This place was a random stop which we were pleasantly surprised..didn't look like much from the street but the food here was so good. It feels like your in a Cheers episode, it's a local hangout spot. The bartender has been there for the past 22 years, very nice guy. Press Box was recommended to me on my first trip to Galveston, earlier this year. The review was pretty much 'great bar, primarily locals, and isn't full of douchey tourists'. Totally felt welcomed from the moment I walked in (though I was a tourist, too). The bartender, Joey, is awesome and knows EVERYBODY in town. Met several of the locals and was entertained by stories of Galveston, past and present. Stopped by a couple more times that week and had the same experience, so it wasn't a one-off. Made sure to make it my first stop after arriving in town last night. Same experience again...fantastic and friendly locals. Food is actually pretty good! I've been coming here awhile and it's a great place. Drinks are good and the food is some of the best you'll find and is reasonably priced. The BLT is great. Prime rib is excellent too, but this visit I opted for the 10 oz ribeye with sautéed mushrooms. It was perfectly cooked and seasoned. Delicious! The cooks always do a great job. Did I mention the tots (tater tots)? They are so good too! If you can come for the lunch special on Friday, you should. Every Friday they have fried shrimp and it is some of the best I've ever had (and I've eaten a lot of fried shrimp)! It's a locals place, but whoever comes in will feel totally welcome. Food was meh, the service was meh, it was not really a restaurant, it was more of a bar for older locals. We were looking for a place to get hot wings and we found them here, however, the wings were as tough as the tanned skin of the elderly locals that made up the clientele. Wasn't really excited to try this place but my girlfriends and I really wanted something to eat and drink and this was the only place open when we pulled into Galveston so we ordered Long Island iced teas didn't catch the waitress name but she was a older white lady skinny and short with short red hair. She then take our food order cuts me off before I was done! It wasn't even busy when we got there. While writing another review, my mouth started to water... but only because I was envisioning a meal from this place and not from the place I was reviewing. That meal, my friends, would be none other than the Patty Melt the Press Box offers. If you are a patty melt lover, like myself, you will absolutely throw yourself head over heels into this delightful sandwich. The patty melt is on marble rye and features deliciously sliced (not diced) onions, your huge patty, cheese, and even the candy of meats- bacon. I normally enjoy it with a side of tots and life is wonderful, even if your team is losing. Now that I've gotten that out of the way, let me elaborate. We came here to watch a series of sporting events while in town for my boyfriend's birthday. We wanted a place less touristy and this place popped up instantly. Even though this place is less touristy, you may be embraced by the locals and become a local if even for a moment. We went twice in the last trip down to Galveston and saw many of the same people, who tipped their hats to us and shouted along with us when our team would do something questionable on the TV screen. This place has the best bar food selection and quality of food that I've come across in any bar I've been to. One night my boyfriend had a half order of a coney dog, which was plenty to fill him up. Another night I had a mushroom burger, which was fabulous (but I still should have re-ordered that ever holy patty melt). The staff is friendly and attentive. We found that sitting at the bar was a better experience, especially if you're looking to be social or talk sports with folks. Will we be back? Is that even a question? Yes- this will be one of our go-to spots on the Island, especially if we find ourselves needing a great place for watching a sporting event. read more

For some reason, this is my favorite bar in Galeston. I have no idea why. It's decent and all, but I can't pinpoint anything special. I guess it's a whole-is-greater-than-the-sum-of-its-parts type thing for me. When we lived in Galveston (moved away in summer 2009), we had plans to try all of the little neighborhood bars one sees on every corner, but that didn't really happen. We did find this place while wandering around the Strand area, though. I was suprised that it was listed here as a restaurant. They do have a small bar-food menu, but I've never ordered food there or seen anyone eating there. It's not that big, and the last time I went it was a bit smoky. Well, we did go with friends that smoke, so that probably doesn't help the matter. Decent classic rock plays on the radio, fine with me. Not so loud that you can't talk to the people that you are sitting with. They don't have microbrews or challenging hoppy ales like I usually like to drink, but for some reason here I'm happy with a Shiner or a simple mixed drink (last time my husband and I went we asked for "two gin and tonics" and the waitress misheard it as "two jack and diets," bleh ... if I'm gonna order whiskey and coke it ain't gonna be no diet coke). The last time we visited (Thanksgiving weekend), some other patrons struck up a conversation with us. This might normally have bothered me but it seemed genuinely friendly rather than creepy or intrusive. That type of thing doesn't usually happen in cooler-than-thou Austin. Was in the area Memorial Day weekend and decided this could be a good spot to watch the Spurs play the Thunder in the Western Conference Finals. Walked in to this very unassuming building and instantly got the feeling that this was a nice neighborhood pub. Sat down and ordered a full order of nachos and boy golly they were awesome! I liked the strips of, what seemed to be, romaine lettuce on the nachos it gave it a more appetizing appearance and added to the flavor immensely. My girlfriend ordered a single Coney with fries and she loved it, got her full with just one dog. I ordered the hot Italian sandwich which was ham, salami, pepperoni and mozzarella cheese on a warm bun with a side of fries and enjoyed it. It was like a pizza sandwich actually haha. The menu has a bunch of items on it so I'm not sure where the complaints come from on that front but I felt like I had a choice on food and that is surprising at most pubs. In the end I was most amazed by the final bill, after two entrees, a big appetizer, six mixed drinks and a tea the bill came out to only $30! How?! I gladly handed the bartender two twenty dollar bills and was glad to tell him, "Keep the change." He put up with us for the entire game and an hour before so he deserved it. Check this place out for a low key spot to hang out and have a bite to eat. Considering all the traffic and crowd on the island for Memorial Day weekend this place never got packed, just enough people to make it enjoyable. read more

It was a slow day, and a friend and I wanted to try something new. I've been on a sandwich/burger kick lately. So we went to the press box! The service is very hospitable , but the food was just not right. We had the egg rolls to start, they were weird tasting -- the industry in us we asked if they were from Sysco ... What do ya know, it was . Even the spicy ranch couldn't save it. So we move on to our entrees-- le burger. I wanted the chili cheese burger with extra chili for my fries. The burger was not good at all. The chili on the burger was similar to a sloppy joe and there was hardly any cheese. I hate sloppy joes-- I did not finish that burger. The chili on the side was quite good... Nothing like what was on the burger (why, I have no idea) -- but I didn't eat much of my fries-- even with the chili on the side I lost my appetite. My friend and I felt like we wasted our 20$ bill. Rightfully so. They may have other good recipes, but that's not what I like. I like chili and I like burgers. Great blooming onion, awesome service, and what looks to be a very spacious patio. We couldn't take advantage of the patio due to weather but we will be back. We were here for football and decided on a pitcher to share. There aren't as many tvs as I thought there would be. It's also kind of fancy for any sports bar I have been to. Our first night in town I was tasked with finding a place to watch the saints game, with good food. This place came up. I told my husband.. they say its like Cheers? The reviews were totally right. Inside groups of regulars helped out the suddenly swamped bartender, by bussing tables and handling out silverware. I played waitress and took our tables orders. Went on a Tuesday night and it was pretty dead. Not unusual for a place in Galveston, especially on a Tuesday after New Year's. There were a few locals at the bar. The place is small but has a great pub feel to it. Wood trim and high drooled tables. We had nachos for an appetizer. They were just meh. There was too much greenery and too many onions but they were still OK. We all had burgers. I had the Texas Rangers burger. It was a very large burger. And (despite what another reviewer Mary P says) it was less than $10.00. Matter of fact the only things on the menu that are more than $10 are the steaks and chips. The flavor of the burger was good but the burger was overcooked and the bacon was too. On a positive note, the BBQ sauce they used was really good and the buns were super fresh. The tater tots were also really good. They kind of looked like OreIda tots and probably come frozen in a big bag from Sysco, but that is what most places do and like I said they were really good. Bottom line, it is a decent spot with decent food and friendly staff. I would suggest you try it for yourself. One visit doesn't make for a really good assessment so we will be back and will adjust the review as needed. read more

Our waitress Danielle was super attentive and a great waitress. We were there during afternoon hours on a Saturday and it was quiet chill with only a few other tables occupied. My wife and I are "locals" and read that this is a place for locals. I think our island visitors would really enjoy Press Box too. This isn't your typical bar food! I had a great ribeye, cooked exactly as I asked, and the flavor was excellent. It came with a nice sized salad and a baked potato (loaded with freshly chopped green onion, sour cream, cheese, and real bacon). My wife chose the patty melt and opted for the tater tots. These tots are unique... breaded tater tots! Definitely worth a try. Even if you are not a tot lover, these just might change your mind. The atmosphere is comfortable, with lots of old brick walls, plenty of TV screens with sports, even a sports ticker scrolling with the latest sports news. The service was good and the staff friendly. The one drawback is their limited selection of draft beer, but don't let that stop you from giving Press Box a try! read more

Packed with locals, this place is a little off the beaten path and isn't tourist focused like the other annoying overpriced places on the island. I've first visited this neighborhood bar with a couple of local friends. Everyone made me feel right at home. I kept expecting "Norm" to walk in any minute. Very nice folks work there, and very nice folks frequent it. The Italian Sub and Tater Tots were to awesome. But the best part was a few weeks ago I went to Galveston on my Birthday. My friends were out of town, so I decided to stop at the Pressbox for a nightcap with wife (her first visit). This is a small and charming place away from the bustle of the beachfront. It's not very crowded, and the few patrons who visit all seem to know each other. They don't allow smoking indoors, so that's a plus for non-smokers who can sometimes feel nauseated in a smoke filled room. You can always step outside into their patio to smoke. I had one big gripe though - the bartender was, to put it mildly, less than generous with portions of liquor when mixing drinks. I had three double Jack 'n Cokes, and each time I estimate he poured in close to 30 ml of JD instead of 60. Also, you should note that this place doesn't have dedicated parking, so you'll have to park along the street. EDIT: I've been there again since, and this time the bartender was generous with the drinks. read more

Best on the whole island, great food, top notch service, good adult beverages, family friendly, sports screens in every corner. It's a laid back atmosphere, not a dress fancy type place. It is the sports bar that anyone can call home and everyone should. The menu includes many sports bar faves, and the wings are a great start. The Reuben sandwich was a pleasant surprise to see in the menu, and was not a disappointing meal by any means. The tater tots are crispy on the outside and somewhat soft on the inside, just like I love them. The staff is super attentive and not pushy, almost ninja like for drink refills. A great time was had by all, my whole family enjoyed this place, ages 10 to ......well we will say over fifty, so I don't get into trouble for age telling.. read more

A place for the locals...at times in the evening you might think you walked into an episode of Cheers. The food is simple, but usually very fresh and tasty. There are daily lunch and dinner specials. One of my favorite special is the pork chop. It is one giant chop that you can get them to blacken if you want. Chops are on Wednesday. They also serve tator tots which is always a treat!! It is a sports bar so if there is a sporting event it will be on tv and sometimes can get a little crowded in the evening. read more

Memorial Monday 2011 While we came at a weird hour for a bar (1p) it was Memorial Day so that justifies us being at a bar that early in the day. We intended to drink but ended up not. The outside is a little sketchy for a first-timer, but the inside is friendly and cozy. Multiple large flat screen televisions, and would be perfect for a 6-8 person groups to watch your favorite team play! Their food is delicious. This was our third trip to the Press Box in the last 2 months - two out of the three times they have been out of the daily special. My husband ordered "The Rocket" sandwich - was very dry, I had a grilled cheese - was OK. My husband does like their tater tots. In the past the best item I've had was the chicken fried chicken (which I do highly recommend), the grilled chicken tends to be dry. What drove me to write a review today (December 2020 - midst of the height of the pandemic) was the complete disregard of the mask mandate - I never saw the bartender with his on, our waitress wore hers the first time to the table - then never again after that. Won't consider going back again until after the pandemic (and will call first to make sure they have their special). read more

I went to the press box today. The food looked amazing. I am Currently undergoing chemotherapy and today was one of the first days i felt good enough to walk around, when you feel good you have to take those days in grattitude and make the best of it all . The watress who served me was very nice I even gave her a good tip, but the lady behind the bar was very rude. She was making comments about my wig, I guess because it had red highlights. She said things like "You See things like that in Walmart not the Press box" at the top of her lungs. And she was saying im going to take pictures of her and post them on the internet. Regrettably I lost my appitite. I understand its human nature to talk about other pepole and i now regret putting myself in that situation.
