I'm an adult driver (30y+) who only had experience with right-hand drive a month ago, but thanks to Beckham and Long, I managed to pass the DMV driving test on my first try today (27 May 2022). I started my instruction with Beckham who is very experienced with driving and knows the ins-and-outs of the testing process. The instruction was very well organized. Each lesson was 2 hours ($60/hour) and Beckham was very efficient with the planning the route and pickup/dropoff locations so that I got as much time as possible behind the wheel. The first few lessons involved driving around small roads near the La Jolla neighborhood, but eventually they progress towards the DMV testing area. Very frequently I got to drive on the freeway even though that was not part of the test. Sometimes we also picked up other students at various locations and there were good learning opportunities when driving at unfamiliar locations. Beckham is very honest with you and pretty friendly during instruction. Sometimes he prepares snacks for you during the break. However, he can be quite strict if you make mistakes, especially near the test site. It is a good thing when trying to optimize for testing conditions. In addition, Beckham also plans your lessons and schedules the test at a date, time and location that is optimized for you to pass. The level of planning and personalization that goes into scheduling does shows the amount of dedication he has to ensure his students' success during the test. Closer to the date of my driving test, I got Long (Beckham's brother) as my instructor. My lessons with Long were mostly driving around the test area and fine tuning my driving skills for the test. Long is also very friendly and pretty chill. Like Beckham, he will also point out your mistakes so that you can learn from them. Overall, Beckham and Long are a great team of instructors and I would highly recommend if you are looking to pass your driving test. The only caveat I have is that their accent might be a bit strong, but most of the time you would be able to understand them and they are patient enough to explain it to you again if you ask. read more

Beckham and those working with him were super helpful instructors. Everyone that I interacted with at Beckham's school were very nice, friendly, and provided good advice & feedback. They aren't shy about letting you know what you're doing wrong, and good at being honest in a constructive way. Sessions were usually ~2 hours (pick-up was sometimes a little earlier), and included a mix of freeway, residential, and city driving. Sometimes there was a 10-15minute break in between for water/walking. When this happened for me, we stopped at a market and I ended up picking up lunch for the day. While there are a number of things Beckham does well, there are some that are notable. First, when he thinks you are close to being ready for the test, he will tell you that you are and encourage you to book a test (he also will tell you if he doesn't think you're ready). Second, leading up to the road test, lessons heavily focus around the test area routes. He makes sure that his students are familiar with the driving test area which for me not only gave me more confidence in taking the test, but also helped me to get used to some of the quirks around the area (some of the routes had construction going on and had poor road markings, or had turns where it felt like stop signs were somewhat hidden). Third, if you want and he thinks you are ready, he will go with you to the test and let you use his car for the test. He is very familiar with the DMV and the requirements so he arranged things so that there wasn't much on my end to worry about besides just being there for the test. He genuinely cares about teaching his students, it's always clear that he puts them first. Beckham is possibly one of the best instructor/teacher you can find. He really knows every detail it takes for his student to succeed and he makes sure every student he takes pass the test. At first I was slightly intimidated by his way of teaching but after all the lessons I understand that he wants to make sure he knows exactly how much knowledge you have in driving to dictate and adjust the best way to teach you in the most comfortable way. Many instructors only look for your money but Beckham really ensures that he teaches you all the driving techniques as well as making sure you're a good driver for all the years to come. I had the chance to be his student last week and I have to say that he knows what he's doing! He made me work on the things that I lack/bad at. I had a 3-day lesson with Beckham, Aug 24: he took me to Clairemont Mesa and Balboa Ave, check my driving skill and pointed out my weak spots. Aug 25: he took me to the freeway and let me drive to the DMV Normal St., we drove around for an hour and headed back to Clairemont Mesa and practice my driving, brakes & stops. Aug 27: we drove around Clairemont Mesa the entire 2hours and worked on my speed limit, since I was running a bit past the speed limit - he gave me tips and he also took me to the routes where the driving test will take place. We hired Beckham the same day that my son did not pass his first driving (road) test. Beckham answered my texts promptly and quickly answered all my questions. We were able to book an appointment with him that same day. On the day of the appt. he arrived to our house on time and spent some time explaining to us the procedure and how he works. I really liked his calm demeanor as my son was very worried about driving. For the first lesson my son drove with Beckham in his vehicle, however for the following lessons my son drove in our vehicle. We signed him up for a total of 3 lesssons with Beckham. I was actually afraid of driving before I started. As soon as he made me get in the driver's seat, I freaked out but within a few minutes, I got the gist of driving around neighborhood. On that same day, the very first day, he made me go on the freeway. I didn't know what to expect since the cars were moving so fast and so many things were happening at once. While driving, Beckham constantly tells you to look at the mirror and over the shoulder, warns you about what the examiners look for, and helps you turn the wheel so that you understand the angle of the turn and such. Honestly, going into the DMV and taking the test felt less tense knowing that Beckham has good relationships with the examiners which means it's that much easier to pass. Beckham is the best instructor! He is patient and calm. He makes sure not only you pass the test but also you become a careful driver. When practicing with him, he taught me everything you need to ace the road test i.e. looking over shoulder, signals, stop signs and intersections. He spends a lot of time on getting everything right. Also he taught me many tricks to tackle tricky driving situations like left turn at yield on green signal, T intersections, right turn on red, 2-way stops, parallel, straight backing up, and many more. I scheduled three lessons with Beckham after having a not stellar experience with another driving school, where I was stuck in a three lesson package. I was extremely anxious to be on the road in general from the very beginning, and the experience from the first school didn't help. From the first lesson with Beckham, I immediately felt so much better. I went on the freeway for the first time during a lesson (which is the part I was the most afraid of in driving!) but I wasn't even nervous. I was driving 67 mph and I felt totally okay about it. His teaching technique was to comment on every driving mistake I made at the very moment I made it, and to keep repeating those comments when necessary. Gradually those comments stayed with me even when driving alone. As we drove around, he would also comment on what the DMV wanted a driver to do in a given circumstance. When he felt I was ready to take the driving test, he took me to the DMV office and helped me to get an appointment at a day and time he recommended.
