33. My girlfriend ordered the Chou Farci $29 and was disappointed, she ate it unsatisfied with her choice. Her hubby had Steak Hambourgeoise and again great flavors just not enough food at $35. Also, once our main course arrived, the table was too small to hold the plates and our water and wine glasses. Dessert: We ordered all four on the menu, and shared. In my opinion they were all good. My espresso was terrible, no mocha. It tasted weak, and cold. After we were done: I was trying to get a picture of the four of us, and my wave of hand was dismissed by 4 staff members running around as if they had 1,000 guest to feed. SO, with a $308 bill we looked at each other, laughed and said I'm hungry! We went to our friends house in Simsbury for drinks and ordered a pizza. Yes we did! The menu also offers a broad selection of artisanal chef prepared meals with a true focus on flavor (both complimentary and contrasting) and visual excitement. All four people in our party selected the Prix Fix option that allowed for 3 dishes from the complete menu and all four of us where extremely satisfied with the quality of the dishes, the presentation and the portion size. We sampled many unparalleled dishes, which is the true benefit of a Prix Fix option. I would highly recommend the Salad Maison, Berkshire Pork Paté, Maine Lobster and Peekytoe Crab Mitonnée, Hudson Valley Foie Gras and Braised Fig Ravioli, Confit of Lamb Shoulder Navarin, Hen au Vin (see photos) and really anything on the menu, which changes often. Our server was very attentive, knowledgeable and answered questions quickly and confidently when asked. The atmosphere is rustic with a touch of shabby chic and has limited tables, so reservations are strongly encouraged. Due to the smaller restaurant size it can get quite loud but it is a fun energetic atmosphere. The alcoholic selection is limited to beer and wine with wine being the star, making up the majority of the offerings. If you are looking for a spectacular restaurant, away from it all with a fun energetic vibe..then this should be your next stop. read more

Had a superb "special night" dinner here. The ambiance was lovely, with a clean cozy vibe. Amanda our server was excellent and the food was fabulous. We had the rainbow cauliflower topped with a 3 minute egg as a shared app(very rich good to share ) which was heaven. I had the Witch flounder and lobster /avocado salad which was also out of this world . The lamb loin and sausage was also a hit at our table. Present Company just nails it on every front - service, quality, presentation, taste, creativity, ambiance, and the list goes on. I finally visited last week just shy of their first anniversary (happy birthday PC!) and have been kicking myself for taking so long to stop in. A friend and I visited on a whim after spending the afternoon at a nearby winery. If the starters are any indication, I'll be returning ASAP for the chef's tasting menu (and I don't mean ASAP like another year from now). Everything was unbelievable, starting with the bread and herbed compound butter and clam custard amuse bouche. We kicked things off with a delightfully elevated version of chicken and dumplings with chicken confit and rich foie gras agnolotti, and followed with some really bright, vibrant flavors in the rare yellowfin tuna with cucumber/seaweed salad and ginger-coriander vinaigrette. We also lovedddd the fluke crudo with corn fritter and squid ink. Seriously, what sorcery is this? How are these recipes dreamed up? Hats off to you, Chef Jeff. As if those three starters (seriously, these are just the starters) weren't magnificent enough, we finished off with a spectacular peach melba sorbet dessert that tasted like summer.
