Hot chips with extremely cold tasteless salsa
    Kit N.

I love when the Mexican restaurants bring out the chips and salsa. My initial surprise was that the chips were hot. I think this is a bonus that all the Mexican restaurant should apply. Even if they aren't restaurant made, I think they should be served hot. However, the salsa was so cold and I couldn't taste any seasonings added. Then we ordered iced tea and the iced tea was water. I've vaguely tasted anything different than my sister's Water. We tried to tell the waitress, but unfortunately, she did not understand enough English to comprehend what we wanted. She finally took the iced tea away and brought us water. I was glad when the Bill arrived that we weren't charged for ice tea. Each of us went for the lunch special of three tacos. Each of us had different meat in our tacos. We asked for hot hotter sauce than what our salsa was and she brought, which was the equivalent to regular torpedo or Taco Bell sauce in a bottle. It wasn't anything special. When we had asked for something hotter, I swear that she was actually describing a hotter, chunkier salsa. That's really hot that they have. But that didn't arrive. My sister always wants to get three jalapeños that are like grilled and sometimes salted they come to the table with the crispy skin on them usually and they're a little bit cooked. We asked her for them and it sounded like she was formulating exactly what we were requesting. The jalapeños did not show up. One bite of the tacos and I thought it was delicious for one reason because they were served with the meat being very hot. I mentioned this because not all restaurants. Serve food hot enough anymore. I thought the tacos were pretty delicious. I would've liked to order extra cilantro and onions. But however, the last taco I had, I realized how salty the meat really was. It just hit me all of a sudden. My sister had chorizo and one had the meat with pineapple and I got barrios tacos. I want beans and rice. Have you ever been to a Mexican restaurant where the beans you could just like eat forever? They're just delicious and I found that most restaurants do not have those kind of refried beans. And this restaurant did not the beans and rice to me were tasteless.. no one else was in the restaurant. One man left shortly after we arrived. The reviews look mixed. The decor was nice, the restaurant was clean. The waitress was trying her very best. I just feel like some huge aspect was missing for me to give it more than two stars. The lunch was affordable. I think $13.99 for three tacos on the lunch menu.. I was trying to bring it up a little bit, but besides the waitress not understanding our questions or the additional things we wanted, I still felt like something was missing. I wish I could give a better reason because we all finished our lunch, but we all felt the same way that we just won't be back. It's really a shame because with the right efforts, I believe that any restaurant can make it. I sincerely hope that this restaurant can pick it up before it's too late. The last thing I will mention is that we paid cash but didn't have any change back which should've been about $.90. I've noticed that some restaurants are doing this now. They just give you the bills. I think it should be the consumer or the guest option And that they should get their entire change back. Maybe that justified

    Burrito

This place was near our hotel in Petoskey. They brought chips and salsa right away. The portions were large. We shared the burrito with two folks. Kids plate burrito was very generous too. Family friendly and overall solid food and would recommend. (Also there is a frozen yogurt nearby!)

Crazy that this Mexican food eatery with a small yet delicious menu sits within a 42,000-square-foot building that formerly served as an equestrian center. Now it's an eatery inside several rooms - a part of the largest distillery in Michigan. The BIG room, on a colored, swirling and polished cement floor is decorated with couches, picnic tables, a large screen for videos and corn-hole boards and other games. My spouse and I ordered a quesadilla filled with chicken, avocado, peppers. onions and cheese ($16). YUM. Prepared on a 10-inch tortilla, it was served with limey-tasting sauce of sour cream in a tiny ramekin. We picked it up at the window in the long hallway on the side of the distillery and ate at a picnic table with our bottles of Mexican Coke and Lime Jarrito in the big hall. Although the price is a bit more than we usually spend for a top-notch quesadilla, we probably will return for fish (cod) taco $6.00. The only major drawback is the distance between the parking area and the restaurant and distillery. It's up a myriad of steep steps, although there is a drop-off area near the building for those who are physically impaired.

The hostess greeted me and the wait staff was minimal on interaction and there were 5 people standing by the door when I left and not a single person spoke to me. The wait staff didn't check to see how my food was while I was eating or ask how things were when I was done...instead just asked if I was all set. I still had a half of a margarita and queso and chips. The place was not busy...maybe 4 tables total with several servers. The overall appeal inside is nice and it appears to be clean. This place has potential, but for me if you can't get the basics greetings, pleasantries and a wait staff that checks on your food, I'm out. Oh and the margarita was your basic mix style...I really wish margaritas would be made to order rather than the mix that is so sweet to drink. Unfortunately I won't be back...but if anyone is curious the taquitos do not have chunks of onions in them.

Outside the fray of downtown Petoskey, El Cilantro has a much more relaxed vibe. It's close to the state park and ideal for hungry campers or bikers riding from Petoskey to Harbor Springs. The server definitely gets five plus stars. Helpful, fun and attentive. We enjoyed the complementary chips and salsa while waiting for our food. Our shrimp tacos, which we shared, were enough for two or one very hungry person. They looked appealing, served in a casual "basket" plate. Though everything was fine and satisfying, we both felt there was a lack of seasoning that would have made our meal next-level. We are from Southern California and may have higher standards and more experience with Mexican cuisine than most. The level of flavoring and spice would surely appeal to the palate that does not crave much heat or traditional spices. As campers, we will definitely keep El Cilantro on our list to visit for future trips.

We found ourselves inside of Rodrigo's at capacity and there was a 20 minute wait so we settled for seats at the bar as we were needing to ingest some flavorful cuisine. As it turned out sitting at the bar was a very worthwhile experience. We ordered our drinks which were prepared with precision and care right in front of s as our appetizer was served. We opted for the Rodrigos Queso with beef smothered in delicious creamy Mexican queso along with lots of black pepper and a hint of jalapeno! ! Possibly the best I have ever had! I actually inquired how it was made. The staff were very fun and friendly and we were both equally impressed with out entrees. My friend has fajitas and i went right for a trio of tacos. Traditional soft traditional tacos with shrimp, carnitas and beef. Full of flavor. The tortillas as well as the chips were all made in house and were over the top. Going to a touristy destination in far north Michigan the skeptic in me did not expect quality Mexican food but was wrong. Rodrigo's far exceeded my expectations and was filling thus solving our hunger issues and we had a pretty good time as well. The positives- our friends loved their soup, beer was cold, margaritas $15 which again is pricey considering your charming $20-25/entree. I get inflation has hit us all but I doubt we will be back. Red mesa in Boyne is closer, just as tasty or tastier and about 30% cheaper. Place is tiny. Couldn't move around the dining room but it was cute and themed
