I was at Cornerstone the other day for a friend's wedding and had a little time to kill before the ceremony started. While wandering the property, I bumped into Prohibition Spirits Distillery. I checked my watch and saw that I had 25 minutes before showtime. So... don't mind if I do! I saddled up at the small bar and perused their eclectic selection of spirits. There were gins, brandies, whiskey, run, Limencello (lions and tigers and bears... oh my!). I decided to do a gin flight (3 tastes of 3 different gins for just $10 - they also offer 6 tastes for $20). The gin they were pouring was called Jack's Gin (named after author Jack London). The three gins I chose were: the London Dry; the Melon & Mint; and the new Pink Gin. My favorite was hands down the Melon & Mint. You could really taste the sweetness of the cantaloupe. It almost tasted like a Jolly Rancher candy. If you added a little soda and ice, you'd have the perfect poolside/summer cocktail. The guy working behind the bar was friendly and attentive. And I like that he didn't try to pressure me into buying a full bottle. That being said, if you are a serious cocktail enthusiast or have one in your life, I would keep Prohibition in mind for the holidays. Lots of potent goodies to take home. I am all about Prohibition Spirits Distillery. We heard of it from my aunt and uncle, who had a bottle of their Fig Brandy at Thanksgiving. Fig Brandy? Yes, it's as delightful as it sounds. They also had this Hendrickseque gin (full of cucumber flavor) that was really good. Since we were headed to Sonoma for some wine tasting we decided to pop in and check it out. I like their flights because you can pick what you want to try. I was very impressed by the vodka, which says a lot because I'm not a big vodka fan. Their spirits don't leave you with that "alcohol stank face" because one sip tastes like your whole chest is going to melt. We took home a bottle of this Grand Marnieresque Brandy and it's fabulous. I can drink it neat, on the rocks, or in a Hot Toddy. The gentleman that helped us was great. You could tell he was passionate about the product and knew his stuff. The store is cute with all kinds of fun drinking accessories. And you can order their stuff online, which is perfect because I know this Brandy won't last long. read more

This place has a lot of fun spirits to choose from. We chose not to do to do tastings as we had already tasted at a few wineries and had beer and wine at a restaurant and speakeasy. I probably would have given the place five stars, but I had placed about $150 worth of purchases on the counter and asked the person at the counter if we could have a wee taste of some orangecello and the person at the counter said it wouldn't be fair to the people that paid for full tastings. I work at a winery and I know that a high percentage of people that pay for the tasting fee do not purchase anything else. If someone wants a taste of something we have open, I usually always oblige, whether they have paid for a tasting or not. This establishment probably could have made at least $27 more if the person waiting on us would have poured a .25 ounce pour of the orangecello for us to taste. A week later I'm still shaking my head at the reasoning behind this. Hire people with good customer service skills. read more

Here is a fun place to check out if you enjoy spirits. My first limoncello was in Italy from a tall frozen shooter glass. The limoncello from Prohibition Spirits is much better. More of the lemon taste - as in "fresh". $10 tasting gets you 3 tastings of anything you want. (Stacey C says she got 6 tastings for $10 - maybe my pours were more generous. Plenty to enjoy and share with Sofie who enjoyed the spirits but isn't fond of strong drink.) I had: Figcello - like limoncello only made with figs and proprietary herbs. (They all contains proprietary herbs.) Hint of figs - a desert. Nocino - black walnut liqueur - I purchased a bottle of this because it was unusually good. Like nothing I've ever eaten. It's potent and a likely candidate to mix with vodka or pisco to make a "different" drink. Chauvet Brandy Prickly Pear - This reminded me of pisco. Very subtle taste and quite nice. I love to see local breweries, distilleries, bakeries and wineries come into play in the Northern California to exploit the unique attributes of soil, water, air. California is a relatively young and under developed piece of the world. When I was a kid, wineries were a novelty - everyone drank either red or white wine. Ordering a variety was considered "sophisticated". Prohibition Spirits - California wines distilled into California brandy and California fruit infused into unique beverages. read more

Hibiscus gin? For reals? Oh was it lovely and I don't even like gin. A perfect summer bottle with a nicely made gin tinted with a glowing hibiscus hue! Lovely place with great service. Over the past few years I have really gotten into craft spirits, basically found out that the major conglomerates produce plain boring and tasteless products (For the most part). Prohibition Spirits joins the club of exceptional craft spirits in Sonoma County and I was thrilled to hear they opened a tasting room outside of their small operating distillery (Basically a warehouse). The tasting room is located at the Cornerstone Sonoma complex, which boasts several art studios, wineries, and food options. When I visited Prohibitions tasting room, they were serving up a seasonal pumpkin based spirit, forgive me for not remembering if it was a rum or whiskey, but it was phenomenal! After sampling the seasonal fare, we opted for two tastings to really get a lay of the land as they offer quite a selection and is impossible to taste/consume in one tasting! I started with the Brandy VS and Brandy Grand Orange, both were delightful and really had a great balance between the spirit and flavors blended in. Went with a Bourbon and House Rye next, but the Bourbon really shined out of the two though if I really had to put them head to head against each other. I finished with the specialty Vodka and Moonshine, let me be honest with you, make sure to put some carbs in your stomach as the Moonshine may be a bit much for a lot of individuals out there. With that said though, I was not a huge fan of the Vodka as I tend to like flavored Vodkas, but the Moonshine was excellent! My relative ended up loving her entire flight, which I did not partake in, but she walked away with the Lemoncello (The big seller) and a Figcello. So long story short, if you are into spirits and making your way from the city or you need a break from wine tasting and in the area, make sure to add Prohibition Spirits to your list as it will be time well invested. read more

Great place to sample different takes on brandy, bourbon, limoncello, gin and vodka. Personal taste dominates (sweet go for limoncello, astringent go for the Nocino, strong juniper the #1 gin), but the XO compares with the best. Taste 6 for $10, but a little goes a long way. This place was a great find in Sonoma and warm welcome to something different after seeing so many wineries. Rob was great, answered all our questions and showed us a few things around the distillery. The tasting seemed endless with so many different bourbons, whiskeys, rums and limoncellos. Hey, their product is beautiful and taste quite good. But after we bought some bottles we wanted to do a tasting. They were so disorganized. Sent us to one table. Then said that was reserved. Then we waited outside for 20 minutes. No service. The two people behind the counter were totally unable to handle any volume. Seems like one could not work without the help of the other. The owners need to consider having some real restaurant service type people, - they didn't seem well trained for this type of experience. read more

Came here due to a Yelp promotion of half off a tasting. I checked in, went to checkout, and was told I couldn't get the promo. When I explained it was available on Yelp, I was told that was an old promotion and I couldn't use it. We asked them to update it on Yelp so others wouldn't have the same experience and they claimed they had no idea it was on there. While the premises were very pleasant the poor customer service and lack to accommodate a promotion they had posted is why I'm giving this place one star. read more

Made a quick stop after visiting Meadowcroft tasting room. Wonderful service and information about different flavors of gin, brandy, vodka, and craft liqueurs. Delicious craft spirits in a variety of flavors. The woman who was working the tasting room (didn't catch her name but had longer dark brown hair) was wonderfully informative, accommodating, and pleasant to talk to. Try the pink gin and spritzer. You will not be disappointed, especially if you've indulged in a body weight's worth of wine and are needing a change of venue. read more

A great hidden find. Fred gave us amazing attention. It is a small operation, but the tastings are great. The whole process is done right in the tasting room so it can all be explained and shown there. Most of his spirits are aged in wine barrels at the shop. Fred let us try a lot of his products including two Brandys. I had never tried a brandy and was skeptical, but I wound up leaving with a bottle. In the land of wine and grapes, there is a refuge of the palate. A change in scenery, if you will. Tucked away in a quaint and welcoming shopping center is Prohibition. The open spirits establishment is not your grandma's speakeasy! It is warm, welcoming, bright, low key, and inviting. I highly recommend being open-minded and trying flavors and spirits that you may not think to try. I never thought I would like anything with figs in it, let alone the flavor. Boy was I mistaken!! Their figcello is so good, it was worth the weight in my luggage, and then some. It was so smooth, no bitterness at all and had no bitter bite at all. Of course there are probably going to be some you like more than others, but I challenge you to find one you don't like. This is the same frame of mind of trying any drink really, so don't stop yourself from opening your mind and your lips and swirling down some fantastic flavored fluids you may not of thought would be so refreshing. Some you'll love more than others but all of their alcohol has great twists and taste that will make your taste buds happy you skipped that wine tour. read more
