In Jeff City for the weekend and love to visit microbreweries so stopped by in late afternoon on a Saturday for late lunch/early dinner. Love the inside design concept of barred prison cells. Outside there is a nice large patio for warmer weather with some of it under cover with fans and there are 2 boccie courts with lights next to the patio. We shared a beer flight - each 7 oz/larger than normal! We shared a yummy Greek pizza. Staff was friendly but service was a bit slow initially but once we got our beer flight, service picked up. Pizza had lots of toppings and was very tasty. Limited beer choices but we found ones we liked and all were good. Would recommend. read more

We arrived a little after 1pm and ordered by 1:15. It was a simple order of salads and sandwiches. The restaurant was busy yet it took 45 min to receive our food. To the waitress' credit, she came back a few times to apologize for the wait. When the food arrived, my prime rib sandwich arrived with burnt bread and a single thin slab of dry roast beef. It was sent back and I chose not to have it replaced because we had already been waiting a hour at this point and had plans for the afternoon. Two others ordered salmon and said it was also dry with poor flavor. We were excited to try this place but unfortunately we are very disappointed. I usually will give a restaurant a second chance but I will not be back here. The food clearly deserves 1 star but I gave it 2 because the beer was tasty. read more

Personally, I think the beer is better than the food. I had the brown ale, which was smooth and delicious. I enjoyed the grilled portabella salad for lunch. It was pretty tasty, although nothing special. For our appetizer, our table shared the homemade beer bread and cheese. It was good beer bread made in their brick oven. I realized after dining here and driving around Jefferson City, that this is probably one of your best dining options. I don't think there are too many choices and I would recommend Prison Brews over most restaurants in town just judging by websites and appearance. read more

Came here after a conference at like 4pm so there weren't that many people there. It's a nice space, well air-conditioned, with booths that resemble cells. Our waitress was real nice and flexible, even letting me order off the kid's menu because they didn't have chicken fingers on their adult menu and I had a craving. Well-priced drinks too, $3 for beer while we were there, which got my colleagues very excited. read more

Well ya don't go here for spectacular service is what I can say. It's not the worst I've had but you can easily say that you won't be bothered a thousand times while eating. Their food is always good and hot. I love their burgers and I hear their pizza is good. I not a big restaurant burger girl but I always order theirs. Their beer is also pretty good but I'm not really a drinker lol they have a patio people all seem to like but I've never been out there. I did enjoy some live band here one night which is something I love. Not sure if they do that anymore though. They have bocce ball there... Don't know how to play but must be fun lol. Their bathrooms are always clean that I've noticed. They are also always pretty busy every time we have gone. Just remember to tell your server if you want/need anything because it's likely that they will be slow coming back. Otherwise we like this place quite a bit. read more

This is a nice bar that has a good selection of food, far more than I expected when I walked in. The pizzas are good, the burgers are great, but its the buffalo chicken wrap I've been thinking about all afternoon. It's not flashy, but it was great for lunch & I'll be back for sure. read more

Stopped in after the prison tour. Was amazed by their beer! The IPA had so much flavor, easily competing with breweries in KC. Wish I could get some here. Ordered French fries, which were handcut and had really good flavor. The environment was super cool, decorated like a prison. All in all, great experience. read more

Not as good as they used to be and their beers are just ok. Used to like their food a lot and go often but I feel they have gone to more boxed or frozen versions of what some of their best options were. The pizzas used to be amazing and now they are just so so. Kind of sad. read more

This was my second visit to Prison Brews. The beers are good, at least the two I tried. Kind of gimmicky names, I had a Deathrow Oatmeal Stout and an I Ain't Your Honey Wheat. The Oatmeal Stout had a bit more coffee flavor than I expected, but it did satisfy, the honey wheat was what I expected and had a nice refreshing flavor. The burger I had was at least okay. What caused me to give this such a high rating was the sweet potato fries. They were excellent. Lightly fried, liberally dusted with brown sugar and cinnamon. We come here every time we visit family. We are pretty pick pizza eaters and enjoy the ones they make here. The pretzels are great to start with. We got a house salad which was a very good salad. The Greek pizza is very tasty. read more

Great atmosphere and ambience. We got a prime rib sandwich, prison brews club and vegetarian pizza. Best sandwich was the prime rib. Horseradish sauce was on point, crispy bread and wonderful melt in your mouth meat. The pizza was ok but I've had better. We got the beer sampler for two of us and definitely glad we had a DD service was quick but waitress seemed nonchalant. A small trivial complaint was when we upgraded to onion rings and paid 2$ extra which is ok but when we asked for ranch were not notified of the extra charge. Now we know. The service pushed it to a 4. But let me tell you, I'm a beer snob from California. I frequent breweries, I've been drinking micro brews since sierra Nevada pale ale was exciting (still a decent beer). Prison brews rye IPA is great. So is their brown ale. I was impressed that this small place was putting out such quality, not because it's small but because I was sitting in the middle of Missouri and expected to be unimpressed. We decided to stop here for a late lunch after our tour of the State Pen and I'm so glad we did. We ordered two appetizers, the soft pretzels and the breaded green beans. Both absolutely wonderful. One person in our party did the micro sampler which is an absolutely great price and a great way to market their own beers. He loved almost every beer. Our lunch itself was good, the fries were definitely subpar but my bratwurst was excellent. Pizza looked very good although I didn't try it. For dessert we had the big cookie with ice cream which was amazing. Service was great. Bathrooms were clean. No complaints other than the fries not being good. Prison Brews is a good place to visit if in Jeff City. The beer they brew is decent and they have regular AB products in bottles too. The space is comfortable, food is typical brewpub stuff and the staff is very friendly! I will be back to this spot as it has the best beer in town and is inviting. Give it a try! read more

Get the oatmeal stout. Salads and appetizers are quick on a busy lunch day. I ordered fish and chips. For $20.00 it filled me up easily.

We had a wonderful, fun dining experience! The jail cells are cool. The wood fire oven pizza was great, and the cranberry-walnut salad was the best I've ever had--fresh and loaded with toppings. The service was friendly, and the quintet playing Christmas carols was an added benefit. We will definitely stop here again when we come through town. read more

We chose to sit outside yesterday evening, and were seated immediately, but had to wait at least 10 minutes before anyone took our drink order. It may have been longer. Finally, waitstaff arrived, and then several people were waited on before us, when we were the second party to be seated outside. OK. Allison, our waitress, was attentive, friendly, and bustling about, and managing the entire outdoor seating area with no help. Our food was also the last to arrive, and my husband received the wrong fries, but we were hungry. Food was OK. At least it was hot. Husband received wrong side order, my fish sandwich was hot, but nothing special, and the kids had standard American fare. I appreciated and complimented Allison on her hustle. But then we spent at least 10 more minutes waiting for the check, and we weren't the only ones wondering where our waitress had gone. My husband went to the waitress stand inside to ask for the check, and saw Allison serving as bartender. I would have spoken to the manager, but at that point, we just wanted to leave. This place seems to suffer from either poor management or they were severely understaffed the evening we were there, but we won't take another chance on it, since the food was average at best. read more

It was cool to see the brewery while eating as well. Our server seemed a little on the shy side but she did well. Our food was incredible. The portion size was huge and the price was right! We did a 3 and a half hour ride to tour the Missouri State Penitentiary and decided the Prison Brewery sounded like an interesting place to eat. Nice place, great patio, good food, and amazing service. Thanks to Allison (and her friends) for making us feel welcome and giving us as much crap as we gave her. Well worth the visit. read more
