Cozy step back in time! We rode the Maryland flyer and walked up hill to get lunch from the depot. The classic cheeseburger was juicy and the onion rings were hot, crispy and fresh. The chicken signature salad was fresh and the fried chicken chunks were sweet and mildly spicy. Service was efficient and friendly. I'm always down for an old fashioned diner and this is exactly that in an old narrow, deep, classic "main street" building . Best of Both combo: Eggs over easy, sausage patty, 1 pancake, home fries, and rye toast. All was good but home fries were really good and seasoned well. Service was friendly but seemed a bit under staffed which I think is often true in mom and pop places. Beware, I heard that Breakfast menu ended just after we ordered, around 1100, so not an all day breakfast diner which seemed odd to me. Will definitely go again though. read more

From JUL 2017 to DEC 2020 we lived in Swansee, IL. Our very first weekend, before we got our household goods delivered we went to a little place called Main Street Cafe. We ended up going just about every Sunday morning for the entire 3 years (and +40 lbs)... My spouse says, and I agree, Princess is that kind of place. If we lived in the area, we would likely go at least a few times a month. She read some reviews, discovered the story of the Truman booth. Of course, when we got there, she actually stopped right there without realizing and so we ate where a President and Bess had breakfast so long ago. I was Army, enlisted, and officer, so ironic and humbling to sit in the spot where the man who made that possible (integration of the US Military 26 JUL 1948) also spent time. The food is simple and good. The people are nice and efficient. They do "leave you to your peace"...some intepret that as neglect, I prefer that over hovering and rushing me out. The other darling thing (maybe not everyone's taste) was the grandfather of one of the worker's son's running roast/riff/joshing of the little fella the whole time we were there. I have to give it to the kid, he gave as much as he got at times. We will come back to Frostburg, and we will eat at Princess Restuarant. read more

In every small town, especially ones where a college is also located, you will find a place like Princess Restaurant. Situated in Frostburg, MD - home of Frostburg State University - Princess Restaurant is a throwback to a homey 1950's diner. It's a place where the college students as well as locals both meet to exchange greetings over cups of strong coffee, large plates of food, all at reasonable prices. I stopped by here last December and was immediately greeted with friendly "hellos" as I took a seat at one of the Formica topped booths. Even though I initially had my eye on the NY Strip and Eggs breakfast platter (since I'm a sucker for all day breakfast joints), I instead opted for their daily special which was the double pork chop platter. Two center cut chops were fried on a flat top griddle and then served with choice of two sides (mine were the mashed potatoes with gravy and mac n' cheese). Chops came out still sizzling and had right amount of salt and pepper seasoning. I would, however, recommend not letting the pork sit around on the plate too long, since this cooking method can make the meat tough after more than 10 minutes. It was still tasty, but just something to note. Sides were solid; nothing great but what you would expect. Mashed potatoes were homemade with large chunks of irregularly cut potatoes and a few pieces of skin mixed in. Mac and cheese could've used a bit more milk and/or cream since that dish also congealed after 5 minutes. I really enjoy dining at places like the Princess Restaurant. It's been operating since 1939, so you know the food's gotta be good to have that type of longevity. If you're passing through this part of MD which also borders near PA and WV, I definitely recommend pulling off the Interstate for some comfort food served with small town hospitality. read more

Cute, retro diner in downtown Frostburg. The menu is standard diner fare but it is only a few pages, not 20 pages like you would see in NYC. The waitstaff was super friendly. Everything looked clean and tidy. The meals were okay. I had the chopped steak with two side, green beans and fries. It was $8 but I upgraded for grilled onions for an additional 50 cents! The beans were really good and the chopped steak is about what you'd expect. But it was $8 so I couldn't be disappointed. I liked that the portions weren't ridiculous because that allowed me to have a hot fudge sundae for dessert. Yum! The place has been in business for over 50 years and it seems everyone working there takes pride in the business. If you need a hearty meal for a reasonable price , Princess is your place! read more

Step back in time in this diner like restaurant...but note that this is not retro...its the real deal. We happened to sit in the booth that Bess and Harry Truman sat when they had dinner in 1953 (theres a picture and a brass plaque commemorating the event) the ladies working were friendly and efficient. The locals were very welcoming as well. We had breakfast...a meat lovers omelet and a cheese omelet. They are prepared on a grill so flatter than most places, but still very tasty. Bill for our meals and coffee and tea was $22. Overall, a very pleasant experience and we will stop in again as we travel through the area. read more

This restaurant deserves high marks alone for how long it's been around. I typically hit up this restaurant once or twice a year if I'm nearby or my cousin from Hawaii is in. We like to have breakfast here or order the hot turkey sandwich during a cold Frostburg night. They also have recently started showcasing these season themed milkshakes on Instagram that are interesting. The seats on the booth side are old, and hard to sit in if you're tall. I appreciate how fast they are when getting your food out and I also see that they allow small businesses to come in and showcase their work, art or craft. read more

So first the good. Ham steak was huge and tasty. Overall it was a great meal, food wise. My problem is it took over an hour to get my food. After sitting there 30 minutes I heard the waitress tell other patrons that they had received an order for a basketball team to go and that it would be awhile. I had not been given that warning. As I was doing a 75 mile bike ride on the C&O that day this information would have been helpful. I'm ok with an hour wait at a 5 star restaurant, not at a diner for breakfast. I will return next ride bc the food was excellent and I don't anticipate this happening again, but I'm not happy about that wait. read more

After riding the WMR from Cumberland to Frostburg, we had a little more than an hour before our return. We chose to pop into the Princess Restaurant for a late lunch. Our waitress Sam was personable and attentive. My husband ordered the Princess burger with fries and gravy. I had a Reuben with fries. Both were tasty. Listening to the banter of the employees made us chuckle. The decor was definitely retro diner. I was disappointed that the table jukes were out of order. My Frostburg student daughter declared this her favorite local restaurant and dragged me in one night. It was very good and so much food that I was able to take some home for lunch the next day. I had the roast turkey with mashed potatoes gravy and a side of green beans. The roast turkey came with dressing/stuffing. It was very very good with the turkey very moist and the dressing very tasty. It was the comfort food I needed and very filling. Diner staff was awesome and the ambience is just very cute in general. This place was disappointing. We ordered dinners. I ordered the meatloaf dinner, and my husband ordered the chicken and shrimp. The vegetables on both our meals tasted like they came straight from a can, as did the soup. The salad was sad. (I had baby carrots just thrown on mine.) For drinks we ordered "house made" lemonade that, I assure you was made with store bought lemon concentrate (such as Real Lemon), and made up in the store. It was awful! The rice pudding" that was supposed to come at the end never came. The chicken and shrimp was tolerable, but only had two shrimp. The herb pasta that came with it was over cooked, and not well seasoned. I would be beyond surprised if the meatloaf was not frozen and they warmed it up. It tasted like a TV dinner. The mashed potatoes were from a box. If you like frozen meals, but don't want to warm them up yourself, this is the place for you! Otherwise go somewhere else, or stick to the hamburgers and chicken and shrimp. read more

This morning service was extremely slow. I started not to come here but read all be of the 4 star reviews. I asked for my eggs over well and you can see by the picture, that's not what I received. The home fries and the bacon on my wife's plate were lukewarm. She asked for well done home fries, but that instruction was lost in the translation. It felt like this place needs a short order cook. Wow.. What a gem! Old style diner with vintage atmosphere , good food and reasonable prices . Very clean & fast service. Chicken soup, hot roast beef. I even sat in the Harry Truman booth. I was so impressed at how clean it was. Clean booth, clean floor. No graffiti or ripped seats. Only downsides I saw were the corian countertop ( too modern) and while the booths were great looking, they were probably made for teeny boppers of yesteryear. read more
