Before I begin let me say that I have total confidence in Dr. Osias, and would continue going to him if I still lived in the area. This review is about the management of the Castro Valley office. Tuesday I received a postcard with their automatically scheduled appointment, even though I believe I mentioned to them last time I was in their office that I was moving out of the area. The postcard suggested to confirm the appointment by calling or emailing. The email address on the card is info@primaryeyecareoptometrics.com. My first attempt bounced as no such recipient. I tried it twice more, carefully checking that I had entered the email address correctly, and got two more bounces. I tried calling the number on the card and on their website on a Tuesday morning at 10:15. No answer during business hours, which should not happen in a business this size. I got voicemail but could not leave a message because the mailbox was full. (The full voicemail box has happened before.) I tried their online contact form, requesting a call back so that I could cancel the appointment. That was three days ago, and I still have not received a call. Several times I had issues getting my prescriptions refilled via Express Scripts, although I don't have data on whether this was at Primary Eye Care's or Express Script's end. Express Scripts insisted they had not gotten return faxes, the office staff insisted they had sent them. I finally reached them today to cancel my appointment. I voiced the concerns above with a staff member. I must admit she was patient with me while I let her know about the above, and she apologized. She began to say "We've been having problems..." but I cut her off - it's too coincidental for a business to have problems with answering their phone during business hours, a full voicemail box, an issue with email, AND with their online contact form all at the same time. I asked her to relay these concerns to the office manager and let her know that I was writing this review to make sure the staff and Doctors there take notice. When I first began going to the office it was near my home in San Lorenzo, and I didn't encounter these issues. I hope this feedback helps them tighten up their administration. The office staff provides the first impression to a customer, and can make or break a business. Neither their customers nor the doctors practicing there deserve this level of customer service. read more

Pretty expensive eyeglasses. Costco has better lens available for "standard" and for "progressive" lens. Also they want to charge for scratch resistant or polycarbonate which are also standard for Costco lens. I've been coming to this practice for years, since it was at the original location in San Lorenzo across from Arroyo High School. Dr. Osias and Dr. Dea are always fantastic! However I'm very disappointed with my most recent encounter with their new staff members. I always pay for my optomap so I have a more thorough eye exam because of my preexisting health condition. I paid my extra fees with no complaints and I was quoted a certain price for my contacts for pick up. When I came back there was an extra $20 tacked on to my price, the person checking me out stated that whoever took my payment originally didn't select all of the codes, I work in healthcare also and that's not my fault if someone wasn't thorough enough to select all of the appropriate ICD-10 codes, I could've spoken to the manager but was upset at the lack of attention to detail. read more

Although they had a wide variety of glasses, I was searching for a more eclectic style. Nearly leaving, Gilberto talked me through my interest and helped me change my mind. A past creature in my life once said, "Don't fix your eyes 'cuz you'll see how ugly I am." Of course that's not the reason why I procrastinated all this time to have my eyes rechecked again since I barely really wore my glasses. I don't even know where they are anymore! Ironically, I suck at taking care of myself healthwise. Out of the blue, I'm all decided to have my eyes fixed or at least see things around with 20/20 vision. So, I scheduled an appointment at Primary Eye Care in Castro Valley, since obviously it's close to home. The lady who took my appointment was very nice on the phone. I was scheduled to see Dr. Marc Dea. I got lucky because he really is a good eye doctor. Tells you what's he's doing, briefly and simply explains things, gives you options, and has quite subtle sense of humor. So, I got me some contact lenses. (clear and some fun ones ;)) and a nerdy pair of glasses. My insurance covered it so I only paid $90 for the pair of glasses and $5 for my contact lenses! Woot! Woot! Check-up co-pay is $15 and contact lenses fitting is $45. Pretty good deal for both eyeglasses and contact lenses. Everyone is nice and accommodating in this clinic! read more

I love my new glasses. Dr. Dea is great!! The billing was shady. I was told price for exam and rx. Then when i went to pick up glasses the part of billung that medicare part B doesnt approve and is suppose to be written off, per contract, waz added to my bill. I recorded the phone conversation with billing so i have it on tape. Will be taking it to drs so they can hear whats going on. Medicare said this adding unallowed portion of bill to patients bill could get contract cancelled. We'll see. read more

There is absolutely no reason to come here. Eyeglass frames are a rip-off and customer service is non existent. I got glasses from them a year ago and the right frame screw keeps popping off, really poor quality for frames that cost $140. I usually screw it back on myself but decided to go in to get it adjusted to see if they could do anything. 5 min deal and they couldn't fit me in, instead insisted that I make an appointment or sit there and wait until they were all done with their patients. So guess what, I went to Walmart and they got it fixed in 5 min, no questions asked. These guys have lost my business forever. read more

Poor management. No personal assistance. Had to call in to find out status of new glasses. They told me they were ready and to come Saturday or Monday. This place was recommended. Spent over $1000. The doctors that I've seen here have always been good. The staff seems to have a high rate of turnover. Since Dr. Osias retired though, it seems that more mistakes are made by the staff- maybe he had better business control? Another thing I've noticed since he retired, but who knows if it's just a coincidence, is that it's hard to find parking now. Their lot used to always have parking spaces available. Now I've been here at least 3 times and the lot is completely full, with nowhere to park. They don't have that many patients booked at the same time, so my thought is that perhaps all the employees are now parking in the lot. So give yourself extra time in case you have to find somewhere else to park down the boulevard and walk. read more

I would not recommend this place. I had made an appointment and had waited several weeks only to have my appointment canceled just hours before I was scheduled to arrive. No explanation was given and I was only told someone would call to reschedule the appointment on the following Monday. (FYI They will charge you $25 if you had done the same to them) Monday came and went and there was no followup. I called and was greeted with an automated message that the office had been exposed to COVID-19 (Corona Virus.) This was never explained when my appointment was canceled nor was it communicated to me at a later point. DID PRIMARY EYECARE EVEN WARN THE CLIENTS THAT WERE EXPOSED? I can't be sure but their unprofessionalism would cause me concern. Several days later and I still haven't been contacted about rescheduling. Once again It was up to me to call the office and get a status update. The receptionist lied and said they were open Monday (even though they were letting an automated message do their dirty work that same Monday) And I had to pry what happened out of her. She said she would set up a new appointment for me... IN THREE WEEKS. I understand there is a global pandemic and everyone is running a little short staffed or under duress. But it doesn't make sense that I should have to go nearly a month and a half without an appointment because of their mismanagement. Unless that particular optometrist is unavailable for two week because they have COVID (but I stress they didn't communicate this as an excuse) leaving me to only assume they just don't have the ability to accommodate me in a timely manner. read more

Been going to Primary Eyecare for years and have know that they have a complete understanding of my eye health as well as my vision requirements. Using their Opti scan system I have a greater knowledge of any future eye and optic nerve problems. My current glass frames are so good I bought a second pair for backup. Not satisfied at all. I will not be returning. The receptionists and the sales people are awful. The dr was pleasant but not worth the experience there. I should have left when they didn't see me until 45 minutes after my appointment time but I put $25 as a deposit for a Saturday appt. When ringing me up, this deposit was supposed to go towards my purchase. Had I not mentioned it, the woman would not have remembered. I also cannot believe they require an appointment to pick up my glasses. According to the gal, it is the owners policy. I have never had such a terrible experience at an optometrists office.
