My daughter and I had the best experience with Instructor Bob. He was super flexible and responsive to scheduling the first session. We were in a bit of a rush because my daughter had her driving test scheduled in two weeks. He was so accommodating to our busy schedule and we were able to fit all the sessions in prior to her test. Okay so get this, I unfortunately had a calendar mishap and I put the wrong appointment date, therefore I missed our technically originally scheduled first appointment right - I relayed this confusion to Bob and apologized. He tells me to pay a cancellation fee that was never initially disclosed or mentioned and as of today no where on his website or the initial texts he sent, I relayed this to him that I will not be paying that and he got angry, cancelled all of our appointments and said he doesn't feel my apology because I didn't pay him a fee he never told me about (it would've been a different story if he had asked me for compensation as he had to drive out to me which I would have happily given, instead it seems like he decided to make up a business fee or at least drop one he never mentioned to me and pass it off as an official fee which is extremely bad and dirty business practice in my opinion) I understand frustrations from technically a no show and I immediately knew I would be tipping him *very well* at a rescheduled appointment for his time (Also side note, I literally also told him the fee would make sense if I missed our next rescheduled appointment as it would have been mentioned to me in advance and I'd actually be aware of it's existence). Even moreso oddly, he got angry about me not giving him (a complete stranger...who I've ever met or seen before...and have only texted) my exact home address, I gave him the address of the general complex area as my intention was to meet him outside (am I the unreasonable one for this bc wtf ??) this is an extreme safety concern and I do warn others especially women to be wary as it strikes me as VERY odd to get angry at that. Anywho, moral of the story please input the correct dates into your calendar, make sure you understand the proper way small businesses should behave when confusions happen so as to identify any strange things like undisclosed fees (could protect you from a scam in the future) and do not give your exaaaact home address to a stranger especially if they get angry if you don't, and I stand by that. read more

First, I love how easy it is to communicate with Bob regarding driving lesson schedules. I did several lessons with him and he has a lot of patience and you can feel that he trusts you while you drive. I guess that's the good part for me because I am always nervous to drive especially the first few minutes. Whenever I do some mistakes, he will correct it the best possible way. He will let you schedule and gives you some suggestions. He is also confident about making you drive on freeways and gives you good pointers everytime. Overall it was a very good experience and he did take me to DMV for my test. We did practice beforehand and taught me everything that I need to know. My friend recommended Bob to me so I could learn to drive before taking my exam. I'm currently a college student, and my only previous experience were two lessons when I was 16. I took lessons with Bob for about 2-3 months (I think about 6 sessions?). Scheduling was super easy, usually arranged via text message, and he was very flexible with my crazy college student schedule. The first lesson, he asked me what I knew, and honestly it wasn't much, but he was super kind and taught at my pace. We went over basics first just as a refresher, and I got slowly comfortable with being in the driver's seat. He also familiarized me with the freeway (which I had never done before!), and I think being in San Diego, that's a very important skill. I like that he structures his lessons to be fully focused on you-- my old instructor usually had his students pick up and drop off each other, so this was refreshing. The last two sessions before my exam, we practiced the routes over and over and I felt really comfortable with them. He even taught me to parallel park! I never liked driving because it makes me anxious and I'm generally a tense driver, but through the lessons with Bob I got gradually more comfortable. I actually failed my first driving lesson NOT because of Bob but because I was so anxious I braked too aggressively at a yellow light ("dangerous maneuver"). Bob consoled me and helped me book another appointment in the next week, and I passed! I think having a patient instructor is so important, especially for first time drivers. He also let me use his car both exams at a very reasonable price. Without Bob, I don't know how I would have resolved my driving anxiety. After every lesson, Bob would write me a little summary sheet with what I had learned or done, and where I could improve. He drew out diagrams of intersections and cars with steps to remember. When I contacted Bob late last year, I had driven only a handful of times, most of which were in parking lots. I told him that I had very little experience and was willing to take as many lessons as needed (even upwards of 10) to pass my practical exam. Rather than taking advantage of this, after my first lesson Bob reassured me that two more would be sufficient and had me book my test only a couple of weeks out. In every session, Bob was extremely patient, calm, and encouraging, guiding me through the various test routes and providing detailed explanations of more difficult (for me) maneuvers. As I didn't have a car at the time, he also picked me up/dropped me off wherever I needed and allowed me to rent his car out for test day. I passed my exam with 7 errors--not bad for less than 12 cumulative hours of behind-the-wheel experience. I couldn't recommend Bob more! read more

This review is way overdue as I took a refresher lesson with Bob nearly a year ago. I never drove after I got my license so I wanted to work on it before getting a car. Bob was really accommodating when I mentioned I wanted to practice freeway driving and reverse parking. Although I scared him a few times with my rusty driving, he didn't yell at me at all. He's very easy to talk to so the ride just felt like a drive with a friend! I was actually really nervous before the lesson but I felt so much more confident by the end of it. He reviews techniques and things you need to work on at the end of the lesson so that was helpful in wrapping everything up. I also appreciated how he's open to further questions through text even after the lesson. I had taken lessons with two other driving instructors back home when I first started out, but Bob became my favorite instructor because of his punctuality, patience, and friendliness. I actually drive frequently now that I have a car, and I still use Bob's parking techniques! 10/10 would recommend :) read more

This is a review on behalf of my dad who recently took some lessons with Bob. Despite 60 years of driving experience, my dad was forced to take his behind the wheel test when he renewed his license. He called Bob and was able to get his appointments immediately. My dad was convinced he needed 6 or more lessons and Bob told him he did not feel he would need that many and that he should only take two lessons. He did not try to upsell on more lessons. When it came to the lessons, Bob was always on time. He was very patient and calm and he showed my dad the different things he would need to be prepared for when it came to taking the behind the wheel test. Bob is a phenomenal driving instructor! He replied extremely quickly to all my messages and it was easy to schedule a lesson with him that matched my schedule as a full time college student. I took around 5 lessons and I passed my test at the San Diego DMV. While a two hour lesson may seem like a long time, Bob is a great conversationalist and the time passed by quickly. I have been to two other San Diego driving schools and I think Bob exhibits the most professionalism. Other driving teachers make students drive to one another to save time but Bob makes the effort to drop you off first before going to another student. Bob is open to suggestions for things you want to learn. I feel like lessons I have taken with other instructors just taught me how to pass the behind the wheel test. Parking is definitely not a large focus of other schools but it should be since it is an essential part of driving! With Bob, I learned alot about how to successfully execute various parking techniques. I appreciate the amount of freeway practice I received during the lessons. San Diego is mostly connected by freeway so learning how to drive well on the freeway is essential. I used his car for the test and it was an easy process. Bob is very patient and encouraging. His feedback is constructive and straightforward (he gave me some notes that outlined my weaknesses, and drew some quick diagrams / notes and tips on how I can improve). Bob exudes so much calm and confidence in the student driver that any feeling of anxiety I had about driving (esp. on the highway) was easily manageable. Bob responded quickly to inquiries and always showed up on time. His car is also clean and comfortable. I signed up for two lessons and the test day warmup+rental session (2 hours each - Clairemont DMV). That was all it took to pass with 4 points off (15 and you're donezo)*. *I have some experience from attending a driving school five years ago when I was 18, but have since become very rusty. He speaks Chinese, which is such a nice bonus for fellow Chinese speaking driving students, I think it helped me get into a comfort zone with driving much faster.
