I came to Prestige barbershop yesterday and got my haircut by Marcus. Not only did he give me exactly what I wanted. Marcus is a very creative and intelligent Barber. He could see where I had waves and where with his scissoring technique he was able to blend my hair to thier optimal style. That's the mark of a good barber. I got a perfect fade from Ariana today! I brought in a picture for a reference to just give her an idea of what I wanted, but was pleasantly surprised to see that it was almost an exact match. Still traumatized 24 hours later. I asked for a specific cut with pictures and drawings (but mainly the picture I show, below) and Marcus came up with something totally different. If he didn't understand what I meant I wish he had asked me. I kept saying along the way that it didn't look like he was doing what I said but he apparently had a plan and was sticking to it. He said he was going for like a mullet wolf cut, both of which I hate, and I told him I didn't like mullets and showed him a picture of a mullet, and he said, "no, not like that," but he did a "faux mullet" anyway. I asked for a razored bangs, and showed him a picture and he gave me mushroom top bangs. I liked the front but he took my bangs too far to the sides. I tried to stop him and he said, "actually, your bangs don't stop until over here." Says who?!? I wanted to grow the sides out. The customer could request a tiny triangle of bangs. That would have been legitimate, but he had his own idea and by that time it was too late. I was just trusting him. He showed me a picture of what he was aiming for (which he didn't totally succeed at, either) and the picture showed little resemblance to what I'd asked for. Maybe he misunderstood what I meant by "tendrils," when he gave me a wolf cut with fringy thing. At first I liked what he was doing and said, "it is not what I asked for, but I like it," because he hadn't gotten to the bottom yet, where mullet happened. I was so disappointed because I had studied exactly what I'd wanted and drew up images to explain it. It was a hard to explain cut that I was asking for, so I am probably at fault for not making sure we were on the same page, and for being too nice when he said mullet. I felt like I had to take care of his ego, so my bad. I will never again be polite to a hairdresser if they are not doing what I asked for. The guy that went before me didn't look that happy with his cut, but the guy who went before him looked like he wanted to cry. His cut was not bad. I liked it, but apparently it was not what he wanted. He ran outside without saying anything and his dad paid. Marcus said, "he's done," not, "he is unhappy with his cut. Maybe I will pay closer attention to what my customers want, because that was a good cut and he looks mortified anyway!" No, he didn't seem to mind at all that his customer was upset. If he did mind, it didn't change his approach to listening to my instructions. I am certain the style I requested was hard to understand, so I give him the benefit of the doubt that it was my fault, but I did tell him I didn't like mullets and he kind of tried to give me one anyway. I told him I didn't want the hair pressed against my neck but like an updo with tendrils coming down. I showed him pictures. We totally did not communicate. So, maybe Marcus is a fine barber, polished, with modern, contemporary cuts, but be sure he is going to give you what you want before he starts cutting into your look. Also, the Yelp picture says $25 for a cut, and he charged me $45. Maybe that included blow-dry? I didn't ask for a blow-dry but didn't stop him. In the beginning, he sprayed my hair with water mixed with some scent like cologne, which is still lingering 24 hours later, which I didn't particularly want as a woman and I seemed to be mildly allergic to it. No biggie. Anyway, he's a nice person and I liked talking with him. I didn't want to be mean so I thanked him. But, if you have to live with his cut for as long as I will, don't be overly polite at the expense of your image. Btw, in the parking lot I was so disgusted (partly with myself for not being assertive) that I chopped off the mullet bottom with kitchen shears, leaving the long sides in front of my ears like Orthodox Jewish payos. I was quite happy with the results. I will likely be cutting my own hair from now on. Maybe I just wanted to be in control of my image. If you do, too, maybe you'll have better luck to pay the bucks and go elsewhere. read more

This is a really nice shop. I was a walk in and got a same day appointment with Gavin. Gavin did a great job on my hair and I couldn't be more pleased. There's always some anxiety when you go to a barber / stylist for the first time, but Gavin listened to me and cut my hair the way I wanted. He is also personable And a good conversationist. Thank goodness I found a hair stylist I can trust. I highly recommend you give him a shot. Really decent price as well. I am new to the area and was worried about finding a good hair stylist who would Enhanced my style, but did not change it. I look so good I stopped traffic all the way home! read more

Shave-and-a-haircut, and two beers! I had an uncle named Jim who had a barbershop in "the flats" area of the Mississippi River town where I was raised. One block south and one block west was another uncle, Lee, who also had a barbershop. And if you walked six blocks straight east, you would be catfish bait. Jim and Lee were competitive, yet they never fought because on Friday, when the snipping was done, they met for pints at the Lux Club (you had to be of Benelux origin to get in). Fast-forward to Ashland in the 21st century, where a little nip still goes a long way in creating an old-school sense of congeniality. At 42 Lithia Way, a half-block from the plaza, Prestige now offers a few local craft brews to its clientele to shorten their wait-time. Complementary no less. That has customers lining up extra-early for their appointments, I've been told, and a few of them don't even have appointments. My uncles would be right at home in this historic shop. It's authentic from the classic spiraling barber pole to the vintage leather barber chairs. Sit down, sink in, and say "ahhh." The only things missing are cigars and spittoons, and a bunch of red-cheeked Luxembourgers clattering their beer steins together and shouting "Proost!" Prestige also has another location near the university at 1688 Siskiyou, which has an ambience and style of its own. I work in a loud environment and didn't hear my alarm go off. I would've been 10 minutes late for my haircut. I understood that she would no longer have time for a cut. But instead of giving me the opportunity to apologize, pay for my missed appointment as it was my fault and possibly rebook, Sierra instantly berated me and told me I was never welcome to rebook refusing any chance to rectify the situation. I tried to explain to her that she didn't need to approach with that kind of aggression that I would've been willing to pay anyway and she hung up on me. Seems like I may have lucked out. I had my hair cut by Chloe and she was awesome. She didn't know it but I'm on the spectrum, so haircuts and physical touch are a nightmare, as is mindless chit chat. I asked for a mullet, the barber asked if I wanted a fade too, I thought he was just going to fade the side, he has probably never seen a mullet bc he took the fade into a v all the way to the back. Later, I took a shower and when it dried my hair was uneven in the back. don't go here, they will ruin your hair. read more

Having moved here over one year ago, I have been in search of a really good barber shop in Ashland. Well, today I visited Prestige and my search is over! I used their website to make an appointment, which was very easy and convenient, and I even received a complimentary reminder via text which is really nice. When I arrived for my appointment, I was greated by Kendall who was very friendly and welcoming, and she even offered me something to drink! The shop is really nicely put together and very clean. To me organization and cleanliness is a great indicator of attention to details. Kendall gave me the perfect haircut; exactly what I asked for. She took her time and ensured she got every detail right. Her scissors and clipper were nice and sharp which I can tell gave me a much better cut that the other places I've been to. Additionally, their prices are very reasonable. As soon as I got home my wife complimented me on how great my hair looked. I'm super stoked to finally find a real deal barber in Ashland. My son and I went here for a cut and were super impressed. It's the best cut either of us have had in a long time. And the barbers, Kendall and Chris, could not have been more sweet and caring. They both took their time and put a lot of attention into the cut. The pricing is also totally reasonable for this quality of cut. My son came to this barbershop for his haircut before school started. All he needed was the sides trimmed up and the back cleaned up, just a simple cut. I'm not quite sure what happened but when I looked over, his sides have been shaved so close you can see your scalp. I tried to Say something about it being way too short and I was disregarded and the cut continued without a pause to entertain my concern at all. The end of the cut my son was horrified to see how short his hair was on the sides and basically ended up with a soccer mom haircut on the top. He can't style it because it's so thick and fluffy on the top and goes to a weird point in the middle of his forehead. I gave three stars because I could tell that the stylist felt bad and they did not charge. We now have to go to another barbershop and try to fix this cut taking his hair even shorter. He spent all summer growing it out only to have it ruined in 15 minutes. When a child is at a salon with their mother, the stylist should take notice when the mother expresses concerns.
