Thanks to an acquaintance who told me about Caravaggio Gelato, we checked it out when a family member was visiting from out of town. It was a treat to be served directly by the gelatiere artigiano who crafts the recipes. Among us three, we tried 4 flavors. We spotted the Gianduja (Hazelnut & Chocolate) later, and it will be on the list for the next visit. * Piedmont Hazelnut (Nocciola del Piemonte): The overall favorite--rich, creamy, and nutty. * Orange Blossom Honey: Our guest's top pick from the regular menu. He exclaimed, beaming, at least three times how good that flavor was! * King Pluot: One of the special flavors of the day, the gelato captured the taste of summer - bright, sweet, and refreshing. * Black Sesame: I was curious how black sesame would taste in gelato, and I was not disappointed - the flavor was deep and earthy, made with Japanese sesame seeds. There may be a dozen gelato and ice cream shops in Berkeley, but Caravaggio is where you'll relish the science and art of gelato making.

I got the hazelnut-chocolate and zuppa inglese (English trifle) flavors. Overall I felt like the flavors were very muted and watered down. The zuppa inglese was icy and not creamy at all. Unfortunately this spot really missed the mark for me. Would give 2 stars but bumping up to 3 stars for the very friendly service.

The moment you walk into the shop, you'll notice the current flavor offerings displayed on colorful ice cream-shaped signs across the wall to the right. I could spend an eternity studying each flavor, but there's limited space to queue indoors so really gotta decide on a flavor and serving style fast in order to keep the line moving. Among the flavors were some classics, fruity/floral mixes, and dessert-inspired ones too, a whole range so there's something for everyone. I got the Breakfast Brownie and it was unforgettable! It tasted creamy and delightful without being overwhelming, while the cornflakes mixed inside added a satisfying crunch to each bite. I came back a second time before a show at Crybaby, a smaller venue across the street. Grabbing a scoop here to-go has naturally become part of my pre-concert routine at this point and I plan to come back again next time to explore more flavors. If you're ever heading to a show nearby, I'd definitely recommend stopping by beforehand for a lil energy boost and treat.

Also, whoever they have making their flavors is super creative! They list out all the flavors on the wall on super cute little ice cream scoop cut outs for you to browse while you wait in line. It is definitely more of a takeout ice cream spot with not a ton of seating so you either gotta get lucky with seating, wait for a spot, or take it to go. We got the pandan strawberry and the milk & cookies + cream. Next time I stop by I really want to try out their sundae!

They own an apartment in Paris and I didn't want to offend them with my usual guerrilla tactics. I'm known to fight dirty and conspire with others during this game and everybody hates me because of it, and I didn't want to be banned from their apartment, as Paris in the fall is lovely. Thus my journey with Walter began. One thing about me, is I respect a place that knows flavors. I don't want basic vanilla, give me some weird and strange and flavorful that will tantalize my palette and ignite my senses. Give me salty and sweet. Give me TANG. Give me these things and DONT give me gas. Bad Walters cracked the code. All flavor, real dairy, no lactose, no gas. Each week they have a different batch of flavors, so there's always something new to explore. There's like 6 flavors to choose from at once and they let me try them all before I selected my choice hehe. I tried to sample 6 flavors at Cold Stone and they took me out back and shot me, but here, nobody was mean to me. Mr. Potatohead is the flavor I landed on--brown sugar custard with peanut butter swirl and chocolate covered potato chips. The chunks of chocolate covered potato chips were lodged in the ice cream and I felt like an archaeologist excavating ancient rocks as my spoon lifted the potato chocolate chunks out of the creamy custard into my mouth. I bought a pint. The Mick Jagger was another joy, with its salty caramel and Oreo chunks. They're lucky Peaches Christ was sold out because I might've lost my mind for a peach cobbler ice cream! They wouldve had to drag me out by the back of my neck like a rabid dog! Maybe next time. All in all, tasty ice cream. Would recommend.

We have been extremely loyal customers ever since. They rotate flavors, but through many months and many visits I don't think I've ever tried a bad one. The flavors are also very fun, not your typical cookies and cream, cookie dough, etc. Although they do have a plain version sometimes. The employees are very helpful and kind letting you sample the flavors. Our absolute favorite is tinky winky- ube flavored ice cream with honey comb pieces. They also sell points to the side- take advantage. You'll want more when you're done! The ambiance and vibe of bad Walter's is perfect. Bright colors, disco ball dripping, fun sayings on the cups, the whole 9 yards. The take home pint we got has Reddit "hate" comments and their responses, it's hilarious. This ice cream store is way more of a vibe than any marketing agent could dream of. Who would've thought I wish I could be a rep for an ice cream company? Oh and they also do a stamp card when you buy pints to get a free scoop. You bring in the containers so they can recycle them. It's a win win for both sides, loves it. Best ice cream ever!!!

Unfortunately, I've tried ordering the Sachertorte twice now; the first time they called back 15 mins to let me know that the choice was out, and if an alternative choice was okay--- and that was absolutely fine as we got the vegan raspberry gelato. The vegan raspberry gelato was incredibly delicious. A deep red/purple color, it has raspberry seeds and is not overly sugary, and holds a sweet tartness. As there is no dairy used, the texture is as expected; not creamy, but similar to sorbet. 10/10. However, the second time I tried ordering Sachertorte, they sent me Cremino al Caffe instead of Sachertorte. A little sad because I'm not a fan of coffee and that I've been looking forward to trying Sachertorte for a while now. I might just need to go to the Oakland Food hall and wait in line to attempt one last time! Friends enjoyed the Cremino al Caffe. As I used Grubhub to order, and the gelato themselves were wonderful, I'll be giving them 4/5 for the unfortunate mishaps. Would try again.

And, you can't tell me it's not because honestly, I can taste it. I kind of felt my face go numb after I had my first sample. Gelato just can't be this good... it just can't! The last time that I had a foodgasm from gelato was a couple years back when I had it in St. Augustine. Now that there's one so close to home, I feel like I might start having seizures from eating it. Have I ever had gelato this creamy? I honestly can't even think right now. My brain is too busy replaying the love affair that I had with their banana coconut and Trepalle di panna earlier today. The flavors, oh the flavors! So many good ones and such a nice variety on deck. They usually have about 10 different flavors available and they rotate a few of them out about once to twice per week. The texture is unbelievable. It's like someone has been churning this creaminess all day and night long. That might be quite possible given the fact that this gelato is produced by a father and son team and made from scratch. Yep, it takes two to create this delicious phenomenon and only one Shayla to eat and enjoy the hell out of it. $4 will get you a hefty scoop of some of the most delicious gelato that you may very well have ever had in your life. I wish I could suggest a few delicious flavors to try, but practically every flavor here is amazing. Plus, they rotate them quite often, so there are always new flavors to try. It's like Christmas but these gifts of flavors are here all year around! Trepalle, I'm looking forward to your permanent stay!

My personal favorite is the Kyoto Matcha - the matcha is high-quality, with a vivid green color and rich flavor that balances beautifully with the creamy cheesecake base. The Original is a classic for a reason with deeply caramelized top and creamy interior. I also tried the Iribancha, a roasted green tea flavor. It's intense, smoky, and unique..maybe not one I could finish in one sitting, but definitely memorable and recommend for those who want that earthy/smoky taste.
