Nice location and staff but spotty food Came here on recommendation by a friend. Made the trek out to try some authentic Portuguese food. They were prepping for a big event when we came, so they were a bit distracted when we came in. They offered us seating at the patio or the bar and we opted for outside. Our server for the nice was very nice but clearly stretched thin. She tried to check in frequently but ended up only really dropping by a few times through the night. We get a gambit of items. The garlic steak bites, the mussels with chorizo, the picaha and get the saffron rice and salad as our sides. Food comes out quickly, along with some bread for the table. Very crunchy bread, butter was cold but easy enough to massage to make spreadable. The steak bites and mussels came out first. The mussels were cooked, but the dish was really lacking flavor. You got chicken stock, the smokiness of the chorizo, and the veggies. That's all the flavor you got though, no real seasoning and very basic flavors. It really needed salt. The steak bites were pretty good. Kind of a little open faced Philly cheesesteak crostini, but with untoasted bread. Flavors were solid but also lacking seasoning. Then we got our entree, and the thought was there but it was very much lacking. Meat was unseasoned, overcooked (probably because they threw a cooked steak onto a sizzle plate which took it right over the edge of done) but it did have a wonderful charcoal bitterness which was a welcome choice. Instead of asking for a new one (steak was tender, just well done) we asked for a sauce. They took 5 minutes to make a scratch sauce for us. A mushroom type gravy, which was the highlight of the meal. All the flavor that was missing from the other dishes brought to the forefront, with a strong emphasis on salt and acid to really pop the flavors of the meat. I really enjoyed the sauce. It showed that the kitchen can put out good food, it just was too focused on the event to put up a good showing. It was a shame, but it's good enough to try again some day. Pricing was reasonable for the quality, it's possible to get a good meal here, but your experience can vary. read more

This was a really cool experience. Very homey and cozy feeling. The wait can be a bit long because they don't take reservations though. I love the bread and butter to start! We had multiple baskets of it. My favorite dish was their pork sandwich. I got it with hot peppers, cheese, onions, cheese and an egg. It was absolutely fantastic! My entire party was wishing they got my meal! I will definitely be back for that. Other menu items my party got didn't seem to compare to the sandwich. Management was also super friendly. The restaurant was busy because of Valentines Day. But I didn't get anything I ordered even after patiently waiting. No wine, no appetizer... When I FINALLY got my entre it was basically inedible. Easy to prepare shrimp clams were SO BAD that I feared food poisioning. Like bottom of the dirty aquarium BAD. Interesting menu with Portuguese specialties. Lots of seafood selections and some fun dishes such as the flaming Portuguese sausage appetizer! Portions are generous and prices are far below what you would pay for similar fare, say, in WeHa center. A star deduction due to it being quite noisy, shrimp served in dishes that you didn't expect to have to take out of their shells before taking a bite, and cod fish portions that had a lot of bones. This may be true to the ethnic recipes and is probably a way to keep costs down. Overall experience was good and we will try it again in the not too distant future. read more

Really enjoyed this place! Came here for a late lunch with a friend and enjoyed every bite. Service was friendly and prompt. We each got sangria to start, my white sangria was delicious and perfect for a hot day. The bread was soft, great to have on the side. I ordered the Febras de Porco (boneless pork) with saffron rice and boiled potatoes. The food was cooked perfectly and the brown sauce was very tasty! Enjoyed this meal very much. Such a nice experience for lunch the other day. I was meeting some friends that go to work in Hartford and this place was the perfect spot. The service was really nice, they were able to accommodate my request for a more private table and our waiter was really nice, sad I forgot his name. Everyone at the table enjoyed the food so much I couldn't take any pictures of the entrees: shrimp with baked potato and salads. I was able to get some pictures of the olives, bread and soup. Ok- before I start talking about the next time, I should probably start with what a great time I had on Wednesday. Thank you to Raphela for being such a great bartender too! And of course Phil for being the best tour guide to all things Portuguese. We started with the Cuttlefish, the Chourico Grelhado and the Clams. Order the Chourico Grelhado. They light it up right in front of you and it sizzles and smells so good! It tastes even better! Do it! Also- try the Primavera Mix drink- it's red wine, light beer and sumol mixed together and trying it for the first time- I would definitely order that again. Up next for entrees- the Bife na Pedra---the New York Strip cooked on a hot stone. So much fun! We also tried the app version of the Seafood Mix and the Steak a Roberto- the sauce on it was a mix of mustard, ketchup and Grand Marnier---well damn! They also top it with an egg. Killer! So good! Dip your broccoli rabe in that sauce. Love. We ended with the Bolo Bolacha--highly recommend if you have room for dessert to order this one. The Maria cookies---yum! When we got there, the bar was somewhat busy, the dining room was pretty empty and they were wondering where to seat us, which was confusing. It was quite warm in there, was hoping since it was summer that the AC would make it at least a little cooler, but alas, it did not, we were sweating sitting there. We ordered drinks, I ordered a pomegranate martini, but then the waitress came back and said they didn't have the stuff to make it, so I got a lemon drop instead. Sad to say, it was the worst lemon drop that o have ever had, very tart and not sweet enough like other lemon drops. I drank it quickly so I wouldn't waste the alcohol. Our waitress didn't speak very good English, she said twice about ordering rice as my side dish and corrected her twice saying that I wanted the French fries, not the rice and pointing on the menu. What came out? The rice lol. I stopped the person that delivered our food and he took it back and came back with French fries. They had nothing on them (no salt) and needed to be flavored a bit, so I added some salt. So if you are watching your sodium, their fries are for you! Our main dishes were excellent, I got seafood mix and my boyfriend got the steak a casa with a side of boiled potatoes, which were very much like cubed French fries, again no seasoning or salt and seemed fried or baked bc they were crispy. Reminded me of homefries at some places. Prices were good though and we had leftovers since we also ordered salads. Overall, both of us felt that we likely wouldn't go back. read more

And I finally found a home Where I'll never be alone Right here (Huey Lewis) FInally! No lie -I've had the Primavera Pub bookmarked for around seven years. Ever since a family friend raved about it, I wanted to check it out, and I finally did for lunch today. I walked in at around 12:30 on a Tuesday and I have to say the place was jammed. There was just one parking spot left, and the dining room and bar area were 99% full. Interior impressions? Well it was loud inside, real loud. Lots of spirited conversations at the packed tables. It looked like the clientele was 98% male. There were two TV's on the walls -one showed a soccer match between Portugal and Angola and the other showed a Spanish language talk show, I think the title was A Tarde e Sua, which according to Google Translate means "Your Afternoon". There were two young ladies working the bar and the dining room, and to handle that crowd, they should have had 2 more. It took a while for someone to come over to my table. But that gave me plenty of time to check out the menu and notice their very reasonable pricing structure. They have $4 sandwiches and you can add fries for $2 more! Where else will you see 75 cent appetizers? They had two of them here - a shrimp cake and a cod cake. I had one of each and liked the shrimp cake better -it was a hollowed out semicircle of a crust with some salad shrimps inside and it was pretty good. I ordered the Seafood Mix Appetizer ($10.50) which turned out to be an awesome plate of shrimps, clams and squid in a buttery and garlicky sauce. Freebies included a small bowl of black olives and a nice portion of crunchy bread slices and cubes. I really enjoyed my time here -it was a very different kind of stop for me. There were others too speaking the language that doesn't include the 2 waitress who spoke it of course, can we say authentic? For appetizers we got the seafood combo, clams calamari shrimp in white wine. That was a meal in itself, especially when you take the complimentary bread and start dipping it in the sauce. Came here for a friends birthday and this place is a total hidden gem. You can order off the menu or basically ask for whatever seafood you want- they're fantastic. I have never had calamari that wasn't fried and this was AMAZING! Tender and sweet and omg so good- as was the shrimp. Service was fantastic- our waitress was Monica and she works so hard and was 100% following all the new guidelines as well so we could Enjoy eating outside. Wandered into this neighborhood place that I had frequented in the past...but they had truly enlarged it. Looked like they were still working on it though. Ate in the pub at a high-top. The place was filled with men of a certain age, Portuguese speakers and used to sitting in the same place at the bar. They even argued a bit about who was to sit where. I had the Spinach Soup from the specials board at the entrance. It was not what I had expected as it was so bland and not like the famous Kale Soup at all. The olives were great and there were two kinds of bread in the basket. The Steak Sandwich was also bland even with the salt and pepper added. I had it with onions and no peppers and enjoyed it but was not what the reviews had promised. The home fries were dried out and again needed something to enhance the taste. This place is a hidden gem in the Hartford/Newington line area. Great prices (even these days) and fair portions highlight a fantastic Portuguese menu. The atmosphere reminds me of an old dining hall but it's clean and fairly updated. Ask for the mug of wine. The house wines are usually pretty good. But the flavors... Amazing. We arrived at the restaurant with 4 family members, including my 80 year old mother in law. We ordered our food fairly quickly, but it took at least 45 minutes to be served. I understand that businesses are busy and sometimes short staffed but when we arrived it wasn't busy, and other tables were served before we were served even though we ordered first. Waitress did not check in on us. Once the food arrived there was no apology for the delay. My wife's fish was overcooked. I'm happy to be writing this update. Primavera has gone through a much needed remodel. We ordered Picadinho and Camaroa Vincenta, both were well cooked and the flavors kept you wanting more. We ordered to-go due to Covid and they did a great job of packaging the meal with a bag of bread, cant have a Portuguese meal without it. I wish I could have experienced the new dining room, but maybe next year when Covid is over, but till then I deff will be ordering to-go and exploring the menu more.
