I had shoulder surgery due to a torn labrum on my dominant side. I started at-home physical therapy after ~2 weeks and in-office physical therapy ~5 weeks after surgery. After ~6 months, I had regained 100% range of motion. I'm very happy with my results and I have to say thanks to Pritikin Physical Therapy and to Dr. Knapp (my surgeon). Highlights: Andy was incredibly helpful in recovering. He was always upbeat and very knowledgable. Whenever I had a question, he would break it down for me in simple terms and, if I was interested, be happy to break out one of his textbooks to show with illustrations/diagrams. Our sessions generally followed this structure: 1) Review any urgent issues (namely new pain) 2) Assisted improvements (I'd lay down, he'd move my arm/shoulder, apply pressure, break apart scar tissue, etc) 3) Directed stretching (I'd stand up and stretch my arm/shoulder, hang from a pull up bar, pull on a rope, etc) 4) Build strength (plank, throw progressively heavier balls against a trampoline, light boxing) 5) Assign homework (what stretches should I be doing at home? How frequently? Can I start to lift weights X, Y, Z? If not, what is something else I can do? For example, I used to plank a lot, but given the shoulder, I could no longer do it so he showed me a few exercises to isolate my abs that would work given my situation.) I've tried a few different physical therapists and chiropractors over the years. Most had been terrible... and there was one in Beverly Hills that was ok, but Andy totally set a new bar. I have since visited Andy for misc ailments like being completely immobilized by throwing out my back and having ongoing lower back pain. Andy knows his stuff really well, I had an excellent experience with him. I tore my ACL couple of months back and underwent physical therapy with him. He helped me greatly to recover and continue to have active lifestyle. His in-depth knowledge made me understand what role each exercise or part of physical therapy plays in overall strengthening. That really helped me internalize the exercises so that I can continue doing them long after the end of physical therapy and become less prone to injuries. I ended up seeing Andy Pritikin after seeing the positive reviews on this site, and now that he's successfully healed by rotator cuff injury, it's time for me to add to the praise. He's highly intelligent, no-nonsense, funny, and very hands on. I actually looked forward to going to the sessions, if you can believe that. If you're an athlete who's bogged down with an injury and want to be 100% as quickly as possible, Andy's the guy to go see. I've had back problems for over twelve years and have experienced many physical therapists, but Dr. Andrew Pritikin is far better than anyone I've ever seen. I've been going to Andy for 10 years now with various problems (neck, hip, lower back, you name it...) and he has been able to find and address the source of a given pain every time. We start with some therapy sessions in his office in combination with a detailed, but short exercise plan for home and within a few weeks I am back to sleeping and moving comfortably. He'll point out which part of my posture is adding to the problem and helps me adjust to a better way of sitting, driving, holding my shoulders, etc. to ensure that my pain does not return. I can bring my 2 year old to the office and don't hear from her the entire time, because there is a room filled with toys and Andy knows how to sweet-talk any child! I just went back to see him again, because I struggle with numb hands during the night, which I now know stems from my tight shoulders. We are working on relaxing them and strengthening certain muscles so I don't compensating by raising my shoulders all the time! I hate to be a broken record (looking at some of these other reviews) but he actually did pay attention in class and knows everything about human anatomy and how the body works. Ask him anything - he'll have the answer and most of the time a big book with a picture to explain it better. I rehabbed my ankle at Pritikin PT after having arthroscopic surgery and injections. Andy was highly recommended by my ortho because he gets results and works with athletes and dancers. He uses all kinds of healing modalities and treated the whole body as it related to my injury including my legs, hips and back. I haven't found any PT who also does manual therapy as effectively as Andy. So few PT's do manual therapy and this is his main thing. He can work deeply into the damaged tissue and I love that I get a physical workout as well. I would totally recommend his services over anyone else. read more

I have been a lifelong athlete including college basketball and volleyball, 7 years of rugby, and still competing as I turn 40 next month. In 2001 during a rugby match i suffered a complete dislocation of my left elbow. It folded 180 degrees the wrong way after 2 large props landed on me (roughly 525lbs, elbow folded like a toothpick). I was lucky to fully recover from that trauma and return to the pitch after being told I would never play any sport again. I survived a head on crash in 2010, triple fracture to my tibial plateau, herniated my C3 in my neck and L5 in my back. Over the years I've had successful surgeries and rehabilitation's. 2002-03, two Shoulder surgeries. (misdiagnosed Mumford procedure, and then correct procedure, torn rotator/labrum repair with 2 bone spur extractions). Now 2014, 2 more knee surgeries. This knee surgery was to "fix" the first ACL reconstruction in which the graft came loose. No injury or tear, just old technology from 1993. New technique will prevent any slipping of the graft. In between May and Novembers knee surgeries I had a foot surgery, in which they severed my big toe. (Chevron bunionectomy) Enough injury resume... For the past 5 years I have been a fitness professional, specifically doing post-physical therapy training, injury prevention, and strength and conditioning. I have now had more education and I do know a bit about the physical therapy process. I came here to Dr. Andrew Pritikin from a friend referral, knowing I had pain following this ACL reconstruction 10 weeks ago. My surgeon explained to me, my last PT at "RA physical therapy" was "hurting me". Not only hurting me but also risking my recovery as well as 2 additional surgeries!!! During the recovery phase It is paramount to have the right professional no matter what you think you know, or how much you like the physical therapist as a person. Overall I have fired 4 physical therapist out of 10. Usually because of poor care, or lack of experience. Finding a good physical therapist is tougher than finding a mechanic that wont rip you off, or for the ladies a stylist that "Knows Your Hair". The experience that "Pritikin Physical Therapy" provides and specifically Andy is the best Ive ever received. Both the care and experience combine to get the results with a hint of compassion. :) Its tough work, and Andy is great at putting the patient at ease. I first came to his office due to a whiplash injury caused by being rear-ended, but he has helped me with many other issues as well, and I intend to return to him whenever the need arises in the future. I suffer from a movement disorder, and Andy has shown that he is very knowledgeable about my physical limitations as well as extremely empathetic and pleasant to work with. Unfortunately, this story starts with an injury. Mine was a torn Achilles. The repair was successful, but for this injury surgery is usually the easy part. It's the recovery period that's long and uncertain. As a former athlete, sport is an essential part of my life, so I was committed to do everything in my power to make a full recovery. To do so, I'd need help. A ridiculously good physical therapist. I got that and more with Andy. I turned to Yelp for my search and made my decision based on the positive reviews here. Fast forward three months and I'm ahead of schedule making a fantastic recovery. Andy was conservative when needed, and has pushed me when necessary. In addition to the right treatment at the right time, he has this incredible database of knowledge on how the body works. But what sets Andy apart is that hard-to-describe ability with his hand. The right spot, with the right pressure. Always. From time to time it hurts, but I walk away relaxed and pain-free. Finally, outside of my Achilles rehab, I've come to rely on him for advice on fitness, nutrition, stretching, and occasionally life in general. He's a mentor in a lot of ways. I started seeing Andy about 9 months ago after dislocating my ankle (technical term was a subtalar dislocation) playing basketball. At the time, I couldn't barely walk without a limp, but after going twice a week, I was back on the court three months later. I credit him with a very successful recovery, and I can't imagine my ankle feeling any better. I've continued going once a week since, initially to ensure no setbacks occurred and to further strengthen the ankle and more recently to help with back and neck pain. I'm writing this review now as it seems I'm good enough to no longer need PT for awhile! As for the specifics, making sure my insurance was accepted and scheduling the first and subsequent appointments were a breeze (credit to Jen and now Junior). Sessions have run ~45 min with the first 10-15 minutes spent on manual therapy, which I'd describe as Andy inflicting pain (somewhat gleefully I might add) to loosen or soothe any pain. Well worth it and I would've gone just for that. The remaining time is spent stretching, balancing, strengthening and doing a wide range of exercises to restore full functionality. He also recommended a brace and other training aids to use at home to support the recovery, as well as lots of time icing (slushies as he calls it). He knows when to push hard and when you might need a lighter session, is funny/friendly to boot. Parking/traffic is the only bad part but typical for the westside. I was always able to find metered parking within a block of the office. The building has parking too that's easily accessible but a more costly option. Thanks Andy! read more

Dr. Pritikin is unique among physical therapists. He spends the entire appointment with his patients and incorporates a whole body approach to his practice. This is incredibly important to me as a patient as I was in a car accident. I'm seeing Dr. Pritikin for a neck injury, but he's also addressing some underlying issues relating to my shoulders and my ankles that are all related to the accident. I did originally try a different physical therapist before seeing Dr. Pritikin and all they did was heat, e-stim, and some stretching. Same thing every visit with no results. Now that I'm seeing Dr. Pritikin, I'm finally starting to feel normal again. He's great at explaining what he's doing as well, so I feel much more knowledgeable about how my body works and how to keep it strong on the future. read more

Okay... never really written a review on Yelp. Not sure where to really begin, but Dr. Pritikin... Andy... and not that he needs one at all... it's more that he DESERVES the kudo's and great reviews he gets. You see... I'm one of those idiots who happens to like pushing the envelope on certain activities to the edge... backcountry ski, rock climbing, free ride mtn. biking, high altitude mountaineering, along with a 'yet to do' bucket list of things that... at the ripe age of 53... have some questioning my sanity. On Dec. 19, 2009 and shortly after rehabbing a torn rotator cuff from rock climbing... I had a pretty bad ski accident that tore my ACL on the right requiring a complete reconstruction (Jan. '10) that included 2 screws embedded into knee. Super worried that I wouldn't be able to drop the same cliff drop that tore it in the first place... I sought the best PT in the Santa Monica area. Andy was highly referred and rightfully so. PT was tough... not easy... both mentally and physically as I stood on the sidelines of all of the activities that make up who I am... or at least a big part of me... physically the body doesn't recover or recuperate as it once did. More importantly... I knew I was moving up to Mammoth permanently (Oct. '10) and my biggest concern was... was i going to be able to ski that following season. Answer was... yes. I found myself back skiing that following season. Still conscious of my recent surgery and not dropping off cliffs at that point...but skied 56 strong days all the same. In May of 2012. I had a backcountry free ride mtn. bike accident consciously dropping off some boulders that I had ridden a dozen times before... but this time... I was not so fortunate. I went over the bars right and fell down several boulder drops directly on my head. I had to be transferred from Mammoth Hospital to Cedar Sinai where I spent the first 36 hours in critical neuro ICU followed by another 5 day stay at Hotel D'Cedar Sinai. I suffered a traumatic brain injury, herniated my C5, 6, 7, in my neck and had a spinal cord injury on my C6 which put me about 2mm away from being paralyzed from the waist down. When I went back up to Mammoth... none of the PT's up there provided me with a sense of comfort that they actually knew what they were doing... more importantly... it felt to me... like I was just 'another' patient to them. I ended up coming back down to LA in order to get the proper PT I needed from Andy. I now live back in LA and most recently... as of 4 weeks ago... I tore my achilles tendon... downhill skateboarding on a longboard. Due to a snafu on my part... my medical insurance won't kick in until Jan. 1st, 2015 preventing me from getting the necessary MRI and more than likely surgery that will be needed. Knowing this... and having been through the surgery drill several times before... I knew it would be important to start at the very least... pre-surgery PT. I reached out to Andy... explained my situation to him and without hesitation his first response was.. 'Mikey... let's get you in here and see what's going on'. Andy... somehow managed through his insanely busy schedule to fit me in. And not only did he fit me in... he fit me in at a time when he should've been at home with his family. THAT... is who Dr. Andy Pritikin is. He is truly the best. NOT only as a PT... more importantly... as a truly caring human being. Andy.... I truly thank you for helping put my body back together and keeping me able to continue to do the activities that I love and more importantly... a big part of who I am and my life.
