If you're looking for a new comfort bar in the Galveston area, look no further than Tsunami Tequila Emporium. This place just feels like home. And it's mostly due to the staff. My bartender/server, Cambrye, is the pride of Tsunami. Not only is she one of the most skilled and knowledge bartenders in Galveston, her poster is also plastered all over the walls to promote some of the holiday deals here. It's like I was eating with a celebrity. She brought my food and drinks immediately and we had the best conversation about places to check out in Galveston. I ordered the seafood flautas with the sauce on the side (as suggested by Cambrye) and it was to die for. It was presented with 2 sauces, one sweet and one spicy. Alternating between the 2 gave you a back and forth punch that set my taste buds on fire. And the local Galveston Island Tiki Wheat draft beer I had was poured to perfection and crispy as a potato chip. Overall, great food! The environment is somewhat of a surfer vibe mixed with an old school bar vibe. Very unique and really gives you that island feel. The only thing that needs improvement are the pool tables. They probably need to replace the fabric on it. It would also be nice if it didn't cost a new quarters. Overall, amazing experience! I give this place 15/16 Freys. We came in as a party of four at 8:30 PM on a Thursday evening. They have a bunch of Galveston Marti Gras posters all over their walls-it was one of the first things we noticed coming in. We are not from Galveston ourselves, but we enjoyed looking at it while we were here. I ordered a Don Quixote Ranch water with half Sotol, half ghost tequila-this came with a nice kick but wasn't too spicy. They have hidden treasures behind their bar-I saw a stuffed cheetah and a rubber marti gras duck while examining their tequilas! We decided to do a pour of Don Julio Primavera as well. While it was pricey, it was worth the cost! We appreciated that they provided a lot of different types of tequila with a wide range of flavors. This is a very cool spot. read more

Galveston is a ghost town on Sunday nights, but the boys at Tsunami were a fun group.

I went to this bar tonight and had a really uncomfortable experience at the door. When I first walked up, I asked a guy standing outside if dogs were allowed, and he told me yes. Then another guy, who was standing directly in front of the entrance and claiming to be the manager, told me I could only come in if I introduced myself to his friend. It was pretty clear he wasn't really the manager, but he and three other guys blocked the door and wouldn't let me pass. I ended up stuck there talking to them for about 20 minutes before they finally moved and said I could come inside. By that point, I didn't even feel comfortable anymore. What made it worse was that when a big group of people this guy knew walked up, he let them through right away and then started to heckle me from there. The whole thing felt unprofessional and disrespectful, and honestly, it seemed like they were only doing this because I was a single woman. It left a really bad impression, and I wouldn't want anyone else to go through the same situation. I would recommend an actual door guy, or maybe reviewing the cameras and not allowing this young man in again. read more

Searching for a parking space on the Strand and as fate would have it one opened up right in front of this joint. A laid way back tequila bar with fabulous margaritas & great appetizers. Had all my favorite tequilas that cut right to the point. And the service was spot on. Johnny was our bartender and besides making one hell of a margarita, he was a fountain of info about Galveston, the Strand and Mardi Gras. My attached photos show some of the Mardi Gras posters that line the walls and they are something to behold. Absolute works of art. Could not have asked for a better afternoon of day drinking and would highly recommend this bar. Beautiful building outside but really strange setup inside. There's a large open space when you first walk in with two bulky booths exactly where the sunlight shines through. Some wrought iron tables and plants could really make that spot. The rest of the bar is pushed back, out of the sun's reach. Then there's a back room that's a foot or so below the rest of the bar with one pool table if you get tired of looking at all the old Mardi Gras posters from years past. We didn't, they were stunning. My biggest qualm with this bar is they call themselves an "exotic tequila emporium" yet the only true part of that is tequila. They serve all your basic and very cheap tequilas that you can get anywhere. Nothing exotic. Three bottles of the same brand Mezcal which the bartender was absolutely clueless about. She didn't know what it was or that it was even available until I pointed it out. Literally nothing that you couldn't find in the most basic liquor store. There is a list of margaritas above the bar. In traditional fashion they are named and followed by a list of the ingredients. No measurements. The very last one is called the bandera. The flag, as in the Mexican flag. It is listed as one shot of fresh lime juice followed by a shot of tequila followed by a shot of Bloody Mary mix. What does that sound like to you? It sounds like back to back shots to me orrrrr a bloody Maria. I ask the bartender about this and first she says she doesn't know then she says Oh! It's a margarita! We ask her to just give it to us in shots as we had taken a very similar shot (substitute oj for lime juice) before and loved it. This one was no different. Finally we pay and ask the bartender if she knows any good dive bars or must visit spots and she replies, "Well I'm not from here so I don't know anything." Even if you just moved here, you obviously live here. You work here...you knew everyone else in the bar so you've been here a little while yet have not one suggestion? Later I found out the restaurant next door actually owns this bar and she didn't even suggest that place. I did replace her face with a picture of my cat because she was friendly but not very helpful throughout the entire visit. read more

Stopped in to get out of the heat from the Shrimp Festival and was pleasantly surprised. We always love the bars set in the old historical buildings. The selections of tequilas were outstanding and the prices were reasonable. I always like to try something that I've never had so chose the Team Chili Con Carne margarita. It's a super refreshing concoction of cucumber and serrano pepper that you would not believe could come together in a margarita! We came down to the Strand after we successfully missed Hurricane Laura. We saw this place offered a great selection of tequila. Upon walking in, our group of 7 was quickly judged and we were asked to sit in the booths in the front. The bartender was a younger gentleman and he was rude (nicely put). He proceeded to walk over to other tables and get their orders BUT apparently our table was too far. He yelled across the bar "what do you want to drink?" 2 people ordered a beer and the rest just walked out. It was very noticeable we were NOT welcome. We will not be back. read more

Pathetic and a Rip Off!! I was walking around The Strand on Sunday and decided to pop in for a cocktail and catch some of the Texans game. I sat at the bar and the female bartender takes my order, I say Vodka and Sprite... She doesn't ask what vodka I want and then proceeds to take out a "tall" glass (its actually a 16oz beer glass). She fills it with ice then begins filling it with a clear liquid all the way till 1/2 inch from the top. I think to myself...no way thats mine, she didnt ask what brand vodka nor did I ask for a tall...so that must be a full beer mug of Sprite for someone. At that point she grabs so no name brand vodka and as fast as u can flip the bottle (with the small spout) she slips it back down...maybe...MAYBE getting 1/4 oz of vodka in the full glass. Then she slides it over to me!!! I was in shock...then began to laugh in her face almost uncontrollably!! THIS was my cocktail! Bahahahahaha This pathetic excuse of a bartender was just scamming be...actually thats theft! A "tall" cocktail which I didnt even want should have a minimum 1.5 oz of liquor in it. I walked out the door still laughing! Ill never go back and I suggest you dont either...well unless you want to be SCAMMED!! read more

Visited this cute, laid back, little bar on Saturday, January 19th, during the chili cook off. It was so comfortable and welcoming. Even with all the foot traffic, it was clean, not only in the bar but the bathrooms. We will certainly visit again. read more

Maybe it's just me, but I am a pretty relaxed drinker. I usually like my shots mixed with something else, so this could be why this wasn't really my cup of tea. First of all, this place was super crowded. There were people packed into all corners. I think there must have been four bachelorette parties in there. It was also super bright. When I go to drink, I don't need to see all the glazed eyes and the trainwrecks that are about to clearly occur. I would rather have the shadow of the drink and the dim light to shade my eyes. Also, the music was totally bizarre. It ranged from weird 80's pop to sad country songs. Who wants to listen to sad songs as they are shooting tequila? Downer. The service was also super slow. I went with three friends to the bar, and instead of asking what we all wanted (we were clearly together) she got our drinks, one by one by one. Some of us placed multiple orders, but she would only listen to one at a time. The people were obnoxious, the bathroom was gross and the floor sticky. I could go on and on. I give them two stars for their decent drink selection, though, and the fact that the bar back brought us extra stools without us asking. That was nice. Quaint little bar. Great atmosphere and very friendly regulars. The bartender Jackson is very attentive and knowledgeable. Very clean place. Clean restrooms and a jukebox full of great music. The happy hour they have is awesome. $1.00 select draft, $2.00 well drinks and they are able to get food from a nearby restaurant. I would recommend this spot to anyone that is in town. read more

Avoid this place at all cost!!! Got carded at the door but still had to be wear wristbands even though we were 21+. We sat at the booth along the wall, they gladly took our money when we ordered drinks, but then the door guy and bartenders wanted to kick us out after 5 minutes citing they were closing the bar early before 2am. They did not want to allow us time to finish the drinks we just paid for, but then we noticed that the only ones getting kicked out were those wearing wristbands (even though there was a customer without a wristband who began screaming and smashed a glass on the bar, shattering glass everywhere). No one would tell us why about 10 other people were getting to stay while we were being forced to leave. Basically if you're not a drug addict or alcoholic regular, you're not welcome here. The owner either has no idea their employees are treating customers with such disgust or they simply have no regard for their customers. read more

Tsunami Tequila Bar. Nothing says fun in Gtown like a night of Yaga-nami's....where you go back and forth between Yaga's and Tsunami's and take drink after drink with your friends. Unlike the bars in big cities, a round of 4 drinks (mixed drinks or beer) will cost you around 16-20 bucks making your night out pretty cheap for maximum benefit. The jukebox at Tsunami's is great and Yaga's always has bands on fri or sat nights, and sometimes a DJ to dance the night away. read more

Did not have mint for one of their specialty drinks....not a big deal so, ordered their award winning 2015 margarita. This place is right on the strand and offers a quieter place to sit down and escape all of the tourists for 15 minutes to have a drink. The tequila selection was pretty good, and the bartender had good recommendations. They also have an Abita beer on tap. This excites me In Texas. So excited. This place is pretty cool and made me a little nostalgic for the west coast. Went in on a saturday afternoon and the place was pretty empty but that didn't speak for the quality of the drinks or the general atmosphere. The bartender was very attentive and recommended the Tsunami Rita made with 1800 Tequila and pomegranate. It was a great recommendation and absolutely delicious with a hefty portion of tequila (I didn't feel cheated on the price I paid). Looking around at the selection behind the bar, they definitely have a wide range of different tequilas. I only wish that the place had an outside patio to enjoy the drinks in the nice weather. Not sure how this place fares at night time but I'm sure it does pretty well being located on the strand.
