After paying $30 on top of a $40 gel mani for simple nail art (I agreed bc they took me in during Saturday's snow storm and I really needed the mani) the technician had no idea what she was doing. I used to trek down to Grand street, passing at least 3 nail salons on my walk there, just to go to Primp & Polish. When they opened this location, only a block from my apartment, I was ecstatic. Primp & Polish is a step up from your average NYC nail salon. (But it is not a full out spa. Hence 4 stars, not 5). Their classic manicure involves a scrub (sugar based?) in addition to the typical lotion-based hand massage; and their classic pedicure includes a short hot stone massage. If you're looking for a deal, go Monday - Wednesday before 4:00pm for a classic mani/pedi for $34. The spa pedicure is amazing and unique. The foot soak is almost a gel. Very cool and different. Definitely worth it if you want to spoil yourself. Finally, I never feel rushed here. Each technician I've ever had has spent ample time to make sure my treatment is done correctly, from cutting dry cuticles in the winter to adding a 3rd coat of polish to a color that was way more sheer than I thought it would be. Bottom line: in Williamsburg, you can't get a better mani/pedi for the price than at Primp & Polish. read more

I've been coming to Primp and Polish for 3 years. Every time I leave I wonder why I come back. Seriously, I'm going tomorrow and I don't know why. Maybe because Williamsburg has a shortage of good nail places and I'm lazy to search further. Maybe, because I literally live upstairs. Probably, a mix of both reasons. Let me break it down. I am a regular here. A "good" customer. Yet, the staff here makes me feel like garbage on the regular with how totally unaccommodating they are and how unwilling to help. This isn't a one time thing, either. There have been multiple instances that my gel manicure has chipped within a day or two of application. Primp and Polish guarantees their gel for 1 week, yet anytime I have come in to get it repaired they seem genuinely put out that I have the gall to ask. One time they even charged me! I was so put off I didn't even know how to react. This location is frequently totally booked for appointments and they aren't very happy to check if there is availability at any of the others. When you get a pedicure, they barely exfoliate your feet and the massage is approximately 10 seconds. Yay! The only reason why I'm giving them 3 stars is cleanliness and the polite manicurists on staff. It's not the manicurists' fault that their front of house is rude and I definitely don't hold it against them. This place is clean and they sterilize their tools without question. They have a good selection of gel colors and a great selection of high end non-gel polishes (Chanel, Dior, etc.). Finally, do I recommend Primp and Polish? Not really. Do I have an alternative. Nope. When it came time to pay, the bill was $115. I was told that the quoted price was only for the art, not for the cost of the gel manicure. I made an appointment on their website for 4:00 on a Wednesday for a regular mani & pedi. At around 3:50PM I get a phone call saying they are running 15 minutes late for my appointment. A-OK in my book since I live in the neighborhood. I get to Primp & Polish around 4:10 and the girl at the front checks me in and tells me to choose my color. Around 4:15PM I am done choosing my color. I then take a seat and don't get to the pedicure chair until 4:40. Thankfully the pedicure I got from here are one of the best pedicures I have ever gotten in my life! A different nail technician took me for my manicure. As for the manicure it was honestly the WORST manicure I have gotten in my life. Here's why: a) The color I chose apparently was "too sticky" creating a streaky application. She didn't ask me if I was okay with how it looked before application and continued to just paint the rest of my other nails. It wasn't until I saw her go and do my other hand that I told her to please stop, remove it and change the color. b) While she was trimming my nails with the clipper she cut into my nail bed causing me to bleed. I shouldn't have to be injured while getting my nails done!! c) The nail dryers are from the 80s and aren't very efficient. Be prepared to wait 30 minutes for your nails to dry. d) The caucasian man next to me getting a manicure was offered water and tea. I wasn't offered anything. Racial profiling much? I don't understand Primp & Polish. With the amount of money they are charging for a manicure and pedicure you would think you would be getting a fairly decent experience. I have never been treated so poorly - especially by an establishment I was a regular client of. They honestly must get so much walk in clientele that they don't care about people returning. I've had multiple bad experiences and feel like an idiot for continuously coming back - it's just very convenient to where my work is located - and the gel manis ive received are generally okay. That being said the customer service is ABHORRENT with rude technicians and about 3 run ins with lost appointments - with absolutely no apologies or attempts to remedy the situation. Just a cold "there's nothing we can do". But this time takes the cake. Got an upper lip waxing that left serious burns. Not only painful but embarrassing - and on top of that I was on my way to a photo shoot. When I returned the following day was told by a manager that they had a "department" that managed there a complaints (boy I wonder why) and the woman wasn't in that day. Refused to even give me a refund - just a cold "oh my wonder how that happened that's unfortunate someone will call you". It's not like I was asking for a huge sum. This was $7 and the least they could do after I have to suffer the pain and embarrassment of walking around with facial burns. Came here at 6:45pm for a mani pedi. They totally rushed to get out by 8pm. They ran out of clear Essie gel top coat half way through my finger nails and then asked me if they could switch off brands. I'm not sure why there wasn't any more elsewhere. And by the time I needed to leave, there was a huge area on my big toe where the separator had damaged the polish. But by that time, every manicurist left and no one was to be seen but the front desk person. She gave me ten dollars to compensate, but that was less than my tip. I had my first mani at the N9 location today and I was very pleased! This is one of the best experiences I've had in a long time (I usually get manis in Manhattan). The salon is very upscale and spacious with modern decor- white walls, comfortable chairs, sectioned off pedi stations along the side towards the back, wall of nail polish. I love how they offer water and hot chocolate at the reception area when you check in so you can quench your thirst while you wait for an available technician. The manager is friendly and professional, salon is clean from the stations to the restrooms, my nail tech Leah did a great job! Highly recommend her! I didn't get any designs this time but I saw other clients with them and they looked fabulous! Leah was meticulous with my mani- from shaping, cuticle removal, massage and polish application- it was perfect, I have no complaints whatsoever! I am usually not one to write a nasty Yelp review. I usually love this location because the service is better than some of the others but my past experience last week was terrible. First off I made a reservation for 7:30pm the morning before. I had a wedding to go to and needed a mani and pedi. When I then walked in at 7:30pm later that day the woman with brown hair at the front desk (not the usual lovely blonde haired woman) informed me that my appointment was not confirmed. I asked her why there were slots available at 7:30pm online if they did not take appointments that late and informed her that they should change this or not offer these time slots at all if they are not available. She then nastily and sarcastically remarked with a patronizing big grin "okay we'll make sure to do that". This is not the first time I've seen this happen. The online booking system has screwed over many clientele that I have seen walk in, in the past which is what the opposite of what an efficient online booking service should do in cutting out the middleman on the phone. After explaining all this to her she said she "could only offer an express polish change" which I agreed to because what else was I supposed to do the day before a wedding? When I sat down to receive the polish change I asked the lady working on my nails if she could kindly clip one hangnail I had on my finger. She then walked over to a group of ladies standing in the corner including the lady with the brown hair (working at the front desk) to consult with them if she could clip one single hangnail of mine (the least they could do for me as my entire appointment had gone up in smoke and I would be paying for the express color change). The lady who was working on my nails then came back and said: "I cannot clip your hangnail". Naturally, I got up and just left. I will never be back to this location. The staff was nasty, unempathetic and it was terrible customer service. Note to Primp and Polish: Please change your online booking service to the true time's people can come in and also change your email confirmation (that you receive 20-30 mins later) so you do not lose more clientele in the future. I just got my eyebrows waxed here. I won't do it again. The staff was friendly, and helpful. I was looking for an eyebrow wax and upper lip wax. I like my eyebrows thick so I asked the esthetician to not take too much off and just to clean it. I think I made her nervous about taking off too much as she waxed my eyelid and it created a welt. Also, I have sensitive skin. Seconds after she waxed me my skin turned red and puffy. She showed me what they used and it says dermatologist tested, but my skin hated it and remained red and puffy even 15 minutes later. I decided not to get the lip wax and probably won't busy again for any waxing services. It seems most people go there for nails anyway. read more

I'm not really one to leave bad reviews, but I really didn't enjoy my trip to Primp & Polish for a regular mani/pedi. A friend of mine wanted to go there, and I made a poor judgement call in not insisting we go to my usual place. The best part is that the place is very clean, but that's really the only positive note I can make based on this one experience. When I arrived, the woman at the front desk, though very friendly, could not locate my appointment in her computer. I had one. It got resolved within 10 minutes, but it was still a bit of a pain since I was meeting my friend who was already sitting in a pedicure chair, getting her pedi. The pedi itself was very rushed. The massage chairs are not very good, not many functions and no adjustment for height. The one thing I did like about the pedi was that the hot stone part comes with a regular pedi, but it only lasted maybe 30 seconds. All together, my pedi was completed in 10 minutes. That's terribly fast. The polish job was terrible and my cuticles were not trimmed very well. The mani was also very rushed and came out very messy. I could have done a much better job myself. You could see the lines of the layers and it began chipping that night when I got home. The woman that was doing my mani was also a bit rude and yanked at my hands rather roughly a few times. My friend had the same experience with her girl. I did ask for one of the fingers to be fixed because there was a terrible bumpiness to the coat, but the woman who works the front desk came over and looked at it and told me she didn't see a problem, so instead of arguing with them, I just left it. I really couldn't believe they refused to acknowledge the poor job and fix it. I was in and out of there in an hour. If you're like me and you actually schedule these appointments for a little bit of relaxation and pampering, you're not going to get it. In the end it was $50 which is exactly $22 more than I pay at my usual place where they take their time, are very friendly, do an absolutely perfect mani/pedi and have the most comfortable massage chairs. She also didn't take any time with the exfoliation or massage, and she handled my feet/toes pretty roughly. And you know how at some nail salons, while your nails are drying, they rub your shoulders for a minute? Nope, not here. In all, it felt like the tech was in a rush and bored. The atmosphere was interesting, kind of posh, and it looked like they had a ton of selections for gel manicures. They have a lot of color selections for regular polish too. I love P&P! Every time I've gone they always do a great job. It always takes my nails two weeks before I have any chipping and I have a job where I rough handle a lot of boxes that would make my nails chip. They have a wide variety of colors to choose from. It's also very pretty inside. The pedicure area has low lighting and is divided by curtains. I love how they use hot stones during the pedicure leg massage. The manicure area is a beautiful nail bar. Everyone is very nice and friendly. The hours are great too! They stay open until 8, which makes it easy to get an after-work appointment for most. They always have appointments available, but not because they aren't busy, they are just very well staffed! Next to try are their massages! $10 for 10 minutes, $20 for 20 minutes, and $30 for 30 minutes. Such a relaxing experience! read more

The prices ARE high, way higher than they should be when they often cut your cuticle and make you bleed. Today was the last straw. Came in before my vacation for mani/pedi and some nail art on a few fingers. I wanted some palm leaves for my tropical Christmas. Their instagram gives the impression that they know how to do nail art, but it's clearly only one person. First, they used very very old thick opi nail polish, the kind of old nail polish that looks like your pulling a slice of pizza from the pie when you pull the brush out. I thought maybe it would be okay but as it started to dry it was thick and clearly bubbling. She started the nail art and instead of palm trees they looked like rosemary sprigs. Just one big line with straight branches coming out, they were charging $7 per nail and I had to pay upfront, which they act is so you don't have to fish through your purse for your wallet and ruin your nails but I saw the true meaning today. When I complained and told her the nail polish was bubbling they said it was fine and put another coat of clear coat. I said no, and told her the nail art is also not working out after she started the first nail which was proving to be more of a disaster. I was already running late to head back home to head to holiday party so I asked to just remove all the polish and to give me my money back. They refused to give me my money back for the manicure, just the nail art. I told them how am I leaving with a full manicure without any polish, they had no answer. They did hard gel extension when I asked acrylic extension, and charged me more. They were POOR IN COMMUNICATION AND I FEEL DECEIVED. I was looking for a place for acrylic extension for my teenager daughter on last Christmas Eve as she demanded it as a Christmas gift under this pandemic. I called a few places comparing prices and pre-cautions for Covid-19 and chose this one despite the higher price. The price they said was $92 with regular nail polish on top and $117 with gel polish on top, while other places said $40-60. The price was a lot higher than little places around my house, but I didn't want to raise chance my daughter to be exposed to Covid-19 in small and packed place. I chose $92 with regular nail polish on top of acrylic extension, but ended up paying $157. They charged $40 for design fee (very simple wave pattern) and switched to gel polish saying the design that my daughter pick need gel polish, while I was gone leaving my daughter there. I am not sure if they explained this clearly to my 13 year old girl and she agreed this without knowing what was really going on. I was shocked by the bill they gave but I didn't want to argue and ruin Christmas Eve of anyone around, so I paid $157+ $20 tip, total $177 for acrylic extension. Things were relatively fine upto this point. It was a lot pricier but I made the choice in the first place and left my 13 year old girl unattended, which might be my another mistake. Real surprise came after 2 weeks. Nails were falling off so I called to ask fix up, and then found out what my daughter got was HARD GEL EXTENSION, NOT ACRYLIC EXTENSION. So I finally understood why the price was a lot higher than other places. I felt so DECEIVED and TRICKED by the receptionist at the Plimp and Polish, not telling me the truth that they don't do acrylic do only hard gel. This is matter of principle and clear communication. I clearly asked acrylic and they gave me the price for hard gel without further explanation. I thought they charged premium for the location and fancy interior. I could make myself feel better thinking that hard gel extension might be healthier choice for nails than acrylic, and paid higher price for it. I can deal with this financial reasoning part. However the process to get there was through hiding, deception and lie. Deceiving customers to get a job and charging even higher price for the wrong service is totally, fundamentally WRONG things to do. They would defend themselves and blame the receptionist, but she represents your business as the first line customer service person. read more

I wish Yelp let us leave half stars. This place is a 2.5. My pedicure looks okay... but for 32 dollars it lasted less time than my friends manicure. The hot stones were under my feet for a total of thirty seconds. My legs and feet were not massaged at all which is pretty standard with just about any pedicure. The real kicker though is that they have these floor length string curtains hanging in front of the pedicure chairs. I don't know why, and as I was walking to the counter to dry my toes the technician didn't hold the curtain and so it literally swiped the fresh paint right off my toenails. Seems like a really badly placed design element. Also there were five chairs in my pedicure section and at one point another technician brought in another client who sat right next to me?? Why? What is relaxing about that? And this client had A DOG with her. I love pets but that has to be some sort of health violation and it's also just not relaxing. Why the heck would they let a client bring an unleashed dog inside?? I started coming here 4 years ago and used to really love this place. Unfortunately, it has really gone down hill for me. I tried to give it a chance but continue to leave disappointed. It's just not worth the money anymore, as the quality of manicure and pedicure is not the same as it used to be. Some of the girls are also too rough, I almost always leave with bleeding cuticles, and my nails don't last like they used to. They also always seem to be out of certain gel colors, and it has become nearly impossible to ever match your gel manicure to your classic pedicure which has been really frustrating, a waste of time at the beginning of every appointment, and often results in settling for colors I'm not ever happy with. Its a nice space and has felt clean during Covid-19, but it's way too inconsistent to justify the price. It no longer delivers the same high-end experience. read more

I would they their service isn't up for what they appear to be. They aren't prompt about their appointment times which is very important for me. I was sadly disappointed with my experience here. I'm not a big mani-pedi person but came here as a treat to myself and because I wanted pretty nails for my upcoming business trip. I was so excited to have my first gel manicure that would last at least 2 weeks without chipping and was already planning fun designs for the future! The salon itself is pretty nice and the selection of colors is great. The pedicure was ok, the foot massage kind of lame and the hot stones don't really do anything for me. The manicure was weird, in that they don't soak your nails and cuticles before they start to go to town on them. And it's one of those places where you have to get up from your chair midway through the manicure and go wash your hands after they exfoliate them-which I am never a fan of. I paid $60 for a gel manicure and regular pedicure plus $12 tip, which is not cheap by any means. Anyway, I left the place feeling so-so about the entire experience but I was pretty jazzed on my choice of colors! Flash forward to two days later when I'm on my business trip. I take off my shoes and both of my big toes were already chipped! After two days! Most pedis I've had usually last 3 weeks without a chip. On the fifth day, imagine my surprise when my gel manicure starts peeling too! I decided to go back and visit the the salon on the day I got back, one week after I got the mani-pedi and showed them what happened. They offered to do a polish change on my hands and touch up my toes. I wish I could say that this remedied my problem, but sadly it did not. My nail technician was rude, hurried and did a sloppy job and would not look at me and acted like she was too important to be re-doing my nails. I gave her a good tip (why?) regardless of how she treated me and she ran to the back as soon as she was finished. I examined my nails and they looked HORRIBLE. There were multiple bubbles in almost every single nail and she had painted over my cuticles on several nails which leaves a thick ridge when they grow out. I sat around collecting my things and feeling like a total moron when the front desk receptionist/manager asked how everything was. I told her, "honestly, I will not be coming back here" and showed her how shitty my nails looked. She even conceded that they looked really bad and brought it to the nail technicians attention. But they then decided it must be the fault of the nail polish (Gelish) and not the crappy application. As an apology or to get me to come back they offered to give me my next gel manicure for the price of a regular mani. Meanwhile, the redo of my toes and nails started chipping just a couple days later so I don't know if I will take them up on that offer. IMHO, this place is a rip-off. I'd rather go to a cheaper place, then I won't feel like suck a moron if my nails start chipping in a a couple days.
